Just for Fun

A bus full of ugly people had a head on collision with a truck. When they died, God granted all of them one wish. The first person said, “I want to be gorgeous.” God snapped his fingers and it happened. The second person said the same thing and God did the same thing. This want on and on throughout the group. God noticed the last man in line was laughing hysterically. By the time God got to the last ten people, the last man was laughing and rolling on the ground. When the man’s turn came, he laughed and said, “I wish they were all ugly again.”

A husband and wife were driving through Louisiana. As they approached Natchitoches, they started arguing about the pronunciation of the town.

They argued back and forth, then they stopped for lunch. At the counter, the husband asked the blonde waitress, “Before we order, could you please settle an argument for us? Would you please pronounce where we are very slowly?” She leaned over the counter and said, “Burrr-gerrr Kiiing.”

A proud and confident genius makes a bet with an idiot. The genius says, “Hey idiot, every question I ask you that you don’t know the answer, you have to give me $5. And if you ask me a question and I can’t answer yours I will give you $5,000.”

The idiot says, “Okay.” The genius then asks, “How many continents are there in the world?” The idiot doesn’t know and hands over the $5. The idiot says, “Now me ask: what animal stands with two legs but sleeps with three?” The genius tries and searches very hard for the answer but gives up and hands over the $5000. The genius says, “Dang it, I lost.

My Story I used to ask myself this question which would sometimes trouble my mind. What is the meaning of life ; why am I so blind?

Do we live and die and that’s it or is there a reason why I’m here; I didn’t do this very often cause it would lead me into fear.

My dad got a letter from his sister saying she got ‘saved’. Saved from what I wondered, maybe I need saved too; but I didn’t know what it meant or what I had to do.

I got a bush job for a sawmill not far from our town; crew were really nice guys who didn’t fool around.

One day the foreman told me the reason I was there; he said “ Jesus wants to save you if you should really give a care”. I said I’d think about it if I knew what to do. He said it’s not church or religion or an organization, too. Then he went on to tell me what I had to do.

Jesus died as a sacrifice for everybody’s sin and they will receive eternal life if they will only let Him in. It’s

a personal relationship with Jesus who gave His life for you; ask him to forgive your sins and He’ll come into you. I did it as he told me, what a load came off my mind. I was born again and was no longer blind.

He told me to get a Bible and read it daily, too and get a Christian friend to baptize me, was all I had to do.

That was 48 years ago now and the Word’s my daily bread, as I continue to grow, and keep my spirit fed. Al quoted John 3:16 when he told me what to do and I learned that God is Love so I’ll quote it hear for you. For God so loved the world that He gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.Vs.17 too, for God did not send His son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through Jesus would be saved. We’re in a battle and in a harvest please give me a call anytime.

Lyme Disease With the arrival of spring and warmer weather the Canadian Lyme Disease Foundation (CanLyme) is hoping you will give some consideration to the spread of Lyme disease and the ticks that carry it.

May is Lyme disease awareness month.

Reliable statistics are not yet available in Canada but a recent American study by the U.S. Centers For Disease Control and Prevention increased their estimates of infection to 476,000 people per year. That easily makes Lyme the most prevalent vector-borne disease on this continent.

Geneticks is a private laboratory in Ontario and, with the financial assistance of CanLyme, has developed interactive tick maps that include data such as infection prevalence, seasonal tick activity, and regional species composition. It's a first of its kind service in Canada.

"The Geneticks Statistics Center is a public resource designed to provide user-friendly access to tick and tick-borne data collected throughout Canada," said Justin Wood, CEO Geneticks.

Wood unveiled his interactive tick tracking service on the CanLyme sponsored podcast, Looking at Lyme. Host Sarah Cormode contracted Lyme disease a decade ago in Victoria and has been speaking with the world's leading Lyme disease experts on the CanLyme podcast.

"It's been a real educational journey for me talking to people all over the world about Lyme disease and treatment," says Cormode. "We're just getting a handle how fast Lyme is spreading and the Geneticks statistic center is a tremendous help".

The Statistics Center will be updated annually to reflect on-going changes in tick populations and tickborne pathogen distribution in Canada.

The first Lumby and District market of the year was a great success even though the weather was breezy and cold. I had to move my cucumber plants back into my vehicle by mid morning as they were definitely in distress with the conditions we were subjected to.

Thankfully they bounced back to good health quite quickly after their move. It was great to see so many old faces even if only above their masks and several new people including some newcomers from the coast that are already in love with Lumby and area! Welcome! One woman who loves her basil spoke to me about an on going problem in Lumby that destroys her plants continuously. That is the Earwig and they continue to be a big pest in the Lumby area.

I remember when I was young, lol, seeing a show called Night Gallery, where these nasty little beasts crawled into someone’s ear and was able to burrow into their brain. This of course was fiction but still a terrifying idea and it stuck as people still believe this is possible. The name Earwig is from an unknown source having little or nothing to do with ears. So what are these little pests and how can we control them and the damage they cause?

Earwigs can overwinter in the soil and other, convenient to them, dark, moist areas. The female lays her 20 to 60 eggs in late spring and the offspring hatch in a week and wait in the nest doing their multiple transitions to adulthood before they too are out and feasting by early summer. They can survive the cold winters to repeat this process in a horrendous, destructive cycle. The adult male and female can be distinguished by their feelers, the male having long curved ones and the female shorter and straight ones.

They are non poisonous and non venomous, they do not sting or bite but can pinch with the little pincers on their body which can hurt but they are not a risk to health or safety. They can fly but prefer to scuttle along the ground and are quite fast. They send out pheromones to attract others and hide in dark, cool places and come out at night. They can enter your home through cracks in foundations and will get into anything they need to survive. And believe it or not

they can be beneficial! As well as eating decaying plant matter in the garden they are carnivorous and eat aphids, slug eggs and other insect larva as well as eating each other.

Prevention and control is considered a community or neighbourhood effort. The use of rolled wet newspaper or containers placed upside down with wet straw in them can be effective as well. The paper from take out food also works well as they are carnivorous so the scent remaining in these wrappers is attractive. My friend tried vegetable oil in containers but had no luck but after more research It is suggested to use something like sardine cans with traces of the oil left in it. Bury these up to the lip of the can and in the morning take the tins, newspaper, food wrap or wet straw and drop it into pails of soapy water. Use Diatomaceous Earth in your soil before you plant as this causes damage to their outer hard coating and they will dehydrate and die. Plant early in the spring (weather permitting) to allow the plants to gain some size and defence from these pests as they love seedlings and the young tender leaves of your vegetables and flowers. Note how they seem to be able to detect these from weeds! Be sure to clean up all dead leaves from your garden and lawn, under hedging and shrubs and of course from around the foundations of your home.

The next market is supposed to have a chance of rain but if the dry spring we have been experiencing is any indication I doubt that will be an issue. Hopefully it will be warmer and less windy. Many people have placed orders which I will gather and box to be picked up at the next market so if you are unable to come to the greenhouse you can certainly phone me and place an order to be picked up in Lumby on Saturday.

Seniors’ Corner Balance is Key

Balance disorder is what causes you to feel unsteady, lightheaded or as if the room is spinning.

One in three Canadians over age 65 will fall every year. Injuries from falls can change a senior's life in ways seniors fear most—isolation and loss of independence. Understanding balance disorders and fall prevention along with knowing when to get help can go a long way toward avoiding falls and the devastating consequences that may come with it.

Someone with a balance problem may walk unsteadily, fall sideways when standing or have trouble going up or down stairs. Here are some common symptoms that go along with a balance disorder: • Dizziness • Feeling as if you are going to fall • Visual problems • Confusion • Anxiety • Nausea The most common cause of balance disorder is a combination of factors that go along with aging. We know from studying the inner ear that the cells responsible for maintaining balance start to degenerate with age. Aging and the diseases of aging also affect vision and the bones and joints. Good balance requires that all these systems work together

"the labyrinth." It is a bony structure that contains fluid and the nerve cells for balance. If this organ becomes infected or inflamed, such as from a viral upper respiratory infection, it causes vertigo and loss of balance.

Meniere's Disease This is a condition in which the fluid inside the labyrinth increases. Meniere's disease affects both balance and hearing. Symptoms include hearing loss that comes and goes, a roaring sound and a sensation of fullness in the ears and vertigo.

Other Causes Certain types of medications, circulation problems, neurological diseases and arthritis in the neck can all be causes of a balance disorder.

The main symptom is a sudden attack of vertigo when you change your head position such as looking over your shoulder or rolling over in bed.

Interior Health Passes 335,000 Milestone In #Journey2immunity Campaign

Interior Health (IH) has administered approximately 335,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine throughout the Interior. Our #journey2immunity continues towards the goal of offering vaccine to every eligible person in IH. “Across Interior Health, hundreds of people attending their appointments at immunization clinics every day and emerging with a dose of vaccine that will protect them from serious illness or death by COVID-19,” said Interior Health president and CEO Susan Brown. “It’s uplifting to see the excitement of newly vaccinated people.”

The Interior’s vaccine rollout is a coordinated effort between Interior Health and the First Nations Health Authority. Together we have administered 320,237

first doses and 16,583 second doses of vaccine to people throughout the Interior region, for a total of 336,820 administered doses.

“I am happy to be hearing from people about their experiences at the clinics, which they describe as positive and well organized from start to finish. For that, we can thank our staff and the many volunteers across the region who are working hard to immunize people quickly and efficiently,” said Brown.

“I encourage everyone who has not yet registered for their vaccine to make it a priority today. Every person who gets immunized brings us one step closer to putting this pandemic behind us.”

This is a column meant for fun and some information About myself: I am a Freelance Photographer you often see me on the side of the road or in various places taking photos of different things animals, birds, places, people etc. l have lived in Lumby just over 8 years,you have seen my photos in the newspaper (Lumby Valley Times) and once in awhile in the Vernon Morning Star, and the Lumby Art Gallery. Photography is my passion. Disclaimer: The information on some of my photos that I write about a lot of times come from the Internet or books I research them, hopefully the facts are as close to the truth as I can come.

A Flower Easily Grown Here is a dainty looking flower, but actually fairly hardy called Columbine, that has over 60 species, and if the Hybrids are included in the count, then there are so many more. It comes in a huge variety of colors, Reds, Purples, Yellows, Pinks, Whites etc. I have one of the plants and it is bi-color, some of the colors on one plant are a Dusty Rose, while the other one is a light Purple, so pretty.

Columbines which are from the Buttercup family have many different names: Aquilegia, Rocky Moun-

tain Columbine, European Columbine, Granny's Nightcap.

The Latin name for Columbine is Columbia this word means Dove-Like.

The name Aquilegia in Latin means Eagle, as the petals can look like Eagle Talons.

Columbines are perennial, and can be seen growing in Woodlands, Meadows, Rock Gardens, Containers, and in My Gardens. They are drought tolerant plants, blooming from late spring into early summer. They are bell shaped, they smell great, and the Hummingbirds love them, especially the Red colored ones.

They are very easy to grow from seed, although you have to wait about a year for them to grow from seeds, but don't worry as almost all stores that sell plants usually have a good supply of Columbine. They like cool weather, partial shade, and some fertilizer, with well drained soil. They have different sizes, some are smaller plants, some are larger, I have both. They can grow between 1-3 feet high, and about 1-2 feet wide.

Although some people say you can eat the Columbines you must be careful as it can be a toxic plant if ingested, it can cause diarrhea, and vomiting. When the Columbines season is over, cut the stalks that are left down to the ground, you will see them again in the late Spring.

Arts & Culture from the Edge

‘Nurturing a love for Nature’ Come join MAC as local artists of all ages and disciplines to share their nature themed art in our May show “Nurturing a love for Nature” running from Monday May 3 to Saturday May 29, 2021 in honor of Canadian artist and naturalist Robert Bateman as he celebrates his 90th birthday.

Visitors can also take home a piece of Bateman art of their own, MAC will be hosting a raffle for two limited edition signed Bateman prints and a Bateman art book. Cost of tickets $2 each or 3 for $5. Draw date May 29, 2021.

The Monashee Arts Council and Village Gallery are open Monday through Saturday, 10 am to 4 pm at 1975 Vernon Street (Highway 6) Lumby.

The Wave Remains The Monashee Arts Council (MAC), established in 1999 by a group of local artists and patrons, survived for years by organizing events (particularly a Lumby Days arts and craft show) until 2013 when a grant from the Regional District enabled the society to pay rent and hire a part time coordinator.

The Regional District continues to support MAC and this annual grant has been supplemented by project funding from the BC Arts Council. (For example, “The Land that Feeds Us” mural and the play “Moose under Coyote Sleeping”) However project grants and

the Village Gallery and Gift Shop with dedicated volunteers, supporting local artists while supplementing the rental costs of operating the MAC office.

A few days ago, with some sadness, the members of the Lumby Arts Co-op decided to dissolve the organization. It had been an ongoing struggle to keep the Gallery afloat and the onset of the pandemic tilted the balance. In dissolving, the co-op members were relieved to see that the Village Gallery could now be managed by the Monashee Arts Council and so all the Co-op assets were transferred to MAC. Many of the same artists are still involved, volunteering and organizing shows. The mandate to support local artists remains the same. However MAC management has meant that new activities are possible, for example we now have a tiny but exciting art supply corner and the capacity to make bulk art supply orders. We just completed a very successful photo competition with over eighty entries, making up in a small way for the lack of Lumby Days this year. Over the past year, Resiliency Funding from the BC Arts Council has made all the difference in maintaining the MAC presence in downtown Lumby. We are also pleased that once again the Regional District has renewed our funding.

Rhinovirus/Enterovirus

I’ve included several remedies for the common cold.

You may think it’s a purely winter misery...unfortunately not, and it’s often more miserable than a winter cold. Let’s take a look at two heavy hitters: Rhinovirus and Enterovirus. Despite their common features, these two groups of viruses have different characteristics. Rhinoviruses are restricted to the respiratory tract, whereas Enteroviruses primarily infect the gastrointestinal tract and can spread to other sites such as the central nervous system.

Rhinoviruses, among the most abundant viral infectious agents in humans, cause about 30 to 50% of common colds and are rampant during the spring.

Enteroviruses (Rhino’s kissing cousins) pack an extra punch in the warmest weather; they’re responsible for what is known as the “summer flu.” Along with the usual coughing, congestion and fever that these viruses can cause, Enteroviruses are also associated with a host of other nasty symptoms, including diarrhea, sore throat, rashes and body aches, to name a few. Hardy Enteroviruses can last longer than other viruses – meaning it might take you a little longer than expected to feel 100% again if you’re infected. We’re all too familiar with instructions on avoiding contact with viruses, so I won’t repeat them, but would add that controlling stress is essential*. Emotional stress weakens your immune system making it more likely that you’ll catch a cold. Here are a few helpful herbs for your medicine chest.

Gary Albert Mitten September 29, 1950 – April 20, 2021 It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we share the sudden passing of our dad, Gary Albert Mitten on April 20, 2021. Gary was born in Powell River September 29, 1950. Gary is survived by his children Michelle and Cameron, his grandchildren Breanna and Kristopher, his brother Robert (Pat), his nephews, his cousins, along with many friends. Dad’s dream was always to live high on top of a mountain away from the city life. After many years of working with the City of Vancouver, he retired to pursue his dream. Although dad did not live high on top of a mountain, he did find his piece of paradise in Lumby where he could live a more relaxed life with his dogs, raising chickens and simply enjoying the beauty that surrounded him.

Well, our market opened on Saturday as planned. We had quite a few vendors.

We had sunshine, then we had wind.

Wow did we ever have wind! But no tents were blown away and all the vendors were happy to be there. I noticed all the patrons that came to the market were happy as well. It was good to see you all again.

It's Okay To Not Be Okay

May 3rd – May 9th is Mental Health Week and the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP is encouraging everyone to take this time to prioritize your mental health and wellbeing, to support each other, and to promote good mental health in our community.

As we all try to balance and manage the stress in our lives, it’s important, we work collectively to support one other and to promote good mental health in our community. Mental health includes your overall psychological wellbeing, your feelings about yourself and others, as well as your ability to manage your feelings and deal with everyday challenges.

Our officers (as first responders), are called to assist those experiencing a mental health crisis with increasing frequency. Between January 1st, 2021 and May 1st, 2021, frontline officers from the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP Detachment attended over 287 calls for service directly related to an individual experiencing a mental health crisis or an interaction primarily driven by a mental health concern. Our goal, in any intervention, is for a safe resolution and through compassion, understanding, and empathy,

we are able to help those in times of vulnerability and uncertainty.

Police officers, and all first responders, are human and are not immune to the compounding psychological and emotional impact our involvement in these situations has on our health. Recognizing this has allowed us to start taking steps to prioritize the psychological health of our employees, to build resilience, and to advocate for the importance of a healthy mind.

At the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP, all employees are encouraged to have regular check-ins with a mental health professional, states Superintendent Shawna Baher, Officer in Charge of the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP. We want them to have someone in place, someone familiar, someone they can trust, should the need arise. All new members to the detachment are assigned a peer-to-peer mentor to ensure they are receiving any support they need and to help them establish good habits early on as they transition into their new career.
