Drought brings angling closures to Okanagan

Effective immediately, recreational fishing has been closed in most areas of the South Okanagan.

This applies to all streams in Management Units 8-1 through 8-15 and Management Units 8-21 through 8-23, which are located in the regions around Christina Lake, Grand Forks, Osoyoos, Oliver, Penticton, Keremeos, Princeton, Summerland, Peachland, Kelowna, Vernon, and Cherryville. These closures will remain until Sept. 15, 2021.

Low water conditions combined with higher than normal water temperatures are creating difficult conditions for fish, particularly those released after being caught, such as bull trout.

The Southern Interior has experienced drier than normal conditions in 2021 with early snowmelt and low flow rates.

Several streams are already in Drought Levels 3-4. The river forecast centre is projecting continuing conditions across the short-range outlook.

ter temperatures of 25-30 C. Temperatures in this range are stressful for fish and any released after being caught will have difficulty recovering.

The Thompson-Okanagan Fish and Wildlife Branch recommends anglers avoid waterbodies where surface water temperatures exceed 20 C. Anglers are encouraged to report fish kills to their local Fish and Wildlife office or RAPP line (1 877 952-7277) and refer to the online version of the Freshwater Fishing Regulation Synopsis for angler alerts and potential in-season fishery closures.

GIS Reduction I am writing to alert residents to the fact that the federal government in its wisdom has cut off thousands of low-income seniors ages 65 – 75 from the Guaranteed Income Supplement. The cut-off penalizes people who made a bit more from the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) or the Canada Recovery Benefit. No one realized that receiving a benefit would affect their yearly income; the cut off for single seniors is $18,984, with a monthly maximum of $936, and for couples the cu toff is $45,504.

One low-income senior found out two days before that there would be a drastic reduction, not providing adequately for rent, utilities, food, and necessities. Green MP Paul Manly wrote that the new regulation “fails to account for the costly ramifications of forcing low-income seniors into greater poverty.”

It is ironic that images of seniors huddling in the snow and begging will—I hope--not sit well when electors go to the polls to elect a federal government, allegedly this September. Cartoons of Justin Trudeau as the character Scrooge in The Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens will evoke earlier bad times when poor people were sent to the workhouse and divided up into the deserving and undeserving recipients of charity. Giving billions to large corporate entities in the name of saving the economy will not sit well if ordinary Canadians are left out in the cold so to speak.

If you care about your country and citizens, please let your political representatives know about how you feel about this matter. Let’s not be apathetic!

Blaze of Craziness What trying times we are living in; Covid, the fires and the general sadness that seems to be out there !!! Wow!!!

Over the past week as a patient I have had the unfortunate privilege to be a daily witness to the Vernon Jubilee Hospital emergency department mayhem, I feel so bad for these tireless insanely overworked individuals!!! It made me think of all the other emergency personal out there.

So go ahead to today, Friday the 13th of August and as I wait in the emergency for my treatment I am looking at a young man who is obviously exhausted…a young forest fire fighter…oh I just want to hug him and tell him that he will be ok. I don’t know if he will or not…he’s exhausted!!! He sits slumped in the chair, head hanging and legs spread out in front of him. He shakes his head every

once in awhile to wake himself up. You can smell the acrid smoke wafting off of him and see the ash and dirt smudged into his clothing and his skin. He’s waiting to be seen by the Dr. I don’t know what happened to him from here but I can’t help but to think of all those other souls out there battling this blaze of craziness!!!!

I hope people realize how hard our emergency personal are working! I’m hoping we don’t paint those individuals with the same governmental paint brush as the decision makers (good or bad)!!!

These people in the fires are fighting daily, hourly and minute by minute and are putting their lives on the line for all of us!

I know the system we have today needs to change, as there simply isn’t enough hands to protect everyone’s homes and lands as they are limited in numbers and by government controls. So let’s make that change but not by calling the fighters names, not by abusing their hard work, by lobbying the government, by making a stand to protect ourselves and others! Maybe we need to go back to the way it was years ago and enlist “regular” people to fight as well. Allow those individuals to stay on their properties to fight the fires. As the old saying goes “many hands make light work”. Yes, I know it’s dangerous but for Pete’s sake we have to come to some kind of happy medium along the way somewhere. We NEED TO STOP TAKING IT OUT ON THE WORKERS!!!

These fire fighters, nurses, ambulance personal, Doctors, house keepers, porters, greeters, volunteers, etc etc etc…are working long long hours facing people on a daily basis who are frightened, sick, exhausted, bewildered, confused and are as frustrated as everyone else!

I just want to give a shout out to all these people, if I wore a hat I’d take it off to them!!!

What The Worst Part About Crabgrass?... It’s Not Lobster!

Crap Grass

Although I know that Crap Grass is actually called Crab Grass I’m sticking to this name. It is a more than annoying weed that first appears in your grassy areas, it has the ability to produce 150,000 seeds and that is from each plant and these seeds can remain viable for a long time. Not only does it produce this horrendous amount of seeds but it will also spread by its roots and therefor is a particularly formidable, invasive plant. There are about 33 varieties of Crap Grass and to top it all off and although it is nutritious for animals to consume it will attract pests that you do not need or want in your garden. To eradicate Crap Grass one has to be on top of it early in the spring. If you should have a Forsythia growing in your yard it is about the time of this plant flowering in spring (a temperature of about 55 degrees) that action should be taken with a pre-eminent herbicide and thankfully an organic and economical solution is available in the form of Corn Gluten Meal. This will not only help resolve the Crap Grass problem but will also help fertilize the areas where you apply it and also works on other grass invading weeds! However, Crap Grass will have to be removed in some areas like garden beds by a thorough weeding and it is a plant that needs to be aggressively weeded as it has roots that seem to grow to the depths of hell. In pots it will circulate around the pot to the point that repotting is the only option. It is an opportunistic weed that flourishes in grassed areas that are not well maintained and will smother other good grasses leaving bare patches that are great for the germination of some of the seeds it will produce and it will grow with great pleasure. Mowing will not prevent its spread and chemicals like weed and feed do nothing to halt its progress. It loves the heat and flourishes in dry, poor soil and weekend lawns caused by dry hot summers like we are experiencing, its best season being mid summer as in July and August.

So for a post emergence attack one should be sure to fertilize and maintain the lawn, de-thatch, and aerate, give your lawn a good, deep watering weekly rather than less water offered more often. I personally would like to pave my lawn or maybe an artificial turf paint-

ed green for the summer. LOL. With its ability to spread so rapidly and easily, a concerted effort will be needed to maintain some control. If it stayed in the lawn and stayed green which it doesn’t as it will be quick to die in off in fall leaving nasty bare patches, and if it didn’t spread to my garden I might not be so offended. You can use solutions of salt and vinegar or baking soda but that will need to be applied very carefully as that will also kill other garden plants as well as any perennials and any good grasses that are around the area that you have applied it. I have done some serious weeding taking as much of the root as possible and this does work well but with a plant producing so many seeds it will certainly be an ongoing event. type plants. Seniors Benefit from Pet Therapy

Pet therapy is one of the long used treatments for health problems, depression and mood disorders particularly. But just how effective could it be to renew your health?

Mental health challenges, namely Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), end of life trauma, and Alzheimer’s disease have been proven to be coped with using pet therapy. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have also marked the use of animals to reduce the feeling of loneliness, blood pressure and cholesterol.

One of the key advantages of animal-assisted therapy is that it takes your mood and energy levels to a different level, which is very useful for anyone recovering from an illness. While pet therapy is long praised for showing significant improvement in health, there are some scientific studies to support the treatment.

Pet therapy is not just restricted to dogs and cats; it could be any animal that’s worth including.

144 participants from Italy were exposed to canary bird, a plant, and neither. They were provided with specific instructions to care for what they were exposed to for a period of three months. After completion of the stipulated period of time, those who cared for the canary scored well in psychological symptom testing compared to those who cared for a plant and those who had neither of them.

A recent study, which proves why dogs and cats are deployed in shelters each year, is supportive of the effectiveness of pet therapy. Veterans struggling with trust rebuilding, PTSD, and dementia showed great signs of improvement by having a dog as a pet.

Ida Willems (1918)

Ida Willems (1899-2001) became a teacher in Saskatchewan at the age of 16. Some of her students were older than her, but they misbehaved - they were there to learn. She married Tony Willems in 1923 and settled in Lumby in 1936. She loved to teach and taught for many years in Lumby. She retired in 1969. One of Ida's fondest memories was being named "Queen" of the Legion Bi-Centennial (1940-1990) and riding in a horse drawn carriage with Pat Duke who was "King" of the Legion.

Am I Really Hungry?

Stomach growling, loss of energy, or a nauseated feeling, then yes you may be hungry. But here are some other factors going on that may make you think you are hungry: 1. Tired It kicks the digestive system into having a job and keeping you awake. Also, the body was meant to digest food sitting or standing, not lying down.

This is why you might have heard not to eat too late, or close to bed time.

2. Stress Hormone cortisol adrenaline pump = high blood pressure and hunger signals 3. Sadness emotional eating Changing your eating habits when you have more stress in your life.

• Eating when you are not hungry or when you are full.

• Eating to avoid dealing with a stressful situation.

• Eating to soothe your feelings.

• Using food as a reward.

4. Cravings This could be an endorphin rush from certain foods - like sugar, or a mind state an association with a smell or place, or something that you may be lacking in your diet. A few examples; if you are lacking omega 3 fatty acids you may crave chips, or if you are low in magnesium, you may crave chocolate.

5. Hormonal changes/fluctuations With women in the week before their menstrual cycle, hunger may be increased due to changes in hormones. Increased levels of progesterone and decreased levels of oestrogen. Oestrogen can have the effect of suppressing your appetite, while progesterone is linked to an increase in appetite.

6. Medication Some drugs, like certain steroids and antidepressants, can stimulate appetite, so you eat more 7. Out of routine.

When in routine like a set scheduled day, as in a work day, you may have planned your meals and snacks to eat at available set times. More thought is put into your food and portions at those set times. On a day with no set schedule, you tend to be less regimented with less intention put towards portion size, timing and food choices.

The reason for this is a lack of fluid can make it difficult for organs like the liver to release glycogen (stored glucose), hence, it can actually trigger food cravings.

Some of these things may seem obvious to deal with and others a little more difficult.

When thirsty make sure to adjust your water intake

so that you get adequate intake throughout each day.

When out of routine start making yourself more aware before mindlessly putting something in your mouth.

If always tired, start trying to get more sleep. This could also be due to stress.

The Skies Are Getting Scary!

Last night Tim had gone to see one of his friends.

He came into the house and said " you need to see this, bring your Camera!"

I quickly grabbed my Camera without asking any questions and went out to the van which was still running.

Tim drove us out to the corner where Rawlings Lake Road and Mable Lake Road meet. Here the Sky was so dark and ominous, it was scary.

We drove down Rawlings Lake Road towards

Hwy 6. The clouds were following us, the sky was not as dark but still it had a creepy feeling in the air.

When we got into town we needed gas looking down the street at the 4 way stop sign, you could see where there was a line, on the left side it was clear, bright and with no clouds on the right side it was still dark and cloudy, it seemed apocalyptic!

Shortly after we got home, I looked out the window, grabbed my camera, and said to Tim "OMG you need to come and see this.!" The sky was a brilliant orange.

Do you remember a couple of weeks ago this happened as well? The Sky got pitch black, it was only 6:00 pm yet it was darker than Midnight without a moon. Then all of sudden there was a brilliant orange glow. It was very scary then too. The whole time all we could smell was smoke. This might be happening more than once or twice.

Our air quality for the last couple of weeks has been extremely poor.

Did you know that this past Saturday August 14 2021, with all the smoke surrounding us by 6:00 pm Lumby air quality had a rating of 405 which was 45 times higher than regular exposure, we were classified as Hazardous!

Earlier in the day our rating had been 281 which was 26 times higher than regular exposure making it Very Unhealthy. It is recommended that when the air quality becomes unhealthy to wear a Mask Outdoors, Run an Air Purifier, Close Your Windows, Avoid Outdoor Exercise.

Breathing in all this smoke can cause you to have: Coughing more than usual, Trouble Breathing, Wheezing, Asthma Attacks, Stinging Eyes, Scratchy Throat, A Runny Nose,

Irritated Sinuses, Headaches, More Tired than usual, Chest Pain, Fast Heartbeat. All of these symptoms can occur in anyone even if you haven't had them before.

Did you know that humans are not the only ones affected by this smoke, our animals are also affected. They also can develop respiratory ailments. Here are some signs to look at your pet for: Gagging and Coughing, Their Breathing is difficult, they may open their mouths and have increased noises when Breathing. They could have excessive watery eyes, or an eye irritation. There could be inflammation in their throat or mouth, or some symptoms that are like Asthma . Their rate of Breathing may have increased. They seem to have more Fatigue or some Weakness. They could be Disorientated or seem to be Stumbling.

They may not have an appetite, or not drink enough water. If you see any of these symptoms appear in your pets, call you Vet. You can help to protect your pet by keeping them indoors with the windows closed as much as you can.

Have them go out to go to the bathroom then in again as soon as possible.

If you have a Bird that you sometimes take outside, with all the smoke in the air, don't do this as they are very susceptible.

I know it is much harder with livestock, but the suggestions from the internet is as follows: Limit their exercise, have as much fresh water near their feeding areas. Sprinkle or mist the holding areas for the Livestock.

There are a lot of suggestions online for our pets and livestock. Check under Pets and Disasters.

It is very scary out there right now for most of us.

We all need to be ready for anything. In both of our vehicles we each have a couple of bags ready to go just in case. Both vehicles have his and my clothes, our medications, some food for us, and some water. We also each have food for the pets, leashes, doggy bags, dishes, etc. We have this in both cars just in case we are separated. As you never know what can happen.

Be safe everyone, be kind to others right now as we don't know what anyone is going through.

Since pre-history Storytelling has been an integral part of human expression in every culture across the world. From the 30,000 year old cave murals at Lascaux that depicted a history of rituals and hunting, to when the idea of fairy tales came out of France in the 17 th century and even to our modern storytelling such as comics or storyboarding for the big screen.

Storytelling has become a way of conveying events in words and images as a means of entertainment, education, cultural preservation and to instill moral values into future generations.

Almost all Storytelling has been conveyed through or accompanied by some form of art, from the illustrations in a children’s book of fairy tales, to the Bayeux Tapestry which tells the depicts the events leading up to the Norman conquest of England in an embroidered cloth nearly 70meters in length detailing a historic event.

We invite you to explore the expression of Storytelling in any of its many forms and share it through the gallery. This show is open to all forms of storytell-

ing from the written word, narrative illustrations, photography, true stories or fantasy.

Submissions are limited to three (3) pieces per artist and need to be delivered to the gallery with application form by August 30th.

Notes From the Lumby Public Market

This past Saturday August 14 2021, Lumby was extremely SMOKEY. During the day our Air Quality Rating had been classified at 281 which is 26 times higher than our regular rate of exposure from the smoke, making it very unhealthy to be out in. By 6:00 pm that same evening our Air Quality had jumped up to 405 which put Lumby under the classification as Hazardous!

With the Air Quality that day being so bad we would not be able to have our Market. So we went indoors.

We would like to thank the kind people that run the Lumby Curling Rink.

Myrna Alexander has allowed the Lumby and District Public market to be inside the Curling Rink for a few weeks if we need to.

If it were not for your generosity in letting us use the Curling Rink that day we would have not been able to have a Market So now if the weather is too hot for the market to be outdoors, or the Air Quality is so bad from all the smoke, and you don't see us at the Oval Park, check inside the Curling Rink instead.

At our Market this past Saturday inside the Curling Rink we had 17 Vendors, and we had 253 of you wonderful people coming through, staying and chatting without rushing home to get away from the heat or smoke.

A lot of you had commented how happy you were

that our market had moved inside that day because of all the smoke, otherwise you would have not come to the market that day at all.

As our market is usually an outdoor market we did have a couple of vendors that did not want to be indoors, which really none of us do. We also had Vendors that were more than happy to be inside on that horribly smokey day. By the end of the day they were smiling with their sales.

This year because of the extreme heat and the excessive smoke that is very unhealthy for anyone to be in, it has been recurring time and time again, we are grateful to be able to go inside only if needed, so that our Market can continue.

We thank each and everyone of you for supporting us, without you we would not be a market.

Our Famous Butter Tart Festival will be back again this September 11 2021? WOW! How exciting is that!

We are going to have so much fun, with a lot of different entertainment for young and older. If you want to buy the Butter Tarts you will need to get there pretty early as they usually sell out before 10:00 am.
