700% School Bus Fee Increase - School District 22

There have been new changes to the fee's for eligible riders on school buses in the Vernon School district 22.This covers the communities of Vernon, Coldstream, Lavington, Lumby, and Cherryville, most of which consists of rural households. 2 years ago fee's were instated for ridership of $25.00, on February 17, 2021, a new fee schedule was approved raising the fee of $25 to $200 for eligible riders. This is a 700% increase from the 2020/21 school year to the 2021/22 school year.

New Years Resolutions - Exercise Part 2

Last week we talked about the benefits of doing endurance training, or what people refer to as Cardio.

Cardiovascular exercise is very important for our circulatory system and although it improves our cardiovascular fitness, it does not prevent the loss of muscle tissue. Only strength training maintains our muscle mass and strength throughout our mid-life years. After the age of 20 up to 1/2 pound of muscle tissue is lost per year in both males and females owing to the normal ageing process.

This week is about the importance of resistance/ strength training and its benefits, along with the long-lasting calorie burn we get from it. Because muscle is very active tissue, muscle loss is accompanied by a reduction in our resting metabolism (calorie burn).

Research indicates that an average adult experiences a 5% reduction in metabolic rate every decade of life.

Only resistance/strength training can help to avoid this.

Community Volunteer Income Tax Program

The best way to teach your grandchildren about taxes is to eat 30% of their ice cream.

Seniors, it is income tax time of year again when we gather up our paperwork and try to sift through seas of swimming numbers, hopefully, with an accountant to assist in negotiating the waters. If you are looking for a life preserver to help with your yearly income tax submission, there is assistance available here in the community.

Marilyn and Beth are once again hosting the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program that will run from March 2 all the way through until the end of April 2021. These ladies have been offering their time and tax expertise for many years here in Lumby. This is a free service available to anyone with a low to mod-

erate income.

One of these knowledgeable ladies will be at the Old Age Pensioners Hall beginning on March 2nd, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2pm – 4pm. Please note that these days are by appointment only. Appointments can be made by calling Whitevalley Community Resource Centre at 250-547-8866.

On Wednesdays and Fridays, this service is available from 9 am – 11 am again at the Old Age Pensioners Hall located at 1765 Glencaird Street. This two days will be on ‘first come, first serve’ so no appointment is required on Wednesdays and Fridays.

Last week someone called me up. They had trapped a Rat on their property. When he took it out of the trap, it was frozen and still had a piece of cheese in it's mouth.

Did you know there are about 50-60 different species of Rats! The first species were found in Asia and Australia. Over time these rodents have travelled all over the world, they are now in every country. In the USA the city with the most amount of Rats is Chicago, Los Angeles is 2nd, and New York comes in third.

You shoot photos, don’t you?

Digital cameras and I Phones have opened up the whole world to amateur as well as professional photographers. Such a beautiful and magical world! The Monashee Arts Council is sponsoring a photo competition and show for the month of April 2021. Anyone from Lumby, Cherryville, Lavington and Whitevale can enter. There are three age categories: 6 to 14 years, 15-24 years, and adult.

Entries will be juried by local photographers Bruce Borrowman, Dale Eurich, and Mikayla Appleby. As well as prizes for each category, there will be a prize for People’s Choice determined by visitors to the Village Gallery which is hosting the show.

Thanks to the sponsorship of the Monashee Arts Council and the Regional District of the North Okanagan the Village Gallery has been able to continue its tradition of solo and group shows that feature community artists and crafters. As well, thanks to support from the Arts Council of BC, MAC has been given resources to sustain community education and mentorship. During the show in April, local photographer Colleen Fielding will be available to discuss how she makes commercial products using her original photography. The jurors will be able to critique the entries if requested.

Applications for entry will be available starting Monday, March 1, 2021 with a deadline of Saturday, March 27 at 3:00 pm. Each entrant is allowed up to 3 photos with a $2 fee for each entry. The requisite size is 8” x 10”; borderless prints are preferred.

For display purposes, photographs must be backed by foam board or cardboard. Self-adhesive backings can be purchased for $4 each at the Village Gallery (1975 Vernon St Lumby – Monday through Saturday, 10 am to 3 pm).

Herbal Topicals And Teas For Skin Health Donna Easto, H.C., C.H., M.H., Certified Herbal Educator Yogurt Honey Mask. Mix 6 tablespoons of full-fat yogurt and six tablespoons of raw organic or Manuka honey. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator. To use: Take two tablespoons of the mixture and let it warm up for about 20 minutes while you’re gently washing your face. Then apply the yogurt honey mask with fingers or a clean cotton pad. Leave on for 10 minutes. Rinse and apply moisturizer. Do this 2 to 5 times a week. By applying a mix of a probiotic (yogurt) with an antibacterial (honey), you’ll be improving your skin microbiome and killing bacteria while moisturizing your skin. Some women find a cinnamon (1 tsp) to honey(2 tbsps) mix works for them. Cinnamon also has antibacterial properties.

Steeped green tea leaves mixed with honey also make an effective mask for acne-prone areas of your face.

While you’re enjoying a healing mask, try sipping a cup of liver-friendly Dandelion root tea. Dande-

lion root stimulates digestion and helps the liver rid your body of toxins and excess hormones. Take two teaspoons of the dried, chopped root, cover with 8 ounces of just boiling water and steep covered for 15 minutes. Dosage: 3-4 cups a day.

Many teas help support skin health, including green tea, Matcha, Spearmint, Lavender, Rooibos and Hibiscus. If you use organic teabags (and tea), a quick way to treat a breakout is to place the cooled bag directly on the lesion for a couple of minutes. The tea’s antioxidants will infuse directly into your skin, helping to hydrate and calm inflammation. Teabags are also an easy way to make a wash. Simply brew two cups - the first to drink fresh, the second a more potent infusion* to apply to your skin after cooling.

Antibacterial and anti-inflammatory Calendula flower wash is another good choice for skin health.

Infuse* one teaspoon of dried organic flowers in 8 ounces of hot (not boiling) water for 10 minutes.

Strain, cool and apply to the face with a clean cotton

pad. You can also make a wash from anti-inflammatory Chamomile flowers. Steep one tablespoon of the dried flowers in 8 ounces of hot water for 10 minutes.

Strain and apply as for Calendula.

Rosewater spritz. Not only does it smell heavenly it’s also a skincare natural with anti-inflammatory, astringent and antioxidant actions. If you’re using fresh petals, be sure to rinse them well. This time of year, dried is the usual option. Use ¼ cup dried petals to replace ½ cup fresh. Place the petals in a non-reactive pan and cover with distilled water sufficient just to immerse. Bring to a slow simmer uncovered, reduce heat to its lowest, cover the pan and let sit until the petals have lost their colour. Remove from the heat and cool leaving the lid on. Once cooled, strain through double cheesecloth and pour into a spray bottle. It’ll keep in the fridge for about a month. Close your eyes and spritz onto your face as often as you like. Add those spent petals to your compost.

The deadline for filing is Friday, April 30, 2021. After that date, there are late filing charges assessed and if there are monies owing, interest charges may be applied. If you do not file your return, the GST and Child Tax Benefits (if applicable) may be interrupted/discontinued as well as other benefits you may have.

Riblets We’re lucky to have a great meat department at Freshmart here in Lumby. For this week’s Watkins recipe, you’ll need 5 pounds of pork loin back ribs.

Preheat oven to 350F/180C

Ingredients: Riblets: • 5 lbs/2.27 kg pork loin back ribs • 2 cups/500 mL water • ½ cup/125 mL apple cider vinegar • ⅓ cup/80 mL barbeque sauce • 1 ½ tsp/7.5 mL organic garlic powder • 1 ½ tsp/7.5L organic seasoning salt Root Beer Barbeque Sauce: • ⅔ cup/160 mL barbeque sauce • 2 tsp/10 mL Root Beer Extract

• ½ tsp/2.5 mL ginger extract • ¼ tsp/1.2 mL allspice • Pure ground black pepper • Organic Mediterranean Sea Salt • Optional: a dash of Maple Bacon Flavour Directions: Place ribs in a large, shallow roasting pan, bone side down. Combine water, vinegar and barbeque sauce. Pour over ribs. Sprinkle with garlic and seasoning salt.

Cover and bake for 1 to 1.5 hours or until ribs are tender. Let cool. Place ribs on grill over indirect heat or bake at 400F/200C for 20 to 30 minutes or until warm and tender. Brush the riblets with Root Beer Barbeque Sauce. Optional: sprinkle with sea salt and black pepper, or add Maple Bacon Flavour to the barbeque sauce.

Vernon & North Okanagan Immigration Pilot reaches First Anniversary The Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot (RNIP) for the Vernon-North Okanagan is now one-year old and the pilot is attracting growing interest from local employers as they learn about its benefits in hiring skilled labour.

Leigha Horsfield, Executive Director Community Futures North Okanagan, which coordinates the pilot through a contract with the federal government says, “This program was initiated as a workforce development opportunity to support our local employers in attracting skilled workers. With over 18,000 potential candidates in our database, posted jobs draw qualified applicants. Employers have been successful in attracting legal, accounting, health, and animal welfare professionals as well as managers, construction workers, and other occupations.”

To date, 29 principal applications have been recommended for permanent residency to the federal government. Some of the individuals had already been working and living in the community and were able to utilize this new pathway to immigration. Others applied from out of country and two of those have now arrived in the community. Altogether with their spouses and children, this pilot has resulted in 60 individuals who will be living and working in the North Okanagan.

Ms. Horsfield says, “We’re happy with the

results to date especially given the uncertainly in the economy with COVID shutting things down just one month into the pilot. There are still many vacancies for skilled labour positions within our region and we will continue to offer coordination and support services through the RNIP pilot.”

The pilot is supported by Vernon and District Immigrant and Community Services, the Local Immigration Partnership, the Chambers of Commerce, Okanagan College, the City of Vernon, the Regional District, Southern Interior Development Trust and Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada with additional support and funding provided by the Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction and the Government of Canada.

The 3-year pilot began accepting applications in February 2020. One of 11 pilots across Canada, the Vernon – North Okanagan Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot supports employment in the North Okanagan and Coldstream districts and municipalities of Vernon, Lake Country, Armstrong, Spallumcheen, Lumby and Enderby.
