Notes From the Lumby Public Market The second week of the Lumby and District Public Market was great, the sun shined all day, and no wind, Hooray!

While at the market, people sometimes get hungry.

We have a cure for that. Vanessa and her friends Emily, (pictured) and Zach (not in the photo) will fry you up some very tasty Bannock.

Bannock is a very traditional Native American Fry Bread. There are many variations of this Fry Bread recipe in many different cultures.

Julie Wilding, who had been a famous figurehead at the market for over 20 years had perfected the recipe with a combination made from simple ingredients to make her famous Bannock. You can eat this Plain, with Cinnamon Sugar, or with Jam. (by the way, if you haven't tried it yet, all of these ways are great.)

In around 2016, Vanessa had started helping Julie out with Bannock, in 2019 Julie retired sharing her secret recipe with Vanessa, who now will feed the hungry market goers her lovely treat.

I have a few and know of a few more. Doing some research I now have a fair list and of course some interesting facts. The use of flowers in salads, soups, jams, teas, deserts and cocktails has been around since the Roman times and is used widely in Chinese, Middle East and Indian cultures. However not all flowers are edible and one should make sure that the flower they are choosing is in the edible category as some flowers are poisonous and the pollen from some can cause allergic reactions. Flavours vary from spicy to peppery like the nasturtium to a cucumber like flavour to some like the squash flower that can be sautéed in butter and tastes like artichoke. All flowers that are edible should be picked early in the day when their water content is the highest, gently washed and placed on paper towel then refrigerated soon after until you intend to use them. Be sure to ingest flowers that have not been exposed to pesticides. Besides the above mentioned plants there is also flowers from the Fuchsias, Apple, Tulip, Dianthus, Chrysanthemum, Yuc-

Vegan vs Carnivores

There are several health consequences and unsustainable factors to consider that are tied to all diets.

Health consequences

Vegans Very often Micronutrients are of special concern including; Iron, zinc, calcium, vitamins B-12, D, and long-chain n-3 (omega-3) fatty acids omega-6. Unless vegans either supplement or eat adequate amounts of fortified foods and or know how to make foods more bioavailable, they could be at risk for deficiencies, that can have mild to severe consequences. Vegans however, get more than adequate other vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients as well as Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) shortchain omega-3 fatty acid (18:3n-3), that are crucial to overall health. But diets that do not include fish, eggs, or sea vegetables (seaweeds) generally lack the longchain n-3 fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA; 20:5n-3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA; 22:6n-3), which are important for cardiovascular health as well as eye and brain functions. ALA can only minimally convert into EPA and DHA. Carnivores There have been lots of correlations with meat eaters and heart disease as well as high blood pressure or cholesterol and certain cancers. Interestingly enough it’s not the meat itself that is causing the negative health consequences rather how it’s prepared, processed or because of the lack of other foods crucial to our diets, mainly vegetables and other plant-based foods. Seniors’ Corner Bird Watching

Bird watching is a lovely hobby or pastime.

There are 451 species of birds that inhabit the skies and wild spaces of Canada. Birds are not only beautiful, but they also help our ecosystem by reducing insect populations and pollinating plants and dispersing seeds.

And don’t forget Vulture like birds, crows and carrions help clean up messes and things left by humans and microorganisms.

This hobby isn’t expensive and you can do it close to home. You could use a field guide to help you identify the birds you’ve seen. A waterproof notebook, and binoculars can be helpful or even take you to the next level of birding. Birds can be seen in green spaces, creeks (any open body of water) or even a reedy area.

Once you have found a space to explore, take your time. Using the four steps suggested by the Audubon Society: STOP, focus on your task at hand, turn off your car or put away your electronics and clear your mind. LOOK, watch those perch areas on trees, fences, and even power lines. Look up in the sky for Red Tailed Hawk or a Bald Headed Eagle. Scan slowly

as you don’t want to miss anything. Look at the sand along the shoreline for birds (sandpipers). LISTEN, you may hear the tap tap tapping of a woodpecker or the call of a loon on the lake. Have you heard pheasants making a calling noise similar to a rooster in the morning and at dusk. Listen for the beautiful songs of a Red winged black bird perched on a cattail or a soggy roadside. REPEAT, after you have studied the area, carry on to another area.

If you don’t know what type of bird you see, take notes, what size or shape is the bird (long legged, perching like, tree hugging type, etc). Are there any particular markings or colors? Where did you find it? Was it in a marsh or a tree top? Did you hear it sing?

Some common birds in our area are: Hummingbirds, Robins, Canada Geese, Herons, Northern Flickers, Black Capped Chickadees, Steller’s Jay (similar to the Blue Jay), American Gold Finch, Starlings, Magpies, Sparrows, Quails, Mallard ducks and of course many more. What have you seen or heard?

Verle Moore was born June 18, 1895 and came to Lumby to teach primary school in 1940. She was married to Tom Moore in 1917 and had 2 children Terry (born 1918) and Thomas (born 1919). Her classroom was always filled with interesting things hens, chicks, rabbits, turtles, gardens and all things "art" - anything that would interest her students. She was instrumental in forming the Lumby Art Group, the Lumby Golf Club and the Lumby Curling Rink. She died in 1991 and rests in the Lumby Cemetry.

This is a column meant for fun and some information About myself: I am a Freelance Photographer you often see me on the side of the road or in various places taking photos of different things animals, birds, places, people etc. l have lived in Lumby just over 8 years,you have seen my photos in the newspaper (Lumby Valley Times) and once in awhile in the Vernon Morning Star, and the Lumby Art Gallery. Photography is my passion. Disclaimer: The information on some of my photos that I write about a lot of times come from the Internet or books I research them, hopefully the facts are as close to the truth as I can come.

Queen Of The Climbers Another of my Favorite Flowers: Okay I know you must be thinking " she has another favorite flower, I thought the other one was?" Sure it was, they all are.

That's why I have them in my gardens. I just love all the flowers in my gardens, and some that have not even reached my gardens yet but hopefully will one day.

But here it is The Clematis, also known as The Queen Of the Climbers: beautiful right.

Lots of gardeners love this fairly hardy plant, with over 300 species of the buttercup family , it can grow in vines, climbing and then climbing some more and then there are some of the species that will grow in a shrub form. If they are climbers remember to have a trellis, fence, a building or whatever to help them climb without falling over and breaking So many wonderful colors to choose from. Whites, Pinks, Reds, Purples, Blues, Tri-colors, Etc. This versatile flower also comes in different shapes as well, there are Tubular, Flat Discs that are opened, and

Bell Shaped. They also come in different sizes, some are very tiny flowers, about an inch, while other plants have larger flowers which can go up to about 5 inches.

They can grow in height from 3 feet to about 20 feet, some are even taller. No matter which color, shape or size you choose, they are all awesome.

Clematis that love the sun, but be sure to cover the root area to keep them cool, as although the plant loves the sun it does not do well if the roots get hot. You can plant small perennials to shade the roots, I use decorative white rock, keep this plant in well drained soil that is moist.

If you look inside a Clematis you will see long feathery seed heads, these

are referred to by some people as " Old Man's Beard."

People have been known to make beautiful wreaths out of the Clematis flower with their vines being so durable and flexible they bend easily.

A long time ago people thought that the leaves of the Clematis could cure the disease Leprosy.

The hollow stems were smoked by some cultures.

There are some Clematis that have been known to grow in the same spot for about 25 years.

Call For Entry: Local First Nations and Metis Artists for June 1 In honour of our upcoming guest artist, David Wilson Sookinakin, The Lumby Village Gallery is putting out a call for entry for local First Nations and Metis artists from all age groups. This is an opportunity to show a diverse range of artwork and craft from our own community, and to express yourself in your own unique way.

If you have a piece of artwork that you would like to share in the show, please come into the Monashee Art Gallery on or before May 31st and fill out the applicable forms.

Donna Easto, Traditional Herbalist, Certified Herbal Educator The Medicine Wheel Medicine Wheels are depicted in many ways– through various forms of artwork or as an impressive stone construction on the land. Used by generations of Native American tribes for guidance on health, healing and lifestyle, it traditionally embodies the Four Directions, as well as Father Sky, Mother Earth, and Spirit Tree (usually the Red Cedar on the West Coast). In the simplest terms, it’s a visual representation and guide for the cycles of life. Not all First Nations and tribes interpret the significance and the use of the Wheel in the same way. This article briefly discusses one I’m most familiar with, the Ojibwe/ Anishinabe Medicine Wheel. All share in common a circular movement, typically in a sun-wise direction, moving from East (Spring) to North (Winter).

Spring/Ziigwan (the element is earth, the first creation, and the colour is red), this quadrant speaks to nutrition, exercise, personal hygiene and setting healthy boundaries. Summer/Niibin (the element is air, the colour is yellow). The life stage is youth and the focus is on emotions, how to deal with them in healthy ways, and how to seek help when needed.

Autumn/Dagwaagin (the element is water, the colour is black), the life stage is adult. It’s a time of introspection. Have we taught our children well? Have we developed and modelled the morals and values that honour our spirituality? Are we a credit to our family and our people? Winter/Biboon (the element is fire to keep us warm and the colour is white), it’s a

cold time, the earth lies dormant and the stage of life is the Elder. Our circle is completed; we have passed down our knowledge to our children and grandchildren in the hope they honour the teachings of the Medicine Wheel and will live a full and balanced life.

There are many books and websites for adults and children interested in First Nations topics, you’ll find a wide variety and a virtual classroom at https//medicinewheel.education (Victoria, B.C.) Cedar Medicine Cedar is one of the four sacred medicines given to First Nations by the Creator. It is used to purify dwellings, during fasting a circle of cedar surrounds the faster’s home, and in sweat lodge ceremonies cedar branches cover the floor. Western Red Cedar was, and still is, used in the creation of medicine healing totems, symbolizing good health and healing. In appreciation for the sacrifice the tree is making for mankind, a solemn ceremony is held to bless the tree and to give thanks for its sacrifice and its powerful medicine: Cedar is a powerful antimicrobial. Recipes Past and Present

Hungering for garlicky chicken wings but find your garlic bin is bare? Don’t despair, there are garlic substitutes galore: flaked, powdered, granulated, and my son’s favourite frozen garlic cubes.

This recipe is for baked wings, so begin by preheating your oven to 425F. Ingredients • 50 split chicken wings, about 10 lbs (there are 4-5 chicken wings to a pound, most folks eat 6 wings, so this recipe will feed about 9 people) • ¼ cup flour • Salt and pepper to taste • 1 teaspoon EVO Sauce • ½ cup local honey

promotes immune function through helping white blood cells to work better. The leaves have long been a popular internal and external medicine for painful joints among Coastal Native Peoples. They have also been infused for cough medicine, tuberculosis and fevers. The leaves make wonderful incense and are used in smudging for purification. They’re anti-fungal for skin and nail fungus. The tincture, infused oil or salve can be used topically and should be applied 2-3 times a day until a week after the fungus disappears. You can also soak your feet in cedar tea by steeping a cup of dried cedar leaves in about 10 cups of hot water.

Let the tea steep until it is warm, and then place it in a bowl or basin large enough for your feet. Soak for 10-15 minutes. Cedar steams a few times a day can help to clear respiratory infections.

Honey Garlic Chicken Wings • 4 tablespoons soy sauce • 4 fresh garlic cloves, crushed • 1 tablespoon finely diced ginger • ½ teaspoon chili flakes or powder • 1/3 cup of water • 1 teaspoon corn starch

How To 1. Dry wings by dabbing with paper towels.

2. Toss wings with flour, salt and pepper. Shake off any excess flour and brush with EVO. 3. Line baking pans with foil and then top with parchment paper. Place wings on pans and bake for about 35 minutes, turn them at 20 minutes and check on doneness 4. Make sauce by combining ingredients in a small pan and bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer until slightly thickened (coats the back of a spoon) about 10 minutes. Make just before the wings are ready.

5. Working quickly, get the wings out of the oven and

place in a bowl, pour the sauce on, and toss to coat.

This works best if both wings and sauce are hot.

6. Serve immediately, or if you like them crispy, return to oven for about 10 minutes, turning after 5 Alternative, Skip The Hot Sauce • After baking the wings, if you wish to skip using the hot sauce, it’s super easy to make a dipping sauce by combining an organic dip mix with sour cream or dairy free yoghurt I’m sure you’ve got a recipe to share in this space. The BC Cone Zone campaign, now in its 11th year, sets out to remind drivers, employers, and workers to do their part to prevent injuries and deaths of roadside workers in the Lumby Valley and other communities in the Regional District of North Okanagan.

Roadside work is a dangerous job.

Between 2011 and 2020, 12 roadside workers were killed and 207 were injured in B.C. Last year, 23 workers were injured because of being hit by a motor vehicle.

The risks to roadside workers are more prevalent in the summer months as roadside work increases at this time of year and traffic levels typically rise.

The campaign reminds drivers to slow down when approaching a Cone Zone and to pay attention to instructions from traffic control persons, temporary road signs, and traffic control devices.

In addition, under the “Slow Down, Move Over” law, drivers should be prepared to reduce speed and if safe to do so, move over to an open lane when approaching a vehicle with flashing amber, red, or blue lights (tow, fire, police, ambulance).

Cone Zones are work areas set up by roadside workers to protect themselves and the driving public. Road-maintenance crews, tow truck operators, first responders, municipal workers, traffic control persons, construction crews, and other roadside workers all depend on drivers to respect the Cone Zone to

keep their workplaces safe.

Employers have a legal responsibility to ensure the health and safety of their workers and contractors along BC’s roads and highways, including: • Ensuring their workers understand the hazards related to working at the roadside.

• Providing their workers with training, equipment, supervision and resources to help keep them safe.

Roadside workers can work safely by: • Knowing how to identify hazards and assess risks.

• Following safe work procedures, including work zone set-up and take-down.

• Wearing appropriate high-visibility clothing and other PPE. • Reporting unsafe work conditions to their supervisor.

Railway yards, train tracks, tunnels and bridges are private property. Walking or biking along railway tracks or taking a shortcut across tracks is dangerous and illegal, and trespassers could face a fine or worst it could cost them their life. CN Police will be on patrol and wants to send a strong safety reminder not to trespass on railway tracks or property.
