Arts & Culture from the Edge

Artist in Residence The Village Gallery is hosting a new show starting January 4, 2021 with the figurative art of Nina Westaway, a long-time volunteer with the gallery and Monashee Arts Council. It is part educational and part-revelatory, exploring how figure drawing and portraiture can be taught and experienced. She is also offering one-on-one free workshops, for an hour on Saturdays: January 9, 16, 23, and 30. All materials will be supplied. Adults and children 12 years and over are welcome to register, and no experience is necessary. Four different topics are offered. The lessons are scheduled from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm at the gallery, 1975 Vernon Street (Highway 6). Please phone 778473-3029 for the list of topics and to schedule lessons.

Can You Compost In Winter?

Composting creates nutrient-rich soil for your garden and helps reduce landfill waste. If you want an easy way to shrink your carbon footprint yearround, consider composting. It’s perfectly fine to put food scraps in your compost bin in every season, even winter.

Surprising advantages Although the cold weather will slow and sometimes halt decomposition in winter, it’ll also quickly freeze any kitchen scraps you add. This means you don’t have to worry about the smell of half-rotted food attracting flies or critters. Plus, freeze-thaw cycles actually help break down organic materials, which will allow them to decompose faster in spring when the warm weather returns.

Additionally, the process of maintaining a compost pile is much simpler in the winter. In fact, it’s best not to stir or water it since any disruption

Choose A Focus Word Of The Year

With the start of a new year, it is a natural time for reflection, celebration, and forethought to the year ahead. Many of us will be thinking about New Year resolutions, which should be reframed as intentions, because they too often get dismissed after a few days or if you’re lucky weeks. If you were to do one thing related to planning right now, choosing a Focus Word should be it.

A Focus Word is sometimes about doing, but more often it’s about a way of doing or being. It has the ability to guide your thinking and ultimately your actions. It recurs in your mind to keep you attentive to that which you have decided warrants your energy and resources. It serves as a powerful reminder of how you want to show up.

To find your Focus Word, you will have to dig a little deeper. Your word only has to be meaningful to you and you can keep it completely to yourself if you wish.

Choosing one word is perhaps more difficult than choosing several words, but ultimately has greater impact, and is simpler to apply. If you have more words, you will have to move between them and ap-

ply your resources to all. Landing on one word has a simplicity and elegance and the constraint forces deeper thinking and some tough choices.

That said, one word often has several partner words which go along with it. Find the cluster of related words which help give the depth of meaning you are looking for. This might make it easier to land on one. That word cluster ought to feel like a nourishing broth from which you’ll drink, daily.

Get ready for some extreme self-reflection and simmering. Some words feel onerous and constrictive, whereas others feel motivating. Don’t be afraid to let go of a word and move on. Look for a word you’ll like to tango with this year. A word which will lead you towards good things.

Here are some questions to ask yourself to generate your own Focus Word. To get to your word, you will want to combine careful thought and idea incubation. Let a few words come to you. Feel the word. You’ll know when you’ve hit the right one.

1. If you could skip ahead a year and reflect on 2021, what would you like to be proud of?

2. If you’ve set goals for the year, is there a word that could serve as a foundation to that success?

3. Are there moments from the past you wish you could have handled better? What word comes up to help support shifts in a positive direction?

4. Who inspires you? What word describes them?

5. How do you feel when you think of this word?

6. Does this word apply broadly to your life?

The more areas for which it is useful, the more powerful the word.

A word will only be useful to you if you hold it in your mind. Here are a few ideas for you: 1. Write the word in a prominent place – by your bed, bathroom mirror, in your daily planner, incorporate it into jewelry or a piece of art 2. Incorporate the word in a daily meditation 3. Journal with the word in mind. Set an intention every morning with respect to the word.

Reflect each night on how you showed up.

Celebrate the wins. Learn from the challenges.

4. Tell others about your word – incorporate it in regular meetings with your good friends and family.

New Years Resolutions

The New year resolution time is upon us, and this is the time most people think of their health goals.

Usually this consists of losing weight, as the number 1 goal. Often this is attempted through fad diets, extreme fasts, or excessive exercise that usually causes pain, injury, and discomfort. All these things usually don’t last long and if they do, old habits return and the weight piles back on. There needs to be a different mindset, as the outlook must be long term and realistic. Start small, change one habit, exercise wise and food wise, then stick to it and add on gradually with new habits to change. This may be as simple as moving around more, not necessarily regimented exercise but movement, whether that is getting up every 30 minutes to stretch or a short walk. Food wise this may mean eating a healthy breakfast with your coffee vs just coffee or it might be slowly weaning yourself off sugar in your coffee or less sugary drinks in general.

There are so many underlying conditions that we ignore because we don’t see them physically and they are not as sexy as “weight loss” but are most important to our health. These different markers are: Blood pressure, cholesterol, heart rate and blood sugar levels.

Once the focus is changed on getting these in healthy ranges, the mindset becomes different. The focus is no longer on weight loss at whatever cost, but now about getting healthy. Weight usually naturally follows along, as you are able to focus on feeding your

body properly and giving it the movement, it requires.

For some people exercise as we think of it, may be too difficult as it could be uncomfortable and hurt due to inflammation, sore joints, fatigue, or a host of other conditions. The focus should then be to start with proper nutrition and general movement, as mentioned above. Once you start feeling better and have more energy – which you will, then movement will naturally turn into more traditional exercise, as it became enjoyable and not painful. Cheryl, a client I started working with last year, could barely walk when I first met her, she had many health conditions and water retention that it made it hard for her to even stand. She now hikes, runs and even wants to start cross country skiing. She now knows how her body reacts to certain foods and has a lifestyle she sustains easily. For some reason we have been swayed into thinking whole foods are boring and exercise is too hard and that when we reach a certain age medication is just a normal part of life. This is 100% false (other than family history). Proper nutrition and exercise in one form or another will allow you to prevent or reverse many chronic diseases that are brought on by lifestyle. Processed, fatty, sugary, salty, many packaged or convenient foods and a sedentary lifestyle, are all contributors to these lifestyle preventable diseas-

es. However, I wouldn’t say for someone to never eat “junk foods” because that is also unrealistic, as these can be part of many social events and can be enjoyed.

But the truth is, these foods should be limited. Follow a 80/20 rule - 80% of the time you eat nutritiously, 20% is whatever. Once you change your foods, your palette will change and all of a sudden, your taste buds wake up and you taste foods naturally for what they are, the natural sugars and salts will come alive along with a new found energy in your body. We don’t want to live - dying, we want to live - living, able to do things we strive to do without pain, medication or disease.

The War Amps Key Tag Service Celebrates 75 Years The War Amps Key Tag Service is celebrating a milestone this year – its 75th anniversary! The service has not only been reuniting Canadians with their lost keys, it has been helping to make a difference in the lives of amputees. To date, more than 1.5 million sets of lost keys have been returned to their owners.

Although it’s a free service, donations enable the Association to operate its many programs for amputees, including veterans and children.

I am missing both legs below the knee and was enrolled in The War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program at a young age. Growing up in CHAMP has person I am today, by providing me and my family allowed me to become the strong and independent with funding for artificial limbs, emotional support, and vital resources on living with amputation.

The War Amps 2021 key tags are being mailed to B.C. residents next week and I would like to say thank you to everyone that has so generously donated to such an essential cause. This support has truly impacted my life and the lives of so many other amputees. We can't thank you enough!

This is a column meant for fun and some information About myself: I am a Freelance Photographer you often see me on the side of the road or in various places taking photos of different things animals, birds, places, people etc. l have lived in Lumby just over 8 years,you have seen my photos in the newspaper (Lumby Valley Times) and once in awhile in the Vernon Morning Star, and the Lumby Art Gallery. Photography is my passion. Disclaimer: The information on some of my photos that I write about a lot of times come from the Internet or books I research them, hopefully the facts are as close to the truth as I can come.

Traditional or Non- Traditional?

Wow! What a roller coaster ride 2020 was! Let's hope 2021 will be better.

A lot of things changed last year for everyone.

Places closed down, home schooling became the new norm. Masks become Mandatory People were on edge. Etc. All of a sudden along came Christmas. Usually I start to decorate my place in the first week or so of December. I put up decorations in the house, in the dining room, kitchen and living room. The last thing to go up is of course the artificial green tree. This of course has lots of ornaments, garlands, and lights of many colors. Then on Christmas Day we would have Steak and Lobster for dinner ( that's right, I said Steak and Lobster not Turkey it is not a misprint) then we would go to the movies and catch the latest movie in 3D. On New Year's Eve we usually would go to the Legion and dance the night away to the music of our great band RedDog. This year was different, I didn't decorate in the be-

ginning of December, in fact it was about a week before Christmas, the only room that got a little bit of decorating was the dining room, and that was only a very small area.

I took one of our 6 foot tables that I use at my markets, and put some Christmas tablecloths on it. Then I thought: "hmm, it was not a traditional year, why should I have a traditional Christmas?"

So I put my Penguin ( I love Penguins) at the back where he could be plugged in, then I put out some smaller decorations.

Now came the part for the tree. I looked at the box that held my artificial green tree and thought " no, not this time." I then pulled out my gold star tree and my silver star tree ( they are only about 2' tall) that I use at my markets to hold smaller things on . I decorated my silver tree with different ornaments that I have made over the years, including of course my photo ornaments. Added lights and "Presto" a cool tree was created. On the gold tree instead of us-

Planning And Preparation Key To Backcountry Safety

The Vernon North Okanagan RCMP and Vernon Search and Rescue would like to remind anyone venturing out into the wilderness to be prepared, and to make good decisions while in the backcountry.

As of January 8, 2021, police have required assistance from local search and rescue organizations in reaching lost or stranded people on four occasions.

On both January 2nd, 2021 and January 3rd, 2021, Vernon Search and Rescue was mobilized to assist stranded snowmobilers in Hunter’s Range east of Enderby. The callouts continued on January 5th, 2021 when Central Okanagan Search and Rescue assisted police in locating a person in medical distress in the Fintry area of Westside Road. At the same time, Vernon Search and Rescue, who normally would respond to the Fintry area, was engaged in a search for a snowmobiler who had become stranded in the Lumby area.

“We are incredibly fortunate to have these professional, dedicated, highly skilled volunteers with the training and capabilities they do, in our communities.”

Stated Constable Chris Terleski, Media Relations Officer for the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP. “If you need them, they will come, but those venturing into the backcountry are ultimately responsible for their own safety and by not taking any undue risks, and by being properly prepared, they can reduce the incidents of needing SAR.” Being properly prepared allows you to manage and reduce the risks of backcountry travel, and that means planning for what may happen, not simply what you think may happen. A sudden change in weather conditions or an unexpected event could turn a simple hike into a crisis, or cause you to become lost or injured and in need of rescue.

While this list is not exhaustive, here are some steps to take to ensure you have a safe and enjoyable trip into the wilderness.

Leave a plan with a family member or friend; even if

you are going for a short time.

This person can give accurate details to police if you do not return as planned.

Plan activities that are within your skills and abilities. Seek education and training opportunities before you go.

Be well informed about the terrain when embarking on a backcountry trip.

Never go alone, stick together, and remember, those who go ahead or fall behind are more likely to get lost.

Take the essentials: • Light • Signaling device: whistle, flare, mirror • Fire starter • Warm clothes • Pocket knife • Shelter/emergency blanket • Water and food • First aid kit appropriate for the activity • Compass/GPS for navigation • Communications – Do not rely entirely on your cellphone, consider having a Garmin inReach, SPOT, or other satellite communication device • If you are heading into avalanche terrain, plan ahead and check www.avalanche.ca for current snow conditions. Taking an avalanche awareness course or Avalanche Level 1 course is strongly recommended.

• Each member in a group should have a probe, shovel, and transceiver/beacon. Be proficient in their use prior to going out; a stressful or life threatening situation is not the time to figure it

out.

"When you realize you are lost or in trouble, it is best to stay in place. We teach the children to Hug A Tree. The same goes for adults. It keeps everyone safe and reduces the search area. Stated Coralie Nairn, spokesperson for Vernon Search and Rescue. "A great free resource is the AdventureSmart.ca, they have a free Trip Plan App that aids policing and SAR units."

VSAR provides these essential, life saving services free of charge and should you become lost or in need of assistance, do not be afraid to call for help, and call early. The faster help can mobilize, the less time you are exposed to the elements.

“Double check your gear, then check it again. Taking these steps can greatly reduce the amount of time it may take rescuers to locate you in an emergency, which could be significant in a life or death situation.”

Adds Terleski. “Being aware of what could happen, and properly preparing for it in advance, will allow you to enjoy your adventure and allow you to manage unexpected situations should they arise.”

Province Doubles CleanBC Home Energy Retrofit Rebates

The Province is doubling CleanBC Better Homes retrofit rebates for select home-heating and energy-efficiency upgrades to support B.C.'s economic recovery and help British Columbians save on energy costs.

"With many people continuing to work from home due to the pandemic, we're doubling popular CleanBC rebates for select home energy retrofits and upgrades," said Bruce Ralston, Minister of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation. "Together with our partners, we are helping families switch from fossil fuels to clean energy and make their homes as efficient, comfortable and affordable as possible."

The Province's CleanBC plan aims to reduce the environmental impact of existing buildings and to waste less energy. By using more clean energy and using it more efficiently in homes and buildings, British Columbians can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality.

"People want affordable options to heat their homes with clean energy to reduce pollution and help address climate change," said George Heyman, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy. "By doubling our support through CleanBC, we're helping people improve the places they live with more incentives to make the switch to cleaner, more efficient technologies and supporting good jobs across the province as we recover from COVID-19."

heating equipment, while saving energy and reducing greenhouse gases, have increased as follows until June 30, 2021: • double the rebate from $3,000 to $6,000 when switching from a fossil fuel heating system to a high-efficiency heat pump; • double the rebate from $1,000 to $2,000 when switching from a fossil fuel water heater to a heat pump water heater; • double the rebate from $500 to $1,000 for an electrical service upgrade when switching from a fossil fuel heating system to a heat pump; and • a $3,000 rebate on an interest-free loan when switching from a fossil fuel heating system to a high-efficiency heat pump and accessing the CleanBC low-interest financing program.

Applicants must pre-register for a promo code by March 31, 2021, and complete their upgrades by June 30, 2021, to participate.

British Columbians wanting to switch from fossil fuel-based heating to cleaner, more energy-efficient heat pumps also have access to low-interest financing as part of CleanBC. Depending on the type and efficiency of heat pump chosen by homeowners, the loans have interest rates as low as 0% over a five-year repayment period. The double rebate offer is being matched for the low-interest financing program for a limited time. Homeowners will automatically receive a $3,000 rebate on their loan for an eligible heat pump installed before June 30, 2021, without the need to register for a promo code.

In addition to these limited-time offers, two new programs have launched to further assist British Columbians in constructing and renovating more energy-efficient buildings. The Better Homes New Construction Program offers builders thousands of dollars for new residential construction in accordance

with the BC Energy Step Code or for homes built with high-efficiency heat pumps. The Commercial Express Program provides financial incentives to builders who are retrofitting existing buildings, with a streamlined application process. Both programs are administered by BC Hydro.

Quick Facts: • The CleanBC Better Homes Program is available to households around the province and includes low-income targeted offers.

• In 2019, 10% of B.C. households were using heat pumps as their primary or secondary heating source, up from only 3% in 2007.

Home Remedies: The Good, The Bad And The Weird Donna Easto, C.H., H.C., M.H., Certified Herbal Educator Since COVID, people are increasingly turning to the internet and word-of-mouth for traditional home remedies. Many of these are familiar and reliable, for example, hydrogen peroxide for softening ear wax; ginger for nausea; cool tea bags on puffy eyes; prunes for constipation; oatmeal baths for itchy skin; Cranberry juice for staving off urinary tract infections; honey for coughs; lavender for sleep, aloe for burns; Witch Hazel for hemorrhoids and the mother of all home remedies, chicken soup (affectionately known as Jewish penicillin.)

However, over the ages, there have been some bizarre remedies and treatments, most aren’t around now, but some proved surprisingly effective and are still in use today: The tooth in the eye. Developed in the early 1960s, this medical procedure is used to restore vision in the most severe end-stage corneal blindness cases. It starts with the removal of a tooth from the patient or a donor. After removal, a lamina of tissue cut from the tooth is drilled and fitted with optics. The lamina is grown in the patients' cheek for a period of months to develop its own blood supply and then implanted

upon the eye. It’s proven to work.

Mouse in the house? Lucky you, a paste of dead mice was used in ancient Egypt to treat coughs and toothaches. Warts? Try placing ½ a dead mouse over the area. It seemed to work in the 1500s but happily is now out of favour.

Seeking eternal life? Forget the toxic mercury elixir. As Chinese Emperor Qin Shin Huang discovered, mercury causes vision loss, neuropathy, lack of coordination, impaired hearing, muscle weakness and death.

Tipsy toes. Stinky Feet? Buy a bottle of pure (not flavoured) 80 proof Vodka. Next, dampen a cotton ball with the liquor and rub it over your feet. The high alcohol content kills the bacteria causing your foot odour. You can also combine ¼ cup of Vodka with 3-4 drops of pure tea tree oil in a dark glass spray bottle. Spritz onto the bottoms of your feet.

Fart sniffing. It was common during the Black Death to keep a flatulent cow in the home to counteract exposure. I don’t expect it will work any better with COVID than it did with the Bubonic plague.

Speaking of gassy cows, Burger King has introduced a reduced methane patty created by adding Lemongrass to cattle feed. What first caught my attention was their video advertisement featuring “a country

jingle and a yodeling, guitar-playing boy who emerges from a cow’s “dairy air” singing, “When cows fart and burp and splatter, well, it ain’t no laughing matter….”1 Other researchers are currently looking into the addition of methane-reducing seaweeds, garlic and bitter orange extracts to cattle feed.

Note: Though we may eventually find that certain herbs may be beneficial for the coronavirus, the science is scarce and now is not the time to start experimenting with herbal remedies on your own.

Canada Revenue Agency To Begin Issuing T4As To Covid-19 Emergency And Recovery Benefit Recipients Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Government of Canada rolled out measures to support Canadians through this public health crisis. This assistance has included the delivery of unprecedented financial support programs through the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), such as the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB), the Canada Emergency Student Benefit (CESB), the Canada Recovery Benefit (CRB), the Canada Recovery Sickness Benefit (CRSB), and the Canada Recovery Caregiving Benefit (CRCB) . As stated from the beginning, these benefits - which have helped millions of Canadians put food on the table and keep a roof over their head during this crisis - are taxable.

As we approach the launch of the 2021 tax season, the CRA remains committed to putting people first and providing the support Canadians need as they continue to do their part to limit the spread of COVID-19.

Starting today, Canadians will begin receiving T4A slips from the CRA for these benefits to support their tax filing. The T4A is virtually identical to the T4 slips Canadians are used to receiving from their employers, but rather than employment income, they provide the amounts of COVID-19 benefits received from the CRA in 2020. Residents of Quebec will receive both a

T4A and a RL-1 slip. T4As will be sent out in waves.

If you have questions about the slip, including if you think there may be a mistake or have received it in error, please contact the CRA by phone at 1-800-9598281 or, for those outside of Canada and the US, at 1-613-940-8495. The CRA knows there have been questions in recent weeks about eligibility for these programs. The Government of Canada continues to look at options to respond to these concerns as we continue to support Canadians through this crisis.

Quick facts • Canadians who received relief payments but do not get a T4A slip by March 10th need not worry.

They may be able to get a copy by using the My Account for individuals service or contacting the CRA directly.

• Canadians who received benefits from Service Canada will receive a T4E Statement of Employment Insurance and Other Benefits from Service Canada in order to complete their 2020 tax and benefit return. Contact Service Canada for more information on T4Es and when they can be expected.

• Information from a T4E will need to be entered on line 11900 of your 2020 income tax and benefit

return. As with a T4A, this information could be entered automatically for individuals who are registered for My Account, use the Auto-fill my return function, and file with NETFILE-certified software.
