1. Alphabet comes from the first two letters of the Greek alphabet: alpha + beta.

2. Computer has been used to refer to a person since 1613, to a machine since 1869 and to an electronic device since 1946.

New Trail Society Formed If you love hiking, biking, and walking the trails in and around Lumby we want you to know about an exciting new volunteer group that has just formed! We are the Monashee Trail Society and we’re excited to create an active group for all ages. We hope you’ll join us by becoming a member.

Our purpose is to create, maintain and promote a system of well designed, accessible, non-motorized trails throughout the region to foster appreciation, education, protection and enthusiasm for the natural world around us in collaboration with Indigenous, local and government organizations.

Because we’re just getting started, we’re holding a membership drive. A family membership is just $20, adults $10, seniors $5, and under 18s are free. Membership forms can be printed from https://www. facebook.com/Monashee-Trail-Society or at Lumby

Spring Is Here And I Am So Excited I Wet My Plants!

I know that it has been forecast to be a cooler spring but this is above and beyond the norm. I watched with nearly tear filled eyes as a few flakes fell the other day out here on the farm and was distressed to hear it was even bleaker in Lumby where snow actually accumulated on the ground even if only briefly. I phoned a friend in Whitehorse and it was 22 below with 8 inches of new snow. This did not make me fell any better. As my father would have said “Cold enough for two neck ties”. Minus 6 Sunday morning had me approaching the greenhouse with a shiver of fear, everything survived I am pleased to say, although I feel that things are not growing as fast as I would like, everything looked perky and happy! Transplanting is coming along nicely and everything is now planted. I am excited to know that the Lumby and District Public Market will be open for Mother’s Day weekend so we will be there May 8th. Unless Covid rears its ugly little head and people misbehave all should be good with the precautions and rules for opening are followed.

Spring duties are not exclusive to starting our plants and planning the garden. If you have a lawn there are some big duties to be completed in order to have a handsome lawn that one can enjoy for the rest of the year. I have always raked then burned my lawn for what I though was a decent looking lawn with the optimum of affect , the easiest approach also satisfying the pyromaniac in me. This after some serious reading this may not be the best approach and I am reconsidering my options. First off the practice can be dangerous, many innocent grass fires have gotten out of hand and is defiantly not good for the air quality and may be frowned on if not illegal within city limits. Never leave your fire unattended and be sure

to do so only on a windless day. Also the opinions vary on whether the practice is actually any good for weed control or pest control. It does heat up the soil which will speed up the lawns growth that gives one the impression that the lawn is doing well however although some nutrients are made more available to the lawn, Nitrogen which is very important to your lawns health is destroyed. It can actually reduce grass yield by 50 percent and can open up soil surface for weed infestation. Thatch which is what one it trying to rid of is a result of shallow watering, poor aeration and poor soil quality, over fertilizing and the use of herbicides that are all easy to remedy by better lawn management. Thatch will restrict the amount of water and fertilizer that penetrates the soil and also houses pests and diseases. I found one site that gave several tips that will improve your lawn. Raking with a metal fan tail rake is the first step. This will remove thatch, snow mold and moss that may occur in areas of poor drainage and too much shade. Aeration should not be done in spring as it will promote crab grass and other weeds to grow. Over seed with a suitable grass seed and keep moist until it has a chance to grow. Fertilize using a mulching mower and mow a little lower than you would normally do. There are many lawn fertilizers on the market now that are not overly expensive and are organic. Herbicides should be avoided for the sake of our environment, pets and children.

Over seeding and keeping the lawn deeply watered and healthy will help squeeze out weeds. Water to a depth of 10 cm weekly as shallow watering will promote shallow roots and this will be harmful to the lawn overall. For pest control Diatomaceous earth can work well and is organic. Lawns are expensive to maintain and very time consuming perhaps reducing

Sadie (Hadley) Major 1896-1996 served the community of Lumby faithfully for over 20 years at Lumby's St. John Ambulance First Aid Post. When the post was established in 1948, the nearest doctor or hospital care was located in Vernon and there were many times when Sadie was called upon to save lives.

She married Walter James in 1925 and had 2 sons: Howard and Gordon.

Walter died in 1925 and a year or so later Sadie married John Major.

Five children were born: George, Edyth, Edwin, Melvin and Harold. Sadie was Lumby's Good Citizen of the Year in 1981.

BBQ - Healthy or NOT!

This is a repeat from last year, but a good a good refresher now that the weather is starting to get nice out.

As the BBQ’s and campfires light up, there are many fun social aspects, associated around these events.

Chips, burnt marshmallows, charred meat and the fact that it takes places outdoors gives much pleasure.

Not to be the bearer of bad news but there can be some disturbing downsides to our health if precautions are not taken. But let’s break it down.

Benefits: • Reduces fat in foods by grilling or BBQ • Tastes yummy!

Health Concerns: The concern around burnt food increasing the risk of cancer relates to the chemicals that form when food is overcooked or burnt.

• Acrylamide is a chemical that can form in some foods, especially French fries, potato chips, during high-temperature cooking processes, such as frying and grilling.

Cemetery Grounds Clean up begins April 19th, 2021 Please be advised, Village staff will be performing cemetery clean up beginning April 19th, 2021. This means that as per Bylaw No. 846, 2020 all cemetery plot adornments must be removed prior to this date. Village staff will remove any plot adornments left after April 19th to store in a secure location.

5.5 Floral tributes may be placed at a Village cemetery in accordance with the following schedule: (b) from March 15 to October 15, only fresh cut flowers may be placed on a lot. When the snow in my yard finally melted this year (it melted way faster this year than last year, I am very happy about that) I went into my backyard to check things out, making sure there was no damage from the winter before. As I walked through the yard, I thought I heard something calling my name. I looked around but did not see anything at first. As I kept walking in the yard I could hear it again. I followed the sound to see where it was coming from, and VIOLA! There it was, it was my swing, ahhhhhhh of course. I sat down on the swing, it was so peaceful, as I sat there I said out loud to my swing, "I have missed you" I am pretty sure my swing said it missed me too as it slowly moved in the breeze.

I love my swing. A few years ago a fellow had a table at the market, he was selling tickets for the beautiful wood swing he had made. So I bought a ticket for $10.00. About a week later, I got a phone call I had won the swing! Wow I was stoked! He even delivered it to me. The swing was and is beautiful. It came with the chains to put it on a stand. Every time I sit on my

swing, I thank this man that created this swing for me.

Tim built the sturdy good looking stand for it, and Ta Da I have a very beautiful functional swing built for two with drink holders on each side. In the picture you see a really cool rocking chair beside it, my neighbor had given it to me to match my swing, which is really great as I like to rock as well.

'Cherry Blossoms' by Tessa Rodermond Photography Contest The Photography show has been an outstanding success and the Monashee Arts Council is thrilled by the selection of over 80 photographs that have been entered. Thus in honor of the Canadian Naturalist and Artists 90th birthday, the Monashee Arts Council has been distributing Bateman Foundation sketch books; a project encouraging artist of all ages to get out and connect with our surroundings. Through his art Bateman shares with us ‘humanity’s relationship to the natural world’ and we invite artists of all ages and disciplines to share their nature themed art in our May show “Nurturing a love for Nature” from Monday May 3 to Saturday May 29, 2021.

So we invite you to submit your nature sketches either from your sketch book or any other nature pieces you have created recently or in the past. Submissions are limited to 3 pieces (all mediums welcome) per artist and need to be delivered to the gallery with application form by April 30th.

Memberships may be renewed/obtained at time of delivery. MAC will need the following information for each piece of work: Title, Medium, Size, Price (if selling), Description (how, why, when or where), Name of Artist.

What Would You Do With $500?

Neighbourhood Small Grants Returns April 2nd

Do you have a great idea to strengthen connections in your community? In partnership with the Community Foundation of the North Okanagan and the Vancouver Foundation, Neighbourhood Small Grants (NSG) are back! Residents in the North Okanagan are encouraged to apply for up to $500 to grow their idea and connect with their neighbours and community.

The $500 can go towards care hampers, craft and building materials, tech equipment, online hosting fees, and even honorariums. Businesses, charities, and formal groups cannot apply.

"NSG is a grassroots grantmaking program; it's just for people to apply," said Kim English, the regional NSG coordinator. "The pandemic has changed how we live and how we gather. It has also shown us just how creative people are in finding ways to connect, share, and celebrate, whether they gather online or within in their small social bubble."

Last year, neighbours gathered for online cooking demonstrations, yoga and painting classes. Small groups of neighbours focused on pandemic safe activities such as no-contact scavenger hunts, socially distanced movie-nights, and beautification projects with sign-up times.

Teens and young adults are encouraged to apply, "NSG is an excellent opportunity for young people who want to contribute to their community, and with a $500 grant, they can turn their idea into reality" added English.

As Leanne Hammond, executive director of the community foundation explains, "While we are primarily known for funding charities, this program allows us to fund good ideas at the neighbourhood level. We love being a part of that!"

The online form asks for a project description, a budget under $500, and the applicant will need to explain how they will comply with the BC Provincial health Orders.

Projects are to be delivered between July and November .

Regional District Wants To Work With The Community To Get Lumby And Cherryville Active While the White Valley Community Centre in Lumby remains closed to the public, the Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) is ready to work with community partners to offer new and past-favourite outdoor recreation programs to Lumby and Cherryville residents.

“It has been hard not having access to our recreation programs at the community centre, but we are glad that we were able to continue with the safe use of our newly renovated Pat Duke Arena” said Rick Fairbairn, Chair of the White Valley Parks, Recreation and Culture Advisory Committee. “Now that the warmer weather has arrived we can start getting active outdoors.”

Planned outdoor recreation programming is beginning with youth soccer. Conditional registration for children between the ages of three and seven that are from the Lumby and Cherryville area opened today.

“We are interested in trying to offer new programs to the community,” said Tannis Nelson, Assistant Manager, Parks, Recreation and Culture, “and we would like to do that through community partner-

ships. We know that there are many recreation and culture teachers and leaders in the area, and we want to work with them to provide some great programming for the community.”

In addition to needing youth soccer coaches, RDNO is interested in hearing from community organizations or individuals who are interested in running outdoor community programs this year like yoga, pickleball, tennis, t-ball, or even painting in the park classes. All classes would require COVID-19 safety plans.

“We can help with setting up registration, collecting fees and even coordinating park bookings for groups or individuals interested in running a course, said Nelson. “Our parks are open and in great shape, and we want to see people being active and safely enjoying them.”

open in May with COVID-19 safety measures in place, and Oval Park has newly surfaced pickleball and tennis courts that are free for drop-in when not booked.

With COVID-19 restrictions continuing to impact adult programming and requiring enhanced cleaning and scheduling protocols, the White Valley Community Centre has remained closed since March 2020 and is expected to remain closed for now with the exception of COVID-19 vaccinations.

Alternatives A-Z

Donna Easto, C.H., H.C., M.H., Certified Herbal Educator In the search for better health, many people are looking to a broad array of alternatives or complements to standard medicine. Some of these medical treatments are very old, some very new. In the following weeks, we’ll explore the ‘what’ and ‘how’ of alternative approaches from Needle Therapy to Zone Therapy. These brief descriptions are for information only and should not be interpreted as an endorsement of any particular therapy or technique. It is important to do further research and discuss any treatment choice with your health care provider.

In acupressure, the practitioner applies firm pressure using fingers, thumbs, palms and elbows to specific points to stimulate and regulate the body’s healing energy. Developed thousands of years ago in China, acupressure strives to achieve the traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) goal of keeping the body balanced through the healthy flow of healing energy (qi/chi) circulating through the body along pathways called meridians. Traditional Chinese medicine practitioners believe the human body has more than 2,000 acupuncture points. Acupuncture and acupressure use the same points on the body, but acupressure is a non-invasive therapy that uses no needles. Pressure is applied to each point as needed and may vary in duration from a few seconds to five minutes until relief

is achieved. Shiatsu is a style of acupressure.

The Shiatsu therapist applies pressure to specific points and wider areas of the body and will incorporate stretches for relaxation. A typical acupressure session lasts about one hour, Shiatsu 40-60 minutes.

Acupuncture, or needle therapy, is an ancient Chinese technique that involves the insertion of hair-thin needles at precise points on the body. The objective is to correct the underlying causes of disease and bring about a lasting cure.

Acupuncture points are believed to stimulate the central nervous system, releasing chemicals into muscles, the spinal cord, and the brain.

These biochemical changes restore the body's natural healing abilities and promote physical and emotional well-being. Acupuncture opens blocked meridians in the body, helping the qi (chi) flow freely, stimulating physical reactions, including brain activity, blood chemistry, endocrine function, blood pressure, heart rate, and immune system response. The acupuncturist will assess your condition and insert needles in the appropriate points on your body. The session lasts about 50-60 minutes. It may include, with your permission, the use of moxibustion, a heat therapy that makes use of herbs such as Artemisia vulgaris (mugwort) applied above the acupuncture point.

An Alexander Technique teacher will help you recognize and change poor postural habits and unhealthy body mechanics that may limit your mobility and interfere with your body’s optimum functioning. It’s a gentle and gradual process using simple exercises to improve balance, posture and coordination. Frederick Mathias Alexander developed this approach in the 19th century. An Alexander Technique session lasts about 30-50 minutes and involves gentle hands-on guidance and verbal coaching.

One-Pan Firecracker Salmon*

Here’s a tangy recipe for salmon using ACV that I found on the internet. It just looked too good not to try.

Delicious!

1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar, 1/2 teaspoon of the kosher salt, and 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes in a small saucepan over medium heat.

Bring to a boil, stirring to dissolve the sugar.

Reduce the heat to low and simmer until slightly thickened, about 10 minutes. Stir and remove Ingredients from the heat. The sauce will thicken as it cools.

Power the Tower Fundraising Campaign Launches for Radio Society You can help launch Vernon’s newest radio station.

The Vernon Community Radio Society (VCRS) is excited to announce we can begin accepting your donations. “Residents have been asking how they can help and now is the time to donate.” Says Gord Leighton, President of the Society.

Phase one of the fundraising campaign is to Power the Tower – raising the funds for the transmitter, antennae, related processing equipment, wiring, and installation. This is the first step in getting 97.9 Valley FM on the air, Vernon’s first Community Radio Station. Subsequent phases will include studios, control rooms, technical equipment rooms and offices.

The Vernon Community Radio Society is embarking on a fundraising campaign, with a target of $200,000 to launch the new community based FM radio station to serve Greater Vernon. The Society, an incorporated as a not-for profit, received a 7-year license for the new community station from the CRTC last September.
