Local & Regional News Hunger Free Summer For Kids We’re ready to Rock’N Roll !

Thank you immensely to those of you who have contributed to our “Hungry Kitty” of kids! Your donations have allowed us to begin this well needed project for the kids in our community.

As promised the registration forms went out to all the cooperating services and schools last week, as well I was able to have a very special previous dignitary, our one and only ever designated parade “Penny Marshall”, Owen Sanders, who helped out in delivering registration forms to several businesses around town.

Going from business to business Owen delivered as many as we had in hand, and secured a few other places that indicated a donation may come our way! Way to go Owen-and thank you for taking care of all your school-mates!

Registration forms can be found at most family type businesses around town, and delivered back to Whitevalley Community Resource Centre, The Lumby Food Bank and The Lumby Thrift Shop.

Folks can also register over the phone at the Food Bank and Whitevalley Community Centre.

Please, if you see or know of a child that is in need of additional food over the summer months, please send them our way! Of course the Food Bank is always available to any family that is in need and we hand out on a weekly basis-but we need to ensure that every child knows we are there to help.

We are planning on having this summer relief food

available on Fridays beginning on July 9, however the day of the week may change, but all of our registered clients will be notified in this case.

WorkSafeBC Advising Employers To Consider Workplace Closures During Heat Wave

Controls need to be in place to protect workers from heat stress With extreme temperatures in many parts of British Columbia, WorkSafeBC is advising employers to consider closing down their workplaces if workers cannot be protected from the risk of heat stress.

“All workers are potentially at risk,” said Al Johnson, Head of Prevention Services at WorkSafeBC. “With the heatwave across B.C., we are warning employers and workers about the risk of developing heat

stress. If not recognized and treated early, heat stress can lead to heat exhaustion and heat stroke.”

Symptoms of heat exhaustion include excess sweating, dizziness, fainting and muscle cramps. Symptoms of heat stroke include cessation of sweating, an increased breathing rate, confusion, seizures and even cardiac arrest.

To prevent heat-stress injuries, WorkSafeBC requires employers to conduct heat stress assessments.

As appropriate, employers must have a heat stress mitigation plan that provides education and training in recognizing the symptoms of heat stress and heat stroke.

“If an employer cannot be assured that workers will be protected against heat stress, they should seriously consider shutting down their workplace during this extreme heat,” said Johnson.

In the last three years, there have been almost 100 accepted claims for work-related injuries caused by heat stress — and these are preventable injuries.

The Most Obnoxious Thing In The World Is To Listen To Others Drone On About How Much They Love The Heat!

The Heat Dome I hope you have all managed to cope with this spate of extreme hot weather if you think it is hot outside you should have a greenhouse to make you really appreciate the break down of this Heat Dome. This all has come about do to a strong ridge of high pressure that traps hot air under it and it is a rare occurrence for our area. They normally occur in July or August and usually much further south of us. The last significant heat wave for BC was in July of 2009 and it set record temperatures that will be broken during this wave and also resulted in several fatalities. The

temperatures have been 14 to 16 degrees higher than normal. This high pressure ridge is do to break down later this week, unfortunately the Heat Dome event is usually followed by Thunder Storms as there is significant built up energy. This is cause to worry as with the dry spring and the vast amount of water evaporation in our forest lands this could be a significant fire hazard. This heat can cause significant health issues especially for infants, the elderly and people with other health issues, it is hard on our forests and

the evaporation of water from streams and rivers and the increase in water temperature can be deadly for fish, massive and rapid snow melt from higher in the mountains is causing flooding problems in some areas. One should reduce the amount of time spent out in this heat, reduce physical activities and be sure to drink not only just water but drinks that can help replace the electrolytes that are lost when one gets dehydrated. Watch for the signs of heat stroke such as dizziness, confusion, nausea, muscle cramps, loss of consciousness, and seizures. If the first symptoms occur get the person out of the sun and reduce the body temperature with cool water and encourage them to drink water. If the signs are more significant one should call 911 as extreme heat stoke can kill.

This Heat Dome also causes significant stress on our plants. I was shocked to see that even the weeds are wilting. This is not the time to put new bedding plants out as it will be significantly harder on them. Do hots water the plants during the day as the water will burn the leaves. Water very early morning or evening and water deeply. The plants may look weak and be wilting due to the heat not the lack of water. They will perk up in the evening with the cooler temperatures.

My apologies for my absence at the market but with the extreme heat I cannot be away from the greenhouse for any length of time as some emergency watering is required. A little for the plant and a splash for me too. I doubt that I will attend the market this coming week as well but look forward to being back once this Dome has Departed! Stay safe and stay cool.

Healthy Camping Tips

Camping is great way to get out and enjoy the outdoors, as it is good to get in touch with nature and get away from it all. No phones, computers, TV’s or notepads, at least hopefully for the most part, helps us slow down and ground us. Reading, fishing, swimming, kayaking, canoeing, paddle boarding, time with family…whatever it may be, are all part of the experience. Although this “get away from it all,” attitude can reflect into the foods we choose to eat. Snacking and meals can go the wayside with lots of chips, cookies, hot dogs, hamburgers and other highly saturated fatty, salty, and sugary foods as well as drinks. To enjoy camping and still eat half decent, here are a few tips.

Planning: Plan out meal and snack before you go, aim for a balance between meals that require cooking and nocook meals. No-cook lunches and snacks are great and can save camp stove fuel and prep time.

Easy Snacks: • Whole wheat crackers topped with low fat cheese or any natural nut butter and sliced banana.

• Nuts, seeds and dried fruit mixes.

• Homemade popcorn.

• Fresh fruit whole like peaches, apples or chopped fruit like melons.

• Chopped veggies with low calorie ranch dip, hummus or tzatziki • Whole grain granola bars or fruit and nut bars.

• Snap peas

Meals: • Plan for some one-pot meals like chili or rice pilaf, easy to prep and serve along 1 Ton Dump Truck • Backhoe, with little clean up.

There are even ways to make this favourite a little healthier with still including the main ingredient, the marshmallow. Substitute milk chocolate for 70% or higher dark chocolate and forego the graham cracker by inserting the dark chocolate into the marshmallow. Still tastes great and is a fun favourite over the fire snack.

Hopefully as mentioned in the beginning there will be some form of exercise. But if just going to relax by fishing or reading, it is still great to try get in some form of exercise. Just simply going for an early morning brisk walk or afternoon stroll, can further help ground us, reduce stress from regular life, improve sleep and change mindset as you take in the peace and tranquility of nature around you. It is like a reset for your body.

Decluttering

What does this mean? Does it sound overwhelming?

Decluttering means: a common organizational practice to remove clutter from a room, an area, etc..

These words are becoming more common as we age; we feel we need to change something in our lives to make it easier. Decluttering is a quick and easy solution as you start small. For example: You can clear a counter or table of paper. Or you can pick a room to organize and remove items you no longer use. Delegating it to a certain place or recycling it, if it’s not required.

But..where do you start? It can be refreshing and relaxing to have a tidy, neater space. Visualize the space you’re working on. Start decluttering by taking 5 minutes to clean a counter in the kitchen, or a shelf (1 shelf), a drawer or a closet. If you touch it, deal with it. Delegate a new place for it or dispose of it.

Ask yourself this question. When did you last use it?

Is it useful, how many times have you used it in the last 6 months? Papers have a way of building up. Put all newspapers, magazines or books in one place. Put

your mail or bills in one place. Use this place regularly and ensure family members know where to put it as well. Review the pile regularly and recycle what you have read or dealt with. If you haven’t read the newspaper in a week, or the monthly magazine subscriptions, then share, donate or recycle it. Does the kitchen counter have too many appliances on it? Can it be put in a cupboard if you don’t use it daily? Another way to declutter is to pick 5 things up and find a home for it them. These should be things that you actually use, but that you just seem to put anywhere, because they don’t have good places. Stop & take a couple of minutes to think of a good place to put it them. In your clothes closet, keep only that seasons clothes there and put the other season’s clothes in a box. When did you last wear that sweater? Does it fit? Is it in good repair? Do you like the style, cut or even color? If not, donate it. Unworn clothes just take up space and someone else may be able to wear it and enjoy the piece. Clear out your medicine cabinet.

If you don’t have one spot for medicines, create one now. Go through everything for the outdated medicines, the stuff you’ll never use again, the dirty-looking bandages, makeup, the creams or ointments that you’ve found you’re allergic to, or even outdated. Yes, even makeup, creams & ointments become outdated!

These are just a few ways to declutter. Try to do this regularly and pretty soon all will be in order, then you can enjoy the cleaner, fresher look.

Seniors Outreach Helping Seniors On Verge Of Homelessness According to Seniors Outreach’s executive director Vi Sorenson, “Finding a place to live is stressful enough for anyone, but picture someone who is losing cognition trying to call ads and have conversations with landlords. It can create a lot of anxiety and confusion.”

“People need to be housed, and the worries of moving and finding a home are overwhelming. Affordability has gone through the roof, and seniors in their seventies, eighties and even nineties are being evicted as landlords sell their houses in this hot housing market. These vulnerable people are struggling as they find themselves on the verge of experiencing homelessness.”

Seniors Outreach and Resource Centre offers several housing services through their Regional Housing Program including, the services of a Housing Social Worker that helps these older adults find housing and acts as an advocate and emotional resource for them.

B.C. Shifts To Step 3 Of Restart Plan

With British Columbians achieving nearly 80% adult Dose 1 vaccine coverage and COVID-19 case counts continuing to decline, the Province is safely moving to Step 3 of its four-step restart plan on July 1, 2021.

"British Columbians have stepped up at every stage throughout this pandemic," said Premier John Horgan. "We've helped our neighbours stay safe, we've sacrificed time with friends and family and we have

diligently registered to get vaccinated. We've now reached a point in our vaccination efforts when we can begin to remove restrictions. Let's continue to respect everyone's comfort level as we safely take another step toward putting this pandemic behind us."

Moving to Step 3 will signal the end to the longest provincial state of emergency in B.C.'s history. The emergency will be lifted on June 30 at 11:59 p.m.

B.C.'s public health emergency will remain in effect during Step 3 to support amended public health orders from the provincial health officer (PHO), with th reduced requirements.

During Step 3, businesses will gradually transition to new communicable disease plans, with guidelines for these plans released by WorkSafeBC on June 28.

These guidelines were developed in consultation with public health and businesses will continue to be supported by WorkSafeBC and the PHO as they transition.

Moving from Step 2 to Step 3 also includes: • return to normal for indoor and outdoor personal gatherings; • maximum capacity for indoor organized gatherings of 50 people or up to 50% of a venue's total capacity, whichever is greater;

• maximum capacity for outdoor organized gatherings of 5,000 people or up to 50% of a venue's total capacity, whichever is greater; • return to normal for fairs, festivals and trade shows, with communicable disease plans; • return to Canada-wide recreational travel; • reopening of casinos, with reduced capacity and ~50% of gaming stations permitted to open; • reopening of nightclubs, with up to 10 people seated at tables, no socializing between tables and no dancing; • return to normal hours for liquor service at restaurants, bars and pubs with table limits to be determined by venue and no socializing between tables; • return to normal for sports and exercise facilities, with communicable disease plans; and • mask wearing recommended in indoor public spaces for all people 12 and older who are not yet fully vaccinated.

Canadians travelling to B.C. from outside of the province are asked to plan ahead and be respectful while visiting communities, especially smaller and rural towns, as well as Indigenous communities - including respecting local travel advisories. More than 250 meetings and discussions have taken place since the launch of BC's Restart plan as part of government's ongoing engagement, a majority being with industry organizations that represent thousands of employers and tens of thousands of employees. This includes an industry engagement table on new workplace safety guidelines, led by Kahlon.

The four-step restart plan was designed based on data and guidance from the public health team led by the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) and Dr. Bonnie Henry, B.C.'s provincial health officer.

Progressing to each step of the plan will be measured by the number of people vaccinated, COVID-19 case counts and hospitalizations and deaths and other key public health metrics.

"Because of the efforts of people in B.C., we continue to see a significant decline in new cases of COVID-19, hospitalizations and deaths as the number of people who are fully immunized goes up," Henry said. "Public health teams throughout the province are closely watching the case data to ensure we maintain this positive momentum as we safely and gradually move into Step 3 of our Restart plan."

Adrian Dix, Minister of Health, said: "Nearly 80% of eligible adults in B.C. have protected themselves, the people they love and their communities by getting vaccinated. I urge everyone to get fully vaccinated with two doses as soon as they are offered and continue this life-saving momentum."

Arts & Culture from the Edge

People, Plants, and Pollinators The Monashee Arts Council (MAC) will be hosting their next show at the Village Gallery July 2 – 31, that underlines the relationship of art and nature.

Local Artists illustrate how native and non-native plants in bloom carry on the natural cycle of attracting pollinators such as bees, flies, wasps, beetles, moths, hummingbirds, and butterflies for mutual benefit. This important process also allows for human food production.

In 1699, Maria Sibylla Merian, a 52-year-old German artist and naturalist, travelled with her adult daughter Dorothea, to Surinam in South America, and was the first person to accurately observe insects as they transformed from egg, pupa, cocoon, and caterpillar to adult form—called metamorphosis. And the mutuality of plants and animals was accurately portrayed; her beautiful, detailed paintings were not just

still life.

In today’s world where we are faced with the dark possibility of extinction through global climate change, we find it is ever more important than ever to understand the importance of how to enhance the habitat of plants and animals, and of humans.

On Saturday, June 19, popular educator and naturalist Roseanne van Ee will give host a Q&A session between 1:30 and 3:30 pm at the gallery to talk about regeneration of gardens and of the land through Rewilding and Nature Scaping.

The gallery is open Monday through Saturday, 10 am to 4 pm. at 1975 Vernon St. (Hwy.6).

SPRINKLING REGULATIONS

EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY Due to the high consumption of water coupled with the extreme heat, the Village is implementing the following Sprinkling Restrictions. We are currently in the “Very Dry Stage” restrictions.

The stages of sprinkling restrictions are as follows: • Normal and Dry stage (year round) odd numbered houses may water on odd days, except that there shall be no watering on the 31st day of any month, even numbered houses on even days between the hours of 7am and 9am and 7pm and 10pm. Underground sprinkler systems on timers may water three non-consecutive days per week between the hours of 12am (midnight) and 5am. Hand watering with a hose with a shutoff device or water container may be used at any time for the watering of flowerbeds, baskets and containers.

The Monashee Trail Society received a grant June 26 2021 of $2500 from the Regional District of North Okanagan Area D Director Rick Fairbairn which will be used to support safe outdoor activities within the Lumby region. Society Directors receiving the grant on behalf of the Society are (Left to Right) Amanda Miller, Amanda Pinsonneault, Treasurer Laura Waugh, President Lindsay Cochrane, and Vice President Suzanne Schneider. This funding from the BC Ministry of Municipal Affairs assists non-profits in continuing to deliver services and core community activities during the pandemic and in the recovery period.

Campfires Prohibited In British Columbia Effective at noon (Pacific time) on Wednesday, June 30, 2021, campfires, Category 2 and Category 3 open fires will be prohibited throughout the province of British Columbia.

This prohibition will remain in effect until noon on Oct. 15, 2021, or until the order is rescinded.

The provincial weather forecast calls for record-breaking high temperatures throughout B.C. this week and follows a spring of lower-than-average precipitation in the southern half of the province.

These conditions are expected to persist in the coming weeks.

Camping is a long-standing tradition in this province. The B.C. government recognizes that people also enjoy having campfires, so it takes any decision to implement a campfire ban very seriously.

The BC Wildfire Service takes these extreme heat conditions seriously. Additional precautions are being undertaken throughout the province, including fire warden patrols, fixed-wing aircraft patrols and an active enforcement presence. Wildfire prevention is a shared responsibility. Human-caused wildfires are completely preventable and divert critical resources away from lightning-caused fires.

The BC Wildfire Service is constantly monitoring current and forecast conditions and maintaining preparedness.

A campfire is defined as any fire smaller than 0.5 metres high by 0.5 metres wide.

Anyone found in contravention of an open-burning prohibition may be issued a violation ticket for $1,150, may be required to pay an administrative penalty of up to $10,000 or, if convicted in court, may be fined up to $100,000 and/or sentenced to one year in jail. If the contravention causes or contributes to a wildfire, the person responsible may be ordered to pay all firefighting and associated costs.

Photos and Memories From The Lumby Museum From 1932 to 1990 a total of 3,315 flat bottom "Procter Row Boats" were designed and built by Mabel Lake's George Procter. The first boat was sold to Quinn Faulkner in 1932 for $10.00 and was used to fish at Sugar Lake. The last boat was sold to Bobby Procter in 1990. Most of the boats were sold to small fishing resorts (such as Echo Lake Resort) across Canada and the United States. George passed away in 2004 at the age of 98.
