OAP Hall Assisting Edgewood/Fauquier Evacuees Hello Lumby, The Lumby OAP hall has set up a food and supplies station for any of the fire evacuees staying in our area. If you can help with supplies or time please let us know.

It looks like this will be an ongoing thing for the next week or two. Please advise when and how you can help.

Times are 8:30 am to 2:30 pm. 7 days a week at the OAP hall.

Hunger-Free Kids Summer Program and More!

By Melody Bosk What a wonderful variety of fruits for the kids this past week! We had BC Cherries, Blueberries, Grapes, Peaches, and a few bananas to top it off! For Veggies we were blessed with an abundance of fresh cucumbers and carrots from Zelaney Farms, and through our food recovery sources, we were able to add a fresh tomatoe and green pepper! Then we add a loaf of fresh IDA’s Bread as well as a variety of proteins, plus a little of this and a little of that. I think that it will keep a few bellies from rumbling this week!

Our small but helpful crew keeps everything running smoothly and organized for Friday pick-up days; I’d be lost without them...thank you gals and guy!

So if the kiddos are getting under your feet send them off to us Saturday Morning around 10:30, it’s our big day of organizing the food recovery boxes as they come off the truck. Sometimes it’s not a fun job, but the camaraderie is excellent and we make our own fun. It would also be great for a couple of seniors to come in and lend a hand going through the fruits and veggies we can even put the jukebox on if you like!

In new news of what’s happening at the food bank, it looks as if our president has decided to go ahead and get the driveway done. If all has gone well, you should have already witnessed some of the new concrete and pavement as it was put down, if it’s not in by the time you read this... it will be coming in soon!

Thank you too many of you that have admired our flowers that were lovingly completed by B&S Ranch, we really want to help our visitors and clients feel comfortable when they are here, it also totally reflects the beauty in our tiny community.

Which Is Faster, Heat Or Cold?... Heat, Because You Can Catch A Cold!

It was a very busy weekend at the market this last Saturday, this of course was greatly enhanced with the Car Show that was present. Lots of fine vehicles and people from far and wide, even some old friends I’ve not seen in years. The weather was pleasant and the smokey haze that had been quite thick earlier in the morning saw fit to disperse for the remainder of the day. Now, of course, we’re back in the smog and the temperature again has climbed up to the high end of the 30’s and will remain so for a few more days. This can be quite hard on not only people but to many of our garden plants. A gentleman noticed that the fruit on his Tomato plants did not seem to be setting. Earlier fruit was doing well and starting to ripen but the existing blossoms were not producing and I am certain that this is due to the heat. Temperatures of greater that 35 degrees for even a short period of time can cause significant harm to many plants such as cucumber, eggplant, green beans and even peppers who really do best in the heat, but our beloved Tomatoes do suffer greatly. Look at the leaves of your plants they

may have curled in ward, that is the plant’s response to moisture loss due to excessive heat, the leaves may also have a thickened, rubbery texture. Then there is the pollen that is also affected, the grains of pollen become fewer and less vital therefore the flowers do not get pollenated and they do not produce fruit. High temperatures for prolonged times can actually cause programmed cell death that can kill the entire plant, the roots are also greatly affected and do not develop well and the taste and sugar content in the fruit is also diminished, the plant will not grow as tall and even the existing fruit can crack. Remove the fruit from the plant as soon as it shows signs of ripening and let it finish ripening in the house, provide shade if you can using shade cloth or white cloth stretched between stakes to filter some of the hot sun in the afternoon, mulch the soil with straw and be sure to water extremely well ( 6 inches ) to keep the root system cool.

You should not fertilize at this point as it will only stress the plant further and do not over prune as this too can cause stress. Determinant varieties such as

the Roma seem to suffer less and the search is on for plants that are more tolerant to the heat as this may not be the last of our overly hot summers. The plants will hopefully survive this hot spell and will be more productive for the fall.

In 1929 electricity finally came to Lumby - thanks to the construction of the Wilsey Dam and generating station on the Shuswap River. In fact, between 1929 and 1951, the Wilsey Dam provided electric power for most of the North Okanagan. The dam was constructed at the site of the original 21 metre Shuswap Falls and was built by the West Canadian Hydro Electric Corporation. In this 1937 photo, notice the spillway that was blasted through solid rock. In 1942, a second dam was constructed at the outlet of Sugar Lake to create storage and increased generating potential.

Cellular Health and Longevity

When it comes to health and nutrition, many times we focus on visible, tangible results. How much weight and how many inches or centimeters can we lose? This is also could be more physical, as in how many reps can we bench or squat?

These visible milestones are great motivators and do contribute to our overall health. But these aren’t the end-all be-all indicators of health.

What’s happening on the inside is the most important and can help maintain our youthfulness and longevity. Cellular health is the key. If your cells feel good then you feel good! It’s comes down to things we most likely already know, and should be doing, but maybe we just don’t. Below are the 4 things we should be doing for our cellular health: 1. Maintain a Healthy Diet This can be a vague term, as most people think they know what constitutes a healthy diet. Fortunately, eating right for your cells is not that hard, we just need to do it. Eating on the lines of a Mediterranean Diet primarily whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, while avoiding high-sodium foods, sugars (especially processed sugars), processed foods and red meat is the best way for our cells.

There are 2 reasons to why this is - free radicals and antioxidants. Free radicals are substances that can damage and deteriorate cells. And antioxidants are the substances that protect the body from free radicals.

So how does the Mediterranean Diet type of eating come in? By eating all the foods that are mostly “avoided” as previously mentioned, there are less free radicals introduced into the body. But when this prevention isn’t optimal, then antioxidant support is the next big fighter for our cells as they counteract the free radicals. Fresh fruits and vegetables are excellent

sources of antioxidants. By eating plenty of produce, you can help maintain optimal cellular health.

2. Exercise Regularly—But include Cardio for good health Sometimes many avid body builder type gym-goers avoid cardio. But for cell health at least 30 minutes of cardio per day should be implemented. Whether it’s endurance from cycling or jogging, brisk walking to more of a HIT type training, would all qualify. If you can’t do daily not a worry, as even 3 days a week at 45 minutes will do the trick.

3. Don’t Underestimate Sleep This is so crucial! Many of us will sacrifice sleep at the expense of everything else. How much sleep is the “right” amount? We are told 8 hours, which is a good guideline but can vary person to person. 7-9 hours is a bit more accurate to cover most people. Basically, you should wake up feeling refreshed and not needing an alarm to get you out of bed.

If you consistently do not get the sleep you need, your cellular health will be directly impacted. This appears to be more apparent in men than women for aging cells prematurely. Practice Mindfulness Being stressed out is frustrating, exhausting, and, well yes, bad for our cells. But the effect of your mind on cellular health goes a step further. One study suggested that even a wandering mind towards negativity, anxiousness and defensiveness, had a negative

Lumby United Church Celebrates 125 Years: The Celebration

By Brenda Franklin & Donna Easto As noted last week, the first service in the Lumby Presbyterian (now the United) Church was held in 1895. Church goers were proud to raise their voices in song to the accompaniment of an ornately carved Pump Organ. Allen Dawe shared this wonderful memory, “My Aunt Lillian Dawe played the organ, it would often have hick-ups and we used to run up and kneel down then pump like crazy to carry is through the hymns.” The Organ was retired in 1985, but it still holds pride of place in the entrance to the sanctuary–an enduring reminder of the Church’s long musical history.

This is a column meant for fun and some information About myself: I am a Freelance Photographer you often see me on the side of the road or in various places taking photos of different things animals, birds, places, people etc. l have lived in Lumby just over 8 years,you have seen my photos in the newspaper (Lumby Valley Times) and once in awhile in the Vernon Morning Star, and the Lumby Art Gallery. Photography is my passion. Disclaimer: The information on some of my photos that I write about a lot of times come from the Internet or books I research them, hopefully the facts are as close to the truth as I can come.

Even The Small Things Are Great Saturday was a pretty busy day for all of us at the market, but it was a wonderful day.

At one point I got a cramp in my leg, it wasn't too harsh just enough to let me know it was there.

So it made me feel a little down, and at that point one of my vendors came up to me and handed me a clip board that he had made for me. It was awesome, and it made me forget about the cramp in my leg, it was a small gift, but it was great.

I had told you about this vendor before he and his partner Renee were vendor of the week just a little while ago.

Kodiak is his name, and he does beautiful creations on wood. One day when he was at the market he had a really cool little sign with a picture that he had put into wood, it looked like baby Yoda ( you know from the movies.) I loved it, but of course it sold pretty fast as it was so cute.

On my clipboard that Kodiak had surprised me with was my title of Colleen's Corner then a picture of the

baby Yoda, wow I just love it! It is Great Thank You Kodiak On Sunday we went to buy our water, walking past us was a man and his daughter. He stopped and chatted with us for a minute, his young daughter had a beautiful Sunflower in her hair. I told her how beautiful it was, she then gave me a lovely little red flower, for my hair ( I put it on the top of the clipboard to take a picture of it, for the column) I asked her what her name was, she said "Julie" I told her my name. Then her dad and Julie went on their way.

The flower the little girl gave me was a small surprise, but it made me feel good. Thank You Julie.

It just goes to show you how small things can be great.

They can give you feelings of happiness in a world that is full of stress right now, with all the fires, evacuations, smoke, etc.

And it reminds me to be grateful, for things I have and for those around me.

Evacuation Order Expanded for Mabel Lake Forest Service Road, with Additional Evacuation Alert Issued Based upon recommendation from the BC Wildfire Service, the Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) has extended the state of local emergency, and has expanded the Evacuation Order currently in place due to the Bunting Road wildfire on the east side of Mabel Lake (#K41561). In addition to expanding the current Evacuation Order, the RDNO has issued an Evacuation Alert for the area as well.

EVACUATION ORDER Members of the local police department and other applicable agencies will be expediting the Evacuation Order. The RDNO does not expect that the Evacuation Order will be lifted in the short term, and evacuees will not have access to their houses while the order is in place, therefore bring your pets and important items with you. See Evacuation Order/Alert area map attached.

Because of the immediate danger to life safety, the Evacuation Order includes the following areas: ORIGINAL AREA - 10,000 block -17,000 block of Mabel Lake Forest Service Road, aka Lumby Mabel Lake Road, including properties known as Cottonwoods.

NEW AREA – 6,000 block – 17,000 block of Mabel Lake Forest Service Road, aka Lumby Mabel Lake Road, including Cottonwoods and Cascade Beach Recreation Site.

IF YOU ARE IN THIS AREA, YOU MUST LEAVE THE AREA IMMEDIATELY. WHAT YOU SHOULD DO: • Shut off all gas and electrical appliances, other than refrigerators and freezers.

• Close all windows and doors.

• Close gates (latch) - but do not lock.

• Take critical items (medicine, purse, wallet, and keys) only if they are immediately available. Take pets in pet kennels or on leash.

• Gather your family and, if you have room, take a neighbour or someone needing transportation. Do not use more vehicles then you have to.

It then came to be known, as it is today, Lumby United Church.

There are few records about the years from 1896 to 1912. We do know the names of managers, and the first titles of board members, many of whom still have descendants living in Lumby today.

In the early 60’s the wooden roof was replaced and a creative and skilled Church goer handcrafted a beautiful wooden Cross from some of the original wood. The Cross is a true work of art and hangs above the pulpit in the sanctuary.

In 2002, the congregation dedicated original stained glass panels created in remembrance of family members. These panels still grace the windows to this day. The artist, Jeanette Romeril, was married to the Minister. If you haven’t noticed them, they’ll be a highlight of your tour on August 7th. Christmas cards were created featuring these lovely images, and there are still a few available for sale.

When the pews were beginning to show their age, the congregation painted them and the sanctuary a calming shade of plum. The colour aged well and always leaves an indelible impression on visitors.

While reading through church history notes, we frequently see the names of volunteers and members repeated. Many of them not only worked for

At Christmas we invite everyone in the area to join us in collecting new warm underwear and socks to be delivered to the food bank for distribution to anyone in need. We would like to send a special note of thanks to the Lumby I.D.A. Pharmacy, Fields, and Sisters Restaurant for their wonderful contributions last year.

On August 7th, 2021, the little white church on the hill, with windows sparkling and doors wide, invites you share in its 125th anniversary celebration.

The celebration will start at 1 p.m. with a short tour, followed by a cup of fresh-brewed coffee and a piece of delicious anniversary cake. It’s a great opportunity to get together with old friends and new. Notes From the Lumby Public Market Did you go to the car show this weekend? I have been to a lot of Car Shows in Lumby, but this was the largest one I have ever seen here. I didn't get to walk around the car show much but I did take a minute or so to check it out, as the Market was extremely busy. We had 30 vendors, and about 893 people came through.

It was amazing! It would be great to have some kind of show like that every couple of weeks.

Speaking of shows, did you hear that our Famous Butter Tart Festival will be back again this September 11 2021? WOW! How exciting is that!

We are going to have so much fun, with a lot of different entertainment for young and older. Vanilla: Pure Extract Or Vanillin?

Who doesn’t love vanilla, it’s one of our most popular flavours. The majority of the world's pure vanilla comes from V. planifolia (an orchid species), more commonly known as Bourbon vanilla or Madagascar. This vanilla produced in Madagascar and Indonesia represents two-thirds of the world's supply of vanilla. However, overall production of natural vanilla worldwide is tiny. Not surprisingly the cost of pure vanilla has skyrocketed as global demand for vanilla beans far outstrips production, leading to the creation of numerous artificial or imitation vanilla products. To replicate the taste of real vanilla, companies synthesized vanillin, the main flavour component of cured vanilla beans,

Undoubtedly, the best vanilla extract is pure vanilla made only from natural vanilla beans, water, alcohol and free from colourings, preservatives or other additives (it is possible to get alcohol-free vanilla, made with organic glycerin, water, and extractives of organic vanilla beans). There are strict regulations for what may be named pure vanilla extract. Vanillin, on the other hand, is not as strictly regulated as long as brands label their foods with "artificial" or "imitation" vanilla. Most imitation vanilla extracts are a weak solution of naturally dried (from lignin or wood pulp) or artificially derived (synthesized in a lab) vanillin.

If cost is a consideration, it doesn’t have to be all or nothing. When choosing pure or imitation, there are certain guidelines. “Used in oven-baked goods, such as cakes and cookies, it's almost impossible to taste the difference between the flavor of items prepared with imitation vanilla or pure vanilla extract.

Basically, for baked goods, imitation vanilla flavor will be fine. In low-heat sweets, such as puddings, pastry creams, and icings, the taste difference is more noticeable. For best results use pure vanilla extract (or paste) for no-bake treats, simmered sauces. custards, and frozen desserts.”1

Vanilla Orange Cider

INGREDIENTS • 8 cups apple cider or juice • ¼ cup packed brown sugar • ¼ cup thawed organge juice • 1/8 teaspon salt • 3 cinnamon sticks • 1 teaspoon whole cloves • ¼ teaspoon pure vanilla extract • orange slices for serving Directions: 1. In a large saucepan, combine apple cider, brown sugar, organge juice and salt. Tie cinnamon sticks and cloves in a double thickenss of cheesecloth with ends gathered together and secured with string. Add to pan.

2. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat, simmer covered for 1 hour to blend flavours. Discard spice bag. Stir in vanilla. Serve with organge slices.

HINT: Vanilla isn’t just for the kitchen. Use it to freshen potpourri or remove odours from microwaves, fridges and coolers. Add a little bit of vanilla to paint to minimize the smell, and you can even keep insects away by mixing a teaspoon of pure vanilla with 1 cup of water and spraying it on your skin (bugs hate the scent).

In Loving Memory Dorothy Eleanor

Hunt 1937 – 2021

Dorothy Eleanor Hunt (nee Dilts) was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She left us on July 15, 2021 at the North Okanagan Hospice House.

Dorothy was born on April 30th, 1937, to Ralph and Nettie Dilts in Fernie B.C. She was one of five children. The Dilts family moved to Vernon B.C. As a young girl, the Vernon Girls Trumpet Band was one of Dorothy’s favorite memories. In fact, she was one of its first members.

Dorothy Dilts and Alan Hunt were married on February 26, 1955 in the Elks Hall in Vernon. They had four children: Darrel, Dixie, Terrie, and Steven. In 1971, after living 9 years in Calgary, Alberta, Dorothy, Alan, and their children moved back to Lumby B.C. Dorothy was well known for her seamstress talents, her cooking abilities, and her love of family. Over the years, she was a cook in many of the restaurants in Lumby. In her home, the coffee pot was always on with something fantastic to eat. The family enjoyed being a part of the Vernon Pigeon and Poultry Club for many years. In her later years, Dorothy was finally able to take time for her passion for horses. In doing so, an amazing group of ladies was formed called the Galloping Grannies who continued to meet long after the horseback riding has stopped. She also cherished her time as a member of the Lumby Christian Church.

Dorothy was always proud to tell everyone that she was blessed with eleven grandchildren, and fourteen great grandchildren.

The family would like to thank the remarkable care aids and nurses that came to her home and the North Okanagan Hospice House for their genuine care and compassion.

A celebration of life will be held at the Lumby Christian Church on Saturday, July 24, 2021 at 1:00 pm. The family would like to invite everyone to stay for tea and coffee afterwards. Donations can be made in her honor to the North Okanagan Hospice House.

Artbeat Arts & Culture from the Edge

Home Arts The Monashee Arts Council is excited to invite the public to our upcoming show ‘Home Arts’ which will be running from August 2nd to 28th. Join us in delving into the wonders of the applied arts.

The lockdowns of the previous year have busied us with finding new ways of keeping ourselves busy thus allowing many to either hone skills they already possessed in a craft or for some explore new ones. MAC has invited these artisans to show their usable arts.

From weaving, felting, quilting, pottery and jewelry making to wood working, and metal ‘Home Arts’ or applied arts, applies to hand crafted works that serve a functional purpose in addition to being attractive.

Historically the applied arts were created at home to beautify the home, often (but not exclusively by any means) they were done by women. Consequently

they were usually excluded from galleries and exhibitions for much of European art history.

Times have changed. Exposure to other cultures broke that artificial separation wide open. Now major galleries world wide show pottery, quilting, wood working, furniture making and so on.

Be sure to come down and find the various ways Artist add beauty to our everyday lives.

Village Gallery is located at 1975 Vernon St. (Hwy.6), and open Monday-Saturday from 10am to 4pm.

MAC will also be sponsering three demonstrations featuring fibre arts of the Monashee Weavers at the Arbor park gazebo on August 7th, 21st and 29th be sure to join us in this amazing learning experience.
