The Knights were first on the board but the Stars answered back with Grady Krause setting up his brother Tye Krause. Tori Maltman put in the go-ahead goal with a sweet pass from T. Krause at the end of the first period. Tye Krause punched in two more goals to have a hat trick for the day. Ryder Quibell had an assist and sniped 2 goals with great passing from Zachary Young who picked up 2 assists.

Photos and Memories From The Lumby Museum

Lew Chow's Wing's Cafe and Boarding House was located on Shuswap Avenue, across from today's Beauty & the Barber shop. Any young fisherman lucky enough to catch a salmon in the creek could trade that fish for a soda pop so Lew could make "fishy soup".

A special highlight in Lew Chow's life was in 1951 when he was able to bring his grandson, Yick Man Lew from China to Lumby. Yick Man Lew would eventually become the spare head-sawyer at Lumby Timber.

Yick Man married BoHar and together they had one daughter (Linda) and two sons (William & Charles).

Sadly, Lew Chow and Yick Man Lew died one day apart.

What Do You Use To Mend Jack-O-Lantern?... A Pumpkin Patch!

Fall Clean Up and Fire Mitigation

There is always so much to do in the fall with the yard and garden and with the extreme heat that we experienced this summer and the fires that surrounded our area and yet spared us. As we saw in Lytton this summer and areas around Vernon and West Side Road a small community can be lost to fire and much can be lost with even just an evacuation. With pleasantly warm fall weather continuing for the next little while some additional effort in the fall clean up can help with the next summers heat wave.

Although we know that covering vents such as in attics and crawl spaces with wire mesh can help keep rodents and other pest out of the house the use of wire screens this can also help with keeping airborne embers from getting into your home during a fire. It should be 1/8 of an inch and no smaller as it can prevent good air flow in your home if it is any smaller.

There is even some that will swell when exposed to heat and almost seal your home from flying embers.

Be sure to clean up all waste, vegetation and debris especially evergreen needles as these are heavy in resin and will burn very hot and for a long time, with the heat this summer there was a lot of trees that dropped large amounts of their needles. The leaves and needles on your roof and in your gutters too should be cleaned out well and checked again during the hotter months starting in June.

Trees and vegetation should be removed from around the house and all bark mulch should be removed as well, although attractive it can be an issue in a fire, if you can switch to rock mulch and only have small plants that do not reach up to the siding on your home and well spaced so fire can not devour

these plants and lead directly to your home. Perhaps nice pots with plants can be placed along a fire proof band that surrounds your house. Trees should although safer that bushes should be no closer that 6 feet from buildings and should have no limbs that are below the 6 foot mark as well. Plants that should not be near your home include Cedar, Juniper, Yew, Tall Grasses and Spruce. Any plant with aromatic leaves or needles have a heavy resin in them will burn hot and ferociously when ignited.

Fences can be a big fuel source as well so if you are replacing an old wooden fence consider metal fencing instead. If wood is being used there are fire resistant woods available and use thicker planks as the are more resistant to fire, be sure to keep grasses down under and along your fence and the supporting posts.

Chain link can be very attractive with Ivy growing on it that will provide the privacy wanted. There are many other small things and some big that can help protect your home and some of these will be mentioned in the time frame that they become an issue.

Much is being done and researched as to how best to protect our homes and communities from the ravages of fire and more will be being done to help everyone to become fire smart and this will hopefully be of great value as this heat trend and wildfire destruction will continue as our planet experiences the effects of global warming.

Flu Shot Even More Important During COVID-19 Pandemic

As flu season kicks off, health experts are once again warning of a “twindemic." But last year, influenza cases hit historical lows. So how important is it to get a flu shot during the pandemic?

Flu season is notoriously unpredictable. Last year’s season was mild during the pandemic, which was a relief because we had such high COVID case numbers.

But many of us in the health field are now expecting flu case numbers to go up this year. And here’s why: There are a lot more kids back in the classrooms this school year and many more families are gathering for holidays and events. Also, more businesses have reopened. More and more folks are traveling nationally and internationally. Lastly, with less exposure to the flu last year, there is more concern that many Canadians could have weaker natural immune defenses.

Now is the best time to get a flu shot. Most people who are older than six months can get the flu vaccine.

It takes about two weeks for antibodies to develop.

To help reduce the risk, the Shift into Winter campaign reminds drivers to be prepared and plan ahead.

“Winter is Mother Nature’s ultimate road test,” says Louise Yako, spokesperson for the 13th annual campaign. “Winter conditions can change quickly around the Valley and the rest of the North Okanagan and push your driving skills to the limit.”

Winter roads can be dangerous due to rain, snow,

ice, and fog. “Even the most experienced drivers are challenged by cold temperatures, slippery roads, and reduced visibility,” Yako says. “We want drivers to shift into winter by preparing for winter driving before winter weather hits. The time to do that is now.”

In B.C., the average number of casualty crashes due to driving too fast for the conditions more than doubles from fall to early winter – to about 220 in December from about 99 in September, according to statistics on crashes reported to police from 2015 to 2019.

If possible, postpone your plans and avoid driving when road and weather conditions are poor.

• Slow down to meet the road conditions. Keep at least four seconds between you and the vehicle in front. “Give yourself plenty of room in situations where you may need to brake suddenly,” she says.

• Prepare yourself by knowing how to drive for the conditions before you get behind the wheel. “You can’t predict how your vehicle, or another driver’s vehicle, will react in snow or on ice,” Yako says.

Learn how to brake safely, get out of a skid, and become familiar with how your vehicle handles in winter weather. Think of it as building muscle memory: Your winter driving skills are rusty at the beginning of the season but you can commit them to memory by practicing them repeatedly as soon as wintry weather arrives.

OBITUARIES LEVINA

Voth

Levina Voth passed away on Sept 30th, 2021 at 6:30 AM at her home with her husband Cliff and daughter Vanessa by her side. She fought a battle with cancer 12 years prior to this and was able to conquer that fight however a stronger strain, more aggressive returned together with leukemia and all attempts to contain it were unsuccessful. It was a 5 month battle which she endured with patience, faith and hope. She was frustrated but always said God was in control and His will be done!

Levina was born in Calgary Alberta on April 5, 1966 to Cory and Ineka (Clazina) Verway.

She was one of four children which include Len in Salmon Arm and his wife Shannon, Dave in Grande Prairie and Jon and Nancy from Yakima Washington. Levina accepted the Lord as her personal Saviour and was baptized at Emmanuel Baptist Church on Jan 29, 1984. She married James Major from Lumby on May 16, 1987 and was blessed with 3 children, Kevin, Janelle, and Vanessa. The marriage lasted 24 years and then a divorce ended the union. After a number of years being single and working hard at Vernon Jubilee Hospital, first as a TV rental rep and then as a house keeper she met Clifford Voth, a dairy farmer, and after an 11 month courtship were married on June 23, 2018 in Lavington at the Lavington Fellowship Church where they remain as members.

They had a wonderful marriage and their union included 5 more children from Cliff ’s previous marriage, Lisa, Jeremy, Adam, Cecilia and Victoria. Levina loved being a Grandma and Nanna to Keira and Seth and to Stephanie, Samantha, Sophie, Jacob and Andrew. She will be missed terribly by all who knew her, both friends and family which includes many nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles.

Ed was called Home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday, October 9th, 2021 at the age of 75 years.

Ed was born to Edward and Ruth Watson on November 28th, 1945 in Calgary, Alberta. As a child, he was easy going and adventurous, growing up fast and joined the work force at the age of 17. Ed met his wife Jo-Anne in 1967 at Bowden, Alberta. He had two young daughters, Shari and Shelley, when they met. They married in 1969 and went on to have nine children together, Cindy Knight (Randal), Sandi Austin (Steve), Tom Watson (Keri), Priscilla Arnold (Dan), Sara Watson, Tammy Watson (Joey), John Watson, Jesse Watson (Jessica), Joseph Watson (Amber) and raised their grandson Adam Watson (Gabby), from birth.

Ed had a wandering spirit and was always seeking adventure and a better future. Taking his wife and children along on the journey, they lived in many places across British Columbia and Alberta and even ventured to Nova Scotia for a time. Eventually his love of the mountains and heat from the Okanagan sun drew him back to his final home in Lumby, B.C. In addition to being a dedicated father and husband, Ed loved the outdoors, fishing, cross country skiing, biking, snowshoeing and camping, playing the guitar and reading his Bible. Ed also loved driving logging truck and although he would take a break from time to time to explore other job opportunities, he always seemed to return to driving those big rigs that brought him so much joy. Throughout most of his entire adult life, he held an unwavering faith in God, which he shared with anyone and everyone he ever had a conversation with.

Ed has now joined his mother and father, Ed and Ruth Watson, and his two eldest daughters, Shari Robertson (Brian) and Shelley Watson in Heaven. He is survived by his brother Glen Watson (Prudencia (Yuklan)); his sister Heather Watson; wife Jo-Anne and their children, along with a long list of treasured grandchildren and greatgrandchildren, nieces and nephews.

A Confusion Of Colours

by Donna Easto Last week we looked at an old method of determining your “True Colour” according to a worksheet.

The worksheet had been used by employers to aid in finding the perfect employees for their business. Since then, I’ve found several articles, research papers, and studies that address the same issue from many angles, from how colour affects mood, productivity and focus to managing employees based on their “true colour.”

I recall a friend grumbling that he’d been judged unsuitable for a particular posting in the high Arctic because he was an “adventurous orange” paleontologist and not a “responsible gold” one! In this article, we take a look at one approach to choosing and managing employees by their colour temperament.

“Curious greens” are notoriously independent, focusing on the future and less on the present and past.

Do not try to micromanage your green employee but stand your ground and present your views to them in a no-nonsense way. These stubborn strategic thinkers are the happiest founding or working at startups in a

managerial or marketing role. Famous greens include Steve Jobs.

“Adventurous oranges” are impulsive and tend to quick decision making. A true orange will thrive in a constantly changing environment. Like their curious green cousins, oranges don’t respond well to micromanagement. Tell them what needs to be done and avoid telling them how to do their job. Labelled “squirrely” by one of the articles, oranges respond well to humour. It’s not all negative with the “adventurous orange” employee. In fact, they are considered the most adaptable of all the four temperaments, loving deadlines and blossoming when multitasking. Personable and charming, oranges may be happiest working in high-pressure or crisis environments where they shine at taking control and staying calm. Famous oranges include Sir Richard Branson.

“Responsible golds” need structure and clear guidelines. They take direction well but may find it hard to adapt to change. Routine is most important to your gold employee, and any disruption may upset them.

Lumby Food Bank

As an employer, you’ll need to present arguments in a logical, easy-to-follow format. If you’re looking for a workaholic, they’re your best bet. Golds are very social and likable, making them good team players, organizers and priority setters. The best fit for these folks may be in human resource, managerial, development and engineering roles. Famous golds include Marissa Mayer.

“Harmonious blues” are in touch with who they are and look for the meaning in everything. A natural communicator, some blues may be overly sensitive and not take criticism well. As an employer, if you find yourself in conflict with a blue, give them specific, personal stories for context when getting across a point. Above all, listening to these employees’ concerns is critical, as it is for people of all temperaments.

Harmonious blues are natural communicators and skilled storytellers who may enjoy work in media, PR or marketing. Famous blues include Oprah.

Amendments Strengthen Access To Information, Protect People’s Privacy British Columbia is taking important steps to strengthen B.C.’s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIPPA) to deliver better, more inclusive services to people, businesses and public-sector organizations.

“The COVID-19 pandemic changed the way we live, work, connect with loved ones and access the services we need. Today, people can safely talk to their doctor via Zoom, learn online and do business faster,” said Lisa Beare, Minister of Citizens’ Services. “These amendments help people continue to access the services they need faster, while ensuring their privacy is protected. We’re making changes today to keep pace with advancements in technology and provide the level of service that people expect in the digital era.”

With input from thousands of people, businesses, Indigenous communities and public bodies, proposed changes to FOIPPA will help B.C. keep pace with new technology, strengthen privacy protections and improve services for thousands of people who request information each year.

Highlights of the proposed amendments include: • updating FOIPPA’s data-residency provisions so public bodies can use modern tools while continuing to protect personal information; • enhancing public-sector privacy protections and increasing accountability by implementing mandatory privacy-breach reporting; • introducing a modest application fee for non-personal freedom of information (FOI) requests; and • demonstrating the Province’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, reconciliation and equity by increasing information sharing with Indigenous Peoples, adding Indigenous cultural protections and removing non-inclusive language.

Data-residency requirement changes will bring B.C. in line with other jurisdictions by removing restrictions that prevent access to digital tools and technologies. These changes will increase access to technologies and streamline service delivery for public bodies. For example, greater access to cloud-based services will improve B.C.’s post-secondary institutions’ ability to attract students by allowing them to use cloud-based education tools offered outside of B.C. “This is a positive development from government that B.C.’s tech industry welcomes,” said Jill Tipping, president and CEO, BC Tech Association. “The changes to B.C.’s data residency requirements will allow local companies to leverage cutting-edge technology to help B.C.’s public sector deliver the modern tools that citizens expect with the privacy protections they need.”

“UBC welcomes these proposed amendments. They will substantially increase the privacy and security of personal data with more robust and resilient services

by allowing us to select the most secure and effective solutions,” said Jennifer Burns, associate vice-president, information technology and chief information officer, University of British Columbia. “We appreciate the opportunity to collaborate with government on changes that will boost the competitiveness and efficiency of B.C. post-secondary institutions while helping protect our students, faculty and staff.”

B.C. is strengthening privacy protection through added privacy-protection controls to safeguard people’s information, while remaining transparent and accountable. Enhancements to mandatory breach reporting require privacy management programs and clarify requirements for public bodies’ privacy impact assessments, while proposed amendments will increase penalties for offences under the act and introduce new penalties, such as for knowingly accessing information without authorization.

“As an organization that values innovation in order to maintain the highest level of care to patients, Vancouver Coastal Health welcomes improvements made to the data residency requirements within the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act,” said Steven Tam, general counsel and chief privacy officer, Vancouver Coastal Health. “These changes not only provide more flexibility and opportunity to implement the best available technologies to improve health-care services, but they also enable us to access the most robust technology solutions to secure sensitive health-care data and protect patient privacy.”

Proposed amendments also reflect the Province’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, reconciliation and equity by increasing information sharing with Indigenous Peoples, adding cultural protections and removing non-inclusive language, which aligns with B.C.’s Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act. The act has also been reviewed through a critical, gender-based analysis plus (GBA+) lens to make the act more inclusive and equitable.

Quick Facts: • Introduced in 1993, FOIPPA applies to more than 2,900 public bodies in B.C. and keeps government accountable to the public and protects the privacy of British Columbians.

• Apart from minor amendments in 2019, FOIPPA has not substantially changed since 2011.

• The Province processes more than 10,000 FOI requests annually, with the volume of requests increasing by more than 40% over a two-year period, reaching an all-time high of more than 13,000 requests in 2019-20 (13,055).

• The average cost to government for processing a single FOI request is $3,000, though some large, complex requests can exceed this. Fees to produce

records are collected in fewer than 2% of FOI requests.

• Approximately, 40% of requests are for personal records, which people are not charged for. The proposed amendments will not change this.

OBITUARIES Ray Folland 1954 - 2021 It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Ray Folland on Sept. 27, 2021 at Vernon Hospice House after a battle with cancer.

Raymond William Folland was born Oct. 20, 1954 to Ella and Raymond Folland in Beardmore Ontario. He is survived by his wife Trish Folland and daughter Sarah Folland of Lumby, son Donovan Nakazawa, daughter Amber van Kleef, daughter Trinity Wolfe and their families. He is also survived by siblings Ralph Folland, Elva Stewart, Ella Folland, and Rosemary Amiro.

Ray had a zest for life and had many hobbies including volunteer fire fighting, scuba diving, Shuswap Quarter Miles Car Club, and he even tried his hand at amateur acting where he was Prince Charming in Shuswap Theatre’s production of Sleeping Beauty. Over later years his hobbies have included skiing, hunting, fishing and building a cedar strip canoe.

His working life included 30 years as a baker, as well as five years as a house framer, and 12 years as a heavy equipment operator in the oil fields.

Due to COVID a small private ceremony is being held and then his ashes will be laid to rest with his mother at Hillside Cemetery in Kamloops.
