A little help for a local Funding and prayer request for Deirdra Buerge.

Deirdre Buerge has lived in Lumby most of her life, overcoming the struggles that being born with cerebral palsy presents. On Feb 15, 2021 she gave birth to her third child, Knox. While in hospital, Deirdra was diagnosed with leukemia. She and her husband Charles, along with new baby Knox were sent to hospital in Vancouver, where all three of them were unfortunate to be diagnosed with Covid-19. Their other two you children remain in Lumby under care of Charles’ mother, Angela Meger. Because he needs to be with Deirdra and care for Knox, Charles is unable to work. The Lumby Thrift Store is accepting donations specifically for Deirdra Buerge and her family to assist them at this time. Thrift Store open hours: Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday 10-3.

Local & Regional News Affordable Seniors Rental Housing Units in Lumby The Lumby & District Senior Citizens Housing Society and the Village of Lumby are incredibly excited to be partnering with the Province of BC to build 20 affordable seniors rental housing units.

These 20 units will assist Lumby in addressing the affordable housing need for seniors in the community.

The projects are funded through the Building BC: Community Housing Fund and will provide 2,455 rental homes for individuals, families, seniors, people with disabilities and Indigenous peoples.

“Seniors in Lumby have had a challenging time finding a place to call home that is affordable and ac-

cessible,” says Vernon-Monashee MLA Harwinder Sandhu.

Elinor Warner President of The Lumby & District Senior Citizens Housing Society says “ Our Society would like to thank the Council and all of the Community organizations who supported and made our application successful. These homes are needed and we look forward to the completion of the project.

Mayor Acton says “The last time I spoke with the president of the society she advised me that they have a 2-page waiting list. After learning this Council met with staff to work on providing property to assist the society in filling this much needed gap in our housing for seniors.”

Why Did The Tomato Blush?... Because It Saw The Salad Dressing

The Tomato

From frost and cold in the first week of June to the unseasonal 34 degree hot spell the following week, it has been a real grab bag of seasonal change but I think it is now safe to plant the garden. The market last Saturday started with rain and cleared up for a very pleasant day with lots of people out and about then back to pouring rain and hail to finish it off. It was expected to be rainy on Saturday but our hardy vendors were there like troopers as were our regular customers with a nice splash of new comers to our market. Such a treat! The weather was predicted to be cool and dry this spring and if the predictions continue to be correct we should have a cooler summer with more rain and the fall should be warmer with less rain.

The Tomato is probably one of the most rewarding and productive additions to most gardens. There is nothing tastier than a garden fresh Tomato especially if it is grown in your own garden and it is not that difficult to be a success at growing them even if its in a pot on your balcony. They do however require some attention and the right nutrients and of course some loving care. The varieties of Tomatoes are endless and with the many new hybrids that are disease resistant everyone can grow enough to provide themselves with this delight. Tomatoes are one of the few plants that should be planted deeper that the soil level that your plant will be when purchased. This allows for more roots to develop and that will mean more nutrients will be taken into the plant. There are some perils to be considered when growing the plant as over and under watering can be a problem.

They are fairly hardy and most errors in their care can be corrected quickly if you pay attention to the progress of your plant. Once your Tomato plant is planted and established it enjoys a good deep watering of about 2” in depth weekly this of course may have to be increased if the weather becomes extremely hot.

Growing them in pots will be different and you should ensure they receive good moisture without drowning them. Mulching can be used to conserve moisture and suppress weeds however, if we do receive a lot of rain over a long period of time this mulch may need to be

removed. Watch for yellowing leaves as well as a change in their texture to make your decision. Pruning is also important, suckers that grow from the main stem near the base of the plant should be removed as well as the growth that appears in the axis of the branches that grow from the main stem. Also remove any leaves that are yellowing or that extend down and are touching the ground. This can help prevent any fungal diseases that can be picked up from the soil. If you smoke cigarettes be sure to wash your hands before touching the plant as mosaic virus can be transmitted to the plant from tobacco. Tomatoes should not be planted in the same area of your garden for two years and should be spaced at least 2 feet apart.

Many people put egg shells in the planting hole being used for their Tomato plants and this can be good as calcium is vital to the plant to prevent blossom end rot. If there is a spot at the bottom of the fruit it can easily reversed for the upcoming fruit by applying a calcium based fertilizer, using egg shells at this point will not work unless you make a tea from egg shells as it take some time for the calcium to be extracted and absorbed and the plant needs calcium immediately.

Epsom salts is a great treat for your Tomatoes as well as most of your other household and garden plants but should be used sparingly 1 teaspoon in a gallon of water once a month is sufficient. This will give your plants trace minerals and will help with uptake of calcium that your plant requires.

Ketogenic, Ketosis, Ketones

Although keto is the rave these days as a weight loss diet, it wasn’t originally intended for that. The ketogenic diet was developed to control epilepsy in the 1920’s. Doctors realized that keeping patients on a low carb diet forced their bodies to use fat as a fuel source instead of glucose. They didn’t quite understand why this worked on the brain, but knew a few things • Ketogenic means that ketones are produced in the body. (keto = ketone; genic = producing) Ketones are formed when the body uses fat for its source of energy.

• Usually, the body uses carbohydrates for its fuel.

Because the ketogenic diet is very low in carbohydrates, fats become the primary fuel instead. The body can work very well on ketones (and fats).

• Ketones can be detected in the urine, blood, and breath.

Just recently new studies by a research team at Emory University School of Medicine showed that the diet alters genes involved in energy metabolism in the brain, which in turn helps stabilize the function of neurons exposed to the challenges of epileptic seizures.

They found that the ketogenic diet treatment significantly increased the number of mitochondria per unit area in the hippocampus. This finding, along with the concerted increase in the expression of genes encoding energy metabolic enzymes, led them to conclude that the treatment enhances energy production in the hippocampus and may lead to improved neuro-

nal stability. Because the diet enhances the brain's ability to withstand metabolic challenges, they also believe the ketogenic diet should be studied as a possible treatment for other neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's or Parkinson's diseases. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2005/11/051114220938.htm The medical original ketogenic diet is very specific and monitored by a medical team, neurologist and a ketogenic dietitian.

This is much different than the keto diet for weight loss. Both can cause constipation or other not so fun side effects, mineral deficiencies, energy loss or rash. But with a medical team many of these can be addressed as patients are not doing it “alone” More ketones are beneficial for the brain but not necessarily for weight loss.

There are 2 different things happening with the keto diet. Glucose is usually the brain’s main fuel, but your brain as explained above, can utilize ketones effectively. Ketones can provide 75% of the brains energy when carbs fall under 50grams per day. However, there are portions that require glucose but can be supplied by the small amount of carbs consumed. The other process happening in the body is that fat is now being used as the main fuel source for rest of the body.

Your muscles can use fat as a fuel but your brain cannot. Ketones are the outcome of a process your body does, in when glucose and insulin levels are low,

Elder Abuse

As older adults we can sometimes become more of a target to some people. But staying educated and having people you can reach out to can help prevent you falling victim to Elder Abuse.

Elder abuse is any action by someone in a relationship of trust that results in harm or distress to an older person. Neglect is a lack of action by that person in a relationship of trust with the same result. Commonly recognized types of elder abuse include physical, psychological and financial. Often, more than one type of abuse occurs at the same time. Abuse can be a single incident or a repeated pattern of behavior.

Financial abuse is the most commonly reported type of elder abuse.

Often the person being abused knows and trusts the person abusing them; therefore it is extremely important to recognize the signs. It can be very hard to detect but some of the following symptoms may indicate that an older adult is being abused in one way or another.

• fear, anxiety, depression or passiveness in relation to a family member, friend or care provider; • unexplained physical injuries; • dehydration, poor nutrition or poor hygiene; • improper use of medication; • confusion about new legal documents, such as a new will or a new mortgage; • sudden drop in cash flow or financial holdings; and • reluctance to speak about the situation.

BC/Yukon Command of the Royal Canadian Legion Receives Much Needed Funds for Veterans and their Families

Earlier today, the BC Provincial Government released a statement providing new relief funding for Legion branches in BC. This will help ensure our branches can continue to provide essential services to our veterans and their families, and community services across BC. Like many in the food and beverage industry, Royal Canadian Legion branches in BC have been navigating this challenging economic crisis. The updated public order for Food and Liquor Serving Premises released on April 21, 2021 directly affected Legions,

Photography is my passion. Disclaimer: The information on some of my photos that I write about a lot of times come from the Internet or books I research them, hopefully the facts are as close to the truth as I can come.

Notes From the Lumby Public Market

Soft and Fuzzy Whoo Hoo I got a new plant from Sam at the market this Saturday.

Some of you might already have this cool, velvet soft plant. I haven't ever had this plant before, so I am pretty excited. Hey and guess what! It attracts Bees, Hummingbirds, and Butterflies, what more could I ask for. It's called Lambs Ear. It gets its name because the leaves are in the shape of a Lamb's Ear. Apparently it has some good properties. For instance you can use it on a sting from a Bee, or to help with healing small wounds. Originally from the Middle East, this plant can be drought tolerant.

It can be grown in really poor soil, but not very moist soil. It likes the sun, but can also be grown in part shade. It is great for rock gardens.

Lambs Ear can be grown with other perennials or in a container. If planting them in ground, don't go too deep, about as deep as the original pot only.

Too much water can lead to rotting,

place some mulch under the leaves for prevention of this. In the spring, if you prune the leaves that have turned brown,and deadhead the already spent flowers this will help prevent the Lambs Ear from self seeding.

I think this soft velvety plant will be a great addition to my gardens as long as it doesn't take over.

This week our vendor of the week was Robin LeDrew representing the Monashee Arts Council (MAC.) The Monashee Arts Council has been in our Village since 1999, Mac operates the Village Gallery located at 1975 Vernon St. They are a non-profit society helping to support and promote the Arts and Culture in our community.

Mac gives out grants and bursaries to groups for events and students, helping them to further their education in the arts. MAC has a spot at our market, if you are a MAC member talk to them about using the spot sometimes. You

will find Robin there during the summer on alternate weeks , there you will see her demonstrating and teaching watercolor, and other types of water based paintings. Materials will be supplied, come and see Robin in two weeks at the market.

We have a good variety of vendors at our market. Jams, Plants, Photography, Tupperware, Gel Moment, Epicure, Watkins, Victorian Lace, Homemade Purses, Garth's Barnwood, Kodiak and Renee are there with their cool signs, and Essential Oils, Bannack, Jewelry, and so many more exciting things, there is always something there for everyone no matter what age.

Interior Health Launches Mobile Immunization Clinics Interior Health’s #journey2immunity has kicked into high gear with the introduction of mobile immunization clinics that will travel across the Interior Health region to target rural and remote communities, and other hard to reach populations.

“We know that the best way to ensure that everyone who wants a vaccine is able to get one is by removing as many barriers to access as possible,” said Interior Health president and CEO, Susan Brown. “These two mobile clinics are heading out on a road trip that will make it easier for many people in the Interior to get their COVID-19 vaccine in their home community.”

One mobile immunization clinic will travel through communities in the South Okanagan, Kootenay Boundary and East Kootenay, making initial stops

in Big White, Peachland, Okanagan Falls, Hedley and Princeton. The second mobile immunization will complete its journey through the North Okanagan and Thompson Cariboo Shuswap regions, with stops first in Cherryville, Lumby, the Okanagan Indian

Band, Falkland and Armstrong.

Interior Health has worked with provincial partners to design and implement the mobile clinics. Two trailers are fully-equipped and have been provided by the British Columbia Automobile Association (BCAA) and will make stops in more than 40 communities along the way.

The clinics will focus on providing first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to eligible people who are 12+ (born in 2009 or earlier), and appointments at the clinics along the way will not be required.

“Pictograph Reflections” with artist David Wilson Sookinakin David Wilson Sookinakin is a renowned First Nations artist from the Okanagan Nation. As a child, David looked for his own Nation’s art forms, but could only find a few pictographs. After discovering a book of local pictographs in the public library, he studied it extensively and went on to develop his own style of art from this. “I create First Nations Art using ancient pictographs of my Ancestors to create a contemporary and new First Nations Art Form.”

His expressive paintings are created on large canvases measuring 4 – 5 feet. Other mediums include drums and printmaking.

David expanded his skills and knowledge studying at the West Coast with Haida and Salish artists. He has become an accomplished artist who has added strength and vibrancy to the collective voice of First Nations artists. His accomplishments include being the winner of the 2012 BC Achievement Awards in Aboriginal Art. His famous work can be found in public art collections such as UBC Okanagan Campus and the Kelowna Airport.

With an ever-evolving creative path, David’s latest projects include a children’s publication, and creating new pictographs for his language. In the future, he would like to create a mural of picto-tiles for schools.

David’s collection will also be joined by art from local First Nation and Metis Artists with the show running from from June 1st to 30th.

Yam vs. Sweet Potato

Yup, there’s a lot of confusion about this. First, the skin of a Real Yam (a starchy edible root) is bumpy, tough and brown, kinda looks like tree bark, while that of a sweet potato is more reddish brown. Depending on the variety, sweetpotato flesh can vary from white to orange and even purple. The orange-fleshed variety was introduced to the United States several decades ago. A true yam is the starchy root of the Dioscorea genus, and is generally imported to North America from the Caribbean for use in Caribbean or West African cooking. It is rough and scaly and very low in beta carotene.

Summer Is Coming!

We’re Joining You Out On The Water

Starting today, June 4th, Vernon North Okanagan RCMP officers will be out patrolling lakes throughout the North Okanagan.

The seasonal patrols will focus on ensuring the safe, lawful enjoyment of our waterways, and the RCMP want to remind residents that the first step to having a safe, enjoyable time out on the water is to prepare in advance.

“If you are going out on the water, being prepared in advance and having the necessary safety equipment will allow you to better manage any emergencies that should arise,” states Constable Chris Terleski, Media Relations Officer for the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP. “We also want to remind boaters that every power-driven boat requires the operator to hold a valid pleasure craft operator’s license. Failing to provide a valid license could result in the operator being directed to shore and ticketed under the Small Vessel Regulations (SVR).”

Since alcohol related boating incidents account for approximately 40% of boating-related fatalities on Ca-

nadian waterways, police are going to be on the look out for impaired boating.

“Operating a vessel while impaired is a Criminal offence in Canada and not only is it illegal, it’s unsafe and can be incredibly dangerous for yourself and others," adds Terleski. ‘Whether you are swimming, canoeing, kayaking, or operating a motorized watercraft, if you are going out on the water, stay sober."

Before you jump in to cool off this summer, here are a few simple safety tips to remember: • Do not put your feet in fast moving water that is • If you cannot swim, stay out of the water and seek deeper than the length of your arm. MONASHEE COMMUNITY FOREST LLP Harvesting and Road Building Contractors The Monashee Community Forest is accepting tenders for conventional roadside harvesting, and road construction contractors. This cutting permit (CP BB 2021) has an estimated volume of 34,351 m3. There is approximately 5.0 km of permanent road to be constructed, 1.4 km of temporary road to be constructed and rehabilitated, and 5.1 km of road that requires brushing and subgrade improvement.

There are approximately 15 kms of permanent road to be maintained on Coldstream Creek, Bardolph, and Moonshine FSR’s. The Monashee Community Forest is located Northwest of the Village of Lumby. Information packages are available for pick up at the village of Lumby municipal office located at 1775 Glencaird Street in Lumby between June 3rd and June 11th, 2021.

The "Old Goose" or "Galloping Goose" was used at the Henry Sigalet & Co. Pole yard to load and unload poles and logs from 1936 to 1960. The "Goose" had a 60 foot boom and was a converted steam shovel formerly used by CN Railways. The "Goose" was purchased from CN for $3,000.00.
