To address rising COVID-19 case counts, protect people and communities and help break the chain of COVID-19 transmission, the provincial health officer is amending the provincial public health orders effective midnight tonight, March 30, 2021.

"COVID-19 continues to create challenges for people and businesses throughout B.C., and we are grateful for the sacrifices people continue to make to keep one another safe," said Premier John Horgan. "We know that the idea of more restrictions is not welcome news, but we are asking people to rise to the challenge with the confidence that vaccines mean better days are ahead. We are not out of the woods yet, but the provincial health officer's orders, combined with our vaccines, give us the tools we need to move out of this pandemic together."

New and amended orders and guidelines are in effect through April 19, 2021, and include: • For restaurants, bars and pubs, all food and liquor-serving premises must only provide take-out or delivery service. Dine-in service is prohibited, except for outdoor patios. People dining on patios should do so with their immediate household or core bubble.

• Indoor, adult group fitness activities of any kind are also paused. Gyms and fitness centres are restricted to individual or one-on-one activities only i.e. one-on-one personal training.

• The previously announced class variance for limited indoor worship services has been suspended. Outdoor worship services under the current variance may continue.

Cooler evenings have been a bit of a disappointment but using giant heat matts does seem to give the seedlings an edge. I have planted all my flower seeds and most vegetables land herbs. I will be planting squash, cucumber, cauliflower and broccoli this week. This should make for nice sized bedding plants. There are a few things one can plant outside fairly soon, cool weather plants like spinach, Swiss chard, peas and lettuce can be planted very early and simple row covers will protect the seedlings should an unexpected heavy frost occur. Just because of space and time requirements it doesn’t mean that you can’t have a bit of a garden or plant some herbs or flowers.

It has been an incredible array of Spring weather this last week from snow and sleet to pouring rain.

Brilliant sunshine to nasty winds. I watched Sunday as all the leaves I had carefully raked up in the fall and placed in my garden blow back onto the lawn. Great another do over will be needed. I wish to extend my apologies for a few things. 1st the absence of my article in last weeks paper. I have just survived a month of renovations and have learned again how insidious dry wall dust can be. I started cleaning too early as the workers were not finished and now will have to do some of it over again, I rushed madly, after the last workman left my home, having about 24 hours to restore some semblance of order and cleanliness to receive my first company of the year. I will consider the second cleaning as my fall cleaning which puts me ahead for the year. I didn’t get everything done however but everyone had a clean place to sleep and I will finish everything else when time permits. All this and company kept me overwhelmed and exhausted and unable to even contemplate my article. I also wish to apologize to Pam and Norm who sent me an email last month, I went to respond to the email and saw an option to send it to another email address popped up.

Thinking this would work well as it is hard to type an email on my phone, I sent it to the email on my laptop.

Cemetery Grounds Clean up begins April 19th, 2021 Please be advised, Village staff will be performing cemetery clean up beginning April 19th, 2021. If the Easter bunny only brings chocolate eggs, be sure to eat your regular eggs too, don’t just colour them. Eggs, are highly nutritious and one of the best protein sources out there! They contain all essential and nonessential amino acids that our body requires.

Amino acids build proteins, which are the main building blocks of our body. There are 21 amino acids and 9 are essential, meaning they cannot be produced by our body and have to be obtained from our diet.

A high-quality protein source, contains the correct amounts and ratios of these amino acids. Egg’s win!

When looking at other proteins, the biological value or measure of quality, is often evaluated by comparing it to eggs, which are given the perfect score of 100.

Sometimes it is still thought, because eggs carry cholesterol, that if you have high cholesterol you should avoid them. But now luckily, we know that is not the case, as the small amount of bad “LDL” in them has little to no affect on your levels. The even better news is, that they can actually help increase your healthy “HDL”!

They are an excellent source of heme iron. Heme iron from animal-based foods, are more bioavailable for absorption, whereas plant-based iron foods, are not. As of February 1, 2021, the Province has made administration of the Contaminated Sites Regulation mandatory for local governments. Site disclosure statements must now be submitted for Rezoning, Development Permit, and Building Permit applications where soil disturbance is likely.

Site disclosure statements require applicants to declare whether their property has been used for a commercial or industrial purpose listed in Schedule 2 of the Contaminated Sites Regulation. Site disclosure statements are now included as part of the Village of Lumby’s application packages.

Poor hearing can have a significant impact on the quality of life and it is one of the most common conditions affecting older adults. Between the ages of 65 and 74, it is estimated that one in three people have some form of hearing loss. After the age of 75, it is estimated that nearly half of these seniors have hearing issues. Not only can conversation and communication be difficult, it could also be dangerous if your ability to react to warning sounds is impeded.

Hearing loss can happen for many different reasons.

Hearing failure due to aging is called presbycusis and can afflict some people much more than others. Noise induced hearing issues are also common as there are dozens of occupations and activities that can cause hearing loss, if one is exposed to loud sound too often, without taking the necessary precautions. conditions can also be responsible for hearing problems as well. Regardless of the cause, hearing loss is a gradual progression so many people may not realize how much their hearing is diminishing.

If you think that you are struggling with a hearing issue, the most valuable thing you can do for yourself is seek professional advice.

Photos and Memories From The Lumby Museum

In 1860, Lumby was called "Bull Meadows"; "Bessette" in 1877 after Peter Bessette who farmed where Lumby is today and "Whitevalley" in 1889 when the post office opened.

Today's namesake, Moses Lumby was born in England in 1840 and died in Victoria at the age of 52 from Typhoid Fever.

He served the public as a Justice of the Peace, Government Agent and Gold Commissioner.

In 1894, a year after his passing, the Village of Lumby was named after him.

The Village of Lumby has initiated a process to adopt a Trail Network map into the Official Community Plan.

Lumby citizens of all ages with an interest in walking, jogging, cycling and other non-motorized means of getting around town are encouraged to review the proposed Trail Network Plan and to provide comments to the Village of Lumby.

The Village of Lumby is looking for feedback Where would you like to see new trails, connections or improvements?

• A print version of the Trail Network Plan will be mailed out with the Village’s utility billing in early April 2021.

This is a column meant for fun and some information About myself: I am a Freelance Photographer you often see me on the side of the road or in various places taking photos of different things animals, birds, places, people etc. l have lived in Lumby just over 8 years,you have seen my photos in the newspaper (Lumby Valley Times) and once in awhile in the Vernon Morning Star, and the Lumby Art Gallery. Photography is my passion. Disclaimer: The information on some of my photos that I write about a lot of times come from the Internet or books I research them, hopefully the facts are as close to the truth as I can come.

Hoppity Hop Easter is also known as Holy Friday, Great Friday, Great and Holy Friday, and believe it or not but also Black Friday (not only a day the stores chose to be for shopping) is right around the corner. To some people it is a very religious time. But for some it is something entirely different.

When I was a little girl every Easter I would get a new bonnet, gloves, sometimes a dress and shoes if the money wasn't too tight. I would wear my new outfit

to church.

After church we would go home, once home I would put away my Easter outfit and go outside, here the games began. My sisters and I would go hunting for eggs that we had decorated the night before, and look for candy as well. By the time we came back into the house there would be a yummy chocolate bunny waiting for us. Of course we were not allowed to touch the bunny until after the delicious meal of Ham, Scalloped Potatoes, Peas, salad and the parts of the Chocolate Bunny for dessert. ( just a heads up if you want to invite me over for dinner sometime this is one of my favorites). After the dishes were done my stepfather would always watch the movie Ben-Hur with Charlton Heston on the TV (every once in a while as I flip through the channels with my remote to see what's on I see the movie is still playing, no I don't watch it I never really did.)

Around the 17th century when children were becoming more visible to the adults, and they were now not just little people that had to learn the way of the world (or using the silly old wives tale that children should be seen and not heard, rubbish I say, of course they should be heard. You have to admit when you hear children laughing while playing brings a smile to your face as well.) Easter eggs and the Easter Bunny were starting to become popular. The eggs were for the symbol of new life. Easter Bunny came from a German Tradition about an Easter Hare that would bring eggs to the children.

The candy and chocolate makers thrive during Easter as this Holiday comes in 2nd while Halloween comes in first for candy sales. At Easter there are Chocolate Eggs, Chocolate Bunnies, and Jelly Beans.

Jelly Beans are very popular at Easter as over 16 Billion of them are made each year (wow that's a lot of Jelly Beans and sugar) this is enough to fill a giant Egg that has been measured at 89 feet high, 60 feet wide.

The Easter candy called Peeps (originally called Just Born) which is a Marshmallow very sugary yellow in color to signify Chicks was created in Bethlehem Pennsylvania made by a Russian immigrant by the name of Sam Born in 1923. The Peeps did not start selling until the 1950's. A few years later Chocolate Marshmallow and Chocolate Mousse Bunnies and other shapes were brought out.

Here' something for those of you that have a super sweet tooth: The largest Easter Egg made from Marshmallow and covered in Chocolate was 25 feet high, this thing weighed over 8,000 pounds it was built on an internal steel frame, now that should keep you going for awhile, and no doubt your Dentist will be very happy to see you once a week as well .

Photography Contest With spring in the air, photographers are capturing the beauty of the changing seasons. The Monashee Arts Council is pleased to host their spring photography show/contest with entries from all over Lumby, Cherryville and Lavington.

“This photography contest replaces the one MAC normally conducts in June to coincide with Lumby Days. However this year, due to the pandemic and the cancellation of Lumby Days, the Monashee Arts Council decided to host the annual contest along with a photography show for the month of April 2021 in the Village Gallery,” says organizer and MAC member Nina Westaway.

MAC invites visitors to come in and cast their vote for ‘People’s Choice’! There are three age categories: 14 years and under, 15-24 years, and adult.

Ev Skills Training Powering Up At Okanagan College And Other B.C. Colleges More automotive technicians in B.C. can upgrade their skills to work on electric vehicles (EVs) through the expansion of the EV Maintenance Training program to Okanagan College and other institutions in the province.

On Monday, March 29, the B.C. Government announced $440,000 through the Province’s CleanBC Go Electric program and in partnership with Trades Training BC (TTBC); the program will be offered at Okanagan College’s Kelowna campus, College of New Caledonia’s Prince George campus and Camosun College’s Interurban campus in Victoria.

The funding will allow Okanagan College to serve as a regional hub for the Southern Interior for hybrid and EV training.

“We know from speaking with our students and with industry that there is huge interest and a real need for EV training. This funding ensures we can tool up to deliver stateof-the-art training that will help our students be in demand and get jobs.

It means our students are training with the very latest technologies and training aids. So, it’s a win-win-win for our students, for Okanagan College and for employers,” said Andrew Ross, Automotive Service Technician (AST) instructor, Okanagan College, who spoke during the announcement.

Red Seal automotive technicians wanting to upgrade their skills in EV maintenance should monitor the College’s Trades and Apprenticeship webpage – okanagan.bc.ca/trades – for updates. The first intake for the new training will take place this fall.

Gentleman’s Delight!

Contributor: Merle Morphy Here’s a recipe that, despite its saucy name, is really very sweet. Merle has made this dessert for many years (it’s been in the family for three generations) to high praise from everyone who’s ever been lucky enough to sample it. It’s the first in what I hope will be a great response from Lumby and area folks to share their favourite recipes in this space.

Ingredients:

Combine: • 1 cup chopped dates • 1 ¼ cups boiling water • 1 tsp baking soda Set aside to cool and then mix well.

Combine and cream together: • ½ cup margarine • 1 cup sugar • 2 eggs • 1 ½ cup flour • 1 tsp Pure Vanilla • ½ tsp salt • ¾ tsp baking soda

Directions:

Mix together date mixture and creamed mixture. Spread in an 8x10 greased pan and spread topping over the batter.

Topping: Mix together: • ½ cup chocolate chips • ½ cup brown sugar • ½ cups sliced almonds Bake at 350F for 40 minutes. Once the cake has cooled completely, cut and serve. Don’t worry about storing the leftovers, there won’t be any.
