Platinum Jubilee Plans Lacking

To the Editor, In less than 2 months, the Queen will be celebrating her 70th year on the throne. It also means that she will have presided as our head of state for nearly half of the history of this country. Whether one is a Monarchist or Republican, this achievement is without precedent and calls for appropriate celebrations.

While there are plenty of plans afoot in Britain and other Commonwealth countries, we in BC have not heard anything from Ottawa, Victoria or our local municipal / regional governments.

After almost two years, of Covid, the Jubilee offers the opportunity to recognize not only the extraordinary sense of duty and service of the Queen to Canada, but also can recognize the service and sacrifice made

by so many Canadians. Canadians have a long history of coming together to celebrate our communities and each other and the celebrations might include our indigenous peoples, new Canadians, live local celebrity performances, a parade, community block parties and luncheons, tree plantings and more.

School curriculums should include the role of Her Majesty as Queen of Canada.

As we emerge from almost two years of Covid, the Platinum Jubilee celebrations should be able to lighten the mood and remind all British Columbians of our home and heritage.

There will not be another Jubilee in this Reign. Let’s do the right thing.

Winter is Close… Spooky

I hope everyone had a wonderfully spooky Halloween I saw some adorable little ones in their costumes and some incredible Halloween displays. I went out to Armstrong to see a dear friends’ setup and was amazed at what has been added to her show since I was there two years ago. I am also pleased for the nice sunny days we have had even though the nights have been very chilly, we normally have a small, but short lived fall of snow before Halloween but this year it hasn’t hit yet but it will be happen soon. My Maple tree is getting short on leaves and some of them are already picked up and that is my never failing sign that time is running short. I am so close to ready, another week should put me in a good position both in the greenhouse and the yard, the more done now the less needed to do in spring when I’d rather just plan and start my seeds. The yards around Lumby look neat and trim and I hope that means most people are ready for winter. I’m happy to see the leaves on my fruit trees finally falling even though they really didn’t turn colour, I am unsure if this was due to the heat stress from this summers’ heat dome like it is the reason being used to explain why some Cherry trees have blossomed recently in Vancouver.

I wrote a year ago about the Story of Thieves, this was regarding the Bubonic plague back in the 15th century when many millions of people died. (Unlike the pandemic that we are suffering through now

But of course still too many through unwarranted fear, procrastination and a large number who feel their rights are being violated as an excuse will perpetuate this pandemic. Not getting the Vaccine will only deny them the rights to many social functions such as restaurants, bars and clubs, concerts, sports events, travel, weddings, funerals, family get togethers and many other events that we all love and

miss. This will also still put at risk our elderly, children and any vulnerable members of society. I hear that Christmas shopping may be jeopardized by the unavailability of many goods. Perhaps the Vaccination would be a great gift to have for all the people who you cannot see or be with. After all Christmas is all about giving and this may be the one gift you can give for all those on your list and not!

Menopausal Years, Symptoms, Tips and Management - Part 3 Estrogen and Progesterone appear to be main culprits for symptoms in the menopause years. Although, there is one more key hormone that should be addressed, cortisol.

Cortisol is a glucocorticoid hormone, or a steroid hormone, made in the body from cholesterol and is commonly known as the “stress hormone.” Cortisol follows a daily rhythm where it is high in the morning and then declines throughout the day, reaching its lowest point around bedtime.

This is called the cortisol awakening response, or CAR. This surge is normal and healthy, high in the morning to make you feel awake and alert, then a gradual decline throughout the day, with lowest being at night, to make you feel sleepier.

The pattern of cortisol rhythm or diurnal pattern, can be altered to when cortisol is released, like in cases where people work at night, the pattern reverses.

Cortisol levels increase gradually with age anywhere in your 40s onward. In regards to menopause there is a psychological impact that is linked to sleep-wake patterns, eating, physical activity and everyday life challenges.

Cortisol and it’s functions 1. Plays an important role metabolism in how the body uses fats, proteins and carbohydrates.

2. Raises blood sugar because when cortisol is high, it mobilizes sugar as use of energy in “fight or flight” response.

3. Anti-inflammatory – for immune system – like a hydrocortisone cream decreases inflammation 4. Regulates blood pressure 5. Normal cortisol levels maintain bone density 6. Supports a healthy sleep-wake cycle.

So, as you can see cortisol has important functions, but when elevated for long periods of time, problems start to rise. Factors that cause stress can influence levels, they are things like a bad night’s sleep, sitting in traffic, bad news, work, school or family matters, overworking…the list goes on and on. Elevated cortisol that stays high can lead to weight gain, elevated blood sugar, and a feeling of being, wired but tired, can leave you feeling not great.

This is a column meant for fun and some information About myself: I am a Freelance Photographer you often see me on the side of the road or in various places taking photos of different things animals, birds, places, people etc. l have lived in Lumby for over 8 years, you have seen my photos in the newspaper (Lumby Valley Times) and once in awhile in the Vernon Morning Star, and the Lumby Art Gallery.

Photography is my passion. Disclaimer: The information on some of my photos that I write about a lot of times come from the Internet or books I research them, hopefully the facts are as close to the truth as I can come.

100th Year Anniversary June 28 1914, the beginning of WW1 this was called the "War to End All Wars" So much death and devastation, by the end of 1914 over 1 million soldiers from various countries had been killed on the European battlefields. !915: Saw the Allies(Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy, Romania, Japan, United States) try to break up the stalemate by entering Turkey, as Turkey had joined forces with Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, and the Ottoman Empire) in 1914.

1916: Early on in this year the Allies had retreated due to very heavy bloodshed. During this time Germany and Britain had large amounts of offensives along the Western Front with neither

side being able to have a victory. The East was where Germany was successful.

1917: In the beginning of this year saw the Russian Revolution, which Germany overtook. Near the end of 1917 the Bolsheviks had seized all the power in RusContinued on page 9

On October 28th we had the honour of having an Okanagan flag raising ceremony at Charles Bloom Secondary School.

Elder Victor Antoine told us stories of the history of the people who lived in this area for thousands of years. Allan Louis from OKIB Chief and Council shared words of wisdom and Yvonne Oppeneimer sang and drummed the Okanagan honour song.

It is heartfelt sadness that the family of Shirley Marie Warnes announce her sudden and unexpected passing on October 19th, 2021, at the age of 69 years. Shirley was born in Vancouver, B.C. on August 23rd, 1952, to James and Dorothy Lawson.

Shirley is survived by the love of her life, Terry; her children, Mel (Jenn), Sean (Andrea), Donovan (Andie) and Rebecca (Cass); seven grandchildren, Ethan, Roman, Myla, Lennon, Gracie, Charlie and Matteo; two brothers, Rick and Dave Lawson; and numerous nieces, nephews and brother/sister-in-laws. She was predeceased by her parents, James and Dorothy Lawson and her twin sister, Sharon Mangham.

Shirley selflessly devoted her life to caring for her four children (and in later years, grandchildren) with her husband Terry, in the home they built together in 1980. She was always an active member of the Lumby community and could often be found in the gym at Charles Bloom or at the Whitevalley Community Centre.

A celebration of Shirley’s life will be held at a later date.

2 days before Armistice Day on November 9 1918, Lady Moina wrote a reply to Lt. Col. McCrae's poem: "we shall keep the faith" and decided to always wear a Red Poppy as a sign of remembrance and an emblem of '' keeping the faith of all who died". Along with her own poem, "And now the torch and Poppy Red. We wear it in honor of our dead. Fear not that ye have died for naught; We'll teach the lesson that ye wrought in Flanders Fields."

Lady Moina planted Red Poppies all over Georgia USA. Other countries were quick to follow suit.

1920: Lady Anna Guerin, known as "The French Poppy Lady '' was attending the National American Legion Convention being the representative of the YMCA for France, was greatly inspired by Lady Moina's idea of having the Red Poppy as a memorial flower, and thought this could help the needy. Anna suggested that artificial Poppies could be made and sold to raise money to help the children who were orphaned and other people that had been suffering because of the effects of the war.

July 5th 1921 Anna visited Canada, went to The Great War Veterans Association, and asked them to adopt the Red Poppy as the flower of Remembrance to help in the aid of fundraising.

1921:The Red Poppies have been worn for Remembrance Day in different countries: Canada, Australia, and the UK. 1922: New Zealand starts to wear the Red Poppy.

In 1925 War Veterans unified other groups which formed the Canadian Legion.

1948: The US Postal Service released a red stamp

worth 3 cents with an image of Lady Moian Michael, the title on this stamp was "Founder Of Memorial Poppy."

In honor of our Veterans please buy a Poppy, the Poppy campaign will continue until November 11.

Poppies can be worn everyday on the left lapel on your clothing as close to your heart as possible until the end of the ceremonies. You can place your Poppy on a wreath, or at the base of the Cenotaph.

During the year if there are commemorative events like anniversaries of significant battles, a certain memorial service, or other services the poppy may once again be worn. I(f you are to wear a Poppy outside of the Poppy Campaign please get advice from the RCL on the use of Poppies for these events.)

The Poppy Campaign is a very important program with the Royal Canadian Legion. With the monies raised from the donations towards the Poppy Fund it enables the Legions to help Veterans in financial distress, help with getting much needed medical equipment, medical research, home services, long term care, and so much more.

Just outside of Compiegne France while in a railway car, on the 11th day, the 11th month, the 11th hour Germany signed an Armistice (both sides agree to stop fighting with no surrender.)

By the time WW1 ended there were approximately 9 million soldiers that had died, 21 million wounded, and about 5 million civilians that had died from exposure, starvation, and disease.

Lady Moina Michael volunteered at the National YMCA during the war bringing comfort to the soldiers waiting for deployment she saw every day, and encouraging families to "adopt the soldiers". Lady Moina would set up campaigns for people to write to the soldiers that were overseas. While she was volunteering a soldier had left a copy of Ladies Home Journal on her desk, this magazine had a page earmarked with the now famous poem written by Lt. Col. John Mc Crae's In Flanders Field, the poem talked about how devastating the war was, and how many lives had been lost. Lady Moina read the poem, bringing tears to her eyes, in the poem which touched her heart : "To you from failing hands we throw the Torch; be yours to hold high. If ye break faith with us who die, we shall not sleep, though poppies grow in Flanders Fields."
