I’ve Been Setting Aside Money To Plant Some Pussy Willow Shrubs…It’s My Hedge Fund!

The Pussy Willow

As the weather slowly warms more areas of the yard are becoming visible exposing a lot of mud lol. The daylight hours continue to lengthen and there is a significant increase in the hours of sunshine for which I am grateful as I find this one of the hardest times of the year as I patiently wait for more signs of spring.

The stems of many shrubs and trees are turning colour indicating life and one of the very first signs of spring is the Pussy Willow. It will appear before the Crocuses or even the first signs of Daffodil or Tulip.

I was just given by a good friend, some cuttings of her Pussy Willows and I am thrilled that I will now have my own. Thank You! It can be a tree through grafting or a shrub that can grow up to 20 feet high although new varieties usually only grow to 8 to 10 feet. There are several varieties of Pussy Willow which includes The Giant, Black, Japanese Pink, Rose - Gold and the Goat Willow. The cuttings I have been given have a slight pink tinge and am told it is a French Pussy Willow. They are famed for their fussy nubs called Catkins and their colourful fall leaves. They are used in floral arrangements, wreaths and basket making.

They are easy to propagate by either placing stems in water or directly placing the stems in moist soil. The cuttings should be at least a foot in length and the thickness of a pencil. These cuttings should always be planted in the direction that they grow. They prefer a slightly acidic soil that is well drained but do need continuous moisture and they will also benefit from some added compost. They are long lived and do not

require a great deal of maintenance. Pussy Willows are a good plant for pollinators and birds due to there early arrival after a long, cold winter while other pollinating and nectar producing plants are scarce and they also produce lots of both pollen and nectar. It can be an aggressive plant with its deep spreading roots and care should be taken to avoid planting near water or sewer pipes, septic fields or tanks and swimming pools. They are extremely good for areas that are experiencing soil erosion issues. Kalamalka Therapeutic Massage

New Residential Waste Collection Coming Soon Council has approved a new residential waste collection program as a way to reduce the amount of waste being sent out the landfill.

The new program includes the following: • weekly containerized food waste collection (residents will be provided a specific 57 litre container for food waste) • bi-weekly containerized garbage collection (residents will be provided a specific 240 litre container for garbage) • bi-weekly recycling collection will continue through the current contractor The decision to divert food waste is based on the RDNO's Solid Waste Management Plan recommendations, where approximately 30% of the waste stream is

made up of organic material. For tips on reducing food waste click here. Diverted food waste will be collected by the waste contractor and processed at the Spa Hills Compost Facility. Spa Hills advises that "by collecting food waste and other organic material that would otherwise go to a landfill and make chemical-free fertilizer from it, with uses such as for the land we farm, where we grow wheat, corn & other crops to feed to our livestock. We also sell the finished compost."

The next steps in implementation of the new program will include the development and distribution of educational material outlining the program, what is permitted in each container, collection frequency, as well as other tips on waste reduction.

The waste collection contractor, SCV Waste Solutions, along with the Village of Lumby will be providing updates soon.

Metabolism and our Weight

You’ve read in my recent past “New Years resolutions” corners, about foods to eat and different types of exercise to help with weight loss goals. Lots of times you will hear the word metabolism, interchangeably with weight loss, as it’s an easy reference. When people refer to their metabolism being slow—as a cause to weight gain or inability to lose weight—they typically are referring to metabolic rate. Metabolic rate in simple terms, is the rate at which your body uses energy or burns calories. We sometimes think of this, as in only burning body fat, but there are many other processes that metabolism is responsible for. Activity of our major organs, brain, liver, kidneys, and heart account for about half of the energy burned at rest. Fat, the digestive system, and especially the body's muscles account for the other half.

You can see there are many components to metabolic-rate. But in relation to weight loss, there are things you can do to adjust your rate.

1. Calculate your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR).

BMR measures the total calories you need to perform the body’s most basic functions, like breathing, circulation, brain activity, and cellular activities – or what it would take to maintain your body at rest all day.

2. Calculate your Active Metabolic Rate (AMR).

Your AMR represents the number of calories you need to consume each day, to stay or maintain at your current weight. For weight loss, AMR either needs to go up with more exercise, or a decrease in calories needs to be established for a calorie deficit. But be careful as these should go hand in hand, meaning you shouldn’t exercise yourself to extreme exhaustion or implement such an extreme calorie deficit that you barely able to function.

3. Have a productive exercise program that includes resistance training and eat a balanced diet. Types of foods you eat can make a difference as there is another level of energy being spent or used during eating and digestion, known as the Thermic Effect of Food (TEF).

It takes energy to digest, absorb, break down, and store nutrients. See how the TEF on the following macronutrients has:

• Protein requires the most energy to digest and metabolize, so it has the highest TEF. • Carbohydrates require less energy than protein, and the more complex the carbohydrate, the higher the TEF. Starch and fiber have higher energy demands than simple sugars in high glycemic foods as explained in a previous corner.

• Unfortunately, the TEF of fat takes very little energy to digest, absorb, and store fat.

Overall, the TEF can account for as much as 10 percent of calories burned per day.

But wait! There is still one more thing that affects your metabolic burn and that is vitamins and minerals. Although, these do not provide direct energy, they do play vital roles in metabolism. Think of it this way - a fire burns hot with a lot of energy released.

But you need something to start the fire with, like a match – this would be the vitamins and minerals.

Lastly, get adequate sleep, this is crucial for metabolic function (underlying metabolic processes happen at rest to help us repair, reset and regulate appetite) Things that may hinder your metabolism to where you have little control are, genetics/family history, certain medications, and certain diseases/conditions.

Treat Your Feet

Changes in the way a person walks are quite common as they get older. Unfortunately, changes in your stride can eventually lead to some problems with your feet and when your feet hurt, it is difficult to stay moving. It is much more likely to have problems after the age of 55 but many of these issues can be avoided by taking a few very simple steps.

Of course, the best way to catch problems early is to check your feet on a regular basis. Look for cracks, blisters, sores, swelling, or any changes in skin color.

You may require some help accomplishing this and many seniors do not even realize that they have blis-

ter or callous issues. It is important to have a friend, family member or health care provider examine the soles of your feet from time to time.

As we age, the need for proper footwear becomes increasingly crucial. Now, poorly fitting shoes can do more than cause pain. Shoes should be made of natural materials such as leather or canvas, as synthetics encourage sweating. Here are some suggestions to help your find the right fit: • Shop for shoes at the end of the day to allow for swollen feet.

• Have your feet measured while standing, and buy your shoes to fit the larger foot.

• Don’t try to “break in” a shoe – it should be comfortable right from the start.

• Be sure there is ¼ to ½ inch of room between the tip of the longest toe to the tip of the shoe.

• Make sure shoes are wide and deep enough for your feet and fit snugly at the heel.

An ideal shoe for a senior citizen should have a low heel, a shock absorbing sole, rounded toe area, and leather or canvas upper.

This is a column meant for fun and some information About myself: I am a Freelance Photographer you often see me on the side of the road or in various places taking photos of different things animals, birds, places, people etc. l have lived in Lumby just over 8 years,you have seen my photos in the newspaper (Lumby Valley Times) and once in awhile in the Vernon Morning Star, and the Lumby Art Gallery. Photography is my passion. Disclaimer: The information on some of my photos that I write about a lot of times come from the Internet or books I research them, hopefully the facts are as close to the truth as I can come.

A Very Famous Board Game Renewed Do you remember being a kid, and the board games would come out. The family would sit around the table, the most famous one in our house was Monopoly. Monopoly has been around for what seems forever.

Did you know that before Charles Darrow had sold this game to Parker Brothersthat it had actually been created by a different person.

Born to James Magie a newspaper publisher and abolitionist that had been with Lincoln travelling with him in Illinois during the late 1850s debating politics with other people like Stephen Douglas in 1866 Elizabeth (Lizzie) Magie arrived one year after Lincoln had been assassinated.

In 1933 Lizzie Magie had created this game in 1902 in her home calling it "THE LANDLORD'S GAME" a legal file had been made by Lizzie in 1903 for the game that she patented in 1904. This Landlord's game had been made for a protest against Andrew Carnegie and John D. Rockefeller, these people were the big Monopolists of that era.

Lizzie only made a small amount of $500.00 from this game.

In 1933 Charles Darrow made a claim that he invented the game changing the name from The Landlord's Game to Monopoly selling it to Parker Brothers , Charles made millions.

Lizzie had fought him on this in 1936, having interviews with the Washington Post and the Evening Star, showing the newspapers a photographer's lens proving she was the first creator of the game. The thought was that she had used up her money in Lawyers fees, Printer Fees,and Patent Office Fees to develop the game, getting her lost somewhere. Lizzie died in 1948, she had no children to carry on her legacy, her headstone and her obituary did not mention her creation.

Charles Darrow, became a millionaire when selling this game to Parker Brothers, Parker Brothers were failing at this time, and when they bought the game from Charles it brought them back up to where they could keep their company alive again. When first try-

Dysmenorrhea Donna Easto, C.H., H.C., M.H., Certified Herbal Educator During my herbal training, I sometimes found it difficult to remember the different terms and definitions for common menstrual disorders. It can be confusing, so I offer up the following as a guide to the disorders ending with ‘menorrhea’: • Amenorrhea: Absence of menses • Dysmenorrhea: Painful menstruation • Hypomenorrhea: Regular but scant menstruation • Oligomenorrhea: Infrequent menstrual cycles • Oligohypermenorrhea: Infrequent and heavy bleeding • Oligohypomenorrhea: Infrequent and scant bleeding • Polymenorrhea: Frequent menses (less than 21 days between) Dysmenorrhea, difficult menstruation, presents itself in many ways. The pain can be bearable or intense, come in waves or be constant, and it may radiate to the lower back and legs. Pain can be accompanied by headache, backache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, constipation and diarrhea. If that isn’t enough, the pain and other symptoms can begin before menstruation starts and persist for the first three days of the period. It’s the primary cause of absenteeism from school and employment.

Many women turn to analgesics and NSAIDs for relief.

If those don’t do the trick, conventional treatment depends on PGSIs (prostaglandin synthetase inhibitors) and oral contraceptives. PGSIs act quickly to reduce pain; side effects may include GI upset, edema and skin rash. Oral contraceptives also decrease prostaglandins; side effects may include weight gain and depression; they’re not recommended for women who smoke, have high blood pressure or have blood clotting issues.

Botanical treatments are highly effective for reducing pain and inflammation. A herbalist will first determine the main features of the dysmenorrhea as congestive or

spasmodic. Congestive is defined as having scant or difficult blood flow, pressure or dull aching in the pelvis and a spongy feeling in the uterus.

Spasmodic dysmenorrhea presents with spastic, cramping pain. Dysmenorrhea is further divided into two types: primary and secondary. Primary happens with the onset of menstrual cycles, just before and through the first hours of menses. It typically improves over time. Symptoms of Secondary dysmenorrhea can occur during, after or before the menses. It first appears between twenty and forty years of age and typically worsens over time.

The goal when treating congestive is to relieve the congestion and improve pelvic circulation and tone. The major herbs used may include ginger, yarrow, motherwort, red raspberry leaf. The goal in treating spasmodic is to reduce spasms and pain. The major herbs used may include cramp bark, black cohosh, Jamaican dogwood and pulsatilla. An anti-inflammatory diet and supplementation with fish oils can be beneficial.

Next week we’ll take a deep dive into the botanicals and supplements used for dysmenorrhea. Until then, here’s a simple recipe that may help: Analgesic-Antispasmodic Oil Combine ½ teaspoon of Chamomile, Fennel, Caraway and Peppermint pure essential oils in four ounces of olive oil. Store at room temperature. Massage 1-2 tsp into the lower abdomen and cover with heat. Be sure to first check for skin sensitivity on your inner wrist.

CN Police Want to Raise Awareness about Safe Behaviour when Operating Snowmobiles near Railway Tracks CN Police officers are spreading a rail safety message in British Columbia. Last year in North America, there were over 3,400 collisions with trains, resulting in over 2,200 serious injuries or fatalities. Rail safety is a core value at CN and CN Police wants to be a part of the effort to minimize the risk of incidents related to the use of snowmobiles.

Riding a snowmobile is a great way to enjoy British Columbia outdoors when done safely, but people must remember that snowmobiles and railway tracks are not a good combination. Railway yards, tracks, tunnels and bridges are private property. Riding along

or on railway tracks or taking a shortcut across tracks is not only illegal, it can be fatal. CN Police will be on patrol throughout the province and want to send a strong safety reminder not to trespass on railway tracks or property.

Coffeecan Casserole You will need: • 1 lb. ground beef • 3 lb. clean coffeecan • 4 small potatoes • Sharp knife, small • 4 small carrots • Vegetable peeler • 2 small onions • Grater • Salt • Aluminum foil • Pepper Directions: 1. Have your adult assistant help you

Apple Ring Dessert You will need: • 1 or 2 apples • Paper towel or clean cloth • ¼ cup peanut butter, chunky or smooth • Measuring cup • Small bowl • ¼ cup chocolate sauce • Small mixing spoon • Sharp small knife • Table knife Directions: 1. Wash the apples with clear water and dry with a clean towel.

2. Mix the peanut butter and chocolate sauce together until well blended.

3. Using the knife, cut the core out of the apples.

Perhaps your adult assistant can help you.

4. Slice the apples into rings making the slices as thick or as think as you want them.

5. Spread each apple slice with the peanut butter and chocolate mixture.

6. Sprinkle with chopped nuts or grated coconut if you want to.

HINT: Mix 1 cup peanut butter and1 cup chocolate sauce and keep it in a covered jar so you have it on hand.

2021 camping season reservations opening for B.C. residents

The official start of the 2021 camping season is still a few months away, but people living in B.C. can soon begin reserving campsites in provincial parks to help plan trips close to home.

The Discover Camping reservation service opens March 8, 2021, giving B.C. residents an opportunity to book a campsite two months in advance of their arrival date. People who live in the province will have priority access to campsite reservations throughout the summer.

"Our provincial parks have never been as important as they are right now. They provide a special place to safely connect with nature and improve our health and well-being during these difficult times," said

George Heyman, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy. "We are all looking forward to another summer of camping and outdoor recreation in B.C., and while public health concerns and advice remain, we are asking people to pick a campground as close to home as possible to avoid long road trips and non-essential travel."

Reservations can be made no further than two months out from arrival. Since COVID-19 is still impacting the province and travel opportunities are limited, this year's camping season is expected to be busy. BC Parks appreciates that a positive camping experience starts the moment a site is booked, so it is important to be prepared with back up options for preferred sites and dates.
