Honouring Their Memory

Building a Commemorative Bench for Jean Latval and Elinor Turrill Lumby & District Health Services has partnered with Janet Green to bring acknowledgment, honour and appreciation to these two ladies. Within the past two years Lumby has lost two valued and dedicated volunteers. Jean passed away August 22, 2019 and Elinor passed away September 4, 2020.

For thirty years they supported their community by serving on non-profit boards. They were not paid, but driven by dedication to make improvements to their community that mattered.

Just for Fun Now That I'm Older...

• My goal for 2020 was to lose 10 pounds. I only have 14 to go.

• Ate salad for dinner. Mostly croutons and tomatoes. Really just one big round crouton covered with tomato sauce, and cheese. FINE, it was a pizza...OK!?

• A recent study has found women who carry a little extra weight live longer than men who mention it.

• Kids today don't know how easy they have it. When I was young, I had to walk 9 feet through shag carpet to change the TV channel.

• Remember back when we were kids and every time it was below zero outside they closed school? Yeah, Me neither.

• I may not be that funny or athletic or good looking or smart or talented. I forgot where I was going with this.

• I love aging, I learn something new every day and forget 5 other things.

• You are only young once, but you can stay immature indefinitely.

• Old age isn't so bad when you consider the alternative."

• I'm still patiently waiting for the wisdom that comes with age. Anyone else?

• Your age is merely the number of years the world has been enjoying you!

LOSS of Freedom, for Safety...

To the Editor, Canadians, unlike many Americans, neglect to remember that we also have certain "Rights and Freedoms", first entrenched in the Constitution of Canada in 1982. It also was the time we received a Charter of "Rights and Freedoms". This Charter guarantees certain political and Civil rights to all Canadians.

Some of these guaranteed "Rights" are: Freedom of Religion, Freedom of thought, belief, and expression, Freedom of Travel and association, etc., and form a part of the guide throughout the Charter. One thing that has always disturbed me was the "right of the accused" but has never mentioned any specific rights for the VICTIMS of crime.

That leads me directly into Trudeau's Bill C-21, 22 and Bill 71, which could result in a Law obeying citizen, being NOT allowed to own and possess firearms, LAWFULLY as in the past. All under the pretext of the Liberal Government's ("Trudeau and Bill Blair's) nonfactual claim, that it would guarantee a "Safer Society." Liberals do this to gain votes, and enable them to stay in Power, but also to allow alignment with other Socialist Countries.

They are WRONG, it will NOT insure a safer Society, as some might think.

If you are interested, ask our Local MP, WHY Trudeau has spent 60 million bucks, to buy off Media, where he and Bill Blair find time almost every day, to further encourage citizens to believe that if

THEY take all firearms from Law abiding citizens, we will be safer! Yet mention nothing about Drugs, Gangs and Crimes committed by gangs, or previously convicted then released criminals, nor do they comment on an unjust Court system, that is so intent on punishment of Citizens who obey the Laws, and harm no one. Yet they allow previously convicted individuals to continue their actions of Criminal behaviour.

A Government who punishes and threatens to seize privately owned property, then CRIMINALIZE "ordinary" hard working citizens who have obeyed ALL laws during their lifetime with Jail and financial ruin.

Regardless if you agree with me or not, and if you feel the need to "re-align" yourself with OUR Charter Rights, or perhaps also believe in taking Guns from Law Obeying citizens, then allow me to quote a famous person, who helped shape a Country, whose thousands of young boys, both in America and Canada, lived and died, fighting for some of the "basic" rights mentioned and when basic rights and Freedoms are destroyed by unfair and unnecessary Laws, designed only for Control and disregard of these Rights and Freedoms, that all of us have earned, then each young man DIED for nothing.!!

God Bless ALL VETERANS. I believe it was Ben Franklin, whose quote was, "Those who sacrifice Freedom, for Safety, deserve neither Freedom nor safety."

What Did The Bee Say To The Daffodil?... Hey Bud When Are You Open!!!

Another sure sign of spring is the Daffodil and the plants along my house have now grown about 2 inches above the soil. Daffodils are a fall planted bulb that should be planted about 6 weeks prior to a hard frost. Planting them in spring or anytime earlier to the hard frosts before winter will only invite fugal problems and diseases. Other than that they are easy to grow and require little care other than to replant every few years once they become overcrowded as this will stop them from blooming. They are members of the Amaryllis family and are also referred to as Narcissus. They are a sign that winter is almost over and a bright cheery sign of warm weather to come. They are symbols of rebirth, new beginnings, forgiveness, vitality, hope and joy. To give a bouquet of them to someone you love symbolizes that they are the only one and are the flower given for a 10 year anniversary as a symbol of joy, cheer and happiness. The mythological symbol for the god Narcissus the son of the river god Cephissus. He was a very handsome god but belittled those who loved him. It is told that the mountain nymph named Echo saw him and fell in love with the handsome man but when he called to her she could only repeat his words. When she approached him he rejected her and she spent the rest of her days wandering the forests till only her voice existed. When Nimesis goddess of revenge learned Of Echo’s demise she led Narcissus to a stream where he saw his reflection and fell in love. He was so smitten that he was unable to leave his reflection and eventually fell asleep and drowned. Thus every spring the can be found along the banks of streams and rivers. Many cultures revere the Daffo-

dil, the Welsh believe those who fist see the Daffodil will have wealth for the next 12 months it is also their national flower.

The Chinese who first became acquainted with the Daffodil in the 10th century believe that if one blooms in your yard on New Years Day which this year was February 14th that you will have a year of good fortune. However early Europeans believed that if the flower of the Daffodil drooped it was an omen of death and giving one bloom to someone it would bring misfortune except on the Isle of Scilly where to this day one is sent to Prince Charles in payment for land on the Isle that is left unattended. It is the birth flower for the month of March.

The Narcissus or Daffodil is highly poisonous to small children and animals. It has Calcium Oxalates in the leaves and roots and the bulbs contain Lycorine which is the most dangerous. If ingested medical help most definitely be called.

Symptoms include a painfully sore throat, difficulty swallowing and a drool.

On the upside a drug called Galantamine is made from the plant and is used in medications to treat Alzheimers. They are also toxic to other flowers in an arrangement and should be separated and recut then placed in water for 24 hours before being returned to the vase with other flowers. Do not use a flower food with the water used in your arrangement as this will encourage the Daffodil to release its sap. They should last about a week in a vase. Although they are a ways away from blooming I can hardly wait!

Your Brain on Habits

“Monday I will start” “I will pack only healthy food” “I will go for a walk tonight” …. Have you ever found yourself saying these things to yourself? But instead, you fall into your regular routine or habits almost on autopilot and wonder why can’t you commit?

You have read, watched videos, talked to your doctor and you know what to do – Eat a balanced diet, drink more water, get adequate sleep and make sure to get at least 150 minutes of exercise a week. It sounds like a no brainer and should be easy, but if it were, you would be doing it.

Change can be hard but new habits can be established. You can blame your brain as it is likes to take the easy road. Automatic behaviours drive half of our daily life. Think about that for a moment. How much do your habits or daily routines change day to day?

A habit is any action, or sequence of actions, initiated by a cue, that gives a behavioural response which results in a reward, that our brain makes us believe it is desirable.

• Behavior: make and drink the coffee • Reward: feeling awake and more energized (Fun fact. Coffee is widely consumed, but not so much because of its natural flavour, as most people drown it in sugar or cream, but because of the habits associated around it. Growing up you probably experienced many adults who couldn’t function without their morning coffee.

It is widely accepted, a social norm, in almost every workplace, and has even developed a trendy status with many coffee shops and drive thru restaurants. Then of course, there is the chemical reaction it has on us from the caffeine and sugar - if added).

But back to the example above. This daily habit or routine has been something you have repeated for a long time and it is done without even thinking about it. This is a habit loop, just waking up triggers the cue.

Some habits are mundane with little reward and maybe easy to change, but others are more powerful and hard to change. Chocolate, cheese, or social media have strong chemical reactions that make our brains feel good and are harder to change.

Think of it this way. The brain sends feel-good messages along pathways. As a habit keeps getting repeated it gets ingrained. Think of a shortcut you may have taken on a walk off the main route. It may be to a grocery store, or to your house through your yard or a favourite park. Instead of taking the sidewalk that loops around the nice shrubbery to enter your location, you notice a break in the foliage and you take that shortcut. More and more people see this and start doing the same thing. It is now a clearly defined path or route. This is the same for our brains,

once a neural pathway for a habit is established, it becomes the default path to follow.

Eventually, your habits become as automatic, as daily functions you do, without thinking about them.

Creating new habits can take time, but are achievable.

Think about COVID and how hard it was to get used to wearing masks. I remember how uncomfortable and awkward it felt, along with being reminded to wear one. Chatting to Wellness

Loneliness is a problem experienced by many seniors across Canada.

Isolation can be bad for your health; some experts say as detrimental as alcoholism, smoking or over-eating. High degrees of loneliness can precipitate Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia.

Chatting to Wellness offers a solution. The Canada wide, free service, provides phone chats to seniors anywhere. Since 2017, their mission has been to combat senior isolation through telephone companionship, delivered by trained volunteers that are passionate about supporting quality mental health services to

the aging. Connecting with this program enables senior citizens to speak their mind, make a friend and give back by being socially engaged. There are also on-line options for communications available.

Something Exciting is Happening in Lumby Submitted by Dr. Judith Gavin/Olson On behalf of the Monashee Investors Group For the last 7 years the Monashee Community CoOp has been an important part of our community.

Its original aim was to support and encourage local sustainable agriculture while providing healthy produce and groceries. Its clientele grew; they wanted more groceries and year round produce. The Co-Op responded, has now expanded to bursting, and needs to move to a larger locale!

Finding a new larger site, at the right price, has proven challenging, if not impossible. Then the Valley First Credit Union building went up for sale and is perfect for the Co-op. It’s in a high traffic area in the centre of the retail hub of Lumby. Unfortunately, the Co-op does not have the liquidity required to buy the building.

But, all is not lost! Enter the “Monashee Community Investors Group”, a group of local people inspired by the attractive commercial opportunity in the for-

mer Credit Union building, and the desire to help the Co-op relocate. Whereas the Co-op is a Not for Profit Community Service enterprise, the Investors Group plans to incorporate and provide a competitive return on investment, while contributing to a thriving community.

The building is zoned C1, General Commercial, and has a total of 7200 square feet on two floors. With a committed tenant for the main floor, residential accommodation in short supply, and office space in demand, this is a great opportunity for people to invest locally and watch their asset appreciate in value.

This is a column meant for fun and some information About myself: I am a Freelance Photographer you often see me on the side of the road or in various places taking photos of different things animals, birds, places, people etc. l have lived in Lumby just over 8 years,you have seen my photos in the newspaper (Lumby Valley Times) and once in awhile in the Vernon Morning Star, and the Lumby Art Gallery. Photography is my passion. Disclaimer: The information on some of my photos that I write about a lot of times come from the Internet or books I research them, hopefully the facts are as close to the truth as I can come.

Another Delightful Form OF Art A long long time ago, before any of us were even thought of Mosaic was created. When they were first made, small pebbles, broken pottery, shells, Jade, glass, and anything else to make a pattern would be used making the most beautiful artwork. Using a base of Mortar or Plaster placing the pieces close together with few gaps, then filled with grouting to help seal the Mosaics and helping to make them waterproof.

Sometimes a double layer of Mortar would be placed on the artwork to give it an extra seal. It would then

be cleaned and polished.

In ancient times before writings were recorded Mosaics would be used to tell the stories. They were used on walls, ceilings, floors, Roman Baths, Vases, etc. Sometimes portraits of the deceased were made for the wall out of Mosaics. Which often were hung in Roman Bath houses.

Like Pottery items, Mosaics are usually still found in places like tombs and other spots as looters find them not to have any value so they are left behind.

This works well for archeologists, and other historians finding things from so long ago.

In some cultures Mosaics would be used in every part of the house, believing those that had the

most Mosaic would be the richest.

Mosaic work has once again become very popular, with so many artists using this form of artwork to beautify our homes.

My friend made the Mosaic artwork shown here today. It is quite pretty, and it makes me smile whenever I look at it.

I think I would like to take up this delightful form of artwork and see what kind of creations I can make myself.

Local Arts and Culture Grants 2021 It’s that time again! Even with the continuation of Covid-19 we are pleased to be putting out the call for applications for the MAC Local Arts and Culture grants. The Monashee Arts Council is sponsoring a photo competition and show for the month of April 2021. Anyone from Lumby, Cherryville, Lavington and Whitevale can enter. There are three age categories: 14 years and under, 15-24 years, and adult. Entries will be juried by local photographers Bruce Borrowman, Dale Eurich, and Mikayla Appleby. As well as prizes for each category, there will be a prize for People’s Choice determined by visitors to the Village Gallery which is hosting the show.

Thanks to the sponsorship of the Monashee Arts Council and the Regional District of the North Okanagan the Village Gallery has been able to continue its tradition of solo and group shows that feature community artists and crafters. As

A Review Of Botanicals For Menstrual Pain In Adolescents Donna Easto, C.H., H.C., M.H., Certified Herbal Educator The most common complaints associated with primary dysmenorrhea in adolescent girls are cramping and pain in the lower abdomen. Young women who experience severe symptoms should see their health care practitioner for assessment. It’s wise to rule out endometriosis, pelvic infection, uterine fibroids and other possible causes.

Generally, botanical medicine employs antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory herbs to reduce pain and improve pelvic circulation in primary dysmenorrhea. Rarely used singly, the herbs are combined into a customized prescription for the young woman. A typical formula may include Cramp Bark, Chamomile, Motherwort and Ginger.

Black Cohosh root: A uterine antispasmodic and mild sedative. It has a long history of use for uterine pain among indigenous North Americans. (not for use in pregnancy, lactation or ER-sensitive cancers) Cramp Bark/Black Haw root: Two herbs close enough in their actions to be used interchangeably as antispasmodics and analgesics. Containing salicylates, they are effective uterine muscle relaxants. For dragging pressure in the groin and drawing pain in the legs, these herbs are beneficial. Like Black Cohosh, they are mildly sedating and useful in treating mild to moderate headaches. A Cannabis-Cramp Bark tincture is a

classic for menstrual pain relief.

Wild Yam root: Another herb from traditional indigenous medicine, Wild Yam was used in treating dysmenorrhea by Native Americans and Eclectic physicians. Today, it is considered a reliable antispasmodic for uterine cramping and urinary tract infection when used in combination combined with other herbs. (possible interaction with hormonal contraceptives, contraindicated in hormone-dependent cancers, be alert to progesterone adulterated products) Ginger root: If irritable bowel-type complaints accompany period pain, anti-inflammatory Ginger taken in capsule or tincture form will help. It’s often included in formulas with other herbs. (avoid if you have gallstones, peptic ulcer disease or GERD) Cinnamon bark: We don’t often think of cinnamon as anything other than a tasty addition to drinks and desserts. However, a recent study with women taking two 420mg capsules of dried cinnamon bark powder three times daily during the first three days of their period reported significantly reduced pain, heavy bleeding, nausea and vomiting in primary dysmenorrhea. (possible hypoglycemic action, caution if diabetic) Hemp Seeds: Women with period pain caused by inflammation may be low in GLA (gamma-linolenic acid.) A daily dose of 5 mL of hemp seed oil over 12 weeks significantly improved symptoms in one study.

Seniors are receiving their Old Age Pension and Canada Pension slips; the banks are issuing their T-5’s for interest earned and RRSP/RRIF’s are being dealt with.

I must again highlight my favourite adaptogen, Ashwagandha, as a general restorative tonic for the nervous system.

Among other actions, it helps with irritability, anxiety and insomnia.

Note: Vitex agnus castus is a common part of a treatment plan for menorrhagia (excessive menstrual bleeding.) However, it is not indicated when treating primary dysmenorrhea in adolescents, where the goal is to relieve symptoms.

Harissa Shakshuka (one-pan meal) Ingredients: • 3 tbsp olive oil • 1 28 oz can crushed tomatoes with juice • 1 large onion, halved and thinly sliced • 1 red bell pepper, seeded and diced • 1 ½ tbsp Organic Harissa Seasoning • ¼ tsp Organic Ground Black Pepper • 1 cup fresh spinach • 4 eggs • 1 tsp Organic Parsley Flakes • ⅓ cup crumbled feta cheese • 1 avocado, diced (optional) • Fresh baguette or bread, toasted

Directions: Heat olive oil over medium heat in a 12-inch skillet with lid. Add onion and red pepper. Cook until onion soft and translucent. Reduce heat to medium-low.

Stir in tomatoes with juice, Harissa Seasoning and Black Pepper. Simmer 15 minutes until sauce is thickened. Add spinach and stir until wilted. Make 4 wells in the sauce and crack in eggs. Cover and cook until eggs are set, 5-8 minutes. Remove from heat and sprinkle with parsley, feta and diced avocado. Serve
