November 11 2021 marks the 100th anniversary of the Remembrance Day Poppy.

Remembrance Day will be Thursday, November 11, 2021, due to Covid 19 there will not be a parade again this year. Our Lounge and office will be closed.

Official Wreaths will be placed at the Cenotaph by the Legion Executives. We will have a small ceremony at the Cenotaph. If you would like to be there please remember to stand 6 feet apart, if you cannot do this, wearing a mask is recommended.

Attention to All our Members in Good Standing – The Legion Needs You Do you have a little extra time each month? Our executive board has some positions open.

Please consider stepping up to help our branch continue its mission in our community.

Legion Elections are coming up in November 2021.

Here are the positions that will be available: President; 1st Vice President, and 2ndVice President For these positions you must have been on our executive at least once in the past 3 years.

We also have 8 spots to fill on our executive.

These positions are for 1 year, and run from Installation in January to the next Installation.

Please drop into the lounge and add your name to the ballot, or call in and our steward will add your name for you.

Elections will be November 17 if you cannot attend please send in / drop off a letter stating you are willing to run for whichever position.

As all General Meetings are suspended for the time being, we will have elections by ballot, Monday and

Home Invaders

I hope you all have been enjoying out late and beautiful fall weather this last little reprieve is the optimum time to go a little further with the winter shut down chores that need to be completed before the onslaught of our winter weather. Although it still looks like good weather for a while yet I am keeping an eye on my Maple tree in the back yard as I usually just get these leaves up before the permanent snow hits and it is almost all yellow now with a few leaves on the ground. Thanks to a good friend I am on track to be complete with the major chores that need to be completed. Thanks a Million Bonny! Although I have covered this topic before it bares mentioning again as now it the time to keep pest and critters from joining you for the winters respite.

Many animals and creatures are now preparing for the long cold winter and some of them have your home as an ideal place to spend it. Most of these if not all will be unwelcome. Spiders, Mice and Rats, Stink Bugs, Ear Wigs and Silver Fish, and the good old Cockroach all need a good home for the winter. Most are harmless, others not so much but all are annoying.

They enter in through doors, windows, small openings in foundations, around pipes and cables entering your house, vents, chimneys and other small spaces.

Mice can enter a home through an opening less than the diameter of a pencil, they can jump, climb and swim. They leave behind about 100 feces droppings per day and constant micro droplets of urine that carry many different types of pathogens. They chew wiring that can lead to fire and use various soft materials to nest and can have a half dozen babies every three weeks. Although they have poor eye sight they have a good ears and a great sense of smell and are very adaptable to their environment.

Spiders are mostly way smaller than Mice so they can gain access through even smaller spaces. They are attracted by moisture and food in the form of dead flies. Many people are terrified of spiders but we only have a few really poisonous spiders in our area and these with proper treatment are not fatal. The Brown Recluse and the Black Widow which I have

actually had experience with can cause pain and infection, not pleasant if you aren’t fond of IV antibiotics a couple times a day for a week. For those who are truly terrified of spiders you have only one option, they do not exist in the Antarctic. They tend to like dark, cool places such as wood piles, attics and basements and can be aggressive when disturbed. They dislike citrus fruit like lemons and limes, Eucalyptus, Peppermint oil and leaves and vinegar. This can be used to discourage them from entering your home by applying these scents around windows and doors, be sure to clear up dead and crawling insects in your home including attics and basements by vacuuming often and thoroughly and remove any spider webs.

Outside lighting does not attract spiders but it does attract their food source so use sparingly. Spiders are nocturnal, have poor eyesight and rely on vibration in the air and ground to hunt and navigate their environment. Many people swear that by placing Horse Chestnut also known as Conkers around the house will discourage them. Drill holes in the ends of the chestnuts and place them around the house in the attic, basement, cold room and laundry. They are poisonous to animals so keep them out of reach or put them in mesh bags to prevent any problems.

Ear Wigs hibernate over the winter. They are drawn into your home by moisture, warmth and food all things ideal for reproduction. They do not do damage to your home, they are just annoying, Somewhat related to them is the Silver Fish they too like dark, damp environments in basements, attics, bathrooms and kitchens. They do do damage to your home.

They love paper and will do damage to books, wall paper and clothing. They will invade food sources not properly stored in sealed air tight containers like cereals, rice, pasta, flour and sugar but they can survive a long time without a food source and reproduce rapidly. They are not spreaders of disease but there is nothing worse than pouring milk on your cereal in the morning and finding these floating about. Stink Bugs do hibernate over the winter. It is called Diapause, they do not feed and are relatively inactive over the

winter. They do no damage and do not spread disease just annoying especially when they wake up mid winter for a quick fly about. They attract others to your home by using a pheromone so do not step on them to kill them as your shoes will bring that irresistible aroma into your home.

There are a few more pests that may make an appearance in your home but the prevention and treatment is about the same. Seal door and window frames with caulking and door brush strips.

Openings that lead into your home from pipes, wires or cracks should be sealed or use steel mesh to plug them. Put screens over vents, this must be done all over the house including roof and chimney. Keep fire wood at least 20 feet from your home. Remove vegetation and tree limbs that are up against your house. These are also good fire mitigation procedures as was mentioned last week. Proper storage of food stuffs, make sure that items brought into the house from outside or garages are not contaminated. On that cheery note I wish you Happy Gardening!!!

Menopausal Years, Symptoms, Tips and Management - Part 2 Last corner I laid out the stages of Menopause including Peri and Post. In this corner I am going to explain the different hormones and how they impact the body. These hormones start having an impact during the first change in life into puberty. There is lots of education in this area and into the fertile- pregnancy years, but then fizzles off into the Menopausal years.

Information is out there if you know where to get it, and are able to connect the dots with the signs and symptoms. There can be some common symptoms, but it’s the not so common ones where a woman can feel alone or frustrated. Below are the functions of some of the key hormones that should be understood.

Causes of low estrogen: • Over exercise, to the point where it impacts daily life in a negative way • Eating disorders • A low or deficient functioning pituitary gland • Genetic irregularities, toxin or autoimmune condition that causes premature ovarian failure • Chronic kidney disease or turner syndrome

Estrogen is a steroid sex hormone which includes 3 steroid hormones estrone (E1), estradiol (E2) and estriol (E3). These give you curves, support a balanced mood, improve memory, help with strong bones, strengthen immunity, and keeps skin plump and moisturized.

Other more specific symptoms that may be more relevant to women over 40 are, perimenopause or menopause, in where levels naturally drop.

Progesterone is also a steroid sex hormone that stimulates and regulates important functions, playing a role in maintaining pregnancy, preparing the body for conception and regulating the monthly menstrual cycle. Progesterone’s job is to maintain the uterine lining which also helps to prevent the development of endometrial cancer. Its job is to maintain a pregnancy, should your egg be fertilized during that cycle. If an egg isn’t fertilized, progesterone levels drop, triggering menstruation. Progesterone is also a calming, mood, sleep, libido and bone-enhancing hormone. It is made from cholesterol and released from the corpus luteum a temporary organ (part of the ovary).

The Impact of Estrogen and Progesterone:

• High estrogen – If progesterone is low in relation to estrogen, then there possibly is estrogen dominant symptoms • Insulin resistance or PCOS - polycystic ovarian syndrome • Inflammation – from a gut infection, food allergy or other root cause

• Heart palpitations (due to rise and fall of estrogen) • Miscarriage You may also find that your bones fracture or break more easily. This may be due to a decrease in bone density. Estrogen works in conjunction with calcium, vitamin D, and other minerals to keep bones strong.

If your estrogen levels are low, you may experience decreased bone density.

Also, in the fertile years if left untreated, low estrogen can lead to infertility in women.

Some causes of low progesterone: • Stress and it’s connection to cortisol (next corner for this one) • Low thyroid hormone • Age – as we move into peri-menopause there may be more anovulatory cycles and then no progesterone production in menopause

This is a column meant for fun and some information About myself: I am a Freelance Photographer you often see me on the side of the road or in various places taking photos of different things animals, birds, places, people etc. l have lived in Lumby for over 8 years, you have seen my photos in the newspaper (Lumby Valley Times) and once in awhile in the Vernon Morning Star, and the Lumby Art Gallery. Photography is my passion. Disclaimer: The information on some of my photos that I write about a lot of times come from the Internet or books I research them, hopefully the facts are as close to the truth as I can come.

It Was A Beautiful Day For the last couple of months my life has been pretty hectic, and a little stressful. As most of you know by now, Tim and I got Married just last week. Yup, we did it.

Here's what transpired before the Wedding Day: Everything was planned out, how many people would be attending, who would walk me down the aisle, who would do the photography, what band would play, what would my flowers be, etc.etc.

The weatherman said it might rain, well okay nothing I can do about that.

My good friend Dolores from Kelowna and I went dress shopping on a Sunday in Kelowna. I wasn't shopping for a regular wedding dress, as white is just not my style.

So we didn't want to go to a wedding dress store. Before shopping we stopped at Milestones to have a good lunch.

From there we went to Orchard Park Mall, we stopped at a dozen stores, and did not find any dresses that I would like to wear. Then we went downtown Bernard there were a couple of stores there, but again nothing jumped out to me. After hours and hours of endless shopping, I could feel the stress level rising, we were burnt out, and called it

quits. We decided to go again the following Friday. Once again we were shopping in Kelowna, we stopped at one store, and wow you should have seen all the beautiful dresses. This was the store for sure, after trying on about 7 dresses, and one of them twice, bang there it was, the one I tried on twice. This was the one, too bad we hadn't gone to this store the first time. Oh well, it was fun, and the stress level geared down a bit.

Ok, then there was the question of the flowers, what was I going to do? There it was, the stress level starting to rise again. My friend went to an online auction and what do you know, there was a flower store in Kelowna that was auctioning off a specified amount for flowers. Dolores won the bid! Whew! Stress level falling a little bit more.

Okay finding the photographer was another chore. The people I asked were not available, so I thought I would just put my camera on the remote and take the pics myself. But in the back of my mind I knew this might not work out, and the stress level was very high now. Tada!

A friend of mine from years ago, Tina, came to the rescue. The photography was covered. Hooray, stress levels are dropping again a bit.

Now the band, we had it all worked out. But then two of the band members could not make it. "Oh No" I thought now what?

So the stress level went up again, how can you have a Wedding without music?

Stu, came to my rescue, and suggested that he and two other band members Dennis and Fred would be happy to play for us. This was awesome! The stress levels definitely came down now.

Then probably the biggest stress happened. Who would walk me down the aisle? The person that was at first going to do this could not make it. I was feeling very anxious, as even though it was not a traditional wedding I still wanted to have certain things, including something new, something old, something borrowed, something blue, and being walked down the aisle, after all it is my first wedding. My friends

Dawn and Cyrilla took care of the new, old, borrowed, and blue so that was good. But the dilemma and stress still remained, who would walk me down the aisle? My friend Dolores from Kelowna called me and said" I have known you for over 30 years, I will be more than happy to walk you down the aisle!" "Why Not" I thought. The stress was relieved, I could breathe again. So Dolores walked me down the aisle, Tim was waiting at the altar for me. We both said I do, in the little Lumby United Church, the ladies from the church had added some artificial flowers to the rows of the pews, they looked wonderful. Just so you know, it was even more special as apparently our wedding has been the first wedding in the church for 35 years. I felt honored to be able to have our wedding there. We had some photos taken outside the church, it did not rain the whole time, it was a beautiful day.

After the photos were taken, we then went to the Legion and had a small reception, following the Covid 19 rules of course. Everyone was fully vaccinated, and wearing their mask when not seated. My friend Jo had lent me her Cake Knife, and also the Bride and Groom Cake Topping, it was great I could cut the cake.The 3 person band played in the background. They were awesome!

It is funny how when I see people now they ask me "how is married life"? Well, really it is not that much different than before. We still do the same things we were doing before the wedding, except now we both wear our rings.

I would like to thank everyone for helping Tim, and I put this all together, and making it all so much fun, joining us at the church and or the reception. It is a very good feeling to have such Great Friends and I am grateful for every single one of you.

By the way, the Stress from the last couple of months concerning the Wedding is now gone.

Call for Holiday Artists and Crafters Once again from November 15th to December 24th the Monashee Arts Council will be hosting a Christmas market at the Village Gallery to bring together artisans and shoppers for this Christmas season in a way that still respects current health regulations while promoting the enjoyment of the local seasonal shopping experience.

Deadline for applications will be Nov 13th, we ask that artists provide 3-4 pieces as well as a, photo, Bio with a description of work and business cards.

Mood Rings and Yellow Brick Roads

By Donna Easto Mood rings seem to be making a comeback. It’s no surprise that if your ring turns black, it’s not a good sign but blue, purple or pink indicate your moods are in good shape. The most common colour for a mood ring to display is somewhere between blue and green, with green being a transitional colour between unsettled orange and upbeat blue.

When it comes to music however, the colour blue in song titles leads the way with black a close second.

My love of yellow (submarine, brick road, taxi) comes in second last to hazel (Kelly Clarkson’s Behind These Hazel Eyes) What are your favourite “colour” songs, do you “see” songs in colour? If you’re one of the lucky people who live in a world where thoughts, sounds and words are multi-coloured, (synesthesia) you’re in good company. Writer Vladimir Nabokov, artist Vincent Van Gogh and musicians Duke Ellington and Franz Liszt all experienced one of their senses through colour.

Are there places where you feel happier? According to the North American Mental Health Professional Advice Council, there are happy colours and there are sad colours. The field of colour psychology explores the impact of colours in relation to human behaviour, to help us understand why we suddenly crave moody blues, or as my cousin once did, paint the entire inside of the house black.

According to the NAMHPAC, the sad colours in order of sadness are: #1 black, the colour of mourning, sadness and fear.

It can make us feel intimidated and unapproachable because it's linked with authority and power.

Every Hallowe’en we see villains garbed in black costumes roaming our streets. #2 dark blues, although lighter shades produce feelings of calm, dark shades are said to create a cold, unfeeling atmosphere. #3 grays, a dull, moody sad colour that can cause feelings of loneliness and isolation. #4 greens, while green can be soothing and relaxing it’s all in the balance. Too much can make us moody and lazy, too little can cause feelings of apathy and rejection. #5 dark purples, can make you feel gloomy, irritable and arrogant while lighter tones encourage spirituality, creativity and sensitivity. #6 beiges, really neither sad nor happy beiges are downright boring. #7 dark browns, make us sad and wistful.

But what about happy colours? According to an alternative medicine system called chromotherapy, some happy colours in no particular order are: #1 red, energizing and invoragating when you’re feeling tired or down. However, it’s powerful medicine and is used carefully in colour therapy. #2 blue, used to treat depression and pain, darker blues have sedative properties and may be used in treating sleep disorders. #3 green, the colour of nature (forest bathing) helps relieve stress. #4 yellow, improves your mood making you happy

and optimistic. #5 orange, for happy emotions and a good appetite.

Regardless of the experts, if a certain colour makes you feel sad, it’s not for you, and one person’s happy colour may not be yours. Be intentional about the colours you choose, from your clothes to your walls.

The brightness, tint, tone, shade and whether a colour is cool or warm-toned all have an influence on your mood and behaviour. It’s been proven that a lack of colour in the workplace, like a neutral gray, will actually increase the risk of burnout and decrease productivity. Workplaces and homes that encourage natural elements like green leaves and sunlight are positively relaxing.

Last year we held our fundraiser online too, and we were still able to raise $5,765.00, given to Old Friends Canada Society in Lake Country. In 2020 since we were not out soliciting for donations (because of Covid), we only offered a handful of prizes versus our usual 100+ on the auction tables at our banquet. But those handful of prizes still had our Horsey gals and others buying tickets to win any one of them!

This year, again, we are selling $20 tickets towards any of the prizes on offer. A $20 ticket will get your name entered once for a prize (let us know which one). For every $20 increment, your name is entered again, for that prize or another one – your choice.

This year our committee will give the ticket proceeds to “Forever Home Sanctuary” located in Lavington BC. Their mission is: To provide a healthy, caring, loving and safe home to abused, neglected, and/or un-

wanted (small) farm animals. A Forever Home!

Sherman (Depree) Legion’s 2021 National Poppy Campaign Set To Launch

Unique new features will be part of the Royal Canadian Legion’s 2021 National Poppy Campaign which officially begins on Friday, October 29th. New features are being implemented in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Poppy symbol this year, and to increase the creative and convenient ways in which donors can support the yearly campaign.

“We are pleased to expand our Poppy campaign this year and happy to once again work alongside some great partners to make it all happen,” says Dominion President Bruce Julian. “Because of these collective efforts, Canadians will be able to donate in new and engaging ways to support our Veterans - even in the midst of the pandemic.”

Traditional Poppy boxes will still be used for cash donations and lapel poppy distribution. As part of an ongoing pilot project launched in 2020, the Legion’s “Pay Tribute” tap and pay boxes will be featured once again. The digital boxes will offer new donation amount options and traditional poppies. The number of locations across the country will increase to 1000.

More details will follow upon the official campaign launch.

Donors will also be able to donate directly through the Legion’s national website. Close to 20 million dollars is donated during the National Poppy Campaign each year and goes directly into initiatives to support Canada’s Veterans.

July 6, 1944 - October 19, 2021

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Dave after a courageous battle with cancer.

Dave is predeceased by his Father Walter Cox and Mother Hazel Cox. He is survived by his (sister) Carol Ann McGarr, (brother) Bruce Cox, (Children) Darren, Jeffery, Stephen & Melissa. Dave also leaves behind his wife of 33 years, Vi Cox. Dave grew up in St.Catherine’s Ontario.

Dave had many jobs throughout his life and retired as a Line Painter .

Marie Sherman, born Jan 25, 1937 in New Westminster, BC, passed away peacefully on Oct 8, 2021.

Marie a classy lady of large stature in both height and recognition led an interesting life.

Corporal Marie Depree of the Canadian Armed Forces (1957-1962) competed in discus in both the British Empire Games and the Pan American Games. Named Canadian champion in 1958 and inducted to the CAF Sports Hall of Fame in 1976.

Dave married Vi in 1988 and they made the move to Lumby in 1993 where he made many special friends.

Marie continued on with careers as a nurse, prison guard and owner/operator of Echo Lake Fishing Resort in Lumby BC. In retirement Marie did volunteer work for the MS Society of Vernon BC.

He loved and adored his wife Vi and cared for her, always putting her needs first. He also adored his cats “Bella”, and “Tigger”.

In her spare time Marie could be seen reading, doing crosswords, shopping or spending time with her family.

He was the first one to lend a hand to those in need.

She will be missed by her daughter Christine (Darrin), daughter-in-law Wendy, grandchildren Ryan Scheidt (Sierra), Bobbe Koenig (Nik), Jenny, great grandson Finn Koenig and many friends and extended family.

Dave remained strong, courageous and independent through his journey, yet he still managed to have his quick witt, humour and ability to smile right to the end.

Special Thank you to Jenny at the White Valley Resource Center, Daryl and Rose, Susan, Dave Ferguson, and the Drs and Nurses at Polson Tower, floor 7, for helping care for Dave’s needs.

He will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Marie was predeceased by her husband Richard (Dick) and son Harrison (Andy). May they rest in peace together.

Many thanks to the care staff at Monashee Mews in Lumby, BC.
