What it took At a time when our Brothers, were dying for others, Who today don’t even care anymore It’s time we remember this War Fighting for our Rights and our Freedoms So dying for nothing will not occur anymore It’s time to remember this War. This Remembrance day should be even more important, as we see our Rights and Freedoms being desecrated, by Trudeau and his Liberal Government.

DIY Room Spray

by Donna Easto Traditional Herbalist, Certified Herbal Educator It’s getting close to Christmas (yikes!) and if you’re like me you’re well on your way to getting your home-made gifts wrapped and ready to mail or put under the tree.

Air fresheners are usually a hit with my family. They’re easy to make with certified organic essential oils and vanilla extract. Yup, Vanilla instead of vodka or brandy.

Not only is vanilla affordable, it adds a beautiful mellow scent to your creations. I use regular baking vanilla made with vanilla extract and natural flavours for these.

You can use Pure Vanilla Extract if you wish to avoid the sugar, glycerine, flavours and colourants (caramel) in your air freshener spray. Pure Vanilla should only contain two ingredients other than water, extractives from high quality vanillas such as Madagascar and alcohol (necessary to extract the active components from the vanilla bean seeds.) Over the next few weeks, I’ll share some of my favourite DIY herbal gift ideas. Here’s the basic air freshener recipe and some suggestions for EO combinations.

• 2 tablespoons Vanilla Extract • 3/4 cup water • 8 ounce mister bottle.

• Combine extract and water, shake well before misting.

Fill your home with the rich sweet smell of vanilla.

CHANGE IT UP by adding your favourite pure essential oils (EO) to your room spray. A few suggestions are: Citrus Mint • 10 drops orange EO • 8 drops peppermint EO

The Poppy

I was so disappointed to hear of the disturbances at many of the Remembrance Day ceremonies. It was disrespectful, selfish and totally out of line on the day and at the events where we honour our fallen men and women. Yes they gave their lives for our freedoms but I am sure they would have been appalled at the hostility and selfishness that was displayed, threats that were made and the all around lack of respect to all. I am hopeful that charges will be levelled against several of these people and they deserve it.

The Poppy is a herbaceous, colourful and ancient plant that grows in many areas of the world. It can be a perennial or annual, easy to grow to the point of invasive to a delicate but tenacious perennial. They tend to grow best in spring to early summer and can be an incredible, bold flash of colour in our yards. They are not only a showy flash of colour but the many varieties have uses from medicine (somniferous or opiate poppies), culinary endeavours such as on cakes and breads as well as paints, and varnishes. The seeds are rich in oils used in margarines and the pollen very important to our bees. Most Poppies secrete a latex when injured. It was even symbolically mentioned in a children’s classic The Wizard of Oz. “And now my beauties something with poison in it I think, but attractive to the eye and soothing to the smell. Poppies, Poppies, Poppies will put them to sleep” ( Wicked Witch of the West. Wizard Of Oz Movie 1939) Poppies can be dangerous to animals causing sedation to excited states, loss of appetite, pin point pupils in dogs to dilated pupils in cats both with whining and lost staring into space episodes. Seeds from all types of annuals and root divisions from perennials are available including the opium poppy. They can grow up to 2 or 3 feet tall and most will die after blooming although with perennials pruning will encourage late blooms in fall and seeds from annuals will often regenerate again the following spring.

The Poppy tends to grow in disturbed ground. In the 12 century, in the times of Genghis Khan, white poppies grew and were symbolic of death and rebirth.

In Flanders with the disturbed ground that was a barren land of chalk soil, lime from the rubble provided the perfect medium for the Red Poppy that thanks to the poetic Lieutenant - Colonel John McCrea, of Guelph, Ontario, who served as a medical officer in WW1 the Poppy became the symbol of fallen warriors, of sleep, peace and death. Thanks to millions of Canadians who proudly wear the Poppy every November keep the memories of the fallen alive and strong, your support and proud display of a Poppy on your lapel and being kind and staying safe will again show the world of Canadian’s Heroism.

Poppies should be worn on the left side over the heart and should not be obstructed from view. They are normally worn from the last Friday of October to November 11th and at all Veterans funerals and memorials. They should always be disposed of respectfully or be saved.

Thousands of Canadians place them on the Tomb of The Unknown Soldier after the Remembrance Day Ceremony. Always worn with pride and humility.

The weather has been cooperative and although snow has fallen it may be a while yet before we really get a lasting snow and a real taste of cold.

Lumby has a Nurse Practitioner! Graeme Rosenfeld, BSN, MNP who will start his practice in the Lumby Health Center for unattached patients in November 18, 2021. Nurse Practitioners are primary care providers that deliver a full range of healthcare services across the lifespan.

Graeme Rosenfeld, Family Nurse Practitioner obtained his Master’s degree through the University of Victoria in July 2021.

He has been working as a Registered Nurse since 2015 with much of his time spent in the emergency room. Graeme says those critical care skills have enhanced his clinical assessment and judgment as a Nurse Practitioner. His focus is on health promotion, disease prevention/management, and developing a partnership with his patients. Graeme says he looks forward to bringing his passion and care to the Lumby community.

Menopausal Years, Symptoms, Tips and Management - Part 5 You may have now picked up on, that in the menopausal year’s there are a variety of symptoms and risks that can come about. Hormones become imbalanced, various symptoms start to arise, insulin is less effective, and lean body mass decreases - which usually equates to fat increasing, along with higher risk of developing osteoporosis and heart disease. Below are the things we can do to minimize many symptoms and weight gain.

1. Eat foods that don’t turn into sugar fast (protein, fats, fibrous carbohydrates), as again insulin is less effective. Focus on more protein to maintain lean body mass, healthy fats to help with hormones and complex carbohydrates high in fiber along with ample fibrous vegetables.

Also, because metabolism slows down, focusing on portion sizes, as about 200 less calories are burned in these menopausal years.

2. Include foods rich in calcium along with weight bearing exercises to reduce risk of osteoporosis.

3. Don’t eat too late. Late night eating can cause even more weight gain. Last meal should be at least 2 hours before bed time. Also give yourself a 12-hour fasting period. So, if you eat last meal or snack at 7pm, then wait till 7am the next morning, before eating again. That night fast gives the body rest from digestion to focus on other functions.

4. Hormones need cholesterol to function, so it is very important to get in healthy fats, but limit saturated fats. Omega 3-6-9 ratio is an important balance. The north American diet has a huge imbalance with the ratio of Omega 6-3, being almost 20-1 because of heavy meats and processed foods with high levels of industrial seed oils (corn, soy, canola, etc.) The ratio should be more like a 3-1 or 1-1 ratio. Both are important as they counterbalance each other. This disproportionate balance of omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acids, contributes to systemic inflammation, poor fat metabolism, weight gain, and obesity. To counterbalance this, more olive oil, coconut oil, grass-fed beef, butter or ghee, and nuts and seeds high in omega-3s, should be substituted in the diet. A great Omega-3 that helps with estrogen metabolism is freshly ground flax seeds.

This is a column meant for fun and some information About myself: I am a Freelance Photographer you often see me on the side of the road or in various places taking photos of different things animals, birds, places, people etc. l have lived in Lumby just over 8 years,you have seen my photos in the newspaper (Lumby Valley Times) and once in awhile in the Vernon Morning Star, and the Lumby Art Gallery. Photography is my passion. Disclaimer: The information on some of my photos that I write about a lot of times come from the Internet or books I research them, hopefully the facts are as close to the truth as I can come.

Using The Flashlight On The Lawn "Grab the flashlight" my stepfather Jack would say.

No, our power wasn't out, it just meant that it was time to go and get some Dew Worms on our lawn.

Jack would water the lawn earlier in the evening, and when it was a little later it was a perfect time to collect the Dew Worms, other names they can go by are Earth Worms, and NightCrawlers as they can be very active at night time and early morning you will also see them crawling around in the rain. I would grab my pail, and the flashlight. I added some dirt to keep the worms alive. In the morning Jack and I would go down to the lake, he would put the worm on the hook for me, then the rest of the day we would go fishing. Jack loved to fish, he would go to the lake quite often. Sometimes it was just him, sometimes with friends. But a couple of times a month it was my turn.

We caught Bass, and Trout on the days we went.

One day my haul was quite a bit larger than Jack's. I

Jack laughed. We went home and showed my mom, she was very impressed. Jack took the fish and cleaned them. We had some for dinner, the rest went in the freezer for another time.

Dew Worms can be as large as about 25 cm in their length, while they are about 1 cm in diameter.

Their head is usually a darker color than their tail.

Their skin is very slimy and smooth, while they have small bristles coming out of the skin to help them move. Dew Worms do not have eyes, instead they have different cells which make them sensitive to the light. They not only do not have eyes, but they also do not have ears, everything is done by vibration in the ground. So light and vibrations are how they find things. The Dew Worms also do not have any lungs, instead oxygen is absorbed through their skin. if they don't get enough moisture and they dry out they will then suffocate and die. Did you know that sometimes if a dew worm is cut in half it can still survive for a short time. Only the head end can regenerate into the lower end to make it a worm again, but they don't usually live very long after being cut in half.

Dew Worms are Hermaphrodites (containing both male and female organs that are reproductive.) To reproduce Dew Worms must mate with the same species, the two Dew Worms will lie beside each other transferring sperm to each other. They each will lay capsules (eggs) in the spring and the fall, and from the capsules will be two tiny worms that are completely formed. Dew Worms are able to mate several times a year, laying quite a few eggs, but they may not have a lot of offspring. Their diet consists of dead leaves, other types of plant debris, bacteria, fungi, and also they will eat the remains of dead animals.

They have multiple uses, they are great to dangle off the end of your hook for fishing, aerate your soil, help with your composting,a tasty treat for Robins and other wild birds, insects, frogs, fish (of course,) toads, snakes, mice, moles,raccoons, bears, etc. Dew Worms are loaded with animal protein which helps the birds and animals just as protein is good for us as well.

Dew Worms are great for many things, but they also have a big downside: They can be a problem to your lawns, but they can also be trouble at an airport after a heavy rain. When there has been heavy rains at the airports the Dew Worms come out and are all over the asphalt, causing hoards of birds to come for their snack. The birds can fly into the plane engines, or into the windows of the cockpit. Every year airports spend a lot of money trying to control the overflow of the Dew Worms.

Here are a few ideas to keep the worms at bay in your lawns: aerate your lawns in the spring and fall, making sure to rake the lawn very well. Only water your lawn when it is needed, which by the way is not very often especially if we have a lot of rain that year. Even though Jack would water in the evening to bring out the Dew Worms for fishing in the morning, it really is not a good idea to do this. A patchy lawn can be improved by adding some fresh grass seeds, and if the lawn is too unhealthy you might have to tear it up and start with some new turf. Place a good amount of sharp sand over the areas on your lawn that are patchy. Dew Worms do not like to any abrasive surfaces under them, that's why I was surprised to see this one crawling across the gravel It has been known that Dew Worms can live about 3-8 years in the wild, but when they are in captivity they can possibly live up to ten years.

RDNO Electoral Area Directors Provide over $10,000 to the Good Food Box Society

The RDNO Electoral Area Directors presented a cheque to the Good Food Box Society’s Program Coordinator, Diane Fleming, at the November 4 Electoral Area Advisory Committee (EAAC) meeting. The North Okanagan Good Food Box is a volunteer-run, non-profit, bulk Produce Buying initiative that helps provide families and individuals who face food insecurity with fresh fruit and vegetables.

“These funds will assist us in hiring drivers to help get the food out to families in the more rural areas in the North Okanagan. This will be even more important in the winter months as people are less able to access local produce and find easy transportation to grocery stores. This donation will really help to get healthy food to people in need,” said Donna Antonishak, President of the North Okanagan Good Food Box Society.

This grant will empower the Society to purchase over 400 large food boxes full of healthy produce and is funded from each of the Electoral Areas’ COVID-19 Safe Restart Funds.

Annual Grants Support Economic Recovery In The Interior

People in 55 communities throughout the province, including 19 communities in the Interior, will benefit from more than $17 million in grants in lieu of municipal property taxes this year.

The Village of Lumby has received $4,408.

"Through our annual grants-in-lieu program, we're reimbursing municipalities for the important services they provide to provincial properties so they can fund the services and projects that meet the needs of their communities," said Lisa Beare, Minister of Citizens' Services. "The funding makes a big difference in communities throughout B.C., particularly now, as local governments and the people they serve navigate the economic impacts of the pandemic."

Each November, the Province pays grants in lieu of property taxes to municipalities and regional districts for services they provide in their communities, such as parks, sewers, roads, fire protection and other infrastructure projects. The grants are for properties owned by the provincial government, such as office buildings, warehouses and courthouses. Municipalities use these grants to fund and maintain priority public services and local infrastructure projects.

"Nelson has a number of provincial buildings in our community," said John Dooley, mayor, City of Nelson. "The grant in lieu from the Province is critical in helping fund all of our services, but especially those things we love about our community, including our parks, our cultural and recreation services, and our downtown beautification."

Grant calculations are determined under the Municipal Aid Act. Schools and hospitals are exempt

from paying municipal property taxes and are not part of the grants-in-lieu calculation. Also excluded from compensation under the Municipal Aid Act are provincial assets, including highways, forests, and parks or land under the control, management or administration of a Crown corporation.

"Community leaders here in Nelson and throughout the Interior do incredible work to make sure we all have the infrastructure we need and recreational opportunities for us all to enjoy," said Brittny Anderson, MLA for Nelson-Creston. "That work can be challenging, especially when it comes to budgeting.

When I was on Nelson city council, these grants made that work that much easier, and I'm glad to see that people in Nelson and across the region will continue to benefit from them."

The Ministry of Citizens' Services distributes the funds electronically on behalf of the provincial government.

Quick Facts: • The Province is exempt from paying taxes to municipal governments under the federal Constitution Act. • In 1963, the Government of B.C. recognized its responsibility to compensate municipalities for local services that benefit provincially owned properties.

• That is why, despite the exemption, the B.C. government pays municipalities and regional districts the same general municipal and regional district amount through grants in lieu that would other-

A Win on the Road

U18 Lumby Stars sponsored by Valley Wood were on the road Sunday, November 14 to face off against Salmon Arm 4 (Johnson) at the Hucul Pond Arena. Jack Laventure opened up the scoring for the Stars with a pass from Jace Catt. Ryder Quibell picked up a goal from a sweet pass by Colton Young. It was all Salmon Arm in the second period tying the score up 2-2. Tye Krause

was on fire in the third with a hat trick. Tori Maltman and Ben Gillick both picked up an assist for the afternoon. Final score was 5-3 Stars.

James Wraight had the win between the pipes and made fabulous saves all game. Player of the game jacket went to James Wraight. Next game is the North Okanagan Knights tournament starting Friday, November 19 at 2:30 vs Langley in Enderby.

The value of B.C.’s legal cannabis sector has more than quadrupled over the three years since Canada legalized non-medical cannabis.

The Province now has the third-highest number of legal cannabis retail stores and second-highest number of federal production licence holders in the country.

“As British Columbia passes the three-year anniversary of non-medical cannabis legalization, we are continuing to develop made-in-B.C. approaches to ensure we have a strong and diverse cannabis sector, while working to keep organized crime out of the industry,” said Mike Farnworth, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General. “Legal B.C. cannabis businesses contribute to local economies and generate tax revenues that help pay for the schools, hos-

pitals and services we all rely on.”

B.C. has 375 licensed private retail stores, plus 30 public retail stores under the BC Cannabis Stores brand. A further 57 applications from throughout the province for private stores are approved in principle, as government strives to assess, improve and tighten processing timelines for retail licensees.

To help encourage more B.C. cannabis consumers to shift to the legal market from the illicit, government is launching Buy Legal, a public education ad campaign encouraging people to buy cannabis from provincially authorized cannabis retail stores that offer regulated and tested products. This campaign also emphasizes helping to strengthen local economies and keep profits out of the hands of illegal operators and organized crime. The ads contain a single link to online resources, including a map of legal sellers: https://justice. gov.bc.ca/lcrb/map From the start, B.C. recognized the importance of cannabis production as a significant economic driver in many rural regions and has worked to ensure small-scale cannabis growers have an opportunity to enter the legal market.

Support to date includes the Province funding a pilot project in the Central Kootenay region to help 53 businesses receive licence-application support. Seventeen licence types were issued to 12 client organizations and 62 jobs were created, transitioned or maintained by the end of the program in July 2021.
