Animal Problems?

Mice, and now rats, skunks, raccoons, beavers, coyotes….can all be problematic when they invade our property, eat our gardens, kill our animals. However if you look around and count how many of them exist (except for the mice and rats please!) and how many of us there are, you’ll soon see that they’re having a lot more problems with us than we are with them.

Still, that’s not the way my rabbits who got eaten by a skunk climbing up to their cages, see it.

Nor did our turkeys whose eggs got stolen repeatedly. So what are we to do? We tried live trapping them and take them elsewhere hoping they would survive without having to be trapped again, but they usually came back. We hate the thought of killing wild animals who naturally get attracted to the smell of barnyards but were getting to the point of considering it for we were completely out of ideas, and patience.

Luckily we’ve recently discovered there is a different way to do it, a way that works for the animals, and for us.

The solution consists of modifying the design of the property - sometimes even minor changes work - so that the animals considered pests cannot or will not come in what we consider our space. We met with a young man, Joe Abercrombie, who was moving beavers to a place where they would actually improve the terrain by minimizing fire dangers and protecting against floods, and found out that he’s now started a company called Humane Solutions, that helps people solve animal problems using humane solutions.

They now also offer property maintenance and design services so that anyone just starting out can avoid having animal problems. It seems to me that given that wildlife is in “catastrophic decline” according to research showing that wildlife populations have fallen by more than 66% over the last 50 years, we need to find new solutions that allow us to live with animals if we don’t want to meet the same fate of the unlucky 66% already gone.

A New Start

This morning when I sat down to write my article I heard a nasty bird strike on the kitchen window. Sure enough I went outside to find a small bird laying in the snow breathing, eyes open but obviously stunned.

I brought it in the house gently wrapped in a towel to stay warm until it regains its senses and Is able to be released outside again. This whole year so far seems to be an opportunity for a new start. One of the most important of new starts that has ever been needed in recent memory will occur this Week and I’m sure like many of you, my eyes will be riveted to the television on Wednesday for the Inauguration of President Joe Biden and Vice President Camila Harris. This will be a great improvement on the sanity and safety of the whole world and I hope it goes off calmly and peacefully.

The reliance of finding information, facts and ideas for way to many people have become blurred in rumours, suspicion, conspiracy theories, nasty words and lies. Most of this spread by the overuse and abuse of so call Social Media. No one seems to know the truths or is even willing to look further than their

noses to find them. It is a time perhaps for a new start here as well. Like my loving Mother used to say “ If you don’t have anything good to say, don’t say anything at all”.

I am busy planting and am hoping that this year will be a new start as well. Last year saw so many set backs starting with a 5 day blackout to start the year which of course was not so good for early seedlings not to mention being without heat, light or water for that length of time. Thank heavens that it wasn’t 25 below, that would have caused some damage. This year armed with a generator the one day of no power was hardly felt. Alzheimer’s Awareness Month

January is Alzheimer’s Awareness month. Alzheimer’s disease can be one of the scariest things we may have to face as we age. Know and recognize the symptoms; differentiate between the warnings of Alzheimer’s and the signs of normal aging.

What is Alzheimer ’s disease? It is the most common form of dementia. It’s a brain disorder that impacts your daily life through memory loss and cognitive changes. The Alzheimer’s Association currently estimates that one in ten people over the age of 65, and nearly one-third of those over 85, have Alzheimer’s.

While the primary risk factors of Alzheimer’s are age, family history and genetics, there are other risk factors that can pave the way for Alzheimer’s. Some things you can do to help prevent the disease are maintain a healthy diet, avoid high blood pressure, watch your weight, and avoid tobacco and excess alcohol. Also, try to stay socially connected and exercise your body as well as your mind. Early on-set Alzheimer’s affects people under the age of 65. It is rare and is mostly seen in patients with a family history of the disease.

Almost all of us over the age of 65 experience some

form of forgetfulness. It is normal for age-related brain shrinkage to produce changes in processing speed, attention and short-term memory. Understanding the difference is very important.

Here are some differences between ‘normal change’ and possible early Alzheimer’s: • Can’t find your keys versus routinely placing items in odd places, such as keys in the fridge or dishwasher.

• Searching for casual words and names versus forgetting names of family members and common objects, or substituting words with inappropriate ones.

• Briefly forget conversation details vs frequently forgetting entire conversations.

• Can’t find a recipe versus can’t follow the recipe directions.

• Making an occasional wrong turn versus getting lost in familiar places, not remembering how you got there or how to get home.

As of now there is no single definitive medical test for identifying Alzheimer’s. But seeking advice from

your doctor is crucial if you’re experiencing anything out of the ordinary. Although Alzheimer’s can be a life-altering diagnosis for you and those around you, it does not mean that your life is over. Remember that not all memory loss indicates Alzheimer’s and there is help available for those struggling.

Did you know that the best way to reduce your risk of developing a cognitive disease is to lead a healthy lifestyle? Since January is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, now is an ideal time to adopt or reinforce behaviours that keep your brain healthy. Here are some recommendations provided by the Alzheimer Society of Canada: • Challenge yourself. Learn a new language or take on a task like writing with your non-dominant hand.

• Play games. There are brain-boosting benefits to solving crosswords, playing chess and completing puzzles.

• Talk to people. Engage in conversations about current events, books, music, sports and more.

• Eat a balanced diet. Make sure to follow the recommendations in Canada’s Food Guide.

• Exercise regularly. Keep in mind that it’s easier to stay motivated if you choose activities you enjoy.

• Reduce your stress. Explore a variety of strategies such as speaking with a psychologist, meditat-

ing, journaling and practising yoga.

• Prioritize sleep. Get seven to nine hours of rest every night and avoid looking at screens before you go to bed.

Weight loss 1O1 - SALT Sore knees, hips, puffy fingers and ankles. Sometimes we don’t even know how ill we are. It is a viscous cycle, too sore to move so we don’t move and less movement leads to boredom which usually leads to overeating.

Obviously, a change in habits is needed, but seems just too hard. It could be as simple as inflammation which causes water retention. Many don’t even realize they are experiencing this. I had a client lose 20lb in 10 days from fluid retention. At first you may think this is too much too fast. But the truth is, this was purely bound up fluid that just needed to be unplugged, by eliminating what was causing the retention. I actually had her eat more than she had been eating – but just the right stuff.

Let’s start with a very simple solution that you may try. Limiting your intake of salt i.e., sodium chloride Recommended daily sodium intake is 1500mg – 2000mg per day. Many of us are way over this amount, usually coming in around 3000mg or more a day. This is an easy feat, since 1 teaspoon of table salt has 2300mgs. So, what is sodium? Sodium is a very important electrolyte in our body, that helps with fluid control along with its antagonist potassium. How they work: In a nut shell sodium retains or reabsorbs water and potassium releases water. So why is this important? Reabsorption is important otherwise mass amounts of water would be lost in the feces, causing dangerous dehydration and diarrhea. Potassium on the other hand, does the opposite, by letting water go, keeping this important balance.

Too much sodium can cause hypertension (high blood pressure) also known as the silent killer, as it is difficult to feel or notice any signs. However, if sensitive to it, you will retain a lot of water and or weight gain. Start noting sodium intake. Most fast food, or packaged processed meals, will have a lot of sodium.

Let’s take a look at a few simple things you may have in your house without even knowing the impact.

Sauces/spreads • 1 tbsp soy sauce 900mg • 1 tbsp ketchup 140mg • 1 tbsp cheese whiz 210mg • 1 tbsp salad dressing (depending on type) 100150mg • 1 tsp Franks red hot sauce190mg Convenience/fast foods • 1 slice 14’ pepperoni pizza (depending on brand) 600-700mg • thru bacon egg breakfast sandwich is 740mg • ½ cup canned soup (depending on brand) 600900mg • 1 hot dog 300mg • 1 hot bun 210mg • Mr. Noodle 1 package 1722mg • Lunch meat 100g 1293mg • 1 slice processed cheese 230mg These are just a few examples but you can see how quickly it can add up. Lots of foods have natural occurring salts but they are with other compounds as potassium so they are balanced and part of an everyday normal diet, as opposed to added salts as listed above.

To recap if you find you are puffy, joints are sore, you can’t seem to lose weight this may be as simple as lowering your sodium intake, if you tend to eat many added salts. If you eat well, then there could be other things to look for as sugar intake, which will be continued next week.

7 Ways To Move More Every Day

Many of today’s jobs, hobbies and modes of transportation make it easy to succumb to a sedentary lifestyle. Unfortunately, prolonged periods of inactivity are linked to an increased risk of heart disease, diabetes and obesity. If you find yourself sitting too often, here are seven simple ways to incorporate more movement into your daily routine.

1. Sit on a stability ball rather than the couch while you watch TV or play video games.

2. Walk around the room while you’re on the phone. For longer calls, consider taking a stroll around the block.

3. Listen to audiobooks or podcasts while you use an elliptical machine, stationary bike or treadmill to make your workout more interesting.

4. Use a standing desk. Do simple exercises, such as calf raises, while you complete routine tasks like checking your email.

5. Time how long it takes you to do an active chore like vacuuming, and then see if you can beat your previous record.

6. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. To really get your heart pumping, climb them two steps at a time.

7. Do jumping jacks or run in place during the commercial breaks while you watch a hockey or basketball game on TV. With a little bit of creativity and effort, there are plenty of simple and fun ways to be more active.

This is a column meant for fun and some information About myself: I am a Freelance Photographer you often see me on the side of the road or in various places taking photos of different things animals, birds, places, people etc. l have lived in Lumby just over 8 years,you have seen my photos in the newspaper (Lumby Valley Times) and once in awhile in the Vernon Morning Star, and the Lumby Art Gallery. Photography is my passion. Disclaimer: The information on some of my photos that I write about a lot of times come from the Internet or books I research them, hopefully the facts are as close to the truth as I can come.

The Lake In Winter hawks we saw along the way. Hawks were not on our list this time, as they were on the December list for the Bird count, but that didn't stop us from admiring them and taking their pictures anyways. We still had not seen any Eagles or Swans.

We slowly made our way to Mabel Lake (pictured) if you have never been to Mabel Lake in the winter, you really have to take a drive down there. Be careful the road to there right now can be a bit slippery, so put your vehicle in low 4x4 that will help.

We arrived at the lake, it was of course stunning!

There was some snow, and blues skies. As I walked closer to the lake, I saw what I had hoped to see. We still had not seen now providing care in the beautiful setting of any Eagles.

After awhile, we left the lake.

Ta Da down the road was a Bald Eagle! We Centennial Park - 9780 School Road were all very excited to see this, as after the EaARMSTRONG ~ COLDSTREAM ~ LAVINGTON ~ VERNON gles are apart of the count.

For about a week or longer I have been stoked. One of my favorite times was coming up. The day finally arrived. I got up early, and got ready. Here it was, January 19 2021. This was the Eagle and Swan count day. I love this day. There is a small group of us that go out to find how many Swans and Eagle we can find. It is a good day trip getting us out of the house.

Also this was also the day that BC Hydro was shutting off the power for Lumby from 8:00 am - 12:00 pm, so it was a good thing to get out of the house anyways.

The weather was good, most of the roads were okay, although some were a little icy, or slippery.

Because of the Covid 19 we could not carpool unless of course we are from the same household. So this year there were four cars and five people on our route. (Tim and I in one car). It was fabulous. We started out on Hurt Road. We saw nothing there.

We then travelled along Mabel Lake Road stopping here and there to take some pictures of the many

So after taking several pictures we moved on. Down the road we stopped to have our lunch. As we were eating we could hear the sound of more Trumpeter Swans. We were higher up on the road, and the lake was a ways down, the three of them decided to check it out, Tim and I stayed behind. They trampled down the hill, going through a lot of bush. There they had found two more pairs of Trumpeter Swans, and saw another Bald Eagle.

When they returned to the the road, we all got in our cars again. Driving down the road there was a flurry of Crows. We stopped, there right in front of us was a beautiful Golden Eagle, and in the opposite tree across from him was a Juvenile Bald Eagle.

We knew then that there must be something dead, and when we looked we saw it. Yup there was a dead Racoon that they all had been feasting on. On the road further down in the trees we could faintly see two Bald Eagles. They must have snacked earlier as they were not near the carcass.

After the Eagles had flown off we left that area, we travelled down Rawlings Lake Road, but unfortunately that lake was frozen over once again so we did not see anything there. We then went to Whitevale, nope nothing there, it was time to come home.

Former Lumby Resident Publishes A Page Turner thor’s unique and well written historical story line that tells all about his circuitous life and the times he lived in. The 408-page publication that includes stories of the author’s childhood spent in Lumby is now being sold at book outlets here and throughout the world. When asked about the success of the publication, Bickert stated, “I intended that the book would be a family legacy document and had no idea that my memoir would have any commercial value, nor significant literary success! My wife, whom I feared would be my biggest critic, said she thought it was a good read, so I submitted the manuscript to a publisher.”

Bickert is working on his second manuscript which he’s keeping the theme quiet for now.

“Writing’s an excellent Pandemic project,” he states.

Helping Artists Adapt During The Pandemic Professional artists and others who work in the arts can get more support to help with challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic though a new grant program.

"Together with the arts sector, we are working hard to make sure that dancers, writers, painters and other artists can continue being resilient and finding innovative ways to keep creating through COVID-19," said Melanie Mark, Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport.

"We're building on our support for arts and culture in British Columbia by helping artists adapt their work, ensuring our province has a strong creative industry to enjoy when the pandemic is over."

Many artists have been unable to work or worked less due to the temporary closures of venues and restricted audience sizes. The B.C. government is creating a new $500,000 Pivot for Individuals program through the BC Arts Council to help professional artists, cultural workers and arts administrators adapt to these challenges.

Through the BC Arts Council's new program, people can apply for up to $12,000 to learn new skills or adapt their practices. Artists can apply for a grant for things such as

modifying a dance piece for a smaller audience or learning new skills, such as video editing. Artists are also able to apply for support for professional development, like mentorship or training.

The program is available to professional artists and cultural workers, including: • dancers and choreographers; • visual artists; • writers & actors; • multi-media artists; and arts administrators.

Applications are open until Feb. 16, 2021. The BC Arts Council will adjudicate and award the grants in early spring 2021.

A literary excellence award has been given to Dr. Paul Bickert of Kelowna, a former Lumby resident from 1947-54, by American book publisher, Writers Republic of Union City, N.J. for his recently penned memoir. Golden Throat: My Journey with Family in Faith is a ‘page turner’ that begins with his mother’s death in Kelowna in 2001. The story goes back to her roots in Saskatchewan Canada and then eventual arrival in Lumby, British Columbia after the war ended and then her failed marriage after giving birth to a son and finding herself pregnant with a second baby, being the author, due in three months.

The early life of the author, begin on the Marquis, Saskatchewan farm where his mother was raised.

Much later, during his career as a radio broadcaster, the writer earned the nickname, that also happens to be part of the title of the book, ‘Golden Throat.’ The broadcaster, Bickert, studies in Davenport, Iowa to become a practicing chiropractor who eventually resides and invents a wireless technology while residing here in Kelowna. The publisher’s Golden Seal Plume Literary Excellence citation was granted for the au-

VERNON, B.C.— Successfully exporting overseas was once a possibility only for those who could travel across the globe to meet with potential partners in-person at trade shows. Now, with travel at a halt, and relationships and opportunities moving ahead online, exporting is a possibility for just about anyone with an exportable product or service.

“There has always been a huge potential with exporting, and now with the global economy, it's a much more even playing field with opportunities worth exploring,” says Amber Piché, the new Export Navigator Advisor for the Thompson-Okanagan region. The Provincial Export Navigator program supports entrepreneurs with free advice from export specialists to help determine readiness and strategies for exporting successfully, from product development and marketing to financials, networking and logistics.

Piché, who grew up in West Kelowna, has a strong understanding of marketing for key Okanagan in-

dustries and experience running a business and doing business internationally. Her career began in three core sectors: tourism, hospitality and wine, with roles at Mission Hill Family Estate Winery, the Kelowna Museum Society, The Laurel Packinghouse Wine Museum and The Grand Okanagan Resort. Piché’s recent role in business development for an international corporate technology firm allowed her to travel the world, while making important contacts along the way. She says she is looking forward to putting her background to work to help business owners explore the possibilities of exporting.

“I’ve always enjoyed helping companies improve their business operations in the areas of marketing and business development, for example. I love seeing others realize their dreams and am grateful that I get to be part of the process," says Piché, who will be supporting Export Navigator clients across the North Okanagan as well as Penticton, Summerland, Salmon Arm and Sicamous.
