EVACUATION ORDER ISSUED FOR 10,000-17,000 BLOCKS OF MABEL LAKE FOREST SERVICE ROAD, INCLUDING PROPERTIES KNOWN AS COTTONWOODS As of July 21, 2021 - Based upon the recommendation from the BC Wildfire Service, the Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) has declared a state of local emergency an Evacuation ORDER has been issued by Regional District North Okanagan (RDNO) at the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) due to the Bunting Road wildfire on the east side of Mabel Lake (#K41561).

Members of the local police department and other applicable agencies will be expediting this action. The RDNO does not expect that the Evacuation ORDER will be lifted in the short term, and evacuees will not have access to their houses while the order is in place, therefore bring your pets and important items with you.

I don't understand this policy.

The local supermarket Freshmart is denying customers the right to bring in their own shopping bags.

When we questioned the manager about it, he was evasive and didn't seem to have any good answers. He did say that "the bags that some people bring in are filthy", which says to me that the cashiers may not want to touch them and I don't blame them. However, my response to that is put out a 'bag your own grocery' policy , or have your staff wear vinyl gloves.

Maybe you could put out a sign that says we can refuse to use your bag if it's not clean. We were also told by the store manager that they were having meetings on this subject. They were still deciding.

It seems ridiculous to me that in a small town such as Lumby, where we are trying to be so recycle conscious, the main grocery store is not. I think the policy needs to change.

Local & Regional News New Outdoor Water Restrictions For The Mabel Lake Water System

The Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) is implementing a trial schedule for water restrictions for the Mabel Lake Water Utility (MLW). These restrictions will allow residents to water with sprinklers according to a schedule. When too many people use water from the same system at once, it can exceed the capacity of the distribution pumps, which can result in a water shortage in our tanks and water quality issues.

What Do You Call A Raspberry That Uses Foul Language?... Berry Rude!

It was an unfortunate turn of events to have cancelled the Lumby & District Public Market this last Saturday. Between the smoke and the heat to many of us were unable to attend and we were concerned too that it was not the best of times for our clients to attend. We will be back in full force this coming Saturday and I will still be holding an International Geranium Day! I have had so many people tell me of their unfortunate and total loss of their Raspberry crops.

It seems with the intense heat that many have found their canes frazzled to almost death. I suggest that you keep watering them deeply as next years canes will still emerge from the ground if some maintenance is provided. I would not cut back the canes that should have bore fruit this summer until this fall. Hopefully this is a one shot loss and that the plant itself will survive. They are extremely hardy. Mine have survived quite well although I find that some of the berries are smaller and they are ripening with alarming speed. A few more picks over the next week or so will find that this years crop will have come to an end. The berries are still sweet and the plants seem very hardy.

I count myself fortunate! Raspberries like full sun that being a minimum of 6 to 8 hours a day, the soil should be rich with compost and well draining, they enjoy a good deep watering over the summer months. They should not be planted where tomatoes, peppers, eggplant or other members of the nightshade plants were formally planted. These plants can arbor ver-

ticillium wilt which can affect the plants. I mulch mine heavily in fall with compost and then leaves and have yet to fertilize the plants with anything. Do not spray with anything! Raspberries are a delicate fruit and only should be rinsed quickly before consumption if at all. They last only 4 to 5 days after harvest and should be eaten or frozen for future use within this time frame. Raspberries are high in Antioxidants and Vitamins and are also a good source of fibre. I have recently been informed of the value of coffee grounds for the Raspberry plants as well as Epsom salts which I firmly believe in for all plants, indoor and out.

A young woman stopped by my greenhouse the other day and as I was showing her around I pointed out some Elderberry bushes that I have been eating from as the berries became ripe. She so kindly informed me that raw Elderberries can cause some symptoms of which I have been complaining of over the last little while including dizziness and nausea, this I attributed to too much sun and heat although I have avoided that carefully. Elderberry is wonderful once cook as in Jams, Pies and Teas but should not be consumed raw and has been known to be fatal when eaten leaves roots and all by cattle, sheep and pigs. Well there you go I won’t be doing that again!

Stage 2 Water Restrictions for Greater Vernon

Stage 2 Water Use Restrictions are now in effect for Greater Vernon Water (GVW) customers. These restrictions apply to properties that are connected to GVW within the: • City of Vernon • District of Coldstream • Portions of Electoral Areas ‘B’, ‘C’, and ‘D’ • Portions of Spallumcheen Exceptionally dry and hot conditions are forecasted to continue, further limiting supplies already stressed due to the lowest June rainfall recorded by the utility. Under the GVW Water Shortage Management Plan, these restrictions are necessary to protect water supplies.

We are aware of the impact this will have on customers. In addition to wa-

ter restrictions, GVW will continue operational conservation actions initiated in June. Working together, we can get through this hot weather and maintain water for our community’s needs, for agriculture, for fish, and fighting wildfires.

Under Stage 2, all customers must reduce water use by 20%. This can be achieved by watering one day less a week or by cutting back your sprinkler timer by 20%. Most lawns only need water once per week to remain healthy. Take this time to inspect, adjust & reduce your automatic irrigation timing if you have it.

This is a column meant for fun and some information About myself: I am a Freelance Photographer you often see me on the side of the road or in various places taking photos of different things animals, birds, places, people etc. l have lived in Lumby just over 8 years,you have seen my photos in the newspaper (Lumby Valley Times) and once in awhile in the Vernon Morning Star, and the Lumby Art Gallery. Photography is my passion. Disclaimer: The information on some of my photos that I write about a lot of times come from the Internet or books I research them, hopefully the facts are as close to the truth as I can come.

They're Back! Hooray!

While in my yard yesterdayI heard a flutter, I looked up in the tree and there it was a beautiful little Cedar Waxwing. I heard another flutter and yup, there were two of them.

They are such a cool looking bird that they were even voted "Bird of the Year" for 2020 I know I have written about them before, but I thought I would give you a refresher as I was so excited when I saw them.

Cedar Waxwings, boy how they love fruit! Good thing they come to the Okanagan with all the fruit we have here.

Did you know that you might see some Cedar Waxwings with an orange tip on their tail instead of yellow?

This happens when eating a red pigment that had been picked up from berries of a certain Honeysuckle plant.

new tail feathers are growing the tip of the feather could be orange, instead of yellow, I think that is pretty cool.

The Cedar Waxwing can survive just by eating fruit, for quite a few months, but if another bird species had dropped their eggs off in the Waxwings nest like a Brown Headed CowBird for instance, that little bird would not live.

Here is a problem that the beautiful Waxwings run into, sometimes they eat too much fruit, that they can become intoxicated and seem drunk, and unfortunately if the berries are overripe and fermented, they produce alcohol which can kill these little birds.

In 5 or 6 days the Female has a nest ready to go. It will probably take her about 2,500 -2,800 trips back and forth to gather and place the things she needs for her nest. Sometimes the female will just take gatherings from other nests that belong to birds like the Eastren King-

bird, Robins, Warblers, etc. this helps to save her time and energy.

In 2008 a Cedar Waxwing had been banded in Maryland. When he was re-captured then re-released in Maryland he was 7 years and one month old.

Call for Artisans The Monashee Arts Council invites artists who focus on applied arts as their chosen means of expression to participate in our upcoming August show ‘Home Arts’.

We believe many people have amused themselves and kept themselves busy with applied arts during the lockdowns of the previous year, either honing their craft or exploring a new one. Show us what you have been up to!

Are you a potter, a weaver, a jeweller, a felter, a quilter? Do you knit, crochet, or embroider garments? Is there anyone out there who still tats or does macramé?

Perhaps you work in wood or clay, metal or pine needles or willow withies. If your work serves a functional purpose in addition to being attractive, it is considered an applied art.

Historically the applied arts were created at home to beautify the home, often (but not exclusively by any means) they were done by women. Consequently they were usually excluded from galleries and exhibitions for much of European art history.

Times have changed. Exposure to other cultures broke that artificial separation wide open. Now major galleries will show pottery, quilting, wood working, furniture making and so on.

The Village Gallery (home of the Monashee Arts Council) invites you to enter your work in our August show: ‘HOME ARTS’. Membership in MAC is not required. Deadline for applications is July 30th.

Submissions are limited to three (3) pieces per artist and need to be delivered to the gallery with application form are available from the Village Gallery at 1975 Vernon St. (Hwy.6), open Monday-Saturday 10am-4pm.

MAC will need the following information for each piece of work: Title, Medium, Size, Price (if selling), Description (how, why, when or where), Name of Artist.

(Please note that the Monashee Arts Council will receive 20% commission on any art sold during this show.)

The Monashee Weavers will be giving demonstrations on August 7th, 21st and 28th in conjunction with this show, location to be announced.

Lumby Food Bank Receives A $45,000 Infrastructure Grant!

By Melody Bosk First I’d like to start off with a short mention of what’s happening with the Hunger-Free Kids Summer project, and then we will tread the wavy waters of how to survive after receiving a grant.

Before all else I’d like to thank the family/crew at the Food Bank for coming together during a stressful hamper week when we were suddenly left shorthanded- just while I was preparing to go on a summer trip to Manitoba! This group was amazing, and we pulled in my two kiddos near the end to help with clean upthanks to all of you, Robert and I would be lost without our little Food Bank family! Some of us may be old and decrepit, but we stick together through thick and thin!

We’ve had no new additions to our summer program, and while I realize that we would expect families and children who need support to reach out to us if it was required, I’m concerned that some of them just don’t realize how easy it is to access our services or maybe intimidated or nervous about reaching out. I’d like to guarantee you once again that your information is kept private and is in no way reported to any agency.

This past week the kids received an amazing variety of foods including Produce, Vegetables, Dairy, lunch meat, bread, margarine, salmon, canned pasta, and cauliflower pasta, these easy meals help kids to be self-reliant. When older children are registered they receive additional “Meal” type of products and instructions. Packages are filled with items that are appropriate for age.

At this time we are fully loaded with everything a child would need over the summer months thanks to a few awesome people and businesses’ including Zelaney Farms, and a generous lady who has continually reached out to us- you are awesome Cheyenne! Thank you to all!

The Peaks and Valleys of Grants Now I’d like to get down to brass tacks and give you some information on the infrastructure grant that was received for $45,000. If you recall I mentioned in my last update that I would explain a little more after a lady phoned the food bank and spoke with a volunteer and then proceeded to call our President on his cell phone and yell at him that this money should be going towards food for the kids and not pavement. I will try to explain the best I can. We are always happy to answer questions and had this woman asked and listened to an explanation instead of being angry and hanging up I’m certain she would have understood… and now without further ado let me explain as simply as I can.

Wal-Mart often sponsors grants; BC Food Banks were invited to submit a grant request. The terms of

the grant if accepted are pre-determined so when a Food Bank has been accepted the terms and conditions must be followed. Our Food Bank applied for and received this infrastructure grant which was specified strictly for INFRASTRUCTURE- not food, not bills, not supplies.

We applied for this grant to purchase a large refrigerated container to store more products that become available through the Food Recovery Program. Our President knows that as our community grows that the demand for the Food Bank will also grow, it’s important that we recognize and deal with this when we have the option. Not doing this would be negligent on our part!

Eureka! We’ve got the grant and now comes the tricky part, for this refrigerated system to be installed in the back of the Food Bank the parking lot needs to be fixed. This includes pulling up and removing all concrete and preparing it for new pavement. At this time there is no grant approval for this; our president took on this financial endeavor hoping that a grant can be found soon. Yet due to the deadline of the grant things had to start taking place and soon.

Let’s take a look…It will take a year to have a contractor available to begin the process. With these large endeavors, contractors need to book many months ahead. So the process is this… the plan to move forward on a new infrastructure project takes place, contractors are asked to come and provide an estimate on the work needed. This in itself can be difficult as the summer months are booked long in advance and the contractor is now knee-deep into his own project. He arrives when he has time and then provides an estimate a week later, this is needed to apply for the grant, the application is now available and must be applied for by the due date… everything is on a timeline… including the time a grant needs to be used by. This is where it gets tricky. Because of the need to have everything in place to apply for the grant, the information needs to be gathered a year before…Then the rush is on to secure these contractors (which is now a year later after the initial estimate).

It’s a tricky two-step to have everything organized and prepared to come together once the application

has been approved. Okay, so now we’ve been approved it’s time to rock ’n roll… or so you would think! Now you have to find out if those contractors will be available. Will the cost be the same? Will they be able to get it done before the deadline on the approval?

Now in our case, we received the approval and grant for the refrigerated container… Next, we sought out contractors to begin the parking lot and provide estimates… then became the challenge of finding another grant to apply for to hire the contractors… A grant was found and applied for to take care of the parking lot, sadly we were not accepted. So a new search for grants must ensure… meanwhile the timeline for the grant we had received for $45,000 is quickly coming due in September, if it hasn’t been used for what it was issued for then the grant must be returned.

For us to begin the process of having this new container we need to get the parking lot completed. And with the future in mind, our president hired and paid for a contractor that had some available time this year with his own money in hopes that another grant would come along soon that would be able to compensate. Yet now without the pavement being completed and no available funds to finish the parking lot, we may not even have a refrigerated container. IF the parking lot isn’t complete and the container put in, the $45.000 needs to be returned!

I understand that many of you may not know all the steps that need to be taken during the grant process, but we just need you to trust us. Our door is open to all, come ask questions, look around, and don’t be afraid to voice a concern—nicely!

By Donna Easto Lumby United church had its beginnings as a Presbyterian church. The Reverend George A. Wilson, Minister for Vernon and the Caledonian Valley, first held worship services at the home of Mr. Joseph G. Nesbitt. The trip to Lumby took five hours. After church there were often social events and the Minister did not get on the road till after midnight. Fortunately, the horse knew its way home! I wonder if it managed to avoid the potholes in the dark, or if that’s what kept the good Reverend awake.

The first service in the Lumby Presbyterian (now the United) Church was conducted April 7, 1895

by Reverend. George A. Wilson. The congregation included not only Presbyterian but also Baptist,

Methodist and Church of England adherents. The humble little Church officially opened on August 1, 1896.

In those days, the question of providing fodder for the minister’s horse posed a problem. It was a sum the struggling young congregation could not afford.

Reverend Wilson was asked to write His Excellency, the Governor requesting a portion of the fodder, or a suitable donation. In reply, Reverend Wilson was granted the sum of $10.00 as a first payment toward the keep of his horse.

Notes From the Lumby Public Market The Market had been closed this Saturday due to a special air quality statement that had gone out in the later evening of Friday July 16 2021, it had also been closed down due to the fact that parts of Mable Lake Road was under an Evacuation Alert also on Friday night. Yet by the time Saturday rolled around the air quality was fine, and it wasn't too hot, but by then it was too late to open the market.

Sorry for any inconvenience the closure caused the vendors and the patrons.

We will be reopening again Saturday July 24 2021.

Please Note that the directors of the Lumby and District Public Market have agreed that because this year is hotter than usual, with a lot of fires , if the air quality is bad, and the the weather stations, and or the news channels advise people not to go outside the market will be closed for the day. If the temperature is 35 degrees celsius or above the market will be closed for the day. This helps to protect our vendors from getting Heat or Sun Stroke, as they are out in the sun for four or five hours.

Lovin’ Lemon

Lemon is a timeless taste favourite. Lemon desserts, especially lemon custard was popular in the Renaissance, a period of time when sugar was routinely sprinkled on food, and the shortbread crust had just been created. These days we find it in savory dishes, cheesecakes, custards, candies, cakes, and pies. There aren’t many who can resist a luscious lemon meringue pie.

During the summer we enjoy lemonade, lemon flavoured goodies and even lemon flavoured vodka.

Friends from India tell me it’s an effective hangover cure. Just boil one cup of water, add honey and lemon juice to taste. Apparently, this hot toddy works to treat a hangover and you can enjoy it several times a day to replenish fluids and sugar lost in your moment of excess. It’s also a great addition to plain water because it’s high in vitamin C, a primary antioxidant that helps protect cells from free radicals.

The following recipe is modern, but if you’re feeling adventurous, I’ve also included a cheesecake recipe from the Canadian Home Cook Book of 1877.

Lemon Coffee Cake INGREDIENTS: • 1 lemon pie filling • ½ cup butter softened • 1 cup sour cream • 1 cup sugar • 2 eggs • 1 tsp Pure Vanilla Extract • ½ tsp baking soda • 2 cups all-purpose flour • 1 ½ tsp baking powder

Visit places with air conditioning, such as shopping malls, community centres, swimming pools, public libraries, etc., as they often have cleaner, cooler air than smaller buildings or the outdoors, while following COVID-19 guidance for those communal spaces.

For those who require rescue medications, especially for respiratory conditions like asthma, ensure you have sufficient supplies on hand for when conditions are smoky.

• ½ tsp salt • ½ cup all purpose flour • ½ cup sugar • ¼ cup cold butter • 1 tsp Pure Ground Cinnamon • ½ cup chopped nuts DIRECTIONS: 1. Prepare lemon pie filling according to recipe.

Cool.

2. Combine next 6 ingredients in a bowl.

3. Sift together 2 cups of flour, baking powder and salt; stir into vanilla mixture. Spread half the dough in a greased and floured 13x9 inch pan; spread lemon pie filling over dough. Top with remaining dough.

4. Mix the last 5 ingredients until mixture resembles crumbs. Sprinkle cake with crumb mixture.

Bake at 350F for 45 minutes or until golden brown. Cool or chill.

HINT: When you purchase extracts for flavouring, look for the easy recipes usually found on the box.

Lemon Cheese Cake (1877)

Break one pound of loaf sugar into small lumps, put to it one-quarter pound of butter, the yolks of six eggs with the whites of four, the juice of three lemons, and the peel of two grated; put these into a pan, let them simmer over a slow fire until the sugar is dissolved; continue to stir it gently one way while it is on the fire, or it will curdle; keep it in a jar like mince meat; let it simmer till it begins to thicken, or looks like honey.

OBITUARIES Daniel Bruce

Carey

With heartfelt sadness we share that Daniel Bruce Carey passed away peacefully on April 19th, 2021.

Bruce lived a fulfilling life, married 49 years to Debbie, raising 4 children, more recently playing with his 9 grandchildren.

He loved his whole family and was very proud of them.

Bruce started house painting as a young man before becoming a machinist at CAE Vancouver. He worked a small hobby farm in Aldergrove for 26 years where he also ran a small engine repair business.

He and Debbie moved to Lumby in 1999 where they continued to farm sheep and cattle, while Bruce established a reputable home renovations business.

Bruce enjoyed hunting, fishing, kayaking and watching all sports. He loved getting together with family and friends playing notes on his beer can while singing around a campfire or playing table games, his favourite “Dice 10,000.”

Bruce’s calm, gentle nature will be remembered forever by all those spent time in his presence.

A service will be held at SACRED HEART CHURCH, 2202 Park Ave, Lumby at 10am August 7th, 2021.

The Government of British Columbia has declared varying levels of drought in the wider Okanagan and South Thompson watersheds. Provincial drought levels often differ from water utility restrictions stages, as the stages depend on the utility’s ability to provide water from storage or operational limitations like a power failure, unlike the provincial levels based on natural stream flows not fed by reservoirs of stored water. Greater Vernon Water is in close contact with the province on how our reservoirs are helping supply water to the local streams that would otherwise be dry.
