New Salmon Trail To the Editor, I spent a lovely hour and a half on the new Salmon Trail this morning doing some plein air watercolor and appreciating the passers by. I think this addition to the community is a wonderful asset. As an older person I really liked the clean and accessible bathroom....Thanks to the Village and all those who made this happen.

Bombing of Gaza To the Editor, Hi, just to let you know I seldom venture into writing Letters to the Editor. However, in arriving late on Saturday May 22 to a demonstration outside Mel Arnold’s office (our MP) in Vernon, I was reminded how many people are concerned about the catastrophic bombing of Gaza and the indiscriminate killing of Palestinian children. It was a diverse crowd of at least 60 people of all ages and ethnicities with signs upholding the rights of Palestinians to exist. The event was sponsored by the Okanagan chapter of CJPME, Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East, a group I had not been previously involved with. And yet despite the terrible oppression of Palestine and Palestine, theirs was a rational, balanced message that “all parties must be held to the same standards”, and that “all positions should respect international law and human rights”.

I feel that we are all connected to people somewhere, some how. Do our pension funds buy stocks in weapons that are sold from Canadian firms to the Israeli military sector? Does the restaurant owner you know have Palestinian relatives living in refugee camps in West Bank, Jordan, Syria or Lebanon? Do you have friends whose parents were survivors of the Holocaust, who migrated to Israel, and instinctively

know the pain and fear of the current situation?

Let me remind the reader that after World War II, land ownership in Israel-Palestine was 6% Jewish and 94% Palestinian. Since 1947 under the UN Palestinian Plan, the armed conflict of 1948, and the 1967 invasion of West Bank and Gaza, Israel has continuously taken land from Palestinian ownership. This is a military and colonial takeover. Gaza and West Bank is described as the largest outdoor prison in the world with unbelievable restrictions, a 700 km. wall around West Bank, encroachment of illegal Jewish settlement, Jewish-only roads, “security zones” and curfews as well as random and continual harassment. 70% of Palestinians are refugees, millions of them internally displaced with no right of return under Israeli law.

I am not sure how this conflict will ever end. We can ask our government to withhold all military aid to Israel, use economic and diplomatic pressure to end the conflict. Human creativity can be put to framing a just solution. Young people are more open to getting past a stalemate if they can only take heart. The continued apartheid against Palestinians and their land is a monstrous situation, what can we do to make it end?

Response: Vegan vs Carnivores To the Editor, Thanks to Mikkie Nettles for her article, Vegan vs Carnivores, in the May 21, 2021 edition of the LVT. I am not meaning to knock her message but I do have a couple comments to hopefully add to the discussion.

Most of the points made under Environmental Impact are a result of industrial agriculture. That does not make them any less true, however.

When we started our local food co-op here in Lumby in 2014 among our mandates was to promote local, organic, sustainable, regenerative agriculture

(including ranching).

Huge global big-ag corporations, whose only mandate is to maximize profits and to establish a monopoly on food, have spent many millions of dollars hiring the world's biggest public relations firms to convince us with their propaganda and cooked studies that there is no other way. That we cannot possibly feed ourselves without their chemicals and patented GMO seeds.

I do not believe that is true. I believe that our only hope is in smaller scale decentralized regenerative agriContinued on page 8

The Rotation Of The Earth, Really Makes My Day!

Planting By The Light Of The Moon I hope everyone had a wonderful long weekend! It was another busy market on Saturday with many people out enjoying the beautiful weather and happy to start in on their gardens. I was sorry to hear that a few people lost plants last week with our unseasonal cold night ,it was predicted to be a cooler spring but this has been a bit much. I too made the mistake of taking my Hibiscus trees outside for the summer and they got quite a hit even though they were on my deck. I have given them a sever haircut hoping that the damage was mostly on the tops of them but several days later I see the damage is a bit more pronounced. They will make it but it will be a while before they are really nice again, at least I didn’t loose them.

Traditionally the long weekend In May has been the benchmark for planting the garden and now that is here I’m sure people are busy planting. Other considerations for some people planting their gardens are the phases of the moon. Shifting gravitational pull has a profound affect on people, animals and plants.

Moisture levels during the Full and New Moons increase and it is beneficial when planting seeds. Different phases affect some plants more than others and Planting Calendars can be used to determine what to

The Full Moon one should plant seeds and plants such as carrots, potatoes, onions and beets. Basically root crops as increased energy will be pulled into the roots and moisture levels again are generally higher.

This is also a good time to plant bulbs and perennials.

The Waning Moon is considered a good time for other activities in the garden besides planting. It is also suggested to mow the lawn during this phase as it will slow the growth of the lawn and therefor the need to mow as often is reduced.

The last Full Moon was the 11th of May and probably would have been fine for seeds as they would not have suffered from the frost. The Waxing Moon was on the 19th and the next New Moon is on the 26th and I will try to get all my flower beds ready to plant around this time and leading up to the next Full Moon. I hope that this proves helpful as I usually depend on time, weather and an abundance of energy to determine when I plant!

Vegan vs Carnivores – Part 2 Our Carbon Footprint

Last week I outlined the health and environmental impacts with both vegan and carnivore diets. Although it sounded grim for both there are things you can do to improve your health and the environment.

Health wise many of the environmental considerations will automatically improve one’s diet with most impact being towards carnivores. Also, if not yet vegan, but depending on your why, consider maybe sustainable fish as part of your diet instead of full vegan which again will help solve some of the environmental impacts on deforestation and water shortages. Please do your research and consider food security first and foremost. Most of us living in this country are privileged to be able to afford and pick and choose what we eat. Some may not have the financial means and in poorer nations not even a choice. So do what you can, as little goes a long way on the impact of the earth and for those that have no choice. Unfortunately, poorer nations are always impacted by our actions to the deforestation of their forests to unclean water or shortages to get the food we want.

The study examines the challenges of simultaneously addressing hunger and the climate crisis at both the individual and country levels.

What we can do as a society 1. Buy local and organic if possible a. For veggies/fruits/nuts/seeds or meat b. Choose pasture-raised meat from ethical suppliers, local farmers c. Choose locally-fed or grass-fed meat d. Buy eggs from a local farmer or supermarket and look for i. Cage free/organic – feed is organic and not raised in cages ii. Range or roaming – chickens raised outside, eating grains, and forage for wild plants and insects 2. Grow your own veggies/fruits and freeze or dry

Some key points that came out of the study were: 1. A diet in which the animal protein came predominantly from low food chain animals, such as small fish and mollusks, had nearly as low of an environmental impact as a vegan diet.

2. A diet that involved reducing animal food consumption by two-thirds generally had a lower climate and water footprint than the more traditional lacto-ovo vegetarian diet.

3. There's no one-size-fits-all diet to address the climate and nutrition crises, for prescribing broad dietary recommendations to meet the needs of individual countries 4. A food's country of origin can have enormous consequences for climate. a. For example, one pound of beef produced in Paraguay contributes nearly 17 times more greenhouse gases than one pound of beef produced in Denmark.

When someone is having a stroke, every minute counts. Just as putting out a fire quickly can stop it from spreading, treating a stroke quickly can reduce damage to the brain. If you learn how to recognize the telltale signs of a stroke, you can act quickly and save a life— maybe even your own.

If you think someone may be having a stroke, act F.A.S.T. and do the following simple test: F—Face: Ask the person to smile.

Does one side of the face droop?

A—Arms: Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

S—Speech: Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is the speech slurred or strange?

T—Time: If you see any of these signs, call 9-1-1 right away.

You can greatly reduce your risk for stroke by watching your weight, managing your blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol, drinking alcohol in moderation, quitting smoking, and regularly exercising. And if you have a family history of stroke or heart disease, see your physician for regular check-ups.

This is a column meant for fun and some information About myself: I am a Freelance Photographer you often see me on the side of the road or in various places taking photos of different things animals, birds, places, people etc. l have lived in Lumby just over 8 years,you have seen my photos in the newspaper (Lumby Valley Times) and once in awhile in the Vernon Morning Star, and the Lumby Art Gallery. Photography is my passion. Disclaimer: The information on some of my photos that I write about a lot of times come from the Internet or books I research them, hopefully the facts are as close to the truth as I can come.

Sealed And Ready To Go In 1938, Dr. Morris Blum (dentist) wanted to capture the photo of wife forever. So he took some dental veneer and placed his wife's picture between two layers, and Bang here was the first lamination.

Laminating a piece of paper, ID Cards, Documents, Photos, etc. consists of gluing two or more items together within a plastic cover which protects the items for a long time against wear and tear.

There are different types of Laminating an item.

There is pouch Laminating (this is the one I use.)

Here I place my papers or whatever in the plastic pouch, and put it into the Laminator, when it passes through the Laminator it is pressurized with a veneer that is heat activated. It does not take very long, and within seconds I have my papers sealed and ready to go. I can put the papers outside if I want as they are

protected now. You can get the plastic for Laminating in different thickness and sizes. The sizes are 3, 5, 7, and 10 mil. The smaller size will provide light protection for very light spills or stains. # 5 will help to protect longer and is harder to bend. When you move up to the larger sizes of 7 and 10 you will find these ones to be the most durable and are great for your luggage tags, or your ID cards.

Then There is the Lamination that is rolled. This can be either heated or cold. These types are usually used in industrial and high volume places. The heated one is used there because the gluing process is much faster, giving you a very high quality of lamination. In the Cold lamination there is a stick-on method that requires the glossy back peeled off to bring out the glue. Once the adhesive is revealed you would

then place it on to your item to be laminated. Cold laminators work well with inkjet printers, which at times use inks that would not be very good for hot laminators. Cold Laminators may also be used to coat stainless steel such as metal signs, or sheet glass.

Whichever way you choose, remember that laminating can be fun, quick, and easy and all the while protecting your stuff.

This is an opportunity to show a diverse range of artwork and craft from our own community, and to express yourself in your own unique way.

If you have a piece of artwork that you would like to share in the show, please come into the Monashee Art Gallery on or before May 31st and fill out the applicable forms.

Memberships may be renewed/obtained at time of delivery. MAC will need the following information for each piece of work: Title, Medium, Size, Price (if selling), Description (how, why, when or where), Name of Artist.

“Pictograph Reflections” with artist David Wilson Sookinakin David Wilson Sookinakin is a renowned First Nations artist from the Okanagan Nation. As a child, David looked for his own Nation’s art forms, but could only find a few pictographs. After discovering a book of local pictographs in the public library, he studied it extensively and went on to develop his own style of art from this. “I create First Nations Art using ancient pictographs of my Ancestors to create a contemporary and new First Nations Art Form.”

His expressive paintings are created on large canvases measuring 4 – 5 feet. Other mediums include drums and printmaking.

David expanded his skills and knowledge studying at the West Coast with Haida and Salish artists. He

has become an accomplished artist who has added strength and vibrancy to the collective voice of First Nations artists. His accomplishments include being the winner of the 2012 BC Achievement Awards in Aboriginal Art. His famous work can be found in public art collections such as UBC Okanagan Campus and the Kelowna Airport.

With an ever-evolving creative path, David’s latest projects include a children’s publication, and creating new pictographs for his language. In the future, he would like to create a mural of picto-tiles for schools.

This show will run from June 1st to 30th.

Alternatives A-Z – Part 6

Franklin D. Roosevelt Trees really do have healing powers, they release antimicrobial essential oils that not only protect the trees, but protect us as well. As children we instinctively understood that being in a forest, or in the company of a stately Red Cedar or a *solitary Oak made us feel better, healthier, more peaceful and somehow at one with the world. Tree medicine is not new, evolutionary biologist Edward Wilson maintained that people evolved to love all forms of life and the web of interconnectedness evident everywhere in nature.

In 1982, the Japanese government urged its citizens to make use of the country’s woodlands for therapy, a concept known as shinrin yoku or forest bathing. Research into the medicine of trees blossomed after forest therapy began in Japan. A study done by Dr. Qing Li1 in 2005 took 12 healthy middle-age men from on a three day on a “forest-bathing trip.” The participants’ reported feeling better, sleeping longer, and enjoyed these and other positive effects for weeks. Being with trees had significant advantages. When Dr. Li measured the men’s heart rate, blood pressure, adrenaline and cortisol levels before, during and after the trip the results were encouraging. Forest bathing had reduced stress hormone production, lowered blood pressure

and heart rate, suppressed the sympathetic “fight or flight” system, and enhanced the parasympathetic “rest and recover” system. Interested in Forest bathing? 2 The hands, arms, feet and legs were also divided into five zones each. From 1915 into the early thirties the subject of zone therapy was controversial but met with a certain amount of success from doctors and dentists as a form of pain relief or analgesia.

Dr. Joe Shelby Riley further developed zone therapy by adding eight horizontal divisions to the zones of the feet and hands. This was the beginning of reflexology as it is known today—that is, reflexes found on the feet and hands that follow the anatomy of the body.

Eunice D. Ingham, who worked with Dr. Riley in the 1930s, continued to refine and improve his work. From her first book, Stories the Feet Can Tell (1938) she was encouraged to take her methods to the public and non-medical community. Ms. Ingram’s major contribution to working with reflexes was to prove that alternating pressure, rather than having a numbing effect, stimulated healing.

She lectured and traveled back and forth across the United States for forty years, and is largely credited with developing Foot Reflexology as taught today in most massage schools. *Each oak leaf absorbs CO2 and releases Oxygen.

240 pounds of Oxygen are released each year from one oak tree, enough for a family of four people. Carbon is retained in the tree structure as it grows, making oak a Carbon neutral crop. Oak roots bind soil together, preventing erosion and desertification. They draw water through the soil, keeping it moist and bound together, providing ideal conditions for other plants.

A mature oak can draw 50 gallons of water each day, helping sustain the local water cycle.

Recipes Past Anise and Poppy Present Seed Shortbread

I don’t know about you, but I’ve often looked at a recipe and wondered, “What the heck is anise, anyway?”

So, before we tackle the recipe, let’s take a look at this mysterious ingredient.

Anise (also called aniseed or sweet cumin) belongs to the Apiaceae family, which includes carrots, celery and parsley. The plant’s leaves and roots are edible, but it’s best known for its small, brown seeds. They look very similar to fennel seeds, although they are significantly smaller.

Like anise, fennel is also from the Apiaceae family, making it related to carrots, dill and anise. Fennel grows into an edible vegetable, and its fronds look almost exactly like dill. The seeds have a sweet, licorice flavor that’s more robust than anise. It’s a popular component in sausage making, and chai teas.

Anise seeds can be used whole, made into extracts, or ground into a powder. They have a sweet, fragrant aroma with a strong, licorice-like taste. Anise is commonly confused with star anise because of the similarity in name. Although star anise and aniseed have one word in common, they couldn’t be more different.

Star anise is the fruit of a small evergreen tree in the magnolia family, and is most often found in Chinese Five-Spice blend. It’s much more intense and pungent than aniseed. Not recommended for substituting in this recipe!

INGREDIENTS: • 1 ½ cup/375 mL flour • 1 cup/250 mL crispy rice cereal • ½ cup/125 mL confectioners’ sugar • ¼ teaspoon/1.2 mL salt • 1 tablespoon/15 mL poppy seeds • ½ teaspoon/2.5 mL pure Anise extract

• 1 cup/250 mL (2 sticks) butter cut into 16 pieces HOW TO: Combine flour, rice cereal, confectioners’ sugar, salt, and poppy seeds with 3-4 pulses in food processor.

Add extract and butter, several pieces at a time, pulsing until dough starts to come together. Spread dough into ungreased 13 x 9 inch/33 x 23 cm baking pan.

Bake in 350F/180C oven 20-25 minutes or until pale golden brown. Cool completely on wire rack before cutting into 24 rectangles. p.s. if you happen to lose this recipe, or would like it in French, look for it on the back of the box of our Pure Anise Extract.

Photos and Memories From The Lumby Museum

Around 1900, Bill Fraser walked across Canada and with winter approaching, decided to build a cabin near Margie Lake in what is now known as Monashee Provincial Park. Bill eventually built Fraser Lodge on a rise overlooking Sugar Lake. The Lodge was a 3-story cedar log building with a wide wraparound veranda. Bill guided many artists and outdoor enthusiasts into the majestic mountains surrounding Sugar Lake. As one of the first known visitors to the area, the highest mountain (elevation 8789 feet or 2679 metres) was named for Bill Fraser on August 10, 1928. In the early 1960's a government surveyor named Fostall renamed the mountain to Mt. Fostall.

Notes From the Lumby Public Market WOW! What a fantastic day this past Saturday at the Lumby and District Public Market.

We had 21 Vendors, and about 180 patrons coming through at different times. There were so many different items at the market, and of course everyone enjoyed the Bannock.

Say hello to the Vendor Of The Week: This is their first year at our market, and they have some pretty cool items you need to check out. Their names are Renee and Kodiak. Their business name is HeadSpace Babes. (Even the name is pretty cool.) They had lived in Lumby awhile back, they moved away for a short time then moved back to Lumby in 2019 (welcome back) in 2018 they had created their business and website with some Essential Oil Rollers. In 2019 after returning to Lumby Renee and Kodiak expanded their business to include other local small businesses as a way to grow their business and support other artists and entrepreneurs. They currently have products made by Lumby or Okanagan small businesses. As of right now, they have some bath bombs that smell di-

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our Dad, who after a long and courageous battle with cancer, passed away in his home with his children by his side at the age of 82 years.

Survived by his loving wife Vera, who were married for 63 years. Robert is also survived by his children Terry (Pauline), Wendy (Mike), Dawn (Brian), Barbara (Pat), Rusty (Sheila), and Stacey (Roger) as well as thirteen grandchildren, twenty-two great grandchildren, and three greatgreat grandchildren.

Bob is predeceased by his son, Robert Lyle (Robbie) in 2003, and his brother William Schunter (Bill) in 2015.

Bob, (also known to some as RJ) lived all his life in Lumby, B.C. Lumby has lost a logging icon who had made a lifetime career in the forest industry. His crew meant a lot to him. Most remained good friends even after retirement or moving on. He leaves behind a legacy for future generations.

Bob’s faithful four legged friend ‘Sofie’ who was always at his side, will miss him terribly.

The family would like to thank his many friends who visited him, some traveling from afar to lift his spirits and reminisce about old times. He cherished those visits.

Thank you to those who dropped off food, flowers and cards or just to offer support to all of us. And to the Cancer Clinic/Palliative Care nurses who were always very helpful and kind. Special thanks to Gwen.

Bob was cremated and there will be no funeral services because of current restrictions.

A private family gathering will be held at a later date.
