Booster Campaign Is Our Path Forward Dr. Sue Pollock, interim chief medical health officer, Interior Health Since launching earlier this fall, B.C.’s COVID-19 booster dose campaign has seen nearly 800,000 shots delivered into the arms of people across the province.

We have moved more quickly and accelerated our efforts in Interior Health to make booster shots available: in particular, for those over 65 and whose health conditions or other factors put them at greater risk of illness.

This is good news, because as COVID-19 case numbers are rising quickly again in some areas, it is even more important that we do not lose our collective focus on vaccination.

As we learn about the new COVID-19 variant of concern, Omicron we are seeing it spread more easily than other variants. We expect it will be the dominant strain in B.C. in the coming weeks and months, just as Delta became prevalent this summer.

The COVID-19 vaccines approved for use in Canada continue to be effective, even in the face of more transmissible variants. The National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) has confirmed that being fully- vaccinated with two doses, followed by a booster shot six to eight months later, provides you with stronger, longer-lasting protection and immunity against variants now and in the future.

Another strength of the COVID-19 vaccines is protection against serious illness. The British Columbia Centre for Disease Control reports that unvaccinat-

ed people are 30 times more likely to require hospital care for COVID-19 than those who are vaccinated, and 50 times more likely to be admitted to critical care.

Throughout 2021, we saw incredible collaboration and creativity across Interior Health as volunteers, municipalities, local service organizations and so many others partnered with our health-care teams to set up and run vaccine clinics. As a result of these ongoing and monumental efforts, over 83 per cent of eligible residents age 12 and over in the Interior are fully immunized.

This achievement is incredible – and we can’t stop now.

In B.C., people receive an invitation by text or email from the province’s GetVaccinated system when they are eligible for their booster shot. As we move into January and February, everyone 18+ will be notified, approximately six to eight months after they received their second dose.

Appointments are required in most Interior region clinics for boosters, although anyone still needing their first or second dose of vaccine can drop-in. To make it as convenient as possible, in addition to the vaccine clinics run by Interior Health, booster doses

can be booked at pharmacies in several Interior region communities through the GetVaccinated system.

I know many of us had been looking forward to waving goodbye to the pandemic as we welcomed in 2022.

Unfortunately, it’s now clear that won’t be the case and that COVID-19 is still very present in our lives.

However, we can continue to be confident in our path forward. Vaccines remain our best defence to protect ourselves and our loved ones, so make your New Year’s resolution now: be kind, be calm, be safe … and get your booster shot.

New Years Resolutions

The New year resolution time is upon us, and this is the time most people think of their health goals.

Usually this consists of losing weight, as the number 1 goal. Often this is attempted through fad diets, extreme fasts, or excessive exercise that usually causes pain, injury, and discomfort. All these things usually don’t last long and if they do, old habits return and the weight piles back on. There needs to be a different mindset, as the outlook must be long term and realistic. Start small, change one habit, exercise and food wise, and stick to it, as it takes 21 days for a habit to stick. Then add on gradually with new habits to change. This may be as simple as moving around more, not necessarily regimented exercise but movement, whether that is getting up every 30 minutes to stretch, do some chair squats, march on the spot, whatever you choose. Food wise this may mean eating

There are so many underlying conditions that are ignored in which exercise and nutrition can alleviate, but we don’t see them physically and may not even know they are creeping up on us. These conditions/ diseases are high blood pressure, metabolic syndrome, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes… Weight loss is not just about physical appearance it’s about prevention or making these conditions not so severe or even eliminating them. Once the focus is changed on health rather than “weight loss,” the mindset becomes different. The focus is no longer on weight loss at whatever cost, but now about getting healthy. Weight usually naturally follows along, as you are able to focus on feeding your body properly and giving it the movement it requires. For some people exercise as we think of it, may be too difficult as it could be uncomfortable and hurt due to inflammation, sore joints, fatigue, or a host of other conditions. The focus should then be

own living at the age of 12. In 1949, Wally, along with brother Ed, formed Chaput Brothers - later to become Chaput Logging Ltd. in 1957. Due to Ed's declining health, the company ceased operations in 1997. Chaput Sand and Gravel was formed in 1963 and was later sold in 2014. Wally also discovered a sil-

ver vein in Saddle Mountain in 1965 and drilled several thousand feet of tunnel. His legacy lives on through the Mighty White Dolomite company in Rock Creek which Wally established in1982. Wally married Maria (Rita) Vanburren in Rotterdam in 1945 and together they had 3 children: Ingrid, Paul and Terry.

November 15, 1948 - November 16, 2021 Beloved Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Sister, and Aunt, a long time resident of North Fork Road, Cherryville, B.C. Penny Stuyt died unexpectedly from a severe illness at her home in Cherryville, B.C. Predeceased by her Father (Stanley Baker), Mother (Nancy/Xanthe) of South Slocan, B.C. Penny is survived by her husband Pieter Stuyt, her brothers Peter Baker of North Vancouver and David (Brenda) Baker of Millarville, Alberta as well as her daughters Margaret (Cary) Benson of Enderby, B.C., Marci-Lynn (Shawn) Gilarowski of Ottawa, Ontario, step-daughter Angel Gotzy (Lance) of Nelson, B.C. and stepsons Mark (Sharka) Stuyt of North Vancouver, Shawn Stuyt of Terrace, B.C., Scott Stuyt of Surrey, B.C. and Guy Stuyt of Kaslo, B.C. She is also survived by her grandchildren Allashua Gilarowski, Aiden Benson, Lucas, Kylan, and Amber Stuyt, and Ella and Alex Gotzy.

Penny arrived in Cherryville in the late 1970’s accompanied by her husband Pieter looking for their bit of paradise. Penny soon found work helping the many small businesses in the area with their bookkeeping and accounting needs as Monashee Accounting Services. After a short sojourn in the Richlands area, Penny and Pieter soon moved to their property on North Fork road above Cherry Creek. Pieter found work as a carpenter and between jobs began slowly converting the old log cabin into a modern dream home with ample space for their daughter Margaret, Penny’s office, and their many friends and family who came to stay.

Penny was always active with the community and often volunteered her services. She made life long friends amongst her clients and the rest of the community. Penny was always up for a conversation, a coffee, or a lunch with friends.

Penny never tired of the peace and beauty that she Piete found along Cherry Creek. She will be missed by her husband, her family, and many, many others.

Procter 1937-2021

On December 25, 2021, Ann Elizabeth Procter passed away peacefully in Beaverlodge, Alberta at the age of 84.

Ann was the eldest daughter of the late Earle and Betty Robinson of Lumby, BC and a long-time resident of Mabel Lake.

Ann is survived by her brother Joe Robinson, sisters Merle (René) Vachon and Frances McKeown, children: Bill Brett (Cheryl), Doreen Smith (Devon), Betty Genovese-Dyck (John) and Shaun Helm.

December 10, 1953 - December 28, 2021

Ann will be lovingly remembered by her many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Donna Kowalski at the age of 68.

Donna will be deeply missed by her partner Charlie Fisher, sister, Mary-Ann Kowalski, brother Brian Kowalski, nieces and nephews BJ (Evan), Robert (Crystal), Amanda (Travis), Jessica (Chris), Justin (Dustin), Bree (Chris) and Felicia Kowalski. Donna was welcomed on the other side by her son Damien, first husband Robert Marks, her parents Rudy and Grace Kowalski and her brother Randy.

The family would like to thank Linda Neighbour and Starleigh Genovese for their years of devoted care.

As per Donna’s wishes, there will be no funeral service held.

Ann was predeceased by husbands: Gerry Brett and Donnie Procter, long-time companion Thomas Helm, sister Lorna Bryce, brother-in-law Ken Bryce and sister-in-law Louise Robinson.

Happy New Year from Lumby, UK!

Did you know that there is a small village in the UK that shares our name? I didn't until I received an email from Gemma Howley who lives there.

She wanted to send a Happy New Years greeting from one Lumby to another.

Here is a little about her "Lumby".

Tucked on the edge of North Yorkshire, Lumby is a tiny hamlet of just 50 houses and 125 people. It is situated 32 km south west of the historic city of York and its only facility today is a postbox on the village green!

A popular through route for walkers, runners and cyclists, Lumby is a Viking name for "small wood" but we know that Romans were here before as metal detectors are often finding coins and other artifacts.

Historically Lumby has always been a farming village with several "thatched cotts" but today most of the old cottages have been demolished and there is only one working farm left in the village now.

Situated on the west side of the hamlet is Lumby Hall, the largest property in the village. Originally a farmhouse it was built on the site of a monastic grange but is, today, a private house.

The village green is maintained by locals and is now the site for remembrance and festival gatherings.

We discovered two young men from Lumby who gave their lives in World War 1 and we were able to honour them in 2021 and the first Nativity and carol service was held in December, which brought all the villagers together.

The next celebration will be Easter and plans are in

place to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee later this year.

The people of Lumby North Yorkshire would like to wish the people of Lumby in the Monashees a very happy and peaceful New Year and we look forward to sharing more experiences of our wonderful communities!

They Brought Home The Bronze!!!

After being delayed a week due to road / travel challenges for all teams and some venue challenges the Senior Girls Single A Provincials were held this past Thursday-Saturday in Nelson and Castlegar. The Charles Bloom Senior girls went 1-5 in round robin play over Thursday and Friday which put them in 6th place heading into playoffs Saturday am which meant that they faced 3rd Place Cedar Christian from Prince George in an early 8:30am game which would decide their fate if they would move on for a top 4 finish or not. The Bloom squad rose to the challenge and upset and shocked Cedars Christian team which meant Bloom moved onto the Semi Finals against Host #2 Mount Sentinel in a best of 5 match. The Sentinels took the first set but Bloom came back and won the second to make it 1-1. The third set Bloom came from behind and went ahead and then in a back and forth tight match lost 25-23. The forth set went to Mount Sentinel which meant Bloom was in the Bronze medal match against Kings Christian of Salmon Arm who lost to Osoyoos Rattlers in the other semi final. Due to great games for every match the day ended up behind schedule and over two and a half hours late the girls started the Bronze medal match. Kings Christian was also prepared to battle as they have been a small team with tons of talent as well.

Kings took the first match but Bloom was not prepared to let them take the second and third place ti-

tle and came back and won the second set which set them up to take the third game and win the Bronze medal! It was a great weekend and the girls would like to thank The Lumby Valley Times, Sheardown’s, and

the community that sent well wishes all tournament and watched the games livestream sending cheers and positive energy to the Kootney’s it was so appreciated and the love and support felt.
