Player of the game jacket went to Zachary Young and Jace Catt received the jacket for the second game. Tyra Cunningham earned the two wins in net for the day. It was a complete team effort for both of the games. Their next game is at Salmon Arm vs Hemsworth Saturday, February 12.

How Family Caregivers Can Design a Senior-Friendly Kitchen

How can you make the kitchen safer for your elderly mom, dad, or grandparent? Here are four key areas where smart kitchen design can reduce the risk of injury to elderly adults and make the kitchen more senior-friendly.

Non-Slip Flooring One of the biggest injury risks for elderly adults is slippery flooring. Falls are the number one cause of accidental death among elderly adults, and low-traction flooring increases the risk of slips and trips. Unfortunately, many kitchens contain low-traction flooring, such as marble, granite, laminate, and certain types of vinyl and tile flooring. While easy to clean and visually attractive, these styles of flooring significantly increase the chance of accidents and injuries in the kitchen.

Changing floors to a less slippery option will make the kitchen safer for elderly adults, but not everyone has the funds for a costly re-flooring project. In that case, you may want to look for non-slip decals that can be applied to the floors. Another alternative is for family caregivers to buy rubber-soled slippers, indoor shoes, or non-slip socks for your loved one to wear any time they are in the kitchen.

Visibility & Lighting Poor visibility is another risk factor for falls and accidents in the kitchen. That’s especially true for elderly adults, who suffer from poor eyesight at a higher rate

Kelvins Story Part 2 – Heart and Stroke If you missed last week’s corner, February is Heart and Stroke month and I am continuing on a story of an extraordinary client. Kelvin contracted a heart virus that enlarged his heart. He decided to take his health very seriously when after a few colleagues of his died, of the same condition. He got a hold of me and I started working with him on a healthy diet and exercise. Throughout the first year of working with him, he had some incredible outcomes with his health.

But then something happened!

It was a Friday morning and I went to Kelvin’s house to train him and his wife Sonia, as I usually did each week at 10am. When I got there something seemed off. There was a vehicle missing and the main door to the house was closed. Usually, the door is open with just the screen door shut, and they are happily waiting there to greet me along with their dog. But on this particular day they weren’t. I thought maybe they lost track of time and were busy in the backyard.

I rang the doorbell thinking even if they were in the backyard, the dog would still hear the doorbell and alert them I was there. But still nothing, so I knocked and rang again, still nothing. Then I tried calling them only to get their voicemail to leave a message, which I did. It wasn’t adding up, they had always been so good, in letting me know if they had to reschedule.

By now it was getting close to about 10:20 and I had other clients to train at my facility in town for 11:30

am and I needed to account for travel time. So, I left and got back to my gym just before 11am, when my phone rang. It was Sonia, she was crying and talking fast, telling me she wasn’t sure if Kelvin was going to make it. I was utterly in shock to the terrifying news I was hearing. She said she would let me know and hung up. I was left standing there is disbelieve trying to get my thoughts together on what was happening.

I had to try hold myself together and continue my day not knowing the news to come. Later that afternoon Sonia called back, once again crying and my heart sank. Then she says “thank you for kicking his ass all this time.” I didn’t say anything just listened in confusion as Sonia continued. She told me that she found Kelvin that morning in their house unresponsive and that she preformed CPR on him for 20 minutes before the ambulance arrived and took over. By time they got him to the hospital, the doctors braced her to the fact that he had been out for too long, and that if he did make it, he would likely be brain dead. But he did make it and came too like nothing happened at all. They said he was lucky and that all the lifestyle changes he did to prior to that point, was probably what saved his life.

Kelvin did have to get a pacemaker put in and have some additional medications. But the fact that he is still here to tell his story, is a true testament on how changes towards a healthy lifestyle can literally save your life.

We Canadians are known for our passivity, understatement and apology, even when there is nothing to be sorry for. Canadians are also known for their courage, empathy, and resourcefulness under pressure - do not underestimate us! A nation divided against itself is in trouble. We must realize Canadians really are on the same team, and just think for a minute; work together for our common good. In this we must not copy our less-than-stellar leaders in our government who hide behind excuses, and just sling dirt at one another.

Finally, for those people who are clinging to and proposing the idea that everyone being vaccinated will solve our problem with COVID, take a good look at Real! For whatever (noble) reason, the nation of Israel decided to become the ‘acid-test’ for this idea, with Pfizer, and boasts a very high majority of citizens being at least double-vaccinated, and many with other booster shots already. Guess what? Their hospitals and clinics are crammed with seriously-ill and dying patients (double-vaccinated plus), and they are becoming desperate. Reports across our own country verify plenty of people are in similar condition - it is not just the unvaccinated as we were told before! Is the ‘jab’ for COVID-19, that is being promoted sop strongly, a true vaccine? Does this scenario paint the ‘desired’ pretty picture of a perfect solution for any of us? Hardly.

As Canadians we can do better for ourselves, and bring out our courage and resourcefulness. We ought to do better for our children, and seek a real solution for the future.
