"Merry Christmas" from Cooper!

While Santa is busy with his Elves (who are definitely working overtime this year), Cooper is equally as busy promoting his new 2022 calendar raising funds for your local Foodbank as well as the SPCA in Vernon, ensuring all his furry friends have an equally special Christmas.

Cooper was 9 years old this year and he told me he has no intention of slowing down! He loves meeting people and just has to say hi to anyone who crosses his path and also those on either side in reach of his lick! As well as being extremely social with everybody (no matter how many legs you have or how old you are) Cooper does have some favourite hobbies. Obviously, like many of his friends, he loves to stick his head out of the car window at 60 km/hr and take in the aromas in the breeze, but detests it when you blow in his face! He loves to lay in the creek in the summer, but then runs away and hides if you have a bucket of water and just want to wash his paws! His favourite toy is a laser pointer that displays the temperature of whatever it is pointed at (he's a techno geek).

His favourite game at the park is following other dogs chasing balls and frisbees, ensuring they bring them back to their owner! He does have a girlfriend, but due to privacy laws, he doesn't want disclose anymore information!

Well, Cooper is off for another walk, but hopes everyone has a Happy Holiday and don't forget, if you just can't think what to buy someone for Christmas or need that last minute stocking stuffer, Cooper still has some calendars left.

Photos and Memories From The Lumby Museum

Avro Anson Mark 5 The recent atmospheric river events in our province remind the Lumby Museum of the 1948 Fraser Valley floods and the part 3 Lumby men played in helping some of the 16,000 people evacuated from their homes. In 1947, Peter Dyck, Ron Catt, Jimmy Inglis and Dick Laidman founded the L&M Service

Ron Catt which flew passengers from Vernon to Vancouver for $40.00 return. To start the venture, Jimmy Inglis had the money, Dick Laidman had the vision, Peter Dyck was the pilot and Ron Catt was the crewman.

An Avro Anson Mark 5 military plane was purchased and retrofitted to carry passengers. When the Fraser

Valley flooded in 1948, L&M Service made 7 trips a day moving people and supplies to and from the devastated area. They could only fly during daylight as there were no lights at the airport in those days.

L&M folded in 1952 as cars and buses became the more popular forms of transportation.

How to Help Seniors During the Holidays

There is a lot of pressure on people to enjoy themselves during the holidays. The season is supposed to be merry and bright, but many elders feel increasingly isolated and unhappy this time of year—even before the coronavirus pandemic complicated everyday life and special occasions. Understandably, families are still concerned about how minimizing COVID-19 risk will affect their holiday plans with aging loved ones this year.

While aging can bring wisdom and experience, there are inevitable losses that even the healthiest seniors face. Loved ones and friends fall ill and pass away.

Energy and mobility levels often decrease, resulting in feelings of lost independence and opportunities.

Neighborhoods change over time, leaving even those well enough to remain in their own homes feeling lonely and disconnected from their communities.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), socially isolated older adults are at higher risk for depression. The focus on family, friends and togetherness during this time of year can

actually bring melancholy feelings to the forefront for many elders. It’s more important than ever to be supportive of and attentive to our loved ones, but in ways that keep everyone as safe and healthy as possible.

If you believe that an aging parent, friend or neighbor may be feeling lonely or depressed, there are steps you can take to help lift their spirits. You are probably busy with adapting your own holiday plans and traditions, but we must remind ourselves what the holiday season is truly about. Sim- really matters: the important people in your life. Use plifying some things will allow you to focus on what these ideas to brighten up a loved one’s winter season.

Christmas Pounds Scammers “Spoofing” Local RCMP Phone Numbers The Vernon North Okanagan RCMP are warning the public of an ongoing police impersonation scam after two North Okanagan residents were conned out of thousands of dollars.

Police recently received two separate reports in which the victims were tricked into purchasing and turning over thousands of dollars worth of gift cards to a person claiming to be a police officer. One victim lost $3500, and the second lost $2000. In both cases, the phone number was being spoofed, or altered to display a trusted phone number; in these cases, the Enderby and Armstrong RCMP office’s non-emergency lines.

The fraudster even went as far as providing a fake name, rank, and even badge number.

Police officers will never request monetary payments, ask for gift cards, or attempt to solicit any financial information over the telephone, or email, states Constable Chris Terleski, Media Relations Officer for the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP. If someone contacts you, identifies as a police officer, and asks for any of these things or threatens you in any way, end the call immediately. If the person keeps pressuring you or threatens you, it’s not legitimate and you are doing the right thing by hanging up."

Recognize, Reject, and Report Fraud • Never assume the caller is who they say they are simply because they have some basic info such as your address or your birthdate.

• If you didn’t initiate the call, you don’t know who you are talking to.

• Never give out any personal information over the phone to unsolicited callers • Never pay a debt by crypto-currencies such as bitcoin, prepaid credit cards or gift cards from retailers such as iTunes, Amazon, or others.

If you have not provided personal information or lost any money, you do not need to contact your local police. North Okanagan residents are encouraged to report this, or any other frauds to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre or by calling 1-888-495-8501.

As pointed out in last week’s corner the Christmas season can really get out of control with overindulgence on food and drink. But thankfully, there are so many tricks we can do to save us from the dreaded pounds, that can so easily be put on.

Follow these tips below, to help you avoid the dreaded holiday weight.

Ordering or choosing your food: 1. Eat before your event so you won’t be tempted to overdo it especially if faced with not a lot of healthy choices.

2. Skip the appetizers or have as your main meal but choose wisely as many of these are high in saturated fat. Ahi tuna is a nice light choice.

3. When ordering your meal, skip the sides other than salads or sautéed veggies; choose fish, tofu or lean meat, or a stir-fry in general.

4. Share a dessert or if at an event or someone’s house with open desserts cut up little pieces of treats (chocolates, cookies, squares...), that way you can try a little of everything instead of gorging yourself with a whole piece of each thing.

5. Use a small plate if you have a choice and fill it, the brain gets tricked into thinking it‘s still a lot of food and you are left feeling satisfied and not overstuffed. By doing this one simple trick you can save up to 400 calories or more.

Drinking/Beverage Tips: (Remember drinks alone hold a lot of calories) 1. Stick with clear alcohols and diet pops 2. 67 calorie beers instead 3. Drink a big glass of water between each drink not only will make you drink less but will keep you hydrated so less chance of a dreaded headache the morning after 4. Your Rights When A Business Delivers An Online Order To The Wrong Address

Have you ever ordered something online and discovered that the item was delivered to the wrong address? Not sure who to contact or who is responsible?

Here’s what the law says in BC.

Online orders in BC When you buy something online, you are usually entering into something called a distance sales contract. This “contract” may look like an order confirmation or digital receipt.

Healthful DIYs For Christmas Giving

By Donna Easto Like most herbalists, I'm a great fan of using elderflower teas for moving heat out of the body. These teas cannot lower a fever, but will bring relief when you’re hot and stuffy. Versatile elderflowers also soften and rejuvenate the skin when made into a facial product. A bag of elderflower tea or bottle of elderflower facial oil make a welcome and useful gift for someone special.

Elderflower Tea #1

Ingredients: ½ cup dried elderflowers; ¼ cup dried yarrow leaves and flowers; 2 tablespoons dried rose hips and 2 tablespoons dried peppermint.

Directions: Blend all the herbs together.

Elderflower Tea #2

Ingredients: ½ ounce each of dried blackberry leaves, dried elderflowers, dried linden flowers and dried peppermint leaves. Blend all the herbs together.

Directions: Pour one cup water brought just to a boil over 2 tablespoons of herbs. Steep covered for 10 minutes and strain well. Add honey if desired.

Elderflower Face Oil

Ingredients: ½ cup jojoba or grapeseed oil; ¼ cup dried elderflowers, 6 grams of green tea, 1 teaspoon rosemary extract, 10-15 drops of lavender essential oil.

Directions: Infuse your oil in a slow cooker or other low-temperature appliance that can maintain the oil at 37 C. Infuse for 24 hours. Use a few layers of cheesecloth to strain off the herbs from the oil, add the rosemary extract and lavender essential oil, stir well, and put into a pretty bottle with a pump.

HINT: Next week’s recipe is for Elderflower Sparkler, you’ll need 2 cups of dried elderflowers to make 5 pints (about 80 ounces). It’s a delicious drink that we use instead of champagne to ring in the new year.

After learning that thousands of bees survived under the ash of the LaPalma volcano by eating their own honey, I vowed to use even more of this superfood. With this quick and easy recipe you can whip up beautiful homemade chocolates for Christmas giving:

Melt coconut oil in a small pot over low heat. Once melted remove from heat and add cocoa powder, honey, vanilla and sea salt. Whisk everything together until there are no lumps of cocoa powder and the honey has dissolved into the chocolate mixture.

Pour into your favourite silicone molds and place in the freezer for at least 30 minutes (or fridge for at least an hour.) Once hardened, pop them out of the mold and place in a pretty box for gift giving. These chocolates have to be stored in the refrigerator to keep the coconut oil in a solid form.

Chai is a great source of antioxidants, which work to reduce free radicals in the body promoting cellular health. This recipe, accompanied by a package of the tea and spices needed makes a perfect gift for anyone who loves the spicy taste of a chai tea.

Chai Spice Mix

Ingredients: Combine ¼ tsp loose leaf black tea; 1 tbsp each ground ginger, ground black pepper, ground cinnamon, ground cardamom, 1 tsp ground nutmeg.

Directions: In a small saucepan bring ¾ cup water to boil; add tea leaves (or one tea bag) and simmer 1-2 minutes; add ¼ cup milk to tea and simmer 15 seconds; add 3 pinches of spice mix to tea and continue simmering 15 seconds; using a strainer, strain tea into a mug and add sugar to taste.

May 8, 1936 - November 24, 2021 Ron Otteson passed away peacefully in his home on November 24, 2021, as he had wished. Ronald Norman Otteson was born in Rocky Mountain House on May 8, 1936. Ron and Eleanora were about to celebrate their 59th Wedding Anniversary. Ron is survived by his wife Eleanora Otteson and children: Sharon(Morgan), Whileen(Stan) and Jay, grandchildren, Logan(Leah), Ryan(Sandra), Durell(Danielle), Meghan(Matthew), Dylan and Alyssa, along with great grandchildren: Tiana, Ariel, Aurora, Clara, Luken, Aria, and Leo. Ron is also survived by his brother Bernard and sister Darlene and numerous nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his daughter Roxie and his brother Joe. Ron was known for his ingenuity with the first automated sawmill. His dump truck was well known for miles around. Ron donated land to Cherryville Gospel Church and supported many other projects in the community.

As it is not the time for gatherings, we ask that you celebrate Ron with a smile when you hear that old Ford dump truck in the distance.

As the world continues to reside in the uncertainty brought about by the events of the last 2 years, but that hasn’t stopped the Monashee Arts Council from bringing together over 25 local artists and crafters of our community with the Christmas Store at the Village Gallery.

The Christmas store is located at the Village Gallery at 1975 Vernon Street (hwy 6) and will run November 15th to December 24th , Monday to Saturday from 10am to 4pm.

We ask that you do not shop if you are feeling unwell, and please wear a mask while in the gallery and use the hand sanitizer that has been provided.
