Like any language, English has a lot of idiom-phrases that don’t make grammatical sense.

But that’s no excuse not to laugh at them.

Dolman Family It was great to read the small story on the Dolman family in the latest addition. I got to know the family, when after the North Okanagan Valley Gleaners got started, they began to donate produce for processing.

The Village of Lumby will arrange to install this bench in Arbour Park, near the gazebo and bandstand, close to the Mothers Day weekend.

Initially, we had planned a small dedication on May 8, however COVID restrictions have made it very difficult to meet as a group.

We encourage all to drop by and visit the new bench, when social distancing is not impacted: that means, random drop by, any day when you are in the area, to pay your respects.

What Do You Call It When Worms Take Over The World?…. Global Worming!

Cutworms

This has been an extremely busy week with delivering my plants to the Monashee Co-Op, preparing for the first Lumby and District Public Market and finishing some Mothers Day goodies as well as working in my yard. I was dismayed to find so many cutworms in my perennial beds, many more than I am used to seeing. Cutworms are the offspring of the Miller Moth and others which will lay their eggs on grasses and weeds in the fall and over winter or are laid in the early spring then hatch into this destructive pest that feed on new transplants of many plant plants like asparagus, beans, cabbage, carrots, celery, corn, lettuce, peas, potatoes, tomatoes and sunflowers to mention most of what you plant in the garden. Tomato, Peppers and Celery should be monitored until you harvest. The damage in my perennial beds seems minor but the worms are yet small but they will grow and devour until they dig down deeper into the soil and transform back into the moth. This they can do several times in the year, having an incubation period of 2 to 14 days depending on the species and the temperature this allows for up to 3 or 4 generations a year.

The summer hatching will climb up to feast on the top growth of your plants, others will burrow deeper to feast on roots. There are many species of the Cutworm but the one identifying aspect is that they curl into a C shape when disturbed, they are smooth skinned and hairless as well as they only feed at night and hide during the day. They can be many colours and range from 1eighth of an inch to 2 inches again depending on the variety. This curling trait is how they devour and kill tender seedlings and how they get their name as they tend to cut new seedlings off at ground level. It is best to get a handle on them while they are small as most damage will occur in early spring after

they hatch and while they are growing. They do have natural predators like Meadow Larks, Toads, Moles and Shrews, many of these you do not want in your garden. There are many things you can do to prevent and rid your garden of these pests. First is to be sure to rid your garden of plant refuse to remove all egg nesting sites as some of the moths can lay up to 600 eggs in a row. Weed and grass removal is very important as well, tilling deeply in fall and spring will expose the young worms to predators and death by exposure itself. Chickens will dig up and devour them and fertilize as well but that is not the easiest option for many. I use Diatomaceous Earth in my soil when I am transplanting my seedlings for market and this is both effective and inexpensive, it is safe when applied around the base of the plant but should not be sprinkled on the plant as it will work the same on pollinators and bees if they should come in contact with it, otherwise it is safe around any and all things we hold sacred. Other options include hand picking the beasts or placing cones of cardboard such as toilet paper rolls, plastic cut from soda bottles or tin foil placed about an inch deep around your transplants. A buffer of 3 to 4 feet of soil that will remain dry as a perimeter around your garden can help as well as planting Tansy among your plants. Putting toothpick on either side of your seedling can help as the Cutworm will not be able to curl around this additional diameter. You can also use crushed eggs shells around your plants which will help with slugs as well as add some calcium to the soil over time or wood ashes and chicken manure seem to be a repellent as well. Bacillus Thuringiensis sold as BT is also extremely affective, this is a natural soil born bacteria widely used since the 1950’s containing a spore and protein crystal that is toxic to

many pest like cabbage worm, tent caterpillars, potato beetles and Mosquitoes ( up to 95 to 100 percent within 24 hours) and many other leaf eating pest. It is harmless to birds, fish and mammals. This I am going to try in my perennial beds as I happen to have some.

Whether it’s bodyweight exercises, a few free weights, a band, or all 3 combined – any, or all, will deliver an efficient - high calorie burning workout -with low cost - and little space required. Living room, office, bedroom or even backyard, will do.

Bodyweight exercises when done regularly, has shown to be more effective than cardio for weight loss. Quick sets of exercises that focus on the full body, like - lunges, burpees, squats, crunches, and planks—can be very effective for building muscle and tone.

Add free weights for variety, or to certain bodyweight exercises once they become easy.

Free weights are readily available, easy to store and can be picked up relatively cheap, especially second hand. They can also be more beneficial than machines. Machines require you to sit down and lift weight within a limited range of motion (ROM), focusing on large muscle groups. By doing this, your flexibility decreases, and small stabilizing muscle groups are not incorporated, so chance of injury is more prevalent. When you work within a full ROM and use your big muscle groups along with small stabilizing muscle groups, not only will you be more balanced and less vulnerable to injury, but you will also find you tone up a lot faster, making you look leaner and thinner as opposed to bulkier and thicker. Free weights do exactly that as you must control your body to not wobble which incorporates stabilizer muscles and your core. You also can do a full natural ROM within an exercise, which allows for flexibility. Because so many muscles work all at once to do these tasks, you burn more calories per rep, than if you were on a machine.

Resistance bands take up even less space than weights and are easily portable. They are a great addition to any classic exercise and work especially well with bodyweight workouts. They can even add support, not just resistance, to help you work towards more difficult exercises. For example, they can assist you in a pull up, for that extra bit of help, until you build up enough strength to do 1 unassisted.

Resistance bands can also be easily incorporated if you find your weights are not heavy enough or too heavy for certain exercises. Weights rely on gravity for their pri-

mary resistance which can make some exercises difficult if you are not a well seasoned lifter. The bands resistance simply comes from the elasticity of the rubber itself and can be easier to control with certain movements. There are so many ways to create resistance needed for different muscles groups, by standing on the band, or wrapping the band, or using a door jam, without putting yourself into a position that might otherwise jeopardize your form. This is the reason why bands are so widely used by the elderly or people undergoing rehabilitation after an injury, as the strength and or balance required for the use of weights would be too compromising.

The type of equipment you have, or purchase isn’t nearly as important as being dedicated to developing an exercise routine and making it a habit. Being safe and with good form is also important.

This is a column meant for fun and some information About myself: I am a Freelance Photographer you often see me on the side of the road or in various places taking photos of different things animals, birds, places, people etc. l have lived in Lumby just over 8 years,you have seen my photos in the newspaper (Lumby Valley Times) and once in awhile in the Vernon Morning Star, and the Lumby Art Gallery. Photography is my passion. Disclaimer: The information on some of my photos that I write about a lot of times come from the Internet or books I research them, hopefully the facts are as close to the truth as I can come.

Holland's National Flower Tulips are another type of a Happy Flower, right along with the Sunflower.

Tulips belong to the Lily family ( I love Lilies) Tulips can grow in full sun or part shade. They are grown from bulbs that you would plant in the fall after the first frost, but before the ground freezes. When planting they should be spaced about 4- 5" apart while the depth of planting them should be about 6-8" plant with the pointy side up, side by side or a single row.

Tulips have over 150 species, with over 3,000 varieties. And the colors, wow what a variety of gorgeous

colors and shapes they have, They are a great flower in your garden, or cut to be in a vase for your table. If you cut your Tulips once in the vase they will continue to grow for about an inch.

The different colors of Tulips have different meanings: Red is for true love, Purple is for Royalty, and White is to say I'm sorry It is unfortunate that such a beautiful, hardy flower like the Tulip only lasts for about 3-7 Around 1593 the Tulip became the National Flowdays once it has opened in the Spring. er of the Netherlands.

Founder Dr. Samuel Hahnemann of Germany based his philosophy on the belief that the body heals itself following the ancient Law of Similars. You may know it as “like cures like,” in other words, something that brings on symptoms in a healthy person can— in a very small dose —treat an illness with similar symptoms by triggering the body’s natural defenses. Homeopathic remedies consist of severly diluted substances from plants, minerals, chemicals and animals that produce symptoms similar to the illness being treated. For example, the homeopathic medicine Coffea cruda, a dilution made from unroasted coffee beans, is used to treat shaking, agitation and insomnia, symptoms similar to those of caffeine over-consumption. Vaccines are sometimes compared to homeopathic nosodes (a homeopathic remedy often sold in pellet form said to be an alternative to vaccines) but while the theory behind both is similar the method of development and administration are very different and there’s no research to date proving their use as alternatives to vaccines.

‘Nurturing a Love for Nature’ – Connecting through nature ‘Nurturing a Love for Nature’, the latest show sponsored by the Monashee Arts Council, is on display now at the Village Gallery, 1975 Vernon Street, Lumby.

Collaborating with the Bateman Foundation, the Monashee Arts Council will be holding a raffle for two Bateman prints and a book of Bateman paintings.

As well as a display of various Robert Bateman prints and reference materials there will also be a wide selection of local art celebrating our connection with the natural world around us: quilts, photography, paintings in oil and acrylic, prints and 3D art show how our love of nature can inspire a range of responses.

Robert Bateman is perceived by many to be one of the voices of reason and hope for healthy, rejuvenated and creative engagement with the natural world.

Thus in honor of the Canadian Naturalist and Artists 90th birthday, the Monashee Arts Council has been distributing Bateman Foundation sketch books; a project encouraging artists of all ages to get out and connect with our surroundings.

Through his art Bateman shares with us ‘humanity’s relationship to the natural world’ MAC has invited artists of all ages and disciplines to share their

nature themed art in our May show “Nurturing a love for Nature” running from Monday May 3 to Saturday May 29, 2021.

Various Bateman art as well as other nature based learning materials will also be on display at the gallery during the show. If you haven't picked up your Bateman sketchbook yet, we still have some at the gallery to distribute for those who want to get out and draw in nature.

Connect In Nature. Inspire Our World. The Bateman Foundation’s mission is to promote the preservation and sustainability of the environment.

To achieve this goal, we maintain an art gallery to perpetuate, protect, enhance and promote the artistic and cultural legacy of nature-inspired artists, including Robert Bateman. We also support and develop educational programs relating to the environment and nature-inspired artists.

Campbell 1955 – 2021

With heavy hearts we announce the death of Scott Lee Campbell, who passed away on April 18, 2021 at the age of 65.

He is survived by his loving wife, Bonny Campbell, who forever holds her husband dear to her heart. He is also survived by his two wonderful daughters Annette Campbell Comeau (Marty Comeau) of Vernon, BC, and Laurie Gerlach (Jason Gerlach) of Lumby BC, and his five beautiful granddaughters: Mikayla Campbell, Marie Campbell, Desiree Gerlach, Danika Gerlach, and Hayden Gerlach.

He was a beloved husband, father, grandpa, uncle, and friend who will be remembered by all those he encountered. His kindness, stubbornness, and humour were his greatest traits, along with how he had always put others before himself. And of course, his love for spontaneous camping trips wherever the road leads with his wife, children, and grandchildren will be greatly remembered.

There will be no immediate service, but a private small gathering of immediate family will be held at a later date.

As an incentive to avoid these non-reusable propane cylinders, the RDNO is offering residents a rebate of up to $25 on the purchase of a propane tank adapter hose from a local retailer.

“A propane tank adapter hose makes it possible to connect refillable propane tanks to most tabletop gas stoves, grills and other portable propane appliances, which often have connectors that are limited to single-use propane cylinders. An adapter hose removes that limitation and makes the appliance compatible with the more environmentally friendly option of a refillable tank,” said Darren Murray, Environmental Coordinator, RDNO.
