November 9, 1938 - November 4, 2021 It is with heartfelt sadness that the family announces Willie’s sudden peaceful passing while feeding his “chickens”, the quail in the backyard. He lived an honest life and always stood for what he believed. Willie was born in Medicine Hat to Otto and Georgina Gutzke. They moved to the lower mainland in 1945 and then to Lumby in 1960. In 1969 (52 years ago) he married Kathleen Hornell, daughter of Maurice and Irene Miles. With this marriage he became an instant father, gifted with four children, all under the age of 9. His home which he created was his greatest accomplishment. Willie loved nature, animals, woodworking and a hard days work.

Willie is survived by his Wife Kathleen, Daughter Marilyn (Scott O’Laney) Amber & Josh Yurkowski, Hadley, Mia & Easton. Jeremy & Savannah Long, Cash, Emersyn & Weylon. Son, David (Sheri) Hornell. Karen & Cole Derry. Liane & Drew Leger, Claire & Marissa. Daughter, Gladys (Larry Handley). Reed & Jess Handley. Evan & Delfina Handley, AJ, Freya, Illyria & Violet. their new reality as amputees. They then welcomed amputee veterans following the Second World War, sharing all that they had learned.

These founding members then established the Key Tag Service, which is still going strong today, to fund the Association’s many vital programs including The War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program.

I was born a partial left hand amputee and grew up in CHAMP which provided me with financial assistance for prosthetic devices and offered emotional support. These veterans have left a lasting impact on generations of amputees as they taught us that we should be proud of our amputation and to know that it will not stop us from achieving our goals.

Everyday, but particularly on Remembrance Day, Canadian amputees like me honour these veterans who not only served their country but returned home to make life better for all amputees.

McCARTNEY Dec. 1, 1937-Oct.25,2021

It is with great sadness we are announcing the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Chuck passed peacefully with family by his side. We would like to thank the Doctors and nurses on the 6th Floor of the Vernon Hospital for their attentiveness and kindness.

Chuck grew up in Kaslo, B.C. where he attended school and graduated. He was predeceased by his parents, brothers Ian and David and sister Susan. He is survived by his brothers Norman (Jeanne), Doug (Norah) and sister Nancy. Chuck will be greatly missed by his loving wife Bev, son Trent and daughter Tanis & Boyd (Goettling), Grandsons, family and friends. Chuck enjoyed camping and fishing with his grandsons and watching the young ones play baseball. Curling, golfing, skiing, reading and music were also things he liked to do. Chuck was a partner for twenty-five years with his brothers in a hardware store in Squamish, B.C. and later a distributor for Interstate Batteries in the Okanagan, Kootenay area and Northern B.C. No service by request but donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

What Did The Porcupine Say To The Cactus?... Hey There Good Looking!

The Christmas Cactus

Still our weather holds out! Yea! I am ready to the point that if we got a permanent snow I can live with where my yard is and finish in spring. Thank you Donna for that soothing way of looking at the situation. 99% of the leaves are off my Maple tree and 99% of those are picked up and my plum tree is now leafless. I did see a few flakes on Thursday as I was working outside and the weather forecast did threaten Saturday for a taste but so far so good although Sunday with that cool breeze felt ominous. A friend has given me this subject matter to investigate last year that many are not aware of but many grow this plant and always it brings great joy during the Christmas season. And there is still time to achieve the right results.

The Christmas cactus is truly not a cactus at all but a succulent that grows in the forest regions of Brazil and as such is not treated like a cactus, like a succulent it grows on other plants and rocks allowing the roots to breathe It is of the same family as the Thanksgiving and Easter Cactus, blooming of course at Christmas should all requirements be met. These requirements are quite similar to each of these Cacti with a few small but vital differences. To tell these 3 apart one should note that the Thanksgiving Cactus has very sharp points on its leaves almost claw shaped usually 2 to four per side and its blooms come in many colours, the Christmas Cactus has more rounded scalloped edges to its leaves and it usually blooms in white or pink, the Easter Cactus has very rounded leaves with fine hair like tufts on the ends. They are all known as “short day plants” and basically require the same nutrient, water and sunlight to ensure we have the blooms in the season we want them. All should be grown in indirect light such as what we would get in an eastern facing window any show of red in the plants leaves indicate too much sun and therefore should be moved to more indirect light source. It should also be protected from too much and too little water as well as any direct heat sources.

These plants usually live up to 30 years but also have been documented to be up to 150 years old and passed

from generation to generation. Cuttings are easy to grow all one need do is take any limbs that fall off or take cuttings by twisting the stem off at the leaf junctures and place them in water until roots appear. This pruning should be done once the plant has flowered up to early spring this will help the plant become fuller and bushier and which will increase the number of blooms on your plant. It should be planted and re-potted in soil that is suitable to succulents a mixture of about 2/3 potting soil, 1/3 sand, a very porous mix that can also include cocoa fibre and charcoal, this mix being good for other succulents and orchids. Drainage is important as is the size of your pot. This plant needs good drainage and likes to be root bound re-potting only although a few of the buds may drop off, a complete occurring every 3 to 5 years and only one pot size each drop of the buds will cause flowering to delay another time. Remembrance Day has been recognized in Canada since 1931. However, the occasion was initially known as Armistice Day, and was exclusively a celebration of the end of World War I. Here’s what Remembrance Day is all about today and how you can celebrate it.

Vandalism of Community based monitoring in Cherryville.

To the Editor, The Cherryville Water Stewards are a group of local community member volunteers within the Cherry Ridge Management Committee, managers of the local community forest. The main focus is the protection and awareness of waters in our area. I helped “plant the seed” for that group, once my initial monitoring results of the Shuswap River were shared with friends and neighbors. When I first saw this river, I thought that this is one of the cleanest rivers at this latitude in Canada, if not the world. I started to do spot samples of water quality, as a scientist, just to see, what does a clean

There has been a lot of chatter on SOCIAL MEDIA and EMAILS sent to the LUMBY LEGION on the matter of the Legion being closed on November 11 2021. PLEASE RESPECT THE VERY HARD DECISION OF THE EXECUTIVE BOARD TO CLOSE OUR DOORS ON THIS DAY. We would like to keep our Veterans and our community safe.

Although there will be very few Legions open across Canada, but not all of them, as most are requesting to have an ONLINE SERVICE or a HANDFUL OF PEOPLE AT THEIR CENOTAPH, some Legions are even having an INVITATION ONLY to the services. Some Legions including in BC will not be having a service at all, and just asking people to have 1 minute of silence.

We hope things will be different for next year.

The Lumby Legion is sorry that there cannot be a service inside the Legion on Remembrance Day for this year, this is due to the fact that we will have limited capacity, also due to the fact that not everyone has been vaccinated. The Lumby Legion has no desire to turn away anyone, because we are at a smaller limit than usual or because someone is not vaccinated.

Instead of posting your opinions on Social Media about how things should be done, volunteer and help us out. Or when we are allowed to have General meetings again, you could come to them. You could put your name on the executive board, so that your voice can always be heard, and you can help with making decisions that are not always easy to make.

Remembrance Day will be Thursday November 11 2021, because of the pandemic there will not be a parade again this year.

Our Lounge and office will be closed. Official Wreaths will be placed at the Cenotaph by the Legion Executives.

We will have a small ceremony at the Cenotaph. There will not be any addresses by Public Officials. We will only have the Color Party, and Role Call. If you would like to be at the Cenotaph please remember to stand 6 feet apart, if you cannot do this, wearing a mask is recommended.

As various developments appear or increase in our area, the importance of our monitoring has taken on more immediate significance. We have a had a basic automatic hydrological station on Cherry Creek for several years now to see how it varies from year to year.

This simply looks at water levels. Historically, Water Survey of Canada had a staff gauge (ruler) to measure creek height and a local volunteer would read it. We recently added a multi‐probe water quality sensor to keep a continuous record of some basic water quality parameters, pH, turbidity and conductivity, the more

Recently, the enclosure or housing for the station was vandalized in spite of locks and chains for security. Normally the enclosure holds the data recorder, battery and communication link back to a nearby computer. All locks were broken, the battery removed and extra power and communication cabling was cut and removed. This of course stopped all data collection.

What is most disappointing in all this, is that we are doing this for the good of the community. However, some individuals think their personal needs are more important than the communities’. We will continue our work and, in the meantime, the RCMP Lumby division are investigating. We hope that this event still helps raise awareness within the community of not only water but how important our mountain waters are to the rest of the Thompson‐Fraser river system.

These past few years have been incredibly hard on all of us. A rollercoaster of ups and downs where all we can do is try to see the light at the end of the tunnel! For some, the past few years have been extra hard. Whether it be loss of a loved one, financial troubles, medical issues, etc; or all of the above.

We are honoured to have been given the opportunity to give back to someone in our community, by giving them a “new to them” Honda Civic! It was a very tough decision. We received a ton of amazing nominations. Thank you all so much! We hope to be able to do it again some day!

Hello Lumby Seniors And Future Members

Due to low registrations, as a result of Covid 19 and the inability to provide our normal programming, the Monashee 50+ club/Lumby OAP hall has decided to raise their annual membership fees to $20 per year starting in 2022.

To assist us with this change, the Rusty Spur Feed and Tack store have offered us a donation to supplement/ assist our new and existing members with being able to pay their annual fees this year. This assistance, payment of the additional $5 membership amount, will be provided to all new and existing members who obtain their 2022 membership by December 31, 2021.
