Thank You! We would like to acknowledge Conrad Lavaliee, who owns Bo Sash Contracting (BSC). We don’t know Conrad personally, but about 3 years ago, the gals I walk with, were in Jitter Beans just chatting it up with this fellow, and he asked if he could buy us a coffee. We were totally taken by surprise, thanked him and said, no thanks and that was that! We realized after the fact that this was the fellow from Bo Sash!

Well just a few days ago we found out that Bo Sash Contracting has been donating all the hanging baskets around our village for the past 4 or 5 years! We were again totally surprised because as we all know hang-

ing baskets aren’t cheap! This year apparently Conrad has taken on the job of watering all the baskets as well! Some people may say Conrad is doing well in his contracting business and that’s well and good, but we feel he should at least be acknowledged for helping to make our Village so beautiful. It’s lovely to walk down the street and see these baskets so vibrant, healthy and well cared for!

We would like to extend a very warm ‘Thank You’ to Conrad for helping to beautify our town.

Kudos to you and your contracting company!

The McLaughlins Want to Thank Lumby Thank you very much Lumby and the greater White Valley community. 7 years ago, when we decided where we were going to move our family, there was only one community that we chose.

Lumby. This community is a safe, clean, and progressive village that respects its past while looking toward the future. Even today as we look to move east, we see Lumby growing because of the amazing work of the organizations and council that show it to be the best community in the Okanagan.

We have served this community in our roles as First Responders and developed programs to provide a hand up to those that need it and to also showcase the great work our schools are doing to prepare our children for the future. I have been honored to partner with the staff of JW Inglis to show kids the value and adventure only a book can bring. Watching your children read and being allowed to be their friend, is something I will always cherish.

We are thankful to the Food Bank for having the courage to take on the First Responders Food Drive program. We are thankful to the Chamber of Commerce for allowing us to bring you the Santa Claus Parade over the past few years. The business community here have always answered the call time and time again to give back to everyone. Always support them.

We are thankful to the council and staff of Village of Lumby and the men and women that have created, and continue to build a strong, safe community that is growing by the day. Your hard work is incredible. With the support of the Museum we even together restored a firetruck together!

I'm honored to be named the Good Citizen of the Year by the Lumby Lions Club as the Lions are an organization I've belonged to for 25 years. The work the Lumby and District Lions Club does for

this community is incredible. What a blessing.

We are extremely grateful to the First Responders that we've had the honor to work alongside every day that tirelessly protect this community with selfless dedication and professionalism. They have always stepped up to assist us in bringing programs to the community!

The men and women of the Lumby and District Fire Department is one of the best groups of heroes we have ever had the honor of knowing. Tony and Pat, you have always put Lumby before yourselves and we see the pride in the men and women that work to keep us all safe.

On a personal note I want to thank the Gustavson Family who have never said no to any of the projects we've done and always put others before themselves.

You two are the unsung heroes of the community. I wish everyone could see the selfless dedication and passion that I get to see.

From helping kids read books, to toys, to food, to Santa and Mrs Claus, know that these memories will be with us forever because our friends in this community made it easy.

The McLaughlin's are now looking toward our new adventure in Newfoundland and are excited about the challenges that lay ahead. We have been extremely touched about the outpouring of support from everyone who took the time to write, call, and simply say thanks. We thank YOU, for allowing us to become a part of this community and realize that the community you built made it an easy choice to move here years ago.

Although we will be at the other side of the country, know that we will be telling Newfoundland all about WhiteValley and the amazing people that call it home.

How Do Pickles Enjoy A Day Out?... They Relish It!!!

Cucumber Several people who were at the market this last Saturday mentioned that they are having trouble with their Cucumber plants, reporting poor growth and even the loss of the plant. I know our spring and early summer have been cooler than normal and that can severely affect the plant but several pests can also be the problem especially cut worms which I have noticed In larger numbers this year. Normally Cucumbers are easy to grow provided they have full sun, fertile soil, consistent water and warmth. They are very susceptible to cold damage. Cucumbers grow best at a temperature of 18 to 23 Celsius and temperatures of 13 Celsius and lower can damage and even kill your plant and this year it has been much cooler than normal. One of the first Lumby Market days was quite cool and after about an hour of my Cucumber plants being out they looked like they were dying. I put them back in the truck as I considered them unsaleable and within an hour they had perked back up and looked good. That was how quickly they can be affected by just a cooler day. You can use row covers or cover the soil before planting with black plastic to hold in the warmth and plant them where they will be sheltered from cool breezes. Cucumbers should be planted in a soil rich in organic matter and should be kept consis-

tently moist. Use a fertilizer that is lower in nitrogen and higher in potassium and phosphorous when you plant then again about a week after the blooms appear and then every few weeks after that. Do not fertilize too often as it will stunt the size of the fruit. Cold is not the only thing that can cause a decline In the health of your Cucumber plant they can be susceptible to spider mites, snails, slugs, aphids, whitefly and cutworms. Cutworms live under the soil and will curl into themselves when disturbed using Diatomaceous Earth when planting can help with the cutworm as well as slugs and snails. Placing a paper cone around your plant and into the soil also can protect young seedlings and a spray of soap and water will help with the spider mites, aphids, and whitefly. Alway trellis your cucumber plants up as this will keep the fruit clean and prevent damage and discolouration as well as save space and make the fruit easier to pick. Do not leave the cucumbers on the vine too long as they will just turn bitter and prevent the start of new cucumbers. Companion plants for the Cucumber include.

Lettuce, beans, carrots, peas, radish and nasturtium.

There are many health benefits that are attributed to the Cucumber. They are full of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and as they are 96 percent water they

contain almost no calories and are hydrating. Adding slices to water is refreshing and delicious. They can lower blood sugar, act as an anti inflammatory, a natural diuretic, promotes a healthy heart, wards off osteoporosis. It is also magnificent for the skin as a soothing mask it will help detoxify and hydrate the skin as well as promote the production of elastin and collagen. Slices of Cucumber applied to the eyes is soothing and reduces puffiness.

Call for Entries to People, Plants, and Pollinators for local artists Look closely at your gardens! The Monashee Arts Council (MAC) is sponsoring an open show in July that features the relationship between people, plants and pollinators.

Artists are welcome to submit two entries in either 2-D or 3-D mediums. Deadline is Wednesday, June 30. Applications can be picked up at the gallery Monday through Saturday 10 am to 4 pm at 1975 Vernon Street (Highway 6) in Lumby. You can also request an application by phone and email.

Please make sure the entry is suitably finished for hanging or standing display and is accompanied by a brief statement connecting your work to the theme of the show.

Probiotics - Kefir

Prebiotics vs Probiotics are terms you may hear quite often but are not sure exactly what they refer to or how they differ. Basically these “biotics” help with a healthy Microbiome or gut bacteria. This microbiome is like your second brain and has a huge impact on overall health.

Prebiotics act as a sort of gut fertilizer; they are essentially fiber or non-digestible carbohydrates that nourish healthy microorganisms – probiotics. To populate your gut with healthy microbes you need a variety of fibers and prebiotics in your diet. Most whole grains, nuts seeds, a variety of fruit and vegetables are going to give you a wide spectrum of healthy fiber and prebiotics. It is important to have a variety to reproduce good bacteria to larger colonies as there are so many different varieties of microbes.

When it comes to probiotics, we tend to hear a lot about yogurt. Although yogurt is great, an even better source is known as Kefir. Kefir grains contain up to

61 strains of bacteria and yeasts, making them a very rich and diverse probiotic source. They differ in that yogurt is the fermentation of bacteria in milk, and kefir is a combination of bacteria and yeast fermentations. The combination of bacteria and yeast is called “kefir grain.” Kefir grains are not typical grains, such as wheat or rice, and do not contain gluten. Milk is combined with the kefir grains and stored in a warm area to “culture,” producing the kefir beverage.

Kefir has been consumed for 1000’s of years within it’s origins of the Caucasus mountains in the former Soviet Union. The drink was fermented naturally in bags made of animals hides. The Benefits of Senior Exercise

As we age, a big obstacle that comes is lack of mobility and low energy. It is important to keep exercise a priority in our day to day life. Scientists strongly believe that regular exercise boosts blood flow to the brain which in turn releases brain derived neurotrophic factor, (BDNF). This is a protein known as “miracle-grow” for the brain which helps our memory, learning, and our ability to make decisions. Seniors benefit greatly from regular exercise. It is the single best thing we can do for our bodies and our brains.

Here are some benefits of senior exercise.

Physical activity is a true factor in maintaining a positive state of mind. It stimulates our muscles and keeps our joints healthy and lubricated. It protects against cognitive degeneration and dementia. Physical activity improves our blood flow which helps maintain a healthy heart and lessens our risk of heart disease.

Also it improves our immune systems that fight off

infections and disease.

It may seem intimidating at first, but being active doesn’t have to be hard. The benefits greatly outweigh the negatives. Exercise is not a miracle cure however; it has been shown to slow down disabilities and ailments that come with age. Here are a few ways to incorporate exercise into your life.

• Walking is one of the easiest things we can do that offers many health benefits.

• Stretching or doing yoga in the comfort of your home is also good way to stay fit. It lubricates our joints, stimulates the muscles and improves balance.

• Eating healthy is just as important as getting exercise. Being aware of what you are consuming, staying away from processed, refined foods and sugars. Eating a balanced diet is a big part of staying healthy

I guess it’s time to get down and dirty, no more pleasantries or soft spoken words here- We NEED your HELP! What else do we need to do to get your attention??? We need BUSINESSES to step up to the plate and we need PEOPLE to see the grim summer ahead for so many kids in our community!

Hold Up folks…. Should we be like the Ostrich and stick our heads into the ground and ignore the needs of our kids?

We wonder what happens when good kids turn bad… they may start to cause problems, steal, lie and even cheat… and we think to ourselves… gee what happened to that child… THINK ABOUT IT—does anyone care that these same kids may have just needed that extra hand to help out when times and foods were both tough?

I recall a story my dad told me many years ago, he wasn’t proud of it, and maybe he told me the story so that he could absolve his own guilt, but regardless it went like this. This proud fellow as a young dad, reaching some pretty tough times back in the sixties and was barely able to make ends meet, often struggling just to put a small amount of food on the table. Going into the grocery store with only a few bucks to his name with a grocery list in his head much longer, he fell into despair as he tried to stretch his money to its limits. When the money was gone he could still hear the echoing of the kids words that by now were scorched firmly into his mind’s eye “Daddy when you go get some food can we have a tiny bit of cheese”? It had been so long since

Why in the world that we live in at this day and age should any child go hungry when there is so much waste? I ask you on behalf of the kids in our area to help them over the summer months! On average we feel that if we were to be able to provide even a small weekly bag of food that it would cost a minimum of $20.00 per child. This would ensure at least these kids were getting some fruit and simple veggies to keep them healthy. The real question is… how many kids can you help out at $20.00 a week? Are you willing to reach deep into the heart of your pocketbook and feed maybe 2 kids every week for 8 weeks? That’s what it’s all about… $160.00 will help feed 2 kids over the summer months…

Now in closing I will apologize for my tardiness in getting the registrations sent out and the website updated… I had a graduating daughter this year and wanted to give her my undivided attention! So this is what is happening next…. I will hand out registration forms on Tuesdays- which are extras day at the food bank….as well as leaving them at Whitevalley Community Resource Centre, and at the Lumby Thrift Shop-

This is a column meant for fun and some information About myself: I am a Freelance Photographer you often see me on the side of the road or in various places taking photos of different things animals, birds, places, people etc. l have lived in Lumby just over 8 years,you have seen my photos in the newspaper (Lumby Valley Times) and once in awhile in the Vernon Morning Star, and the Lumby Art Gallery.

Photography is my passion. Disclaimer: The information on some of my photos that I write about a lot of times come from the Internet or books I research them, hopefully the facts are as close to the truth as I can come.

A Really Cool Looking Flower

It likes Full Sun, although it will be okay in some shade as that is where my White ones grew, but they didn't get as tall as the Purple ones. They can flower from May until July.

When the flower dies, cut off the flower, and cut the stem short. (I did not do this, as even the flower after it died looked cool in a flower arrangement.)

If the leaves have turned yellow, cut them off.This helps the bulbs to stock up on their nutrients for the next blooming time. No Fertilizer is required. Like I said: super easy.

They are such cool looking flowers that I think I will buy more bulbs this year, and plant them in various parts of my gardens.

A couple of years ago we decided to plant some bulbs that we had never tried before. What a delightful surprise this one was. Two of the flowers came up white, while the other ones came up purple, there are also yellow, pink, and blue flowers that can grow from this plant. It can grow between 8- 40 "tall, some of mine grew to the height of 12" YAY! This is one of the hundreds of species of the Allium,(also known as Ornamental Onion) which by the way is from the Lily family ( ahha, no wonder I like it so much.) Super easy to grow in your garden or in flower pots ( I haven't tried that one yet, but I think I will.) If you plant them in pots, they will need to be watered more often. Drought Tolerant, Deer and Rodent Resistant, attracts Bees, and Butterflies, how can you wrong with a plant like that?

Although if ingested it can be very toxic to Cats and Dogs, My dogs have been near the plants many times, and have never tried to eat them. Probably because if the leaves are rubbed they smell like an onion.

When Dawn was making Garden Art from Upcycle Glass, Mosaics, Stepping Stones, Crockery, and Plates for her designs she found herself becoming very attracted to the beautiful designs on Vintage Fine China, and other types of dishware. A new thought came to her.

Instead of having these plates load up the landfill, why not create something that would be useful, different and beautiful, something people could appreciate. Being someone that likes to research different things, and finding unique ways to create nostalgic and very interesting items. Dawn took some time and learned how to make Vintage China Jewelry. Update: Cherry Ridge Management Committee Submitted by Joyce Fleury, President, CRMC Joyce.fleury@gmail.com Recent CRMC monthly general meetings have been held via Zoom teleconference, due to Covid pandemic restrictions for in-person meetings.

The CRMC constitution has been updated with a number of changes suggested by legal counsel, along with other changes to address management responsibilities for the Cherryville Community Forest. An information package with ballots for a special resolution vote was mailed to Cherryville residents, with ballots returned unanimously in favour of the changes to CRMC’s constitution. The revised constitution has been uploaded to the BC Societies Registrar web site.

CRMC maintains a number of special financial accounts, in support of its environmental and community forest mandate, including:

Discussions about contracting a biologist for the community forest are on the agenda as an important action item. Biological assessments are required as part of the Forest Stewardship Plan for community forests. CRMC directors are actively looking for a candidate biologist.

CRMC continues to act as a financial management resource in support of independent water testing activities performed by the Cherryville Water Stewards.

Dedicated CWS volunteers conduct regular water sampling and analysis surveys to provide Cherryville residents with important professional baseline reports on local water quality at various locations.

CRMC directors have met with personnel from Crown Lands and the Vernon Forest District at the Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development for continuing discussions regarding CRMC’s proposal to purchase several Crown lots in the Richlands area under a Crown grant application as a community resource. CRMC remains committed to pursuing the option to purchase as the long-term goal. As an interim objective, however, a formal designation of these Crown blocks as an Old Grown Management Area may be possible to address the community’s immediate concern for preserving these forested lots. OGMA blocks are designed to protect healthy trees; the only logging allowed would be for forest health requirements, which is consistent with CRMC’s mandate. CRMC adoption of OGMA-equivalent standards for the property may be an asset in purchase negotiations as a commitment to “community use” values. No matter what status is ultimately determined for this area, First Nations approval is a fundamental requirement.

PORCUPINE BALLS

In my wife’s large Irish-Canadian family Canada Day meant two things; Uncle Henry’s birthday and the annual big bash on the beach. A huge bonfire was lit; the old laundry cauldron was thrown into action as a giant pot for corn on the cob, and hotdogs and marshmallows roasted over the fire. Coghlan kith and kin of all ages arrived one after the other bearing home-made food. Auntie Violet’s potato salad was legendary and Uncle Thomas’ Colcannon was in high demand. Needless to say there was a lot of fiddle music, singing and Jameson’s on hand. However, the party fell silent when Auntie Olive arrived with her signature dish: Porcupine Balls. Perhaps it was the name, but the kids loved Auntie Olive’s Porcupine Balls!

Imagine my wife’s delight when she found a recipe for it in the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) Diet slow cooker cookbook! The diet was developed to help lower high blood pressure and improve blood lipids (cholesterol) which it does quite well. Overall it’s a diet that will help you take better care of your heart health. According to the Mayo Clinic, there are two types of Dash diet, the standard and the lower-sodium. Both can help reduce blood pressure, but the second one is best for folks who are over 51 years of age, have HBP, diabetes or chronic kidney disease. This recipe won’t make nearly enough

for a family reunion, but it makes a fine family meal served with a green salad and a dessert of low fat yoghurt and your choice of seasonal fruit.

INGREDIENTS FOR THE SAUCE: • 2 x 14 ounce cans diced tomatoes, 1 drained and 1 with juice • ½ onion, grated • 3 garlic cloves, minced • 1 teaspoon Organic Italian Seasoning • ½ teaspoon Sea Salt • ¼ teaspoon Ground Black Pepper • Pinch Cayenne pepper INGREDIENTS FOR THE MEATBALLS • 1 pound extra lean ground beef • 3 cups cooked Brown Rice, divided • ½ onion grated • 3 garlic cloves, minced • 1 egg, beaten • 1 teaspoon Organic Italian Seasoning • ½ teaspoon Sea Salt • ¼ teaspoon Ground Black Pepper

In a medium bowl mix the ground beef, one cup of the cooked rice and the rest of the ingredients together. Next, use a small scoop to form the mixture into balls, put them in the slow cooker, pour in the sauce, cover and cook on low for 8 hours. Spoon the meatballs and sauce over the remaining 2 cups of cooked rice and serve. Sláinte – to your good health!

Fencing on Heckman Ridge was completed to maintain a barrier between range cattle in the community forest and adjoining private properties.

CRMC’s operations in the Cherryville Community Forest in recent years have led to a significant overcut, due to heavy fir bark beetle infestations and windfall. This is expected to be offset by a reduction in future Annual Allowable Cut volumes. After the beetle problem is determined to be under control, a re-inventory may be required to reduce the AAC to a lower sustainable level.

The bug risk on Cherry Ridge now should be minimal. Green bug attack trees were hauled out with last year’s blow down and about 2500 cubic metres (60 loads) have been removed in this year’s logging

effort.

In recently completed silviculture work, more than 41,000 trees have been replanted on Heckman and Cherry ridges this year, for a total of about 145,000 trees planted in the past 4 years.

Every effort is made to enlist local contractors whenever possible for all operations in the Cherryville Community Forest.

The 2021 CRMC Annual General Meeting has been postponed, awaiting a time when larger in-person gatherings of people can be safely accommodated. A fourth annual S-100 fire-fighting course, community barbeque and public tour of the community forest will also be back on the agenda. In the meantime, if you would like to join us for a monthly CRMC general meeting – or if you have any questions at all – please contact me for more information.
