What’s A Flowers Favourite Band?... Guns And Roses!

The Rose

My sincerest apologies for my absence at the market this past Saturday. What I thought was a week long migraine has turned out to be Shingles and let me tell you is this a treat. I hope to be at next Saturdays market however that will only be if the swelling of my left eye is such that I can see out of it and the pain decreases to the point I can raise my head from my pillow and my stomach stops its horrendous churning. This virus is only contagious to those who have not had Chicken Pox or the vaccine that most of us received as children and they will not get Shingles they will get Chicken Pox. This also can only happen when the lesions are open and will end when they scab over. Lovely.

Many people that love Roses think that they are a difficult plant to grow and therefore deny themselves the pleasure of this fragrant beauty. The information I will be providing comes from personal experience and my go to book, Roses for Dummies. There are many types of roses and each has its attributes and of course its place in our yards, gardens and pots.

Climbing Roses grow long canes which need to be supported along a wall, trellis or fence. The flowers grow along the entire length of the cane, they can be grown vertically along the support you provide and also horizontally. Some only bloom once in the spring but newer varieties will bloom throughout the growing season.

Floribundas have smaller flowers that grow in clusters on a shorter stem. The bush is smaller and flowers continually.

Grandiflora are taller and grow the classic Hybrid Tea type rose that one would get from a florist but they grow in clusters as apposed to the single long stemmed rose known as a Hybrid Tea. Hybrid Teas have large flowers growing on an individual stem. These are the roses grown for flower arrangements. They have fewer leaves at their base and do well with other flowers or herbs growing at their base and do very well in containers with other plants around them.

Miniatures are smaller plants growing the a height of a half foot to 36 inches and are very hardy in a bor-

der or even grown in a pot in a sunny area of your home. I’ve even had one bloom so late in fall that the flower froze and remained in perfect shape over the winter. They are very hardy.

Shrub Roses are hardy, easy to grow large plants that bloom continually during our growing season and are ideal to fill a large space with the many options of colour.

Tree roses are grafts that are put on tall trunks and resemble a tree in shape. They can be anywhere from 2 to 6 feet tall and are ideally grown in pots that need to be Brought in to a controlled climate for the winter as they are delicate.

Roses prefer a slightly acidic soil from 5.8 to 6.2 and the soil should contain plenty of organic matter such as compose, manure, peat moss or shredded bark.

This will help clay soils loosen up and sandy soil retain proper moisture and nutrients. This organic matter should be mixed with the soil that is taken from the hole you dig for planting your rose. This hole should be generous in size about twice the size of the pot that it comes in. If you are growing it in a pot gently lift it in fall and plant up to the bud union (graft) of the plant the place dirt up and over the graft to protect it from freeze thaw conditions over the winter. In harsher climates that ours they may need to be protected from bitter winds Pruning is done in late winter or early spring and is dependent on the type of rose you grow. Roses planted in fall should be done 6 weeks before a heavy frost to allow the roots to settle in and reestablish the root hairs that are damaged during transplant. Although watering at this time is vital, fertilization should be withheld as you do not with to promote green growth. A few teaspoons of epsom salt in the water when planting will help the roots recover faster. Keep the plant moist and resume fertilization in spring then water as needed when the top 2 to 4 inches of soil is dry and water deeply as apposed to often keeping. Mulching is also a good idea. Watering with overhead sprinklers is fine but

be sure to do so early in the day allowing the foliage to dry as this will help with leaf spot and mildew. The Rose requires a balanced fertilizer every 6 weeks and of course the use of epsom salts is a must as this helps flower production and intensifies the colour of your blooms. This should be started in spring once new growth is well under way.

Pruning your roses is not complicated. Begin in spring by removing dead wood that is apparent on your plant. Open up the interior of the plant by removing small and weak stems, this will help with air movement and prevent black spot from developing on the leaves. Prune to keep the plant within its boundaries and to keep an appealing shape and remove spent blooms to encourage them to bloom again.

Volunteer Drivers are Key – Give a Lift!

Some of our seniors do not have their own vehicles and may not even have family in the community, which has left them without the ability to get to health care appointments.

Whitevalley Community Resource is looking for volunteer drivers to assist seniors with their quality of life, independence and connection to the community by providing them with transportation to their appointments.

If you think you might be able to occasionally help out - you need to have a valid driver’s license, and 5 years of driving experience with a clean driver’s abstract. You will supply your own insured vehicle with a minimum of $2 million liability, pass a criminal record check for vulnerable persons, be sensitive towards seniors, and be available Monday to Friday – as per your time preferences.

Our volunteers come from churches, civic organizations, early retirees who are paying it forward, parents who are teaching their children to respect elderly citizens and anyone who has a bit of time to help a senior neighbor.

Volunteer drivers provide seniors who live in Lumby rides to medical appointments in Vernon. A typical round trip takes 2-3 hours, a one-way drop off, only about an hour and you will receive a fuel reimbursement. You will not be asked to support or transport medically fragile seniors.

By volunteering to help local seniors, you are supporting a diverse, inclusive and vibrant community for everyone. For more information on how you can support this important new program, please call Dawn at 250-547-8866.

Notes From the Lumby Public Market Well, we didn't have our Buttertart festival this year, but we still had some Butter tarts at the market this past Saturday. Vanessa, our Bannack girl, had made some Butter Tart Bannack, which was a big hit.

Charlotte, our Popcorn lady, had some homemade Butter Tarts that sold out almost instantly. We had the united church there this week, they made some great Cinnamon Buns, Brownies, and a Butter Tart square. These were great. The ladies from the United Church also made hotdogs, and had hot coffee, they will be back.

As for other new vendors, we also had some great local Honey for sale.

We have a good assortment of Vendors at our Saturday Market. You will find things for all ages. We

Exercise - Type and Timing = Better Sleep Exercising obviously has many benefits to our health. Sleep is one of those benefits which we might not right away relate to exercise. There are some very simple exercises that almost all of us can do, that will improve sleep at night. For health benefits, exercise at anytime of the day is great- just get it in! But if you struggle from insomnia, wakefulness or not being able to get to sleep right away, then when and how you exercise, may help.

It really comes down to our circadian rhythm. This is a 24hour cycle that allows our bodies to carry out certain functions at certain times. It is essentially our body’s internal clock, and its most important function is the sleep-wake cycle. This internal clock is directly influenced by environmental cues, especially light, which is why it is tied to the cycle of day and night (sleepwake). So, if we can alter or tune into our circadian rhythm it should help us sleep better. Below are some benefits to different times of day and type of exercise to help alleviate your sleep struggles.

To fall asleep faster at night, do either aerobic (walking, jogging…), resistance training, stretching, or a combination of all 3 - for about 1 hour in the morning or early afternoon. This helps because at these times it stimulates melatonin release and shifts our circadian rhythm. Outdoors in the morning has an even added benefit because of sunlight exposure helping entrain our circadian rhythm, to fall asleep at night.

Whereas if you are looking for sound sleep throughout the night, then high-intensity exercise later in the afternoon may be

the answer. Lowering levels of orexin, a neurotransmitter that promotes wakefulness can help at this time of day when many or us feel that midafternoon slump. Without enough orexins, the body has a hard time staying awake and alert, so by triggering them at this time of day, may be beneficial to sleep later.

If you have no problems falling asleep, but you find yourself frequently waking up throughout the night, then early evening exercise as resistance exercise or light aerobic exercise, may be best. Make sure not to be too intense at night however, as you don’t want to excessively raise body temperature, as the body need to be cooled down to sleep. Basically, give yourself 2-3 hours before bed for your body to cool down after exercise.

The most important thing is to experiment and find a schedule that fits you. Don’t be afraid to switch things around as exercise is beneficial anytime of day, but unfortunately sleep is. So, if you are having sleep issues, it is better to try adjust your workout time, and or type of workout, to allow for a better night’s sleep. Sleep will also ensure better workouts, help with weight loss or strength goals and of course overall health. If fact sleep is so important that if you don’t get enough sleep, not only can

Colleen’s Corner

This is a column meant for fun and some information About myself: I am a Freelance Photographer you often see me on the side of the road or in various places taking photos of different things animals, birds, places, people etc. l have lived in Lumby just over 8 years,you have seen my photos in the newspaper (Lumby Valley Times) and once in awhile in the Vernon Morning Star, and the Lumby Art Gallery. Photography is my passion. Disclaimer: The information on some of my photos that I write about a lot of times come from the Internet or books I research them, hopefully the facts are as close to the truth as I can come.

Takin' A Stroll Since the work has been going on down at the Besset Salmon Trail I have not been there. Today I took a stroll through there. WOW! What a huge improvement. It was stunning. There is now a new Bike Path it looks great. Also they have a brand new bathroom.

There are now two beautiful fountains, the fountains were in full force. The sun was shining, people walking were all smiles. After being in awe of the fountains while I was looking at them, a female Mal-

lard flew in and landed in the water where the first fountain had been put so of course I took her picture. I carried on. On my stroll ( I was only strolling so that I could stop and take pictures ) Just after the first bridge there was a young boy in the creek with a small bright green net, I asked him what he was catching and he said " little tiny Salmon do you want to see?" "Sure." I said So he put his tiny net in the water, THE LUMBY & DISTRICT and sure enough he caught one. He held it up for me to see, then he gently put PUBLIC MARKET the tiny fish back in the water. it was a male he could be traveling anywhere." I told him to be careful, so he wouldn't get bit, he said he would be fine. We both carried on our ways. When I looked back the grass was so tall, all I could see was the top of the boy's head, and his bright green net waving in the breeze.

As I carried on with my stroll, there were some areas where the leaves were beginning to turn color getting ready for fall, one of the bushes had green and red leaves, looking very cool so of course I took a picture.

I met a couple of people on my stroll on the different paths, one person I ran into had a bucket and a pail. I asked him what he was going to dig up. He said " some minnows, and pan for gold" cool I thought and wished him good luck.

I saw a hawk in a tree, so of course I took it's picture. On my way back to my car I saw a Dragonfly, so of course I took it's picture. Before I got into my car I looked around at the new and improved Salmon Trail, and thought "this was always a nice trail but how beautiful it is now".

Thank you to the Village of Lumby council, for allowing this to happen. Thank you to Parks for putting this together, and thank you to all the workers that continue to maintain this awesome Salmon Trail. Great Job Everyone!

It is perhaps one of the things which make us human; we have been conveying stories since before the written word came into being. Originally stories and the lessons they taught the future generations were passed down orally or through other forms of communication such as the arts.

Joseph Schwartz (1905-1978) built the road in Lumby that today bears his name. The road was built by hand using a shovel and grub hoe and then a horse and scoop.

Eventually a government grader made the road passable for a team of horses.

Gary & Madeline Schwartz (1988)

Enderby and together they raised 3 children: Eileen (Mrs. Ambrose DeCoffe) Jeanine, Mrs. Melvin Hamm and Gary.

Joseph worked as a millwright at Lumby Timber Company and in the 1930's, built Henry Martin and Gunnar Johnson's sawmill in the Monashee.

From 1957 to 1971 he was the "maintenance guy" for schools in Lumby, Mable Lake, Trinity Valley and Cherryville.
