In Response to "It is about freedom" To the Editor, I would like to thank Larry Hanna for his letter to Lumby Valley Times, published on February 11, 2022 that has opened up a conversation about the current protests in Ottawa and elsewhere.

Having to be vaccinated is seen as an infringement on individual rights by the trucker movement. However, commentators such as Barbara Perry, director of the Centre on Hate, Bias and Extremism (Oshawa, Ontario), have questioned individual rights being trumped over collective responsibility. Right--wing political movements have taken a stand for their individual rights although their freedom to defy the law leaves others in jeopardy. What do they want the government to do when the health care system is in danger of being overwhelmed by the pandemic?

What freedoms are they fighting for? I could understand them if they were protesting against the lack of affordable housing or homelessness or the lack of clean water for remote communities. But there is a strain of anti-government sentiment in this well-organized

movement that I find troublesome. Unfortunately, the large number of people who seemed to have a legitimate beef about the vaccination mandate have been dragged behind people who have extreme views about the legitimacy of the Canadian political state.

Yes, there is a lot of misinformation and disinformation about who comes down with the virus. A local doctor said that he didn’t see vaccinated people showing up in the hospital to his knowledge. We are all in this together, and our medical researchers and analysts are waging a war against an unknown, and no one has all the answers. No one is saying that our existing vaccines are perfect or that our measures to combat omicron et al are state of the art. Yes, big pharma is corrupt and certain sectors of our working population have taken the brunt.

However, this cross-country protest has evoked a response such as the proposed Emergency Act that that promises to further divide us as Canadians.

MAC Snow Painting The Monashee Arts Council volunteers including, White Valley Community Resource Centre Community Pride students, Rayne and Michela, helped dozens of warmly-dressed children paint the snow with food colouring supplied by the Chamber of Commerce who also set up a warming tent with popcorn and hot chocolate for the spectators.

It was so cold the squirt bottle nozzles froze halting the

kid's activity just as the races were about to begin.

Next year organizers hope to see more family day activities and entries in the race Village Councillor Lorelei Fiset and Chamber manager Stephanie Sexsmith had fun getting behind the Chamber's tourism promotion- shop local cutout sign during a break in the action.

Time to Plan and Time to Sow

Never Argue About Climate Change... It Always Turns Into A Heated Debate!

Well it Is certainly nice to be back home after a lengthy, two month stay in the freezing cold weather of Alberta. All worked out well out there so that is nice but there is no place like home! I have been busy planting as many plants need a long germination time till spring. Flowers like petunia and Lysianthus, a few herbs especially Rosemary take plenty of time so they should be on by now. This week I will be starting Geranium seeds and many of the Tomatoes plants I will be growing this year. I keep a record of my plantings every year so I can determine the best time to plant and there is a wide time line for planting depending so you can determine for yourself what needs to be planted and what space you wish to dedicate for your transplants. The temperature of your soil is crucial and that should be 75 degrees and be sure to insure that seeds that need to be covered and those that don’t are planted as they suggest. Some seeds actually need to be refrigerated or frozen for a period of time to ensure they will germinate.

I watched an excellent documentary on the nature of things in mid January and with the price of food and global warming there were some suggestions I thought would be nice to know. They are something we all can do and none of which is illegal, or will disrupt other peoples lives, stamp on the economy, spread COVID or otherwise be divisive. They are small steps that each of us can do in unity and we are very much in need of that. Planting trees. Did you know Kenya is the least forested country in the world. It must look even worse than the hillside across from my house as I watch them clear cut a huge area. I sure hope that they plan to plant some trees there. In Kenya they have undertaken a huge project of replanting their forests.

Over 1.5 million trees have been planted so far. It is believed that there are 1 billion hectares of area that would not interfere with farming and other uses that could be planted. This will improve our air quality by reducing CO2 and prevent erosion and flooding. Another great way we can help reduce CO2 is by what we drive and how we drive it. Our vehicles. Greek Turkey and Rice Skillet

This one-skillet meal is bursting with Greek-inspired flavors, including sun-dried tomatoes, garlic, olive oil, oregano, and spinach. Depending on the rice used, it can easily be prepared in 30 minutes or less.

Servings: 4 Serving Size: 1 ½ cups (251g) Prep Time: 10 minutes Total Time: 30 minutes Nutrition Facts: 383 calories / 44g carbs / 29g protein / 14g fat

• 1 cup (192g) “Uncle Ben’s” uncooked whole grain brown rice • 2 1/4 cups (561g) chicken broth • 2.5 ounces (70g) fresh baby spinach • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon zest (about 1 medium lemon) • ¼ cup (61g) fresh lemon juice

Instructions: 1. In a large, deep skillet over medium heat, add the olive oil. Once the oil is hot, add the shallot and Ingredients: saute for 2 minutes, or until soft. Add the ground • 1 tablespoon olive oil turkey, garlic, salt, pepper, and dried oregano.

Cook • 1⁄3 cup (24g) “Mezzetta” sun-ripened dried tomafor 20 minutes, or until the rice is tender. toes (chopped) 3. Remove the lid and stir in the baby spinach,

lemon zest, and lemon juice. Cook for 2-3 minutes, or until the spinach is wilted.

Taste and adjust seasonings as needed. Serve immediately.

Notes: 1. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 4 days.

2. Follow package directions for the brand of rice used. Depending on the brand, the rice may need to cook for an additional 10-20 minutes.

3. To make this skillet vegan, replace the ground turkey with canned chickpeas or crumbled tofu and use vegetable broth. Macros will vary.

4. If not dairy-free, option to add a sprinkle of feta cheese before serving (macros not included).

Bessette Creek Temperature Study

Location Bessette Creek, Harris Creek, Duteau Creek, Creighton Creek Key Messages: • Installation of 18 temperature loggers within the Bessette Creek watershed to monitor stream temperatures during hot summer months. Data will be used to conduct a stream • temperature modelling exercise in order to pinpoint areas where riparian shading can provide the most benefits in terms of stream cooling effects • Maintenance of two hydrometric station on Harris creek (one of which funded by a separate project) to assess the effects to different flow release patterns on stream temperature • Drone flights over sections of streams utilizing a thermal infrared camera to map stream temperature ONAFD Team: • Elinor McGrath – project lead • Brenley Yuan – field lead • Okanagan Indian Band – field technicians • Skyeler Folks – Field biologist Background/History: Very low flows and high stream temperatures are common in the Bessette watershed, and presents a stressor to aquatic life, including threatened Coho and endangered Chinook populations. Making A Traditional Tincture For Stress Relief While not as precise as those you purchase, it is easy enough to make an acceptable tincture at home with certified organic ingredients.

Supplies 1 steralized and dry quart size canning jar with tight fitting lid • 30 mL Passionflower, • 30 mL Ashwagandha • 30 mL Motherwort • 10 mL Lavender • Vodka: for fresh plant 200 mL; for dried 400 mL Directions 1. Place the plant material in quart jar. Fresh herbs must first be cleaned by picking out damaged parts and brushing dirt off roots.

Do not wash above ground parts. Roots, stems and barks need to be chopped.

2. Next, pour Vodka over herbs to about ½” above the tops (use extra alcohol as needed).

3. Cap the jar tightly and label it with the tincture name, alcohol content and date. Don’t let the herbs dry out. If they are peeking out

This is a column meant for fun and some information About myself: I am a Freelance Photographer you often see me on the side of the road or in various places taking photos of different things animals, birds, places, people etc. l have lived in Lumby just over 8 years,you have seen my photos in the newspaper (Lumby Valley Times) and once in awhile in the Vernon Morning Star, and the Lumby Art Gallery. Photography is my passion. Disclaimer: The information on some of my photos that I write about a lot of times come from the Internet or books I research them, hopefully the facts are as close to the truth as I can come.

The African Horse If you have ever watched a wildlife show, or been to Africa, or a zoo then you probably have seen these amazing animals. There was a movie out a few years ago called Racing Stripes, if you haven't seen it check it out, it is a great movie for the whole family.The Zebras are a single hoofed animal related to the Horse and Donkey. They live in Africa. There are 3 different species of Zebras, and a few different subspecies.

The Grevy's Zebra which lives mostly in Ethiopia, and Kenya, this Zebra is also an endangered species list.

The Mountain Zebra can be found in South Africa, Namibia, and Angola, this Zebra is on the vulnerable list.

The Plains Zebra which you could find in Eastern and South Africa, this species is also on the vulnerable list.

At one time there was also called the Quagga, a subspecies of the Plains Zebra this species became

Each Zebra species has a different pattern of their stripes, they can be white, brown and or black, like human fingerprints Zebra stripes are unique to each Zebra. The stripes will usually end at their bellies, and on the inner side of their legs that are white. Under the coats of the Zebras, they have black skin.

The species Grevy's Zebra have stripes that are pretty thin. While the Mountain Zebra has a variety of different angled stripes, on their neck and their torso the stripes are vertical, but yet on their haunches the stripes are horizontal. When you see a Plains Zebra you may see brownish stripes that look like a shadow in between their black stripes. The stripes that a Zebra has can protect them from the horrendous horseflies, the stripes are also a natural sunscreen.

The different species of the Zebras also come in dif-

ferent sizes and weights. The stripes also help them to be camouflaged.

The Grevy's is the largest of the species, they can weigh about 770 lbs - 990 lbs, they stand about 5 feet from top to bottom.

The Mountain Zebra is the medium size; they weigh about 529 lbs- 820 lbs, and stand from 3.8 4.9 feet.

Lumby Stars are the U18 Monashee Classic Champions 2022 U18 Lumby Stars team sponsored by Valley Wood opened up their home tournament with a 4-0 win over West Kelowna. Tye Krause had 2 goals, Linden Catt 1+1, Grady Krause 1 goal. Zachary Young 2 assists and Faith Seehaver picked up 1 assist. Tyra Cunningham earned the shutout in net. MVP went to Zach Young, Heart and Hustle to Grady Krause and player of the game jacket to Linden Catt.

Happening now -“Macro – unusual ways of seeing” Join the Monashee Arts Council for our new show: ‘Macro- Unusual ways of seeing’ opening at the Village Gallery. This show has been extended until March 12th Call for Artist -“Through the Looking Glass or the Selfie” The selfie has a noble pedigree. Self-portraiture is a respected aspect of both modern and traditional art. Self-portraits in art history bring to mind such famous artists as: Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Gaugin, Frida Kahlo, and David Hockney. Most artists have tried their hand at a self-portrait sometime in their career. And there are as many different approaches to the subject as there are artists. David Hockney, a modern painter, gave us an honest, objective self-portrait as a 17-year-old. Frida Kahlo’s self-portraits explored her complex psychological states resulting from an early accident and a problematic marriage to Diego Rivera. Rembrandt painted his life story through many portraits: as a successful young man and later as a wiser, braver senior. Picasso, in a stripped-down style, confronted his fear of old age and death. The American photographer Cindy Sherman has used her self-portraits as a means of exploring what it meant to be a contemporary woman in all its restrictions and opportunities.

And now we have the selfie. Technology has given the self-portrait explosive potential for social contact. The art of the self-portrait is as close as your phone.

In the past, artists have used their self-portraits as a kind of business card: “here I am and this is the quality you can expect”. This was important to artists who relied on the patronage of the rich and titled. The modern selfie often shows the things we are interested in, our passions or our fears; what we had for dinner. This approach can illustrate our world view as well as our emotional being.

Like Magne in the Netflix show Ragnarok who envisioned himself as a reincarnation of the Norse god Thor, an artist can envision themself as a better self or someone they are striving to be or could emulate. Are we remembering an Alice in Wonderland who was caught between childhood and adulthood or a cyborg of the late 21st century?

This is the season of introspection: Take some time to look at yourself, try your hand at a self-portrait or a selfie. Let your imagination soar!

Running from a Lion is the best thing as Lions are colored blind and the black and white stripes can confuse them, while the Zebras run in their zig zag. Other predators include humans that will kill the Zebra for their skin.

Zebras can run up to 65 km per hour.

When born the foals can weigh between 55 - 88 lbs. After about six minutes after being born the foal can stand on its own. About 20 minutes later the foal can walk, and around forty minutes later they can run. Foals will nurse from their mothers for about a year, around 3- 6 years the young Zebra will be fully mature. The diet of the Zebra consists of grass,leaves and twigs. Zebras have been known to travel about 1,800 miles to find food.

Zebras can communicate with each other very well. They have a lot of facial expressions, using their eyes, teeth, and ears. They can widen their eyes, and bare their teeth, if they flatten their ears back this would mean trouble.
