The Heartbeat of Lumby with Guilt Free Shopping The volunteers and board members of the Lumby Thrift Store want to continue to thank everyone who has been kindly donating at the times and location as requested. The building on Vernon Street that we have been leasing as a donation and sorting location has been an ideal space to make sure that items sit for a time before handling. However convenient this has been, the building has sold. Please make note of upcoming changes: Donations will be accepted there for a limited time still, on Tuesday and Thursday 11-2, and Saturday 12-1. The LAST DAY for dropping off there will be Saturday February 20. NO DONATIONS will be accepted the week of Feb 21 to Mar 1. (We ask that you do not leave anything in the Thrift Store entry hallway). As of March 2, please bring your items to the container in the Thrift Store parking lot. Pre Plant Considerations As usual I need to start with a bit of a rant. For the last couple of months the news has often brought up the name QAnon and as I have not heard of this I decided to watch a show that gave a fairly intensive history and explanation of what it is and what its about. The people who follow this cult are crazy. How can people fall for such idiocy is beyond me but its happened before and it is happening again. Think shades of Jim Jones and his followers in Guyana, The Children of God and The Manson Family. How people can be deluded to believe such crap always astounds me and this QAnon too will end with death and destruction. The problem these days is the mass use of social media or should I say miss use of social media. I hope everyone is safe and well! Don’t let up on the protocols that have kept us safe now is not the time to let our guards down. I hope everyone enjoyed our last snowfall, 2 centimetres, ya right. The weather looks good into the middle of February. Our luck is holding out! Many plants are now germinating except the Primula which was just a lark and considering the age of the seeds and the fact they won’t germinate in temperatures over 65 degrees while everything else needs 75
degrees I am not too dismayed. Most other plantings are doing well and I am planting a few other seeds (Geranium) now. Its still a little too early for the vegetable seeds. I have been informed of the cancellation of a highly regarded and enjoyed seed sale and swap that would have been happening soon. If you grow your own bedding plants it is time to order as you don’t want to miss out on your favourites. I order my seeds from several Canadian providers and you can order catalogues from companies like William Dam, Stokes and Vessies. The prices vary quite widely so do shop around. For some really unusual seed offerings you can also check out Richters. If you have some flower seeds like Petunias, Geranium and most perennial flowers you should start them now. Make sure you water the seed tray well and ensure it is up to 75 degrees before you start. Some seeds need light to germinate and will do poorly if germination occurs at all when covered. Mist the soil with warm water until they germinate. Do not let the soil dry out as the germinating seeds are very sensitive. Use clean containers and be sure to label the trays well with the date included. Use potting soil only as it has
the right balance of ingredients that is important for germination. Fertilizer will not be needed for some time and can hamper seed germination. I will be writing more on seed planting times and the care of young seedlings as the proper dates approach. Happy Gardening! New Years Resolution – Weight loss 1O1 - FAT There are so many views on fats out there, from eating lots of fat to eating no fat. But here is the skinny on fat. Good fats as in Monosaturated fatty acids or MUFA’s or Polyunsaturated fatty acids as PUFA’s, should be majority of your fat intake, whereas Saturated fats should be limited to about 10% and Trans fats avoided. Here are how fats work. MUFA’s are omega 9 Fatty acids and have a number of health benefits: Aids in weight loss, reduces the risk of heart disease, decrease inflammation, reduces “bad” LDL cholesterol and also increases “good” HDL cholesterol. Oleic acid a type of MUFA shows much encouragement in many benefits from lowering breast cancer risks to cardiovascular inflammation. An encouraging study in regards to breast cancer, consisted of 642 women. The women with the highest amounts of oleic acid in their fat tissue had the lowest rates of breast cancer. Foods high in MUFA’s are avocados, olive & canola oils, a variety of nuts, dark chocolate

(72% or higher) …. PUFA’s are omega 3 & 6 Fatty acids. The 3 main omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). ALA is found mainly in plant oils such as flaxseed, soybean, and canola oils. DHA and EPA are found in fish and other seafood ALA is an essential fatty acid, meaning that your body can’t make it, so you must get it from the foods and beverages you consume. Observational studies have shown that each gram of ALA you eat per day lowers your risk of dying from heart disease by 10%. Several studies have also found that ALA can improve insulin resistance. DHA shows lower risk of cognitive decline, Alzheimer’s disease, cardiovascular disease, depression, schizophrenia, psychosis, and other behavioral disorders. DHA also plays a crucial role in fetal and childhood brain development (affecting visual acuity, intelligence, problem solving) Foods high in PUFA’s are flax seeds, a variety of fish, walnuts, and vegetable oils as corn, soy, safflower…. Saturated fat is needed, but only limitedly, as it does make up 50% of our cell membranes, helps with immune system, helps guard liver from toxins and even has antimicrobial properties. But it can be linked to weight gain and high cholesterol. Eating foods that have too much saturated fat, and too little unsaturated fat, changes the way the liver handles cholesterol. Cholesterol is made and broken down in the liver. Our liver cells have LDL receptors on them. When LDL cholesterol passes by in the blood, the receptor takes the cholesterol out of the blood and into the liv-
er to be broken down. So, we need LDL receptors to keep our cholesterol levels under control. But eating too much saturated fat stops the receptors from working optimally, so cholesterol builds up in the blood. To break it down even more think of it as LDL as the dump truck that carries and dumps most of the cholesterol that is delivered to cells - too much collects and bounds together HDL is the sweeper/recycling truck, that reduces, reuses and recycles LDL to liver where it can be processed. Sweeper, sweeps excess cholesterol away – if too much is bound stuck together can’t sweep away. This is the collection of plaque in our arteries. Foods high in saturated fats are, fatty meats, butter, lard, coconuts oil… Note many pastries or packaged goods contain saturated fat and often contain trans fats as well. Ladies – Look What is Rolling into Town! Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in women, no matter a person’s race or ethnicity. It can sometimes take up to three years for any breast abnormalities to be felt so mammograms are absolutely the best tests that physicians have to find breast issues. The first piloted mobile mammography service began in British Columbia over thirty years ago, in 1990. Nowadays, this essential travelling service visits more than 170 rural communities across our province. Since its inception, the mobile units have converted from film to digital. This conversion allows for greater efficiency in sharing images and being able to do this in a timely fashion. Technologists are now able to see images right away; which instantly ensures image quality. Mammograms are recommended for women aged 40 – 74 and there is no referral required if you are over 40. Women can make an informed decision to screen by visiting www.screeningbc.ca/breast or by speaking to your health care provider. In conjunction with the Lumby & District Health Services Society, BC Breast Cancer Screening will be bringing their state of the art, mobile mammography unit to Lumby and will be parking in the Sheardown’s parking lot from February 4th – 10th. It’s a great way to keep active during the colder months, but this time of year comes with some extra hazards. Due to the natural freeze-thaw cycles of the adjacent rock faces, rocks can become loose and fall from significant heights. Please use caution and be aware of falling rocks. Choose sections of the trail that are not next to rock faces while we experience cycles of below and above freezing. Do not stop in sections with rockfall warning signage.

This is a column meant for fun and some information About myself: I am a Freelance Photographer you often see me on the side of the road or in various places taking photos of different things animals, birds, places, people etc. l have lived in Lumby just over 8 years,you have seen my photos in the newspaper (Lumby Valley Times) and once in awhile in the Vernon Morning Star, and the Lumby Art Gallery. Photography is my passion. Disclaimer: The information on some of my photos that I write about a lot of times come from the Internet or books I research them, hopefully the facts are as close to the truth as I can come.
Don't Be Fooled! In this day and age almost everyone has a cell phone. For a lot of people this is the only phone they have using it for almost everything, like they would use their computer, including their banking. I still have a house phone, plus a cell phone. Where I live does not always have cell service so I have both. I rarely give out my cell phone number, except to certain people. I don't list it on papers when being asked for my phone number. Cell phones are not cheap, some may only cost a couple of hundred dollars, while others can cost thousands. Sure some of them have great cameras, although I still prefer my hand held cameras, With most of the cell phones out there they have one thing in common, they TEXT. Sure texting is a good way to get hold of someone, (I still prefer to talk on the phone or if I can see someone in person) but texting has also opened up a new way of trying to scam people. Scamming people has always been around, usually it concerns someone you don't know trying to take your money somehow.
Last year around tax time, I got a text supposedly from the Government of Canada, the text said that they found a mistake in my taxes and that they owe me more money. I deleted this and put a block on the number. About a week later Tim had got the same text only it was from a different number, the funny thing is, Tim had not done his taxes yet at this time. As far as I know they do not have our cell phone numbers. DON'T BE FOOLED, The Government of Canada will never send you a text. A few months ago I got a text from NETFLEX this text was telling me that my payment had not gone through and if I didn't pay it to some weird number my NETFLIX would be cut off. Was I scared of this? Not at all, when this text came in I was watching NETFLIX, and I still get the channel. DON'T BE FOOLED, NETFLIX will never send you a text to tell you about a payment not going through. Two weeks ago I got a text from who knows where, telling me they owed me some money from a company I never heard of giving me some www.32auctions.com/cbsspac2021 http address and they needed me to respond so they could put it in my account. But they all try to fool you, using a different number all the time, they are even local numbers starting with 250-540...….. I also get a few calls about how my name was picked from some airline (by the way I haven't flown anywhere for over 3 years now) and that I won a free trip, ya right! So just for the heck of it, one day I answered this call by pushing # 1,(press # 2 if you don't want these calls again, which of course I still get even though I pressed # 2 , or hung up, or blocked their number.) even though I knew it was a scam I thought I would try it, as this call had come on my house phone. Well here is how it went, first they wanted my credit card number so that they could take a payment of $900.00 to hold my spot (wait a minute, I thought this was a free trip?) When I questioned them about this, their response was that it was just to insure that my spot was reserved as they were giving away a few "FREE TRIPS" hahaha (wow) I still had not given them my credit card number. I was then informed that on top of the $900.00 I would have to pay some taxes, I then would have to pay an insurance amount of an extra $200.00, in my head I am wondering where the "FREE TRIP " is. Women's Health And Botanical Medicine: Puberty
Donna Easto, C.H., H.C. M.H., Certified Herbal Consultant In the last article, we discussed women pioneers in the field of herbalism. With this essay, we start a series based on women's health, beginning at puberty. Puberty's the time when a series of physical, endocrine, and reproductive changes begin to transform most girls from childhood into adolescence and womanhood. Puberty often begins earlier than parents expect. Many factors influence the timeline on the progress of puberty, but generally, it starts between the ages of 8 and 13. After a girl's 8th birthday, an area of the brain called the hypothalamus starts to release gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). When GnRH travels to the pituitary gland (a small gland under the brain that produces hormones that control other glands throughout the body), it releases two more puberty hormones — luteinizing hormone (L.H.) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). Puberty is divided into four distinct stages: 1) most girls start their development between the ages of 8 and 13 (the average age is 12) and have a growth spurt between the ages of 10 and 14. 2) the beginning of breast development; 3) development of body hair,
primarily due to an increase in androgens (male hormones); 4) the final stage of puberty, menarche, the onset of menstruation. By around 17 years, 50% of girls will have achieved full adult height. Many will grow another 1-2 inches after getting their period. Bone density increases and the body's overall fat will increase from 15.7 to 26.7%. Full development is almost always achieved by 21. Q. What is an early sign of puberty? A. The development of breast "buds," small bumps under the nipple between ages 8 and 13. It's not unusual for breast development to be one-sided initially and to be a little tender. Q. When should I begin to talk with my daughter about periods? A. On average, menstruation begins within 2 - 2 ½ years after the development of breast "buds." Talking about puberty isn't a one-time conversation. If you haven't already done so, the "buds" ' appearance is a great time to begin an honest and open discussion about the changes she can expect over the next years. It's an amazing and special time in a girl's life. Indeed, nothing to be embarrassed about.

Q. Are there any "red flags" I should be aware of? A. Signs of puberty before eight years of age or very long after; body changes that progress too fast, and body changes occurring out of the usual order are all worth mentioning to your family health care provider. There are simple tests to determine if hormonal or glandular issues are a possible cause. Next week: common problems of puberty in adolescent females, botanical treatments.

Hello, today I’m starting a recipe column! These recipes are taken from the archives and more recent offerings by Watkins. To begin, I’d like to share a few recipes from a cookbook published during the Great Depression of 19291939. Understandably, ingredients were basic, here are three from 1935.
Mix well together and make a long loaf in a pan of suitable shape. Place small, thin slices of bacon on top; add a little pepper and onion seasoning. Bake in a moderate oven for about an hour or long enough for it to be well roasted.
Hamburger Loaf • 1.5 lbs, chopped meat (3/4 of beef and ¼ of pork) • 1 teaspoon salt • 1 teaspoon Onion Seasoning or juice • 1 good pinch of Black Pepper • ¾ of a finely minced green pepper • 1 beaten egg • ½ cup bread crumbs or cooked rice or macaroni • 1 tablespoon melted butter in ½ cup tomato soup
Bread Pudding • 1 quart bread crumbs • 3 cups milk • ½ cup sugar • ¾ cup butter • 3 eggs • 1 teaspoon Vanilla • ½ teaspoon salt\ • 1 cup chopped lemon
Potato Nests With Onions • 1 pint small white onions • 1/8 teaspoon Black Pepper • 1 tablespoon butter • 1 tablespoon chopped parsley • 6 potatoes • 1/3 teaspoon salt • ¼ cup hot milk Peel the onions and cook in salted water for an hour. Boil and mash potatoes, add salt and pepper, butter and hot milk and beat. Mold into nest-shape with a spoon. Fill with onions and sprinkle with parsley.
Heat the milk and pour it on the bread crumbs. Cream the butter and the sugar and add the eggs, salt and vanilla. When the milk is cold, combine the two mixtures and add the chopped lemon. Pour into a buttered mold and bake for 40 minutes. Serve with any sauce. Sufficient for 6 persons. Want to see your favourite recipe here? Watkins or not, I’d be pleased to feature it. The worst thing is, somehow, a couple of them knew her first name, in the text they started out with her name then gave some crap about her owing money or getting money.
Luckily she is smart enough not to GET FOOLED by these insane texts. Unfortunately there are still a great number of people getting fooled by these people either by texting, or phone calls etc. and worst of all, the majority of people that this happens to is Seniors, a lot of them have lost their life savings. If something puts a RED FLAG in your head, or it sounds to good to be true, listen to your RED Flag, listen to your gut feelings DON'T BE FOOLED by these SCAMMERS, CHEATERS, GRIFTERS, ETC. They just want something from you, don't give it to them Remember: DON'T BE FOOLED!
