On October 25th, 1962, the Lumby Hotel became the first dwelling to be connected to Lumby's sanitary sewer system.

Residences that followed the initial connection paid $3.00 per month for the service. In 1974, rates were increased to $4.00 per month, which generated an annual revenue of $17,300.00 to the Village of Lumby.

Fall Cleanup Continues!

Fall has definitely arrived and over the last week frost snuck into our yards and gardens and as the days grow steadily colder and wetter the final push to finish up in the yard is upon us. Slowly ripening tomatoes can be harvested green to finish the process in boxes, they will still taste better than any store bought tomatoes but be sure to keep a close eye on them as some still can turn into unpleasant surprises. I wash mine in a sink of water with a touch of bleach, this kills the bacteria on the exterior of the tomato and lowers the chance of them rotting in the box instead of ripening.

Some will not ripen as they are too immature so these can be fried with rosemary, delicious, or made into a relish. Also if the fruit gets too much frost it may cause them to rot instead of ripen so be sure to watch for frost warnings and cover them if you can't get them off the plant yet. Squash too can be washed off with water with a small amount of bleach this works so well that I still have good squash from last year in my cold room. The herbs are done as well as any planting and bulb lifting and seed collecting, many things still to be done out there and fortunately the weather does remain moderately warm over the next week with a fair amount of rain although I see a couple of very chilly

nights. The Farmers Almanac predicts a winter very much like last year temperature mostly moderate and most of the snow fall in the mountain areas. Be sure to water your larger bushes and trees deeply for their long winters rest. Be sure when you finish with your tools to clean them well with soap and water with a little bleach for good measure. All plants that you bring into the house should be examined well for pests that you do not want overwinter, perhaps a good spray down with a soapy water would not be unwise. You do not need an infestation on the rest of your house plants!

It is now time to get that garlic planted as there is still time for it to get established so it is ready to start its growth in spring.

The leaves on our trees will now turn yellow more rapidly, be sure to collect them to use as mulch as it will help preserve moisture, protect plants and bulbs from freeze thaw conditions, and suppress weeds, fertilize as well as it looks real neat and tidy. I find it hard to get everything I need to do in a day done, first you wait till its reasonably warm outside to start then a

short time later its too dark to work. LOL I should just be like a bear and hibernate for the winter.

Our last day of the Lumby and District Market was this last Saturday. It was a very cold start to the day but a touch of sunshine in the early afternoon made a huge difference. Many of our die hard clients made it out to get their fruit and vegetables and perhaps a treat for themselves or a gift for a friend from among our gifted vendors. Thank you all for your support this year and will look forward to when we meet again in spring. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone I hope it was enjoyable one amidst a few family and friends. Well, enough for now work is calling and so much to do!

Does Being Cold Give You A Weak Immune System?

Almost every mother has said it: "Wear a jacket or you'll catch a cold!" Is she right? Probably not, exposure to moderate cold temperatures doesn't increase your susceptibility to infection. There are two reasons why winter is "cold and flu season." In the winter, people spend more time indoors, in closer contact with other people who can pass on their germs. Also the influenza virus stays airborne longer when air is cold and less humid.

Researchers remain interested in this question in different populations. Some experiments with mice suggest that cold exposure might reduce the ability to cope with infection. But what about humans? Scientists have performed experiments in which volunteers were briefly dunked in cold water or spent short periods of time naked in subfreezing temperatures.

Scientists have studied people who lived in Antarctica and those on expeditions in the Canadian Rockies.

Researchers documented an increase in upper respiratory infections in competitive cross-country skiers who exercise vigorously in the cold, but whether these infections are due to the cold or other factors — such

as the intense exercise or the dryness of the air — is not known.

Canadian researchers that has reviewed hundreds of medical studies on the subject and conducted some of its own research concludes that there's no need to worry about moderate cold exposure — it has no detrimental effect on the human immune system. Should you bundle up when it's cold outside? The answer is "yes" if you're uncomfortable, or if you're going to be outdoors for an extended period where such problems as frostbite and hypothermia are a risk. But don't worry about immunity.

Following general good-health guidelines is the single best step you can take toward naturally keeping your immune system working properly. Every part of your body, including your immune system, functions better when protected from environmental assaults and bolstered by healthy-living strategies such as these: • Eat a diet high in fruits and vegetables.

• Exercise regularly.

• Maintain a healthy weight.

• If you drink alcohol, drink only in moderation.

• Get adequate sleep.

• Washing your hands frequently • Try to minimize stress.

• Keep current with all recommended vaccines.

Vaccines prime your immune system to fight off infections before they take hold in your body.

Did The Turkey Make You Tired?

Thanksgiving is done and by the time you are reading this, you have already recovered from your turkey coma – as it is sometimes jokingly referred to as.

So why does this happen? Many people blame it on tryptophan, an amino acid present in turkey. But the fact is, tryptophan is in many high protein foods as meat, chicken, fish and dairy. But you never really hear someone say they are so tired after a chicken dinner or after having a big breakfast with yogurt and granola. So why is this?

Let’s first look at tryptophan’s journey and its contribution to sleep. Tryptophan is a precursor to serotonin a neurotransmitter – a brain chemical that is the master of our moods! When serotonin levels are in check we are in a better mood, sleep better and we can even have a higher pain tolerance. Serotonin is used to make melatonin, a hormone that helps control wake/ sleep cycles. But for all of these to work, tryptophan needs to first get through the blood-brain barrier.

Since tryptophan is a bulky amino acid, it has a hard time getting through, because there is a fight amongst other amino acids, to also get through, that have a much easier time. Very little tryptophan can actually make it through, so it needs some help. Think of it as waiting in a long line at the grocery store, and you are at that spot when a new cashier opens up, and they pick you to go through first. Tryptophan in a sense, needs that same thing to happen – “a line opened up,” to have a chance to get through. This is done with the help of carbohydrates. Carbohydrates cause your body to release insulin, which removes all amino

acids—except tryptophan from your blood, leaving tryptophan without competition, to enter the brain easily and boosting serotonin levels. As you can see there is quite a process that happens for tryptophan to make it the sole contributor for our sleepiness.

There are some factors besides the turkey that need to be taken into account.

1. Turkey dinner is usually associated around other heavy dishes as mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, pie with whip cream and possibly alcohol. Many of these high carb foods surrounding the turkey, can cause a quick rise in blood sugar and in turn a crash not too long after, making you feel tired. If alcohol is involved, you feel even more tired from its sedating effect.

2. Circulation goes a bit awry, as your blood is needed in the stomach for digestion, from all these heavy foods. This causes less blood available to the brain – making you feel tired and lethargic.

3. Turkey dinners are usually celebrated in times of the year when there is less sun - fall and winter.

Melatonin that was mentioned above is in charge of your sleep/wake cycle, so it is programmed to make you start feeling tired when it gets dark out.

So, as you can see from the above, it’s a combination of events, time of year, types of food eaten, amount of food eaten and digestion, that contribute to this “turkey coma”. So don’t worry about going “cold turkey,” you can eat it, just eat less of the rest.

Simply Green Home Services Banned From Doing Business In BC Regulator warns consumers about bad door-to-door sales practices In light of a recent decision against a BC business, Consumer Protection BC wants British Columbians to know they have rights when it comes to door-todoor sales, especially with more people at home due to the pandemic.

In the last several years, the BC regulator has seen an increase in media and public concern about door to door sales in BC. One company in particular, Simply Green Home Services, has been the subject of numerous consumer complaints to Consumer Protection BC. “After a thorough investigation, we have banned Simply Green Home Services from engaging in door to door sales in BC for one year and have ordered them to pay a $8,000 penalty,” says Tatiana Chabeaux-Smith, Consumer Protection BC’s corporate spokesperson. “The ban will only be lifted once we are satisfied that they have changed their business practices.”

The Direct Sales Prohibition Order against Simply Green Home Services comes after the business breached an earlier compliance order, engaged in deceptive business practices, and failed to issue lawful refunds to consumers. Read the enforcement actions and the reasons for the decision.

With summer around the corner and BC still under COVID-19 restrictions, Consumer Protection BC wants people to be aware and informed when it

comes to door-to-door sales transactions.

“Not only are British Columbians spending more time at home these days, but many have been impacted financially by the pandemic. We want people to know how to spot an exploitative transaction and be able to exercise their rights under BC law,” says Chabeaux-Smith.

Consumer Protection BC’s tips for consumers: • Know your cancellation rights. For example, you have 10 days to cancel your door-to-door sales contract for any reason.

• Be cautious of down payments. If you’re asked to make a down payment, it can’t be more than 10 per cent of the total cost or $100 – whichever is less.

• Keep a copy of your contract. You must receive a copy of the contract at the time of signing or it’s not binding.

• Watch out for government rebate or environmental incentives. Sometimes these tactics can be exploited. If you’re ever ensure about a particular rebate, do your research and contact the source directly (i.e. BC Hydro, Fortis, etc.)

• Ensure you understand any financing in the contract. Do you know the total cost of the contract? Is it actually a long-term lease with costly financing?

• Know who to contact if there’s a problem.

Consumer Protection BC regulates the contents and cancellation rights for door to door sales contracts.

• Take your time and if you’re not sure, talk to someone you trust about it.

• If you feel pressured, just say no.

Mandatory Training Will Improve Safety For Commercial Drivers

Safer, more skilled commercial drivers will be travelling B.C. roads with the implementation of mandatory entry-level training (MELT) for new Class 1 commercial driver’s licence applicants.

“Safety for everyone on our roads is always our top priority, and this new required driver training program will make our highways safer,” said Rob Fleming, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure.

“A robust MELT program is just one of the ways we are committed to improving highway safety for all British Columbians.”

Effective Oct. 18, 2021, individuals applying for a B.C. Class 1 driver’s licence must successfully complete an ICBC-approved Class 1 MELT course before attempting a road test. B.C.’s MELT program was developed through a review of best practices from other Canadian jurisdictions and with input from industry in British Columbia. It was designed to align with the Standard 16-Class 1 Entry-Level Training framework introduced as part of the National Safety Code in February 2020.

“British Columbia’s new MELT program is an important step toward improving overall commercial vehicle safety across Canada,” said Lawrence and Ginny Hunter, Safer Roads Canada board members whose 18-year-old son Logan was fatally injured in the 2018 Humboldt Broncos bus crash. “Truck and bus drivers operate some of the heaviest vehicles on our roads through a variety of climates and on challenging routes. The risks are present every day for these workers, but programs like MELT help to mitigate these risks and prevent accidents.”

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure led consultations with the commercial driving industry, the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General and ICBC to finalize the curriculum. As the regulator of driver training schools and instructors in B.C., ICBC will oversee training facilities and investigate matters related to driving schools that deliver the Class 1 MELT course, as well as training courses for other driver’s licence classes.

“Our mandatory entry level training program teaches new drivers how to handle B.C.’s difficult terrain and actually exceeds the minimum requirements set by the National Safety Code Standard for Class 1 entry-level training,” said Lindsay Matthews, vice-president of public affairs and driver licensing, ICBC. “By harmonizing our program with other provinces, new commercial drivers in British Columbia will be able to smoothly and confidently operate across Canada.”

B.C.’s Class 1 MELT program requires 140 total hours and includes more practical behind-the-wheel driving hours, in-yard hours, and theoretical instructional hours than Standard 16 of the National Safety Code. In addition to 50 hours on-highway and 37 hours in-yard and around the vehicle, B.C. has 15.5 hours of theoretical and hands-on air brake training, almost double the 8.5 hours required by Standard 16

“The BCTA was pleased to contribute to the development of B.C.’s new Class 1 entry-level training program because ensuring new commercial drivers are trained to a higher, consistent standard will save lives,” said Dave Earle, president and CEO, BC Trucking Association. “Better trained operators will make better decisions and fewer mistakes, making for a stronger, more efficient trucking industry.”

To ensure commercial drivers are prepared for B.C.’s highway network and changing weather patterns, MELT will also emphasize safe operating practices for mountainous geography and a variety of challenging driving conditions. For example, all new Class 1 drivers will learn and demonstrate the ability to properly chain up their vehicle for winter driving.

The Class 1 MELT program has been delivered by approved driver training schools in B.C. since August 2021. There are currently 46 schools across the province qualified to offer MELT.

New Services Will Support People Living With Substance-Use Challenges

People living with substance-use challenges will soon benefit from expanded supports and services on central Vancouver Island.

Island Health issued three requests for proposals (RFPs) seeking service providers to deliver new programs for people living with substance-use challenges.

Funding for the new services is part of the Government of B.C.'s historic $500-million investment in Budget 2021 focused on building a comprehensive system of mental health and addictions care that people in British Columbia need.

“When people come forward for help with substance use, we want health care for them without delay," said Sheila Malcolmson, Minister of Mental Health and Addictions and MLA for Nanaimo.

“These new services will help transform addictions treatment and recovery care on central Vancouver Island where it is urgently needed.”

In three separate RFPs, Island Health is seeking service providers to deliver at least six sobering and

assessment beds in Tofino and Ucluelet, up to eight supportive recovery beds in Oceanside, and eight sobering and assessment beds in Nanaimo. Four of the Nanaimo beds will be new to the community. These services will increase the access points for support and treatment for people living with substance use.

“These new programs will improve access for people living with substance use and enhance the range of services and treatments to support their personal path to wellness,” said Leah Hollins, board chair, Island Health. “We’re grateful to the communities, individuals and organizations who have informed and supported us throughout this process. Your input has been invaluable.”

The RFPs were developed by Island Health through consultation with key community stakeholders in summer 2021. Stakeholders provided input on items such as access, needs, service models, clinical pathways, cultural safety and community connections.

The RFPs will close on Nov. 2, 2021, with services

anticipated to be in place by March 31, 2022.

“I’m grateful to everyone who participated in the engagement process, to make sure services meet the needs of their communities and municipalities,” said Adam Walker, MLA for Parksville-Qualicum. “These new services will help people get mental health and substance use support close to home.”

Now at the Village Gallery The ability to create is a human necessity; it helps us define who we are as human beings. For children it is part of learning and exploring our own human curiosity. From the moment we pick up a crayon and put it to paper it becomes an exploration of the world we live in. For children it is a chance to explore, observe and imitate, trying to figure out how things operate and how to control themselves and their environments. This unrestricted exploration helps children form connections in their brain, it helps them learn—and it’s also fun.

Art allows youth to practice a wide range of skills that are useful not only for life, but also for learning.
