Starting Sept. 13, 2021, proof of vaccination will be required in B.C. for people attending certain social and recreational settings and events.

This important step will continue to increase the vaccination rate across the province and provide confidence to fully vaccinated people that those around them are also fully vaccinated.

"Vaccines are our ticket to putting this pandemic behind us," said Premier John Horgan. "So I call on all eligible unvaccinated British Columbians to roll up their sleeves to stop the spread, and help protect themselves, their loved ones and the people in their community. British Columbia has one of the strongest vaccination rates in Canada with 75% of eligible people now fully vaccinated, but there is still more work to do."

A new order from the provincial health officer will require individuals to provide proof of vaccination to access a broad range of social, recreational, and discretionary events and businesses throughout the province. As of Sept. 13, one dose of vaccine will be required for entry to these settings. By Oct. 24, entry to these settings will require people to be fully vaccinated at least seven days after receiving both doses.

To enter certain spaces, including indoor ticketed sporting events, indoor and patio dining in restaurants, fitness centres, casinos and indoor organized events, like conferences and weddings, people aged 12 and older will be required to show their proof of vaccination.

"I am grateful to every single person who has taken the time to receive their COVID-19 vaccine," said Dr. Bonnie Henry, B.C.'s provincial health officer. "While our vaccination rate continues to rise, we are still seeing waves of transmission primarily amongst those who are not fully vaccinated. These new measures will help reduce transmission and keep our communities safe and ensure we can continue to keep businesses open and safely enjoy much-needed social events."

A secure weblink will be provided and publicized before Sept. 13, where people will be able to confidentially access their proof of vaccination. Individuals will be able to save a copy of their proof of vaccination to their phone to show it when entering or using designated businesses and events. Individuals who cannot access their proof of vaccination online will be provided with a secure alternative option.

Praying Mantis I wish to thank everyone that came to my plant

sale this last weekend at the Lumby and District Public Market! Thanks to your consideration and support 100.00 will be going to the Animal Food Bank in Vernon to help with cost due to these horrific fires. Several evacuees that are staying in our camp grounds in Lumby came through the market and after talking to a few of them, some that have a home to go back to and some that do not, I am overwhelmed by their strength and resilience. It was a relatively quiet market due to the cooler weather or perhaps the fact that some may be unsure as to whether we are opened as we have not been opened when the heat and smoke indexes were too high.

You can rest assured that we will be opened every weekend from now throughout the remaining season as the Curling Rink has kindly provided us shelter if it should be too hot or smokey to be out in the Oval where you will normally find us.

Although I have heard that we have Praying Mantis in BC I had yet to see any until this last week and I have found them both in my greenhouse and in the garden. I am pleased to see them as it is a testament to a healthy organic garden as they are highly susceptible to chemicals and pesticides. They are hard to spot as some are green and others a light brown in colour, they are very slow moving and are capable of adapting to their environment. They are a voracious carnivore and will feast on moths, grasshoppers, aphids, caterpillars and mosquitoes, larger Mantis have been known to catch mice, small snakes, small turtles and even humming birds. They are a distant relative of the grasshopper and cockroaches and are normally found in tall grasses, and uncultivated fields and obviously my greenhouse as well. They are attracted by plants like Marigolds, Cosmos and Dill.

They were initially introduced to North America in the late 1890’s and then spread to eastern Canada and then were noticed in BC by the 1930’s. The male and female are both winged although only the male only actually flies. The female after mating eats her mate and will later will lay up to 300 eggs in a

…. And it’s DONE!!! sack just after the first frost and that will overwinter to hatch out when conditions are favourable in spring as they are highly temperature and humidity sensitive. All but the Chinese Green Praying Mantis are illegal in Canada all others calling for fines of up to 250,000.00 dollars and I am sorry I don’t know which variety I have. I had thought about ordering Praying Mantis many years ago instead of Lady Bugs but thinking of a Lady Bug landing on my shoulder as apposed to a Praying Mantis I decided to go with what I could commit to.

Many people have adopted the Praying Mantis as a pet as it is quite amenable to becoming a pet with one believer being able to transport his Mantis from its enclosure to the garden daily with the Mantis willingly crawling into his hand to be brought back home every evening. The Mantis is capable of learning if only by negative experience and will live for up to a year with the proper environment being met, it does not sting, has no venom nor does it spread infectious disease. I will be sticking to my Dogs and Cat even though, having watched the ones I’ve encountered I do have to admit that I am fascinated.

The Praying Mantis is considered a symbol of good luck, calmness, focus and concentration.

The long-awaited canopy is finally up; it’s an exciting moment for us here at the food bank! I know it’s just a canopy to many, but to us, it means that we have some place for clients, products, and any extras for folks in the community when we have overages, such as extra bread, produce, or fun stuff we can share.

Over the past few weeks, we have utilized the great little vegetable table at the side of the Whitevalley Community Resource Center to put out a few things that we don’t want to send to our farmers if someone else could use them. With the canopy up it will be now possible to also leave a few extra things out on Tuesday afternoons for people to come by and grab if they need them.

Yes, so a couple of great guys stopped by to lend a hand to Robert early one morning last week and by late afternoon and many grey hairs later the structure was up in all its glory. It was a hair-raising experience for many of us on the sidelines I can tell you that! So many thanks go out to those guys who lent a hand, Arley and Burns- you guys are awesome!

Thank you to all for your support and encouragement during this entire project, we are only a step or two away from completion on the back bay and then maybe we can sit back and relax for a while… nope not likely!

In closing, with our 4th wave of this virus underway in our region, I must request that all orders are followed- this requires mandatory mask wearing once again, please respect us when visiting by wearing a mask. If you need any, we have an abundance available along with hand sanitizer- don’t be shy, don’t get sick-just ask!

Health & Safety Remain Focus For New School Year B.C. students will return to school next month and can look forward to full-time, in-person learning and resuming sports, music and other extracurricular activities, while mask requirements and other health and safety measures remain in place to keep schools safe.

“We know how excited students and families are about being back in school with extracurricular and sports programs and how important it is for children to be connected to their teachers and friends on a full-time basis,” said Jennifer Whiteside, Minister of Education. “We also know we can do this safely, even as the pandemic continues to present challenges. B.C. was one of the few jurisdictions in Canada to keep schools open and safe last year thanks to the monumental efforts of everyone in the education system. The precautions we are announcing today allow students to continue learning in school with safeguards in place, so they have every opportunity to achieve their best.”

Research by the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) last year noted a significant impact on students from remote learning, including interrupted learning, increased child stress, decreased connection, increased loneliness and mental and emotional health effects. Studies by the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority and Fraser Health Authority showed that after a resumption of in-class learning, schools were not significant sources of COVID-19 transmission.

In addition to the continuation of indoor mask requirements for all K-12 staff, visitors and students in grades 4 to 12, changes to the health and safety measures also include the ability for health authorities to introduce additional regional measures specific to individual schools or school districts in instances where community transmission rates are higher.

There will be greater opportunities for school sports and extracurricular activities, continued increased ventilation and improvements in schools, and daily cleaning and disinfecting protocols, along with a continued focus on hand hygiene. Students will continue to be required to complete daily health checks and stay home when feeling sick. Rapid response teams will continue to operate throughout B.C., working with health authorities and school districts to provide support and review school com-

municable disease plans to keep schools safe.

“We know last school year was challenging in many different ways for B.C. students, but they persevered and finished the school year strong,” said Dr. Bonnie Henry, provincial health officer. “While we are encouraged to see rising vaccination rates in most parts of the province, we need every eligible British Columbian, including children and youth aged 12 to 19, to receive vaccinations as they begin the new school year.”

School districts will continue to ensure all mechanical heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems are designed, operated and maintained to their standards and specifications so they continue to work properly. All school HVAC systems will continue to be regularly inspected and, moving forward, provincial funding will continue to be made available to upgrade or replace HVAC systems through routine capital programs.

A total of $87.5 million has been used to improve school ventilation in B.C. schools, including $77.5 million through provincial routine capital funding specifically for HVAC system upgrades or replacements in 2020-21 and 2021-22. The projects supported through this funding include full boiler and air-handling system replacements, larger ductwork, updating occupancy sensors and direct digital control units for building automation controlling airflow rates and portable HEPA filtration units in classrooms. Plus, in the 2020-21 school year, school districts used $10 million in federal pandemic-specific funding to upgrade more than 45,000 ventilation filters in B.C. schools.

The updated provincial K-12 communicable disease guidelines were developed in collaboration with the BCCDC, Office of the Provincial Health Officer and K-12 education steering committee, which includes rightsholders and education partners.

The public health guidance for child care settings remain in effect.

The best way to prevent the spread of COVID-19 is for all British Columbians who are eligible to get vaccinated. Health authorities will target students, teachers and school staff in vaccination campaigns over the coming weeks.

“As part of your back-to-school preparations, we

encourage youth to walk in now to get vaccinated at one of B.C.’s vaccination clinics, or go to a pop-up or mobile or community vaccine event around the province,” said Dr. Penny Ballem, executive lead of B.C.’s immunization effort. “As students, parents and families prepare and plan for back to school, they can take advantage of the many locations and opportunities to receive a first or second dose. It’s more convenient than ever to get a COVID-19 vaccine.”

The return to school is being supported with additional resources.

In June, the Ministry of Education announced $43.6 million in COVID-19 relief funding for the 2021-22 school year. This included $25.6 million in new one-time funding to support health and safety measures, First Nations and Métis students, mental health services and independent schools. The remaining $18 million was allocated for school districts to address learning loss due to the pandemic.

Chickpeas

In past “Corners” I have wrote about the benefits and importance of nutrient dense foods to our health, in relation to protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals, inflammation and food sustainability. There is a food that meets all these qualifications and stands out quite notably – Chickpeas! Its different types are variously known as gram or Bengal gram, garbanzo or garbanzo bean, or Egyptian pea. About 80-90% of chickpeas are cultivated in India but they are grown in over 50 countries.

Chickpeas appear in early recordings in Turkey about 3500 BCE and in France 6790 BCE. They are the healthiest in their legume family of black beans, white beans, lentils, dry peas and edamame, delivering the most nutrients. They are an excellent source of carbohydrate, protein, fiber, B vitamins, and some minerals, including high doses of zinc, which boosts immunity and fights inflammation. They are also low in calories, have 11 grams of protein and 35 grams of fiber! Fiber is great for digestion and goes against total carbs, so the higher the fiber the lower your net carbs.

Chickpeas are a big deal, even making their mark with the Untied Nations as a superfood along with governments and food industry agencies around the world. The reason for this is because Chickpeas fix their own nitrogen from the atmosphere, which leaves extra stores in the soil for future crops to consume and

requiring less fertilizer. Nitrogen is important for plant growth/structure, plant processing or metabolism and the creation of chlorophyll. Without this, the plant couldn’t grow taller or produce enough food.

Another amazing feat, is that Chickpeas under proper farming conditions, can capture and store atmospheric carbon dioxide which is one method of reducing global climate change. To understand this, global climate change is to do with Greenhouse gases. Greenhouse gases absorb infrared radiation. Carbon dioxide is one of those gases and since there are more Greenhouse gases this will absorb more heat causing the earth to get much warmer.

Another thing is they are Moderately easy to grow.

They like full sun and can be started in doors about 4 weeks before last average frost in the spring or put directly in the ground once soil has warmed up to about 10’C. Seeds sprout in 14-21 days. As mentioned above, Chickpeas fix nitrogen in the soil so they are great to plant with beets, Brassicas, carrots, celery, chard, corn, cucumber, eggplant, peas, potatoes, radish, and strawberries. Although avoid planting near chives, garlic, leeks, and onions.

Now what about taste, flavour matters and chickpeas aren’t just Hummus but can be a lot more than that.

Chickpeas are celebrated throughout the Middle East,

Asia and the Mediterranean, with a variety of versatile, satisfying dishes from salads, to sides or even main dishes. They pair beautifully with aromatics (garlic, onions, chilies, ginger), vegetables, grains, salads, and pasta. They are simple, just open a can, rinse and serve, add, sauté or roast. Try blend with potatoes for an exciting paté spread – be creative.

Temperatures had reached highs of 42- 44 degrees celsius in fahrenheit that = 107.6 - 111.2 ( here is a very simple way I found on the internet to calculate celsius into fahrenheit we will use the 42 degrees celsius, multiply that number by 9 divide by 5 plus 32 = 107.6) (42x9÷5+ 32) my house inside at one point had reached 94 degrees fahrenheit, it was unbearable.

We then hooked up an air conditioner, it did help,but even at night time it did not really cool down.

People were getting very ill with heatstroke, and other things. Hospitals were overrun with patients coming in affected by the heat. Sadly some people even died from the heat. Heatstroke is not very pleasant, it can cause so many different things that make you feel sick and horrible. You can feel dizzy or very lightheaded, you could have a throbbing headache.

Your skin could be very red, hot and dry. You might have cramps or some muscle weakness. You could have nausea, or even vomit. Your breathing may be very rapid and your heartbeat racing , there could also be some hallucinations that you might have. You may

have one or all of the above symptoms.

You could need medical attention.

Don't forget that your pets can be badly affected by the heat as well, they too can get heatstroke. Be sure that you and your pets are well hydrated.

This morning I got up and my place was very cold. 10 degrees celsius on my thermostat outside (50 degrees fahrenheit) inside the house it was only 62 fahrenheit. Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, that is way too cold for me. I don't want to put on the electric heaters, or the pellet stove after all, it is only August 23 so I put on the electric fireplace that we got for a great deal last year, I am very glad we found this. It doesn't radiate a lot of heat but it definitely takes some of the chill off. I put on my infrared heater, and sit under my blanket while I write this week's column. Wow, Hydro is going to love me this year,using the air conditioners, and the heaters all in one month. I can just see the dollar bills floating out the door. "Oh look, there goes a

hundred dollar bill putting on its wings to fly out to Hydro now" By the end of the week the temperatures will be up a little higher so hopefully my place will not be as cold.

The weather has been so weird this year, we don't know from day to day what the temperatures will be like.

Since pre-history Storytelling has been an integral part of human expression in every culture across the world.

From the 30,000 year old cave murals at Lascaux that depicted a history of rituals and hunting, to when the idea of fairy tales came out of France in the 17 th century and even to our modern storytelling such as comics or storyboarding for the big screen.

Storytelling has become a way of conveying events in words and images as a means of entertainment, education, cultural preservation and to instill moral values into future generations.

Almost all Storytelling has been conveyed through or accompanied by some form of art, from the illustrations in a children’s book of fairy tales, to the Bayeux Tapestry which tells the depicts the events leading up to the Norman conquest of England in an embroidered cloth nearly 70meters

in length detailing a historic event.

We invite you to explore the expression of Storytelling in any of its many forms and share it through the gallery. This show is open to all forms of storytelling from the written word, narrative illustrations, photography, true stories or fantasy.

Submissions are limited to three (3) pieces per artist and need to be delivered to the gallery with application form by August 30th .

Norm Adam’ First Texas Cook Book #3

In 1883 when Houston was a city of 16,000 the ladies of the First Presbyterian Church collected hundreds of favourite recipes that had been handed down for generations. That was how the FIRST TEXAS COOK BOOK was compiled. Thanks to Norm Adams, who shared his 1977 reprint of the original cook book. Over the past few weeks, the LVT is pleased to have printed some of these recipes for you. This is the last week for Norm Adams’ First Texas Cook Book recipes, if you’d like to see more, drop Andrew a line at the email below.

Everyone seems to be making pickles lately, so to close out this series we present a few classics courtesy of Norm Adams.

Green Tomato Sweet Pickle One peck of green tomatoes, slice them in the afternoon, six onions, sliced in the same way; sprinkle salt between layers of each, and let remain over night, then drain carefully. Put all on the fire in a kettle of fresh water and boil until thoroughly done, then drain over a colander, and lay out on dishes to cool. One gallon best vinegar, three pounds sugar, one-half ounce mace, one box mustard, onehalf ounce ginger, one teacup oil, onehalf ounce cloves, one tablespoon black pepper, ground. Mix all, and put in the fruit cold.

Peach Sweet Pickle-No.1 Seven pounds peaches, three pounds good brown sugar, one quart vinega , one teaspoon cinnamon, one of cloves, one of spice. Boil the sugar, vinegar and spices fifteen minutes, then add peaches and boil under tender.

Cucumber Sweet Pickle One gallon of pickles, sliced thin, one quart vinegar, three pints white sugar, mace, ginger and cloves, lemons cut up in it. Let syrup boil well before putting in the cucumbers. When the cucumbers are put in, let it come to a boil, and take them out.

Plum Sweet Pickle Three pounds of fruit, one pound sugar, one quart vinegar, and spices to the taste. Boil sugr and vinegar together and then put in fruit and boil

until thick enough to keep.

And, a final word of wisdom from the First Presbyterian ladies on making cakes To insure excellent cake, the first essential is, the use of good materials.

Do not expect a satisfacory result if your flour is second-class, your yeast powder poor, your butter and eggs not sweet and fresh. It is poor economy that induces one to purchase indifferent flour. Always buy a brand you know to be reliable. Yeast powders so flood the land that it is often a difficult matter to decide which to use. We wold recommend, as in every way satisfactory-wholesome as well as efficacious-“Crawford’s Baking Powder,” manufactured in Houston Texas. A home manufacture, we are able to trace it to its source, and find it all right.

By getting vaccinated prior to Sept. 13, every British Columbian can continue to access these events and settings.

Details on specific COVID-19 safety requirements for K-12 and post-secondary schools will be available this week.

How it works • As of Sept. 13, people in British Columbia will be required to be partially vaccinated with at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine to access certain businesses and events.

• As of Oct. 24, people in British Columbia will be required to be fully immunized, at least seven days after receiving two doses of COVID-19 vaccine, to access the same list of businesses and events.

• In the interim, in areas where community transmission is increased significantly or where there are outbreaks, the requirements to be fully vaccinated to access these events and activities may be required at the direction of the local medical health officer.

Here is the full list of settings where proof of vaccination will be required: • indoor ticketed sporting events • indoor concerts • indoor theatre/dance/symphony events • restaurants (indoor and patio dining) • night clubs • casinos • movie theatres • fitness centres/gyms (excluding youth recreational sport) • businesses offering indoor high-intensity group exercise activities • organized indoor events (eg. weddings, parties, conferences, meetings, workshops) • discretionary organized indoor group recreational classes and activities • Individual businesses or event organizers may also implement these requirements earlier as part of their ongoing safety plans. Businesses or institutions choosing to adopt their own vaccination policies beyond those set out in this order will be responsible for doing their own due diligence.

tially access their proof of vaccination through a secure website. A weblink will be provided and publicized widely before Sept. 13. To access proof of vaccination an individual will need: • name • date of birth • personal health number (PHN) • Individuals will be able to save a copy of their proof of vaccination to their phone to show when entering or using designated businesses and events.

• A second, secure option will be provided for people who cannot access their proof of vaccination online through a call-in centre (call centre details to be made public in coming days).

• Individuals will show proof of vaccination in the settings listed in the PHO order, alongside valid government ID. • Proof of vaccination will also be required for people visiting from outside of B.C. using a provincially/ territorially recognized official record alongside valid government ID from the jurisdiction. For individuals visiting from outside of Canada, they will be required to show their proof of vaccination used to enter the country and their passport.

• The measures will be time limited through to Jan. 31, 2022, subject to possible extension.

• The measures set out above do not apply to K-12 schools (public and independent) and before-and-after school programs for students. Student-only events and activities within K-to-12 public and independent schools and before and after school programs are excluded from providing a proof of vaccine as they will be covered by specific guidelines for school and child care settings. Guidance for these settings related to students will be provided. The measures do apply to large indoor events (theatre, concerts) attended by parents, family and/or the public.

• The measures set out above will, as relevant, apply to post-secondary campuses. Student housing will be a part of the public health order identifying where proof of vaccination is required and will be in effect for Sept.

7. Further guidance for these settings related to students will be developed in the coming days in consultation with public health, including which types of student housing facilities will be included.

Travel can be an excellent way to stimulate the mind, connect with a wider community, and just have fun. Exploring new environments and meeting new people can help older adults stay both physically active and socially engaged. Whether the idea is to experience more of the world, spend time with loved ones, or just take a break from the everyday routine, travel can bring enormous rewards.

Getting older certainly doesn't have to keep anyone from having new adventures.

Adults between the ages of 54 and 72 found that virtually all of them planned to take at least one domestic trip in 2022. Nearly a third anticipated taking four or more trips, almost half said they expected to travel both within Canada and internationally.

Some airlines offer reduced fares for older adults, although they might not widely advertise such fares.

However, you may need to call and ask what's available (and be sure to check if it's any cheaper than the normal adult rate). Some other advantages of traveling as a senior are older travelers can get a bit of a break when it comes to security screening. For instance, if they're over 75, seniors do not have to take shoes off at airport security (although the shoes may still be swabbed for traces of explosives). They can also leave

light jackets on saving you more time as you board your flights.

Traveling should come as a great escape after the pandemic and is encouraged along with all safety precautions and restrictions in place. Don’t forget to check your vacation plans and see what restrictions apply to the areas you are seeking to travel to beforehand.

Before planning any trip: • Ask your doctor if you are physically capable of handling the trip.

• Get advice about how to manage your medical conditions during travel.

• Learn how to adapt the medication regimen for a different time zone.

• Find out if vaccinations are necessary.

• Get a signed note from the doctor that details all of prescriptions.

• You might also want to ask the doctor to provide a statement about things like knee or hip implants your parent has that could set off security alarms.

Senior travel can be immensely rewarding. So read through the list of tips above—and start planning your next adventure!

22 school year include, but are not limited to, the following changes: The mask mandate in place at the end of the 202021 school year will stay in place to start this school year. All K-12 staff visitors, and students in grades 4 to 12 will be required to wear non-medical masks in all indoor areas of the school and on school buses.

Students in kindergarten to Grade 3 will be strongly encouraged to wear masks.

• The mask guidance will also be supported by a provincial health order on mask wearing.

• Cohorts, also known as learning groups, are no longer recommended by public health as a COVID-19 mitigation measure and will not be used.

• Local public health orders may be put in place for entire regions or communities, including schools.

For schools, the local medical health officer may issue a recommendation for an individual school, a grouping of schools, a school district, all schools within the health authority region or some combination thereof, to implement specific additional health and safety measures during times of elevated risk.

• Any additional regional measures put in place by

local medical health officers are likely to be similar to those in place during the 2020-21 school year, and may include: • limits on gatherings and events; • changing room arrangements or incorporating more activities that maximize space between people and reduce face-to-face contact; and • limiting visitors.

• The following cleaning frequency guidelines must be adhered to when cleaning and disinfecting schools: • General cleaning of the premises, and cleaning and disinfecting of frequently touched surfaces, at least once in a 24-hour period and when visibly dirty.

• Extracurricular activities are allowed in line with any local, regional, provincial or federal health orders in the community.

• Although physical distancing of two metres is no longer a recommended public health measure for the K-12 setting, there are strategies that schools can continue to use to create space between people and to support students and staff going back to school. Examples include: • reminding students and staff about respecting others personal space, and using visual sup-
