Lumby U11 Stars Playoff Champions

On Monday March 7th, the Pat Duke Arena was jam packed with an amazing group of fans to watch the Lumby U11 Stars take on Salmon Arm in the North Okanagan Super League Playoff final. Both teams came into the game undefeated in the playoff round robin. The game was tight with both the Salmon Arm goalie and Lumby’s Lucas Barker trading huge saves keeping the game going back and forth; until team Captain Locklyn Quibell broke through and got a natural hat trick to close out the first period. Jax Barg was positionally sound, giving the Salmon Arm goalie a run for his money. Forwards Leland Nelson and Rylan Thompson relentlessly pushed the puck into the Salmon Arm zone. Assistant captain Hayden Bartram and Jasiu Zawadski were persistent with their forward play and shutting down any offensive pressure. The second period brought goals from Quibell and lightning-fast defenseman Assistant Captain Kellen Balcean. Lumby stifled Salmon Arm’s

offense with great defensive play and backchecking from Assistant Captain Callan Church and Cruz Maxwell. Carson Lishman played a smart game covering his defense when the puck was rushed. In the third period Quibell capped off his sixth goal of the night with a beautiful assist by team rocket Atlee Reim. Salmon Arm fought back, with some heavy pressure and scored three unanswered. Ruslan Viret and Sam Ostafichuk pushed back along with AP’s Mason McGlame and Arya Church, shutting Salmon Arm down in their tracks. Goalie extraordinaire Lucas Barker played his best game of the season with huge support from his whole team. The game ended with a 7-3 final with Lumby outshooting Salmon Arm 50 – 24.

Freedom?

I cannot believe these so-called "freedom" protestors. It appears the type of freedom so many of them want is to do anything they please, no matter how it affects others, even here in Lumby. A beautiful new white privacy fence was put up last Fall at the corner of Cedar Ridge Dr. and Shuswap Ave. As I drove by on Tuesday, March 9th, some low-life had spray painted FREEDOM in huge bright green letters. Destruction and disruption seem to be a lot of these protestors' mandates. Do they not have anything better to do with their minds, time or hands? Like a highly intelligent person I know said, "If you don't like the way your province or country is going, run for a position yourself, get in there and work for change." But

I doubt most of these protestors would have the intelligence, stamina or courage for such positions. It's much easier to display anger, criticize and squawk using a nice word here.

All these lovely Canadian flags flying from vehicles once would have been beautiful to see; now it's disgusting - representing anger, hatred. How sad!

I suggest all these people so unhappy with Canada's lack of freedoms move to Russia, where if you protest you are thrown into jail - it's against the law. I'm sure you would enjoy your jail stay there. Or, how about going to Ukraine to help those poor people - do something productive!

In Response To Dale Steeves We are fortunate to have a newspaper in our town of Lumby that prints viewpoints from many walks of life. In response to Dale Steeves: I was glad he supports our rights for peaceful protests including ones against anti mask and the environment I believe our environment is more important than any other subject; more important than people against masks, more important than the whole COVID calamity and more important even than the current invasion of Russia into the UK. That affects people in one country, with ripple effects world wide. The environment affects all of us humans around this good earth. If ever there was a good reason for people to protest continued coal production to name one culprit , the time is Now. All the taxes we citizens pay, especially here in British Columbia, should have a much larger portion going to protecting our earth from further harm and reducing carbon emissions.

There were hundreds of truckers and people associated with them that were protesting. What people fail to understand is that protest was not about masks, although that was a side issue that was brought up. The truckers protest in Ottawa was to protest the Federal Government's mandate to refuse truckers to cross the border. That mandate was so unnecessary and ridiculous because either truckers were vaccinated and could cross the border into the U.S. or they couldn't if they weren't vaccinated. Canada already had it set in place, the same as the Americans, that travelers through the 2 countries couldn't get through without the vaccine. It was a border issue. Trudeau had no business causing a huge uproar over this when it wasn't necessary. What people were protesting was the government creating a mandate. It just made people mad or some, like me, just shook their heads in amazement at one more instance or our tax dol-

lars being wasted. Then there was the emergency act, a huge mistake. It's totally unethical to keep people from accessing their own money. I, along with many Canadians have taken money out of banks. It's my money and to be sure I have access to it, I have to keep it out of the bank's control. Wow, what is the world coming to? That's just is tyranny. I can see this would be a legal way for the police to deal with criminals, but to freeze someone's funds because they support an ideal not popular with the government is like theft; just wrong!

Remember those vaccinations we got as kids where if you got the mumps vaccine, you never got mumps and if you got the measles vaccine, you never got the measles. Not with COVID though. You get vaccinated and you still get the disease. People qualify this saying it's OK because you don't get it as bad. Even people who have had the initial shots and all the boosters get COVID again in many cases. So why bother getting vaccinated with something that has questionable long term affects? I got vaccinated because much of my family lives in the U.S. So now I can go visit them.

But if my family were all in Canada I would never have gotten the COVID vaccination. I couldn't walk into the new hockey arena here in town when it opened up as I didn't have my vaccine card , like the 'CHANCE' card in the Monopoly game to get out of jail free, for Pete's sake! And it IS a chance. One member of my family got the 'jab' and was seriously ill in hospital, another got the jab and died shortly after. There are cases like this all over the world. Can you imagine how many millions, probably billions of dollars the pharmaceutical companies and associates have made?

Last year I predicted that when COVID calamities slowed down and there was less money to be made that we would see War rear it's ugly head in 2022.

Spring At Last... I’m So Excited I Wet My Plants!

Do Plants Sleep?

Yes Spring is here and last night we were told to set our clocks forward an hour and so doing have lost an hour of sleep. Why that should cause such disruption I am unsure but it does and I am not the only one that seems to be adversely affected at time changes. I do however look forward to the daytime hours that will seem longer and I am really hoping that we stay at this time setting as has been promised. I saw an incredible show this last week on sleep. All cells, I learned, need sleep and several animals and birds have made adaptions to ensure that they get this sleep. Seals are able to turn off one half of their brains at a time and get their much needed sleep while Geese can shut their minds down and get some sleep but are still able to swim and they were conducting some experiments on whether they can actually fly as well. That would explain the long migratory flights that some birds take although does not explain how they would not get lost or collide with other birds or objects. I’m sure that they must have explained that fact but it was late and I think I fell asleep. So of course if all cells need sleep and plants are made of cells, they must sleep.

when we should be awake. This Circadian Rhythm actually alters their metabolism. This allows a plant to prepare for winter by the shortening of days, the storage of energy and the reduction of growth. Some plants like Cabbage are able to launch a chemical defense against predators by giving off a pungent chemical at first light in the morning. This is when its more voracious of pests the caterpillar is up and doing the most damage and this chemical make the Cabbage less palatable to them. Some plants fold up their leaves at night to reduce water loss because the process of transportation is halted as tiny pores on the plant do not open and allow for the release of water vapour.

When it comes to a healthy body, building a strong core is key. Our core is complex and far more than just your abdominal muscles. It does include the abdominal muscles but also muscles around your back (obliques & transversus abdominis), in your trunk (multifidus) and in pelvis (levator ani is main one, along with many more). An indication of a weak core maybe lower back pain, balance issues or incontinence (leaky pee).

Working the core muscles properly is key rather than just powering out your abs only, which can cause an imbalance on its own. Also, a nice toned core not only comes from a variety of exercises but also proper nutrition. Ever heard the saying abs are made in the kitchen?

This is true, what you eat is only going to allow that nice toned body to show through. 80% of what you eat is going to be how you look! But more importantly it’s going to allow you to work your core easier. When body fat decreases, inflammation decreases, along with more energy from the foods you eat. Proper nutrition minimizes muscle damage, speeds up workout recovery and allows for proper energy throughout your day and for your workout. EVEN if not working out and just doing daily activities, proper nutrition is going to give you a world of benefits as; even energy throughout the day without dips and crashes, a sense of feeling clean and kind to your body with the foods you are putting in, along with being preventative towards chronic disease.

Eat More to Build Your Core!

What do I mean by this, well when reading above you may have seen excess weight causes inflammation in the body? Right away you may think you need to decrease calories to make this happen. This may be true but also very untrue. By simply cutting calories and not eating what you need to properly nourish yourself, can actually cause more stress on the body, raising cortisol levels and inhibiting weight loss, essentially doing the exact opposite of what you want to happen. The idea is to eat so you are satisfied, and properly nourished. Depending on your age, gender, body type, activity level and goals this can differ. Look at the different key aspects:

The amendment bylaw is to reduce the business license fee from $1,500 to $500. This is a column meant for fun and some information About myself: I am a Freelance Photographer you often see me on the side of the road or in various places taking photos of different things animals, birds, places, people etc. l have lived in Lumby just over 8 years,you have seen my photos in the newspaper (Lumby Valley Times) and once in awhile in the Vernon Morning Star, and the Lumby Art Gallery. Photography is my passion. Disclaimer: The information on some of my photos that I write about a lot of times come from the Internet or books I research them, hopefully the facts are as close to the truth as I can come.

Springing Ahead Again!

Did you wake up this past Sunday Morning and realize that you didn't set your clocks an hour ahead before going to bed the night before for Daylight Savings Time (DST). It's okay it happens, I forgot too. After a while on Sunday morning I turned on my computer, yep there it was, the time changed. So the clocks on the walls had to be changed too.

How do you feel after the time changes whether we "spring ahead"? I know for myself I feel pretty tired for about a week or so. A couple of my friends from

Kelowna came over for dinner last night, she said how groggy she felt all day.

Adjusting our times has been going on for what seems like forever, the Romans would use their water clocks by having different scales for different months of the year adjusting their daily schedules for the solar time using their sundials.

-1784 Benjamin Franklin as a joke suggested seasonal time change, this idea did not include using clocks instead he wrote an article in the Paris Journal stating that Parisians would be able to save their candle usage, if people got out of bed earlier in the morning. (hahaha, what a character) -1895 George Vernon Hudson from New Zealand and a builder from Britain with the name of William Willett made a proposal to Wellington Philosophical Society that there should be a time shift of 2 hours forward in October, with a 2 hour shift back in the month of March. Some people liked this idea, but it was never carried forward (good thing, can you imagine how tired we would be if we sprang forward by 2 hours instead of 1.)

-1905 William Willett went out on his own; his new thought was to change the clocks ahead by 20 minutes on each four Sundays in April, then switch them

back by 20 minutes on the four Sundays in September the total would be 8 switches per year (wow, how confusing, we would never get any sleep.)

-February 1908, British member of Parliament Robert Pearce heard about William Willett's theory and liked how it sounded when he presented the bill to the House of Commons. In 1909 the first DST was drafted, this bill had been presented many times, but a lot of farmers were opposed to this idea, the bill was not made into a law. William Willett passed away in 1915, one year later 1916 in the month of May the United Kingdom began to use the DST (seven years after Ontario was using DST.) -July 1908 at the tiny town of Port Arthur Ontario. April 1914 Regina Saskatchewan.

-April 1916 Winnipeg and Brandon Manitoba.

- 1916 Germany and Austria started to use DST which created worldwide use of DST, turning their clocks ahead by 1 hour, having the thought that they need to use artificial lighting less so that they could save fuel for their war effort, making this very popular globally.

After a couple of weeks of using the DST other countries caught on for a while. The United Kingdom, and France would be doing the same thing. This carried on until the end of World War 1, when the first war ended these European countries went back to standard time, but when the second world war broke out they went back to DST. Like anything else there are pros and cons to DST:

Well, They Did It!

The U18 Female Stars Hockey team won both the OMAHA Valley League and Playoff Banners !!

They went 15-1 in regular season with 111 goals for and 10 against as they played hard as a team all season . This weekend they hosted the OMAHA playoffs and shared their passion for the game with parents , family, friends and community hockey supporters as they went 4-0 allowing only 2 goals all weekend. The Championship game was one full of grit and determination as the Stars found them self down twice 0-1 and then 1-2 which lasted until the third period when the Stars came from behind again to tie it 2-2 and then with less then 5 min remaining the stars that were outplaying their Kelowna opponent used great team work , Perseverance and determination and went ahead 3-2 for the first time of the game. The Kelowna team kept the pressure on and at 44 Seconds remaining had a power play advantage and

pulled their goalie. The Stars showed why they have been so successful this year and all played their hearts out to keep the lead and take the banner ! There was no doubt they deserved it as their little up and coming female hockey stars the ‘Flying Fillies’ cheered in delight as they supported them all weekend not to mention year whenever they could . It was fast paced

and everything you expected in a championship game.

Great job by the players and their coaches on a game and season well done! Thank you to everyone that came out to cheer them on this weekend and all season! The team is off to Richmond next weekend to represent Lumby in the Richmond Ravens Female Hockey Showcase tournament. Good Luck Stars!

Dale Steeves has tied together anti-maskers with Nazi's and KKK. This is not true. Yes, there are going to be some weirdos who want attention. If you study history it has happened time and again that big business supported by government has infiltrated protests, strikes and gatherings with unsavory characters to make the protesters or strikers look bad.

Steeves wrote 'CHOICE' to support those who do not have the human decency to wear a mask. I try not to wear a mask. Masks cause respiratory problems for me and many others. For Steeves to imply that we are indecent is offensive and incorrect. His article presumes that people were using children as human shields. It could very well be that a fervent protester wanted his or her child to participate in a peaceful protest / march for freedom. Yes, someone did get hurt in the truckers protest but it wasn't the protesters, it was an accident when a mounted police accidentally hurt a person by knocking them down with a horse. I do agree with Mr. Steeve's connection between eating bacon and eggs while in regards to wait times for heart or cancer surgery. Most people know meat causes high cholesterol and plaque build up in the veins. Really people, it's not protesters who

Now Cheryl Altwasse wrote a letter thanking Dale for his informative article. I ask though where did that information come from. The news media?

Online, on television, where? One instance is what happened in Kelowna when some nurses and supporters started a protest in front of the Kelowna hospital against masks. The news media said the ambulance entrance was blocked. I was there most of the day and that didn't happen. Newspapers often put out articles supporting their own viewpoint and write what is not true, like Fox news has done many times, what a promoter of hatred. My dad loved Fox news and I couldn't stand it, so biased! But I watched it with him because I loved him. Remember that famous saying, goes something like, 'I may not agree with you but I will fight to protect your right to disagree', something like that... Some of it I believe is misinformation and sometimes being frank is just being rude. I agree with Cheryl on her concerns about those trucks emissions and think it's a waste of fuel, and I also agree with both Dale and Cheryl that political agitators butted into protests to promote their own political bent.

I think Martin Luther King's protest/demonstration for equality, with thousands marching, was maybe the most non violent and respectful protest of all times and his speeches are legendary. Hopefully we will see more protests like those.
