Response to Dale Steeves Article – “About Freedom” Lumby Valley Times, March 4th 2022 I would like to thank Dale Steeves for writing such a frank and informative article regarding ones’ individual freedom, rights and choices.

One would hope in the year 2022 we as individuals would have learned something from our forefathers who fought and died so we could all live peacefully and united in a world with so much to offer.

The activities the protesters attending rallies in Ottawa, Alberta and along many of our borders to the south, did in fact infringe upon the rights of many individuals. One example is the rights of the residents or the business owners who resided in the downtown area of Ottawa. These people had to live with the noise of horns honking at all hours, bullying for wearing masks, fear of walking down their streets and closure of their businesses, just to name a few.

Protesting respectfully and peacefully is certainly an acceptable way of expressing how one feels. I have no problem with people standing up for what they truly believe in and protesting in a peaceful manner. The incidents that took place in Ottawa and the border crossings did not appear to come across in this manner. I believe it could have been done in a non-confrontational and more respectful manner. For example, the trucks who drove to Ottawa might have considered the rights of the people and

the businesses they were infringing upon. Parking and blocking the main road possibly would have had more of an impact if they parked their rigs peacefully on Friday, didn’t leave their trucks idling, didn’t honk their horns at all hours, and left quietly on Sunday evening or Monday morning. Right now we are struggling with how our climate is changing and how we can help to curtail it. Trucks left idling for days wouldn’t be on the list! And, the standoff at the border crossing did not take into consideration the people who had jobs in the states, the livestock in trucks ready for market, or the essential supplies necessary for many businesses to function.

As Dale alluded, it wasn’t just a protest about wearing a mask or getting a vaccination, it appeared to be a protest against the Liberal government and specifically against Justin Trudeau. If that was the case, then I would suggest the people who feel so strongly that their freedom and their rights are being infringed upon, should form a party, select a leader and run in the next election.

My biggest concern is how the modeling of this type of behavior is going to affect the behavior of our young children. We have seen over the years, how young children have become more aggressive and violent when they have to deal with certain situations.

What will it be like 20 years from now?

How Is A Man Like The Weather?... Nothing Can Be Done To Change Either One Of Them!

Year Of The Tiger

Of the 12 signs of the Zodiac this year brought in the Year Of The Tiger. If you had the good fortune of being born in this sign you are thought to be brave, confident, great levels of willpower, adventurous, enthusiastic. These are the good traits of this sign, the bad traits of this sign say you may be unpredictable, aggressive, short tempered and anxious. Chinese New Year comes on different dates and this year it was in late January. As with Zodiacs weather is predicted and one of my favourite is the Farmers Almanac. The Old Farmers Almanac was created by Robert B. Thomas and was a instant success and increased it’s circulation significantly over the years. In the early 1800’s it became known as the Farmers Almanac and its weather forecasting was in the 80 percent range of accuracy, by the mid 1800’s The Farmers Almanac had a circulation of 225,000 copies. German spies caught on the shorelines of North America were carrying copies of the Almanac to help with weather prediction. February was to have mostly fair skies with showers and snowfall in the higher elevations. March was to start out stormy and then change to fair weather on the coast with the storms moving inward by mid month and the changing to fair weather by the end of the month.

Our winter was to be warmer and drier than usual with below normal snow fall. Our coldest months were to be December and early January. Spring weather will be near normal temperatures with more rain and Summer weather will be warmer and rainier with a hot spell from mid July to mid August. Fall is supposed to be rainier with normal temperatures for that time of year. Sounds interesting I don’t see anywhere where a Heat Dome is expected but rainier sounds good for part of our summer.

Most seeds for the garden should be planted if you are doing bedding plants except for cucumber, squash type seeds, sunflowers and other rapid growing plants. Pruning of fruit trees should be done very soon if you have not finished that task

as you want it done before the sap starts to flow. It’s nice to see the snow rapidly melting but watch for ice over the week as our nighttime temperatures will be low and ice will be forming.

Everything is looking good in the greenhouse and I am becoming excited for the upcoming planting season!

COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER INCOME TAX PROGRAM As happens every year, Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) wants to hear from YOU! The T-4 slips are coming in the mail. T-4’s will be issued to all persons who received “CERB”, “CESB”, “CRB”, “CRCB” or “CRSB” benefits in 2021. Seniors are receiving their Old Age Pension and Canada Pension slips; the banks are issuing their T-5’s for interest earned and RRSP/RRIF’s are being dealt with.

The Community Volunteer Income Tax Program is up and running again this year. Beth and Marilyn will be starting the program on Tuesday, March 1st as follows: All locations and times are at the OAP Hall (under the red roof) at 1765 Glencaird Street.

In accordance with the Community Charter, Section 59 (2) and (3), the Village of Lumby is providing notice that Council will be meeting to consider adopting Bylaw 865, 2022, a bylaw to amend Business License Regulation Bylaw No. 795, 2017 to reflect a reduction in the business license fee associated with Retail Sale of Cannabis stores, at the Regular Meeting of Council on March 21st, 2022. The amendment bylaw is to reduce the business license fee from $1,500 to $500. it was called Chalet Slopes and later Monashee Ski Hill. Lumby Ski Club's pro Mike Irmen operated a ski rental shop and ski school for residents new to the sport of skiing. Unfortunately, the ski hill proved to be unviable and closed in 1988.

This is a column meant for fun and some information About myself: I am a Freelance Photographer you often see me on the side of the road or in various places taking photos of different things animals, birds, places, people etc. l have lived in Lumby just over 8 years,you have seen my photos in the newspaper (Lumby Valley Times) and once in awhile in the Vernon Morning Star, and the Lumby Art Gallery. Photography is my passion. Disclaimer: The information on some of my photos that I write about a lot of times come from the Internet or books I research them, hopefully the facts are as close to the truth as I can come.

A Popular Item

Almost everywhere you go now, you will see these, they are out there for just about any product. They are called a QR Code. They are a modern day Barcode.

You remember the barcodes right, they came out in the 70's. They are on products that you buy from the store. Barcodes were scanned by an optical sensor that helped cashiers to make their lives easier using the scanner instead of manually placing the items into the cash registers. But the barcodes are not as complete as

a QR code is. Barcodes are limited to only about 20 or so alphanumeric characters of information.

One of the companies that were making barcodes called Denso Wave Incorporated were asked to make barcodes that would be capable of holding more information. Tada! Here came the QR code, 1994 was the year it came into the market for business. It was made to be square so that it would be identified easier on a scanner as the square makes it more unique.

QR codes can hold up to 7,000 numbers and are able to read Kanji characters (logographic writing system, this is the writing system that is one of the oldest.)

In 1997 the QR code was used by the AIM standard (Automatic Identification Industry.)

In the year 1999 the Japan Industrial Standards approved the QR code as a standard 2D code.

The year 2000 saw the QR code rise to new heights being approved by the ISO as an international standard.

In 2002 the QR code was made available to the public.

2004 saw the beginning of the micro QR code.

2008 brought in the

iQR which could also read rectangular QR codes, along with this came the ability to meet the demands of more privacy.

The year 2012 arrives, and the QR code now wins an award from Media for Industry under the category of Good Design.

In 2014 the FRAMEQR arrived and this enhances the ability to combine illustrations and photos.

I have used the QR code for a few years now, I started using it around 2017 in one of the businesses that I was selling for. I had it on my business cards, I would show people had to use the QR Code. This code would directly take them to the website I was using. It was great.

The Problem is you have to have a cell phone or a scanner that has an optical sensor to use them.

So if you have a cell phone you more than likely have been asked by some company to use the QR code to get to their website, you may have used it or not. If you have a QR phone and you don't have the QR code scanner on your phone you can get it on an app. Google Play has a few of them free, and you can also get them on your iPhone, make sure you read the reviews before you install as you don't want to get a lousy one or pay for it when they are usually free.

Magic Mushrooms And Psilocybin

Donna Easto Traditional Herbalist, Certified Herbal Educator You may have seen the buzz lately about research done using magic mushrooms or psilocybin in micro doses for the treatment of anxiety and depression.

Magic mushrooms (also called shrooms) contain the drug psilocybin (a rapidly acting anxiolytic/antidepressant). Psilocybin is an active ingredient in over 200 species of magic mushrooms. These are not to be confused with medicinal mushrooms such as Reishi, Chaga, Shiitake, Maitake, Cordyceps and Lions Mane.

However, let’s be clear, the production, sale, purchase and possession of magic mushrooms is illegal in Canada. This article is intended only to give some information on magic mushrooms and current Canadian interest with research into psilocybin, the psy-

Like other mushrooms, magic mushrooms are usually consumed in fresh or dried form, steeped into tea, added to cooked foods and in powder form to fruit juices. Never injected intravenously. Psilocybin is also available illegally in powder, tablet or capsule form. As with many so-called “natural” products sold online, caution is advised. The product may have been made in an illegal lab and the content has not been tested.

From my perspective as a herbalist, adulteration is one of the biggest challenges facing our industry today.

Many people unknowingly purchase a product that is either not what it is claimed to be, or contains dangerous substances, such as the lead used as a colorant in some cut-rate Turmeric.3 Scientific interest in psilocybin is increasing as researchers look into its use in the treatment of depression and anxiety. Currently, antidepressive medications such as selective serum reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), like Ketamine are used to treat depression.

Studies show that after a single dose of Ketamine, there is rapid reduction of depressive symptoms but it is often abused and its use requires close monitoring.

Overall, drugs for depression have limited efficacy, can cause unintended side effects, need to be used for long periods and often have poor patient compliance.

Clinical trials have shown that psilocybin has longer lasting results than Ketamine and shows promise for treating MDD. Unfortunately, recent clinical trials in the U.S. involved low numbers of participants.

According to Norman Farb, associate professor of psychology at the University of Toronto Mississauga, “There is a re-emergence of interest and permission to start studying psychedelics,”1 The World Health Organization website states, “Major depressive disorder (MDD) or clinical depression, affects more than 300 million people globally and is the leading cause of

He estimates that about 100 people will be chosen to take part in the study which will last for five weeks.

At this writing, there are no approved therapeutic products containing psilocybin in Canada. However, if you wish to pursue treatment with psilocybin, speak with your health care provider. There is a process for practitioners to request access for patients with serious or life-threatening conditions or for emergency treatment. There is no guarantee that the request will be approved through the Special Access Program (SAP).

The U18 Female Stars Hockey team are the 2021/22 OMAHA District League Banner Champions for the whole Interior completing their league season going 15-1 with an impressive 111 goals for and only 10 against. Their league spans from 100 Mile House to Kamloops and Kelowna. The Females Stars also filled their regular season playing 6 rep exhibition games this season against Single A Rep Kamloops and Nelson squads. The 6 games resulted in an impressive 3 wins, 1 loss and 2 ties. Winning and tying the first place Kamloops Rep Squad and proving they can play with the best and would be able to hold their own at provincials in the Single A League. Sadly the female Star squad had their home tournament and away tournaments in January cancelled

however are off to Richmond later this month to face Yukon, Vancouver and Victoria teams in the Richmond Ravens Female Tournament and make a name for themselves in a huge female hockey showcase tournament. This impressive team can be seen in action at home one last time as they are hosting the OMAHA Playoff Finals Tournament next weekend March 12/13 in the Pat Duke Arena. They play Saturday 9:00-10:45am vs 100 Mile House and 5:30-7:15pm vs Kelowna. Sunday the playoffs with have 8:30-10:15am 1st vs 3rd place and then 4th vs. 2nd 10:30-12:15pm. James Edward ROSS We regret to announce the passing of James Edward Ross, Lumby BC: January 11, 1940 – February 19, 2022.

Born in Erwood, Saskatchewan, son of Bill Ross and Pauline Stricker. Loving husband to Elfrieda Ross (nee Hinz), for over 61 years. They hold a lifetime of special memories with relatives and friends. He will be dearly missed and forever remembered by the many people who loved him.

Jim was a strong and capable logger and heavy equipment operator. He founded J & D Loading, JFD Logging, Ross Construction, Ross and Son’s Manufacturing, and was involved with R & C Contracting.

Over the years, he cleared the way for subdivisions and many roads in Lumby and surrounding area as a skilled Caterpillar operator.

Jim loved music, camping, nice trucks, a good chat at the local café, and a walk around town.

He always enjoyed a good joke and with his warm smile; was well known for giving people “a hard time”.

Jim is Survived by: His wife, Frieda Ross Children: Connie Ross and Darcy Ross (Lisa Parsons).

Grandchildren: Sheralynn Esguerra (Edgar), Tyler Huwer (Merranda), Caylen Ross, Shandis Ross, Sarina Parsons and Chelsey Parsons.

Great Grandchildren: Justin, Janessa, Jayden and Janaya (Sheralynn and Edgar). Kaden

and Arabella (Tyler and Merranda). Roxy-Rae (Sarina).

Ross Brothers and their families: Dennis (Reenie), Reg (Jacque), Bob (Shirley) and Terry (Sandi Brenner).

Jim’s in-laws, the late Albert and Mary Hinz, were very dear to him, and he also held a special place in his heart for Frieda’s sibling and their families.
