More than 400,000 people in British Columbia will be immunized from March to early April as the Province moves into Phase 2 of the largest immunization rollout in B.C.’s history.

“At every step of the way, we are putting the health and safety of British Columbians first,” said Premier John Horgan. “B.C. was one of the first provinces to lay out our vaccine plan, and now we’re moving to Phase 2 to reach even more of our seniors and Elders.

We’re getting vaccine into arms as fast as we can given early supply delays from manufacturers, and we’re seeing it start to make a difference for people and their communities throughout our province.”

Those in Phase 2 receiving their first vaccine dose in March and early April include: • seniors and high-risk people residing in independent living and seniors’ supportive housing (including staff); • home-care support clients and staff; • Indigenous (First Nations, Métis, Inuit) peoples born in or before 1956 (65 years and older); and • seniors born in or before 1941 (80 years and older).

“The pandemic has been incredibly difficult for all of us, and I’m proud of our health-care workers who continue to work around the clock to safely and efficiently deliver the vaccine to British Columbians throughout the province,” said Adrian Dix, Minister of Health.

“We are all eager to put the pandemic behind us, and today marks a major step towards keeping British Columbians safe from COVID-19.”

On March 1, 2021, first-dose immunizations begin for those living and working in independent living centres and seniors’ supportive housing, as well as homecare support clients and staff. Health authorities will directly contact those in this priority group to book appointments – no need to call.

Beginning March 8, 2021, seniors aged 80+ and Indigenous peoples aged 65+ who are not living in independent living or seniors’ supportive housing can make one call to book their appointment through their local health authority call centre according to a staggered schedule. This is to avoid long waits and system overload. Immunization clinic locations will be confirmed at time of booking, with vaccinations starting as early

B.C. Moves To Phase 2 Of Covid-19 Immunization Plan, Protects Seniors

as March 15, 2021: • March 8, 2021: Seniors born in or before 1931 (90 years+) and Indigenous people born in or before 1956 (65 years+) may call to book their vaccine appointment; • March 15, 2021: Seniors born in or before 1936 (85 years+) may call to book their vaccine appointment; and • March 22, 2021: Seniors born in or before 1941 (80 years+) may call to book their vaccine appointment.

“This immunization process is a massive undertaking and I thank the regional health authorities, the thousands of health-care workers and medical staff, our colleagues in the Ministry of Health and the many community partners who help us to deliver care and who have been working tirelessly throughout this pandemic for their dedication and support,” said Dr. Penny Ballem, executive lead for B.C.’s immunization plan. “Phase 2 is right on schedule, and we are working closely with each of the regional health authorities

to make sure that they have the tools and resources needed to safely and efficiently book appointments.”

To Lumby Residents and Home Owners, Here we are in springtime once more. A time to rake the lawn, trim the hedge and prune and cut back the trees. Whoa! There's a snag. The Village of Lumby has , without warning, cancelled the spring chipping program. What do homeowners do with the branches. If you have no pickup truck or means of taking these branches and trimmings to the dump you are left with the option of hiring someone to do this for you. This expense will range from $30 to $50 if you hire a commercial outfit. Even if Uncle Louie doe sit for a case of beer, it's going to cost about $25.

Perhaps people can cut down all the trees ans we can have a bald, treeless town. How much is the Village saving by doing this?

Going…going…gone? Learning from history.

By the end of World War II about 320,000 people lived spread out over 1,000 small “outports”, small fishing villages many of which dating back as far as the Napoleonic Wars (*source: Atlasobscura.com).

These communities were self-sufficient and lived by fishing the abundant cod and herring fields, and by logging and seal hunting.

The beginning of the end came In 1949, when Newfoundland and Labrador voted to join Canada.

The studies done by the departments of Welfare and Fisheries proved that this way of life was backwards and that there was much more money to be made by “modernizing” how resources were extracted. In came the trawlers, the machines, the corporations to run it all. The poet Al Pittman said it all in this verse "My home was St Kyran’s, a heavenly place, It thrived on the fishin’ of a good hearty race; But now it will never again be the same, Since they made it a pawn in the government game.”

Of course this doesn't affect the council members because they don't live in Lumby. "That's something that needs to change."

This is a time of tight money, exasperated by the COVID-19 situation, seems to be a low blow. The Village seems to have plenty of money to dig mud holes and mud paths around the field on the west side of town.

Perhaps we all should remember who the people responsible for this decision are the next time we go to the polls to elect our civic representatives next time around.

Your friend, Charlie Fisher, Lumby, BC of the government “resettlement” programs, leaving behind 300 “ghost villages” In the summer of 1992, Minister John Crosbie announced that 500 years of history would be wiped out overnight. The cod was gone. People were told to stop fishing. The fishermen didn’t take that too well.

“We’ve always fished. The cod is our life. Newfoundland was built on the cod.” Some argued to continue because there was still 1% of the biomass left. But, as can be proven today, not enough to regenerate it. The whole ecosystem that produced such riches, all there for the taking, had been so over-harvested, that never, even in our grandchildren’s lifetime, will it ever come back. Today, corporations make money running fish farms that produce poor imitations of what was there for all to harvest freely.

We see the same thing happening in BC with the destructive practices used in forestry. There is practically no natural forest left. Even the plantations are getting so sparse as to offer a visible proof that the system is collapsing. Studies are showing that the interior replanted “forests” are not regenerating as expected.

As logged watersheds lose their water purifying and retention ability, communities are asked to pay the cost of building sediment retention ponds and spend more on water treatment that is done freely by intact watersheds.

While corporations and shareholders push practices that makes them a fast buck, forests and local jobs are disappearing. Isn’t it time that our local and provincial governments stop supporting these destructive practices and give local citizens control over their watersheds?

What Grows Under Your Nose?... Tulips!!

Spring Cleanup

Many people have been enjoying our beautiful spring sunshine by indulging in various types of yard work and just enjoying the outdoors. A lot of cleanup can be done now such as pruning, raking and general yard work. There is nothing nicer than playing outdoors and planning the yard and gardens look for the year. Be sure lawn areas are dry enough to safely rake, you do not want to rip up patches of roots.

Do not remove leaf mulch in flower beds yet as it will prevent weed growth until you are ready to plant.

The leaves will not prevent plants like daffodils, tulips, other bulbs or other perennials that return from root stage from growing. If you are growing your own bedding plants most things can be planted now except cucumber, squash, cauliflower, broccoli and members of that family. Be sure to check the packages for their suggestions as some will sprout so quickly and grow so rapidly that containment may become and issue and transplanting may also not work as well. Be sure to watch for plants that seem to collapse, this may be do to damping off and many seedlings can be vulnerable to this problem. Sprinkle the seedlings and soil with cinnamon, this is a natural fungicide and works well.

I was sorry to read in the Morning Star of another Owl in rehab due to ingestion of mouse poison.

The use of any poison be it a pesticide, weed killer or mouse poison is counterproductive and harmful

to our predatory birds, household pets, other wildlife and our environment. Predatory birds like hawks, eagles and owls are not one magnificent creatures they also keep rodent populations in check. Owl consume about 1000 rodents annually and without their contribution these rodents will soon become uncontrollable. Not only do they consume rodents but they also dine on field rats, rabbits, squirrels, grasshoppers, cutworms and other insects. By using rat or mouse poison you not only condemn these rodents to a malingering several day painful death by internal bleeding but any creature that consumes these dying rodents to the same lengthy, painful death. This can include household pets, other mammals like coyotes, bob cats, cougars, raccoons and skunks. Children too have consumed these poisons directly, not good or worth the use of poison. There are other perils that have put wildlife in a dangerous position but this is one that we can do something about. The best way of getting rid of problematic rodents is prevention.

To enhance your home and yard from infestation be sure to keep dog and cat food unavailable, bird feeders should have trays to gather the seed that the birds spread, be sure to pick up fallen fruit from your trees, keep garbage and recycling secured, use mesh or steel wool to close entry points in foundations and wire holes into your home. Predator urine can be used to

discourage rodents as well as a variety or traps and ultrasonic repellers. Stay away from glue traps as it is not only a nasty way to die for the rodent but snakes, small birds and kittens can be affected. Cats too can be very helpful although they too can be harmful to small birds. Other items too have come into play as being detrimental to bird populations and one of these now includes single use face masks. Really, have we not learned anything? Stay safe, be calm and be kind!

Spring is in the Air

Seniors, we can finally say good bye to shovels, mittens, woolly hats, scarves and watching the severe winter weather reports…the first day of spring officially begins this weekend!

There may still be some snow on the ground but it is a sunny outlook as we welcome spring days with some fun facts: • Did you know that spring fever is a real syndrome?

When temperatures begin to rise after a long winter, there is a dilation of blood vessels so blood can be carried to the body surface where heat can be lost quickly. People can experience an energetic feeling when this happens.

• On the first day of spring, a person in the North Pole will see the sun skimming across the horizon, beginning six months of uninterrupted daylight.

Province Approves BCHL’s Safe Return To Play Players in the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) will be able to lace up for a limited season starting in April after the provincial health officer conditionally approved a plan for a safe return to play.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted our lives in countless ways. To keep each other safe, we have had to limit activities that are fundamental to our normal way of life,” said Premier John Horgan. “While we are not out of the woods yet, there is hope on the horizon and we are now ready to, gradually and safely, resume some of these activities. That includes getting young people back on the ice this season.”

The revised plan from the BCHL has improved safety protocols in place including health screening and testing, limited travel, “pod” cities and a pre-season quarantine plan. Protocols are also in place to limit interactions between players, coaches and staff from the BCHL, and the communities they play in. The five pods will be located in Penticton, Coquitlam, Chilliwack, Vernon and Port Alberni.

“Sports are important for young people’s development and we understand how hard the time away from friends and teammates has been,” said Adrian Dix, Minister of Health. “I know that Dr. Henry and her team are working hard to determine how to safely return more leagues back to the field of play this spring.”

First Deployment Of Astrazeneca Vaccine In B.C. Dr. Bonnie Henry, B.C.’s provincial health officer (PHO), and Adrian Dix, Minister of Health, have issued the following joint statement regarding British Columbia’s COVID-19 response: “As the first doses of AstraZeneca/SII (AZ/SII) arrive in B.C., work is underway to use this vaccine to assist with outbreak response in communities and protect workers throughout the province.

“When B.C. initially launched its COVID-19 Immunization Plan, we were hopeful additional vaccines would be approved so we could allocate them to priority and front-line workers and industries ahead of Phase 3.

“Now, the initial shipment of AZ/SII vaccine will be used to protect workers in industries where full use of personal protective equipment and barriers can be challenging, outbreaks and clusters have occurred or

are ongoing, and workers must live or work in congregate settings. These efforts will complement B.C.’s foundational age-based immunization plan.

“Immunizing workers in these settings will not only protect workers, it will also protect the communities around them, including many rural, remote and Indigenous communities.

“By deploying AZ/SII in this way, B.C. will be able to manage outbreaks, prevent them before they occur and deploy vaccines strategically to reduce COVID-19 transmission in B.C. “Public health and WorkSafeBC have identified the highest risk categories of worksites through the COVID-19 Workplace Task Group established by the PHO in November 2020. These include: • food processing plants, including poultry, fruit and fish processing;

• agricultural operations with congregate worker accommodations, including farms, nurseries and greenhouses; • large industrial camps under the PHO Industrial Camps order with congregate accommodations for workers; and • other large congregate living settings for workers where isolation and quarantine is difficult and outbreaks are ongoing.

“Remember, the best vaccine for you is the one available now. The BC Immunization Committee is reviewing the latest data and recommendations from the National Advisory Committee on Immunization to determine additional workplaces that will be prioritized for immunization using the AZ/SII vaccine.

The updated plan for additional shipments of AZ/SII vaccine will be released in the coming days.”

MAC is grateful to the British Columbia Arts Council, for their continued support, this time by awarding us with an Arts and Culture Resiliency Supplement grant. This $18,000 grant will mean so much to the Monashee Arts Council allowing us to continue serving our community during this upcoming 2021 season Local Arts and Culture Grants 2021 It’s that time again! Even with the continuation of Covid-19 we are pleased to be putting out the call for applications for the MAC Local Arts and Culture grants. Application forms and guidelines will be avaliable at the office and via email. We encourage applicants to think of how events can be made to follow the current health regulations. Dust off your photo archives, show Lumby amazing photographs you’ve taken over the past year and beyond, or get out and take some new images to display in our upcoming show! Come together and showcase anything from animals and landscapes to portraits and micro in this wonderful show.

Digital cameras and I Phones have opened up the whole world to all levels of photographers from Amateurs to professionals. Such a beautiful and magical world! The Monashee Arts Council is sponsoring a photo competition and show for the month of April 2021. Anyone from Lumby, Cherryville, Lavington and Whitevale can enter. There are three age categories: 14 years and under, 15-24 years, and adult. Entries will be juried by local photographers Bruce Borrowman, Dale Eurich, and Mikayla Appleby. As well as prizes for each category, there will be a prize for People’s Choice determined by visitors to the Village Gallery which is hosting the show.

Applications for entry will be available starting Monday, March 1, 2021 with a deadline of Saturday, March 27 at 3:00 pm. Each entrant is allowed up to 3 photos with a $2 fee for each entry. The requisite size is 8” x 10”; borderless prints are preferred. For display purposes, photographs must be backed by foam board or cardboard. Self-adhesive backings can be purchased for $4 each at the Village Gallery (1975 Vernon St Lumby – Monday through Saturday, 10 am to 3 pm).

Burnt Out? Try Adaptogens Donna Easto H.C, C.H. M.H., Certified Herbal Educator Starting to use an adaptogen is like inviting a trusted friend to visit: it’s not harmful; helps you keep balanced; can be stimulating, but not addictive, and makes your heart feel good. And, like our friends they range from the gentle calming type to the let’s party type. It’s important to invite the right friend to visit, especially when your’re in burnout – they’ll have to stay for a minimum of three weeks! Like friends, if one is good three are great. You’ll often come upon products that combine several adaptogens - just be sure they’re all safe and synergistic. Let’s imagine someone has the following symptoms, they’re overwhelmed, frayed, edgy, nervous or anxious, have trouble falling asleep, chronic aches and pains, brain fog and muscle tension. I’d consider the following adaptogens.

Soothing Ashwagandha: My personal favorite, known for stress relief and enhanced relaxation, it also supports cognitive function and endurance. A good option if you’re feeling stressed and burnt out.

It’s very effective for relieving anxiety, fatigue, cloudy thinking, insomnia and nervous exhaustion. Ashwagandha combined with Black Cohosh root is regularly used to relive the pain of fibromyalgia. Be on the watch for gastric upset which may be a sign of an overdose. Avoid if you are pregnant, allergic to night-

shades, have excess iron or hyperthyroid disease. Be cautious when using with sedative medications and stop 2 weeks prior to planned surgery.

Nourishing Holy Basil: Also known as Tulsi, which means “the incomparable one”, holy basil is a good choice for improving energy, relieving fatigue and mild depression, chronic inflammation, and lowering high blood sugar, cholesterol or triglyceride levels. Often combined with cerebral stimulants like rosemary, bacopa and standardized ginkgo extract for menopausal brain fog, poor memory and ADHD. Common basil is not the same as Holy Basil which is a different species.

Nourishing, Calming, and Tonic Reishi Mushroom: A great choice in cases of anxiety, insomnia, bad dreams, moodiness, confusion, irritability, listlessness and poor memory. This powerful mushroom has been shown to improve cardio-vascular function and can be of benefit to people with allergic asthma and hay fever. Reishi and holy basil are a natural pairing. If you plan to climb Mount Everest after the pandemic is over, look for a formula of cordyceps, holy basil and rhodiola before visiting high-altitude locations. Avoid reishi if you are allergic to mushrooms, and use cautiously with blood-thinning medications.

T-4’s will be issued to all persons who received “CERB”, “CESB”, “CRB”, “CRCB” or “CRSB” benefits in 2020.

Seniors are receiving their Old Age Pension and Canada Pension slips; the banks are issuing their T-5’s for interest earned and RRSP/RRIF’s are being dealt with.

The Community Volunteer Income Tax Program is up and running again this year. Beth and Marilyn will be starting the program on Tuesday, March 2nd as follows: All locations and times are at the OAP Hall (under the red roof) at 1765 Glencaird Street.

If you do not file your return, the GST and Child Tax Benefits (if applicable) may be interrupted/discontinued as well as other benefits you may have.

Haluski And Kielbasa This super easy dish is probably familiar if your ancestors hailed from Central or Eastern Europe, Russia or Kashubia (where my great-grandparents lived.) I’d try Sundowner Meats and Deli for the kielbasa or another suitable smoked sausage Ingredients: • 12 ounces of egg noodles • ½ cup butter • 1 onion chopped • 1 pound kielbasa cut into thin slices • 1 head of cabbage washed and chopped • Salt and pepper to taste Directions: 1. Boil egg noodles in salted water until just firm, drain, rinse and set aside 2. In large frying pan or Dutch oven, melt 1-2 tablespoons butter or EVO, and cook onion until soft

3. Add kielbasa and cook until just browned. Remove to a plate, cover and set aside 4. In the frying pan cook cabbage until slightly soft 5. Mix in noodles, adding butter as you go, cook until warm and heated through 6. Stir in kielbasa and add more butter if desired 7. Season with salt and pepper This dish takes about 40 minutes to prepare and cook and serves approximately ten people.
