Every year, Volunteer Canada dedicates a week in April to celebrating volunteers and encouraging more Canadians to get involved in their communities. This year, National Volunteer Week takes place from April 18 to 24, and the theme is The value of one. The power of many. If you want to volunteer, here’s where you can find opportunities in your area.

April 9. Thank you to the paramedics, firemen, nurses George Gatzke Fear mongering To the Editor, I used to work at the Kozy Motel and gas bar in Radium and many times, especially Sunday evenings, would have the hot pool to myself.

I loved the environment there and forget why I moved away. If I come again in the near future to the pool I won’t be wearing a coward mask as I am not subject to COVID anywhere, as my vaccination is Psalm 91. It can’t come anywhere near the pool there

as the atmosphere is totally free from any germs and is conducive to healing, not making sick. I’ve seen people come to Radium who did have some health issues and after a few days of going to the hot pool left and went home healed. The only thing that makes me sick is the lying newscasts that are blowing everything out of proportion.

Notes From the Lumby Public Market Hello Everyone: As you know our great market The Lumby and District Public Market will be opening on May 8 2021and it will run until Thanksgiving weekend 2021 at the Oval Park These are the dates we are planning, unless things and dates are changed by Dr. Bonnie Henry.

There has been some confusion on Facebook, let me clarify things for you.

We are still following the COVID 19 rules. You will still see pylons and sanitizers. Please follow the arrows. All vendors will have sanitizer at their tables, as well with sanitizing tables down the path where the pylons will be placed, All vendors will wear a face mask covering their mouth and nose, unless they have a piece of plexiglass between you and them. It is recommended that patrons wear a mask as well, but that is up to the individual person as we are outside.

Unless it becomes mandatory through Bonnie Henry and or Interior Health.

For the patrons please do not touch everything, if you do then use the sanitizers again that are provided. Do not hang around and chat for a long time, so that other patrons can go to a booth as well.

Do not come to the market if you are feeling unwell, or if you have been around someone lately that is not well.

By respecting these regulations will have a fun, and safe market for everyone.

Visitors To The Garden

From freezing cold to summertime hot in just one week. Amazing! This last week has been amazingly warm especially in the greenhouse. With that heat has come an amazing array of flying and crawling bugs.

The past week brought out a good variety of parasitic wasps that feed on aphids, spider mites and other small creatures and this is good. I have also seen the largest bumble bee that I have ever seen. It has a large orange band on its back as so I was able to identify it as a Orange Belted Bumblebee. It is huge! It is a ground nesting social insect and it only survives one season. Our pollinators are invaluable and this is the time of year when they are establishing their new colonies with the least amount of plants that are producing pollen. The Orange Belted Bumblebee is one of 250 species of Bumble Bee. The Queen when she comes out of hibernation starts her colony off with a few simple cells with several eggs in each. These will become her workers and the nursemaids for the future eggs she will lay. They do not swarm and rarely sting, however, their sting is one of the most painful stings you can receive and the swelling and irritation will last for days so don’t provoke them. They are one of our best pollinators but they have been endangered greatly by the loss of habitat, pesticides and disease. In the 1990’s it was decided by large greenhouse Tomato producers in the States to ship these bees to Europe to be bred in large quantities and then shipped back to the United States for use in their greenhouses. However as usual, best laid plans met with major problems in that they picked up some very communicable diseases which spread rapidly to other bumble bee colonies in the wild and there was mass die offs. I have never seen so many of them as this past few weeks so hopefully they will be a good source of pollination this year.

A friend in Lavington has spotted the first Humming birds of the season. I have polished off my feeders and they are hung anxiously awaiting the arrival of one of my favourite birds.

I have had several calls from people anxious to get their bedding plants. I will be accepting people again this year in the greenhouse by appointment and will have my plants in the Co-Op on Saturday the 1st of May. It is still way too early to put most of our bedding plants outside but I am aware that everyone is excited to get started! Next week I will have a large ad in the Lumby Valley Times with my list of plants available and prices. I will also have a good quantity of these plants at the Lumby and District Public Market on May 8th. Plenty of time to plant for the season.

Time now to plan, and prepare for the season ahead.

COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER INCOME TAX PROGRAM As happens every year, Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) wants to hear from YOU! The T-4 slips are coming in the mail. T-4’s will be issued to all persons who received “CERB”, “CESB”, “CRB”, “CRCB” or “CRSB” benefits in 2020. Seniors are receiving their Old Age Pension and Canada Pension slips; the banks are issuing their T-5’s for interest earned and RRSP/RRIF’s are being dealt with.

The Community Volunteer Income Tax Program is up and running again this year.

The deadline for filing is Friday, April 30, 2021. After that date, there are late filing charges assessed and if there are monies owing, interest charges may be applied. If you do not file your return, the GST and Child Tax Benefits (if applicable) may be interrupted/discontinued as well as other benefits you may have.

Hydration Awareness

It is the time of season where we start to venture outside more as we are getting our gardens ready, working on fences, sheds or just enjoying the outdoors, hiking, walking, jogging, cycling…. It is also time to be aware and be prepared for the suns heat.

Making sure we are using sunscreen, wearing light breathable clothing and making sure we stay hydrated. All these things can come upon us quickly. Here are some signs of dehydration.

Signs of dehydration: • puffiness • dark yellow and thick urine • dry mouth • dizziness • headache • dry skin • thirst, or thirst not being quenched.

• Sweet food cravings - the reason for this is that when the body is dehydrated it cannot absorb nutrients properly. The liver needs water to release energy, so the body responds by looking for a quick energy source – glucose (sugar), hence = the sweet cravings.

Here are a few standard rules you can adhere to, that will help keep you hydrated throughout the day: 8x8 rule: • 8oz of water x 8 times spread out throughout the day The Lumby Food Bank Society

When exercising strenuously or if you find yourself sweating a lot, add 8oz of water every 15 minutes as sweating will draw water out of the body.

If you find that your thirst is just not being quenched then your electrolytes may be unbalanced and adding in some electrolytes through supplementation like a sports drink, making your own electrolyte drink or eating certain foods can help.

20% of our water comes from food we eat and the other 80% is from a combination of what we drink.

Electrolyte balance is key to keeping you hydrated.

The 3 main electrolytes are sodium, chloride (often always found together as table salt) and potassium.

These are the main ones you will find in supplementation or sports drinks. The added salt and sugar in these drinks are because sodium requires glucose to be absorbed, which takes place in the colon, resulting in water re-absorption. Re-absorption is important otherwise mass amounts of water would be lost in the feces causing dangerous dehydration and diarrhea.

Potassium on the other hand, does the opposite, by letting water go, keeping this important balance.

Use these simple methods to try balance your electrolytes: 1. Eat high water content foods as, cucumbers, watermelon, cantaloupe, tomatoes and or strawberries, as they are 90% water and will have some

electrolytes too.

2. Drink 2 cups water with, juice from half a lemon, 2 tsp honey and 1/8 tsp salt 3. Blend watermelon chunks (1 cup), 1 cup water, 2 tsp maple syrup and 1/8 tsp salt.

4. Drink coconut water, this will have all you need 5. Mix 2 cups water with a ¼ cup of a sports drink should give you enough electrolytes you need, as these drinks are very high in all ingredients especially sugar.

Call for Artists; ‘Nurturing a love for Nature’ “Discovering the creative force within is one of the most magical and empowering moments that can be seen in a Nature Sketch session. Seeing a child have that ‘A-Ha’ moment – the moment they understand their own creative potential to connect with nature using a pencil and know that this creativity will serve them for the rest of their lives, is truly one of the best sights you will ever see.” – Robert Bateman Robert Bateman is perceived by many to be one of the voices of reason and hope for healthy, rejuvenated and creative engagement with the natural world. Thus in honor of the Canadian Naturalist and Artists 90th birthday, the Monashee Arts Council has been distributing Bateman Foundation sketch books; a project encouraging artist of all ages to get out and connect with our surroundings. Through his art Bateman shares with us ‘humanity’s relationship to the natural world’ and we invite artists of all ages and disciplines to share their nature themed art in our May show “Nurturing a love for Nature” from Monday May 3 to Saturday May 29, 2021.

So we invite you to submit your nature sketches either from your sketch book or any other nature pieces you have created recently or in the past. Submissions are limited to 3 pieces (all mediums welcome) per artist and need to be delivered to the gallery with application form by April 30th.

Memberships may be renewed/obtained at time of

delivery. MAC will need the following information for each piece of work: Title, Medium, Size, Price (if selling), Description (how, why, when or where), Name of Artist.

British Columbians Urged To Prepare For Spring Flood Season The risk of spring flooding is elevated in B.C. due to an above normal snowpack.

The entire province faces risk, particularly in parts of the Interior and the North. British Columbians are urged to follow all directions of local authorities and take steps to prepare for the possibility of flooding.

B.C.'s most severe floods usually occur in spring and early summer when melting snow and rain combine, but they can also be caused by storm surges, ice jams or damage to structures like dikes or dams.

Here are some tips to help you and your family prepare for potential flooding: • Protect your home: prepare for possible flooding of low-lying areas by moving equipment and other assets from these areas to higher ground, where possible. Clear perimeter drains, eavestroughs and gutters. Sandbags also help and can be made available through your local government.

• Create grab-and-go bags: assemble an individual grab-and-go bag for each member of your household with the essentials you will need if you are asked to evacuate.

• Recognize the danger signs: if you live near a waterway, a change in water colour or rapid change in water level (especially a drop) could indicate a problem upstream. Call your local fire, police or public works department immediately if

you suspect something out of the ordinary.

If you face a threatening flood situation, park vehicles away from streams and waterways, move electrical appliances to upper floors and make sure to anchor fuel supplies. Listen to local officials if you are asked to evacuate. In the event of flooding, here are some tips about what to avoid: • Steer clear of river shorelines: keep away from river edges and shorelines.

During periods of high flow, river banks may be unstable and more prone to sudden collapse. Stay well away and keep young children and pets away from the banks of fast-flowing streams and flooded areas or bridges.

• Do not drive through flood water: never attempt to drive or walk in flood water. Just six inches of fast-moving water can knock over an adult. Two feet of rushing water can carry away most vehicles, including SUVs and pickup trucks.

• Landslide risk: heavy rain and snowmelt may contribute to landslides and dangerous debris in creeks and waterways. Be safe and do not go down to watch the rushing water. If you notice trees beginning to lean or bend near your home, or cracks developing in the hillside, consult an

engineer or contact local authorities.

“I would like to thank everyone at the Vernon Jubilee Hospital who worked hard to contain this outbreak,” said Interior Health president and CEO, Susan Brown. “We are happy to see operations returning to normal and on behalf of everyone at Interior Health, send our condolences to the loved ones and caregivers of those who passed away.”

In total, four staff and 10 patients were connected to the outbreak, which was first declared on March 30.

Dr. Albert De Villiers, Interior Health chief med-

ical health officer, noted the work of hospital leaders and staff, as well as IH communicable disease specialists, to contain the outbreak and maintain services.

“I extend sincere appreciation for the efforts by the team who worked tirelessly to contain the outbreak.”

The surgical unit has re-opened to admissions and essential visitor regulations resume for all patients.

Although this outbreak is declared over, COVID-19 still circulates throughout Interior Health communities. It is essential that everyone continue to avoid social gatherings and limit socialization to their immediate household bubble, and follow public health guidelines to prevent the transmission of COVID-19.

Remember to: • Keep to your household bubbles and avoid social gatherings.

• Stay home when you are sick; get tested if you have any symptoms consistent with COVID-19.

• Practise physical distancing.

• Wear a mask and wash your hands often.

• Avoid non-essential travel.

These pure essential oils can be used to enhance beauty, health, physical and mental well-being, combat stress, fungi and bacteria, and boost the immune system. The most effective methods of introducing essential oils to the body are through massage and inhalation, accounting for its use in conjunction with other healing therapies such as massage, yoga and reflexology.

Some useful hints for using EOs in the home: Kitchen: place 5 drops of antibacterial lemon or tea tree oil on your dishcloth as you wipe down your counter. Insect stings: Bee, apply a cold compress of analgesic, antiseptic Chamomile essential oil as long as possible and apply 1 drop of Chamomile essential oil neat three times a day for two days. Wasp, wasp stings are alkaline so treat with apple cider or wine vinegar (1 tsp) and add 2 drops each of analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antiseptic Lavender essential oil and Chamomile essential oil. Mix well and apply to the area three times a day. Spider bites, in a teaspoon of alcohol dilute 3 drops of Lavender essential oil and 2 drops of Chamomile essential oil. Blend well and apply to the area three times.

Ayurveda is a very old and very complex healing system from India. It uses a “constitution model” to provide guidance regarding diet and lifestyle to maintain and improve bodily health. The three body types, or doshas, are Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Each type has unique characteristics. The Vata dosha consists of the elements of space and air, the Pitta dosha of fire and water, the Kapha dosha of water and earth. For a complete harmonious living environment, it is necessary to have these five elements in balance. One dosha is usually more dominant and guides the way to a lifestyle that suits you best. You may also have a second dominant dosha. An equal blend of all three, known as Tri-doshic, is rare. Dosha type is determined by our "natural state"— what we were born with: hair, stature, eye colour, as well as inherent personality and characteristics. You might be creative, fast, wiry, light, cold and dry like Vata; laid-back, soft, heavy, slow and "chill" like Kapha; or have the intense, fiery nature of Pitta in both body and mind. The Ayurvedic practitioner will focus on you as a person rather than your ailments, and make recommendations on food, exercise, medical treatments, environment, and even career choices based upon your prakriti (body type).

Recipes Past and Present

Biofeedback involves the use of an electronic monitoring device to collect information on numerous physiological systems. Electrodes are connected to your skin to pick up information on functions such as heart rate, blood pressure, muscle tension, brain wave activity, and skin temperature. The information is converted into signals and the biofeedback practitioner will assess the results and train you to alter or slow down the signals through techniques such as controlled deep breathing, mindfulness meditation, progressive muscle relaxation and guided visualization. A biofeedback session typically lasts about 50 minutes.

• 1 tsp/5 mL Hot Pepper Sauce • 1 tbsp/15 mL Organic Cilantro Leaves • 1 tbsp/15 mL oil • 1 (16 oz/454 g) can black beans, drained and rinsed • Freshly-ground Organic Mediterranean Sea Salt Grinder • Juice of half a lime (optional) Directions Combine all ingredients; refrigerate for at least 4 hours before serving.

True Leaf Receives Preliminary Subdivision Approval For The Okanagan’s First Cannabis Business Park True Leaf Brands Inc. (“True Leaf” or the “Company”) (CSE: MJ) (OTC Pink: TRLFF) (FSE: TLAA) has received preliminary subdivision approval from the Village of Lumby for a first-of-itskind Cannabis Business Park in the Okanagan Valley.
