• To stop procrastinating. But I’ll wait until tomorrow to start.

Funding Announced For Wood Stove Exchange Rebate Program Communities throughout the province will benefit from cleaner air as a result of $270,000 from the 2020-21 Wood Stove Exchange Program.

The program provides incentives to people replacing old, smoky wood stoves with cleaner options.

A total of 19 communities have applied for funding to continue their exchange program, or have sufficient funding from previous years to continue offering rebates to their residents. The Lavington Life Society, covering the Lumby, Lavington and Cherryville areas, received $8,600.

“This program has been very successful in encouraging people to switch to cleaner wood stoves or different technologies entirely,” said George Heyman, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy. “I’m very pleased these local governments are continuing to support this program and are working with the Province and health agencies to reduce harmful emissions.”

Burning wood creates significant air pollution by increasing particulate matter in the air. Also known as PM 2.5, this fine particulate matter can cause health problems. The Wood Stove Exchange Program reduces local air pollution by helping people trade out old wood stoves for cleaner sources of heat, such as electric heat pumps, gas or pellet stoves, or new emission-certified wood stoves.

How to Survive New Year 2021

For many seniors, the New Year will be very different this year. In this article, we provide four basic tips to help bolster our mental health during and after the 2020 holiday season.

Holidays are traditionally a time to share food and frolic with our nearest and dearest. For most of us, this was unlikely the case this year.

With travel restrictions and quarantines in place, we were forced to adjust.

At a time when family and friends are normally the closest, this year, they will be farther away. Looking after our mental health in a proactive way is more important than ever as we enter 2021.

Thank You Lumby and Area D,

We just wanted to share an amazing day, December 19, 2020, with you.

Our local residents who requested hampers from the food bank arrived at prearranged times. Each recipient had a handy male volunteer to take items to their vehicles.

There were 3 stations at the food bank: Door #1 Recipients got their dry goods, vegetables and envelopes/cards-- and a smile.

Door #2 Recipients were presented with gift bags for the children (No toys were handed by the food bank) and their breads, rolls/buns and baked treats.

This door was also where the music came from and was run by two teenagers.

Door #3 Recipients picked up their turkey/ ham, bacon, eggs, margarine and milk. Then they were wished a Merry Christmas.

There was enough in their hampers for Breakfast on Christmas Morning and Christmas Dinner!

If they signed up for donations from the toy run, (and some folks did not sign up, the food bank still provided the children and ages to the toy run, and submitted their information without a request from the parent.

We think the parents were just as surprised as their children were!), the recipients were advised to go over to the OAP hall where they were provided with bags containing gifts for all the children in their care. Again they were all wished a Merry Christmas.

The last person who picked up their children's gifts at the OAP hall made us realize why we do this, as she was so grateful for the bags of toys given to her, as well as one special gift that her younger children will definitely love.

We were even able to help an additional Lumby family two days before Christmas by providing them with a food hamper and toys too.

Thank you to the people of Lumby and Area D for being so giving and caring to your neighbours.

We would also like to share a special thank you from the residents of Falkland, as they saw the pictures at the Lumby Food Bank of all the stuff collected, and one of their residents advised that Falkland does not have a food bank. Thank goodness we had some extra food and toys, as we were able to supply a few seniors and a couple of families in Falkland with some Christmas Food Hampers and some toys for the families.

A special thank you to all the organizations (the OAP Hall, the Lumby Food Bank, Lumby Teens Count Too, the Lumby Lions, the Lumby Museum, the Lumby Firefighters, the Lumby Police Department, Cooper (and Jerry) and many more), who helped this happen. Also, thank you to the Snak Shac, Ace Hardware, Fields, Sisters and the Rusty Spur for having our collection boxes at your places of business.

Driven

When Danielle Gordon of Cherryville first joined Monashee Toastmasters in 2014, she had already lived a very full and adventuresome life. We listened open-mouthed as she told us of leaving a difficult home life and couch surfing with friends in Whitehorse. She moved on to large, southern Canadian cities where she sometimes lived on the streets. She received a lot of support from her Indigenous friends and family members. Danielle had an important story to tell and we knew that we could help her do that using the spoken word. We valued Danielle, her energy and enthusiasm as she developed her communication skills with Monashee Toastmasters.

Then it was time for Danielle to develop her writing skills; using writing technique to appeal to the eye, not just the ear. Time working with world renowned motivational speaker Brian Tracy proved well spent when she was recognized with an Editor's Choice award

from Celebrity Press for her contribution to Driven, Tracy's new self-improvement book.

Danielle rejoined Monashee Toastmasters in July, 2020 and we are delighted to be working with her to polish her communication skills and develop her leadership skills. Her plans include Mexico and working towards her B.A. degree from Thompson Rivers University with her special interest in Indigenous Tourism Management as well as becoming a yoga teacher. No matter where she lives, Danielle has a great future ahead of her.

Supports For People, Businesses In 2020 Helping Build Recovery For Everyone By taking action to support people and businesses impacted by the global pandemic, Premier John Horgan and the B.C. government have begun building a strong economic recovery that includes everyone in British Columbia.

“British Columbians came together to face the challenge of COVID-19 with resilience and strength, and while there’s light at the end of the tunnel with vaccines arriving daily, the road to recovery is still ahead of us,” said Premier John Horgan. “The actions we’ve taken to invest in people and support small businesses in our communities are helping us ensure recovery includes everyone – not just those at the top. We’ve come a long way together, but there’s more to do.”

Focused on the millions of British Columbians who had a difficult year, Premier Horgan and the government delivered the tax-free BC Recovery Benefit, available to 90% of adults in B.C., providing up to $1,000 for families or $500 for individuals.

The BC Recovery Benefit builds on actions taken after COVID-19 first hit British Columbia, providing immediate relief for people who needed it most, including: • helping more than 600,000 workers with a $1,000 emergency benefit to help cover lost wages; and • providing peace of mind to over 86,000 renters with a relief supplement and protection from the threat of eviction.

The Province provided important relief for businesses, establishing a $300-million grant program for small- and medium-sized businesses that were hit hard during the pandemic, providing tax breaks for businesses purchasing equipment and offering a rebate for companies hiring back workers or creating new jobs.

These measures build on work done in the early days of the pandemic, including: • helping thousands of small businesses with their BC Hydro bills; • allowing deferred payments on several business taxes such as the provincial sales tax (PST), employer health tax and carbon tax; and • working with businesses to help them operate while keeping workers and customers safe.

Premier Horgan and the government consulted widely with people and businesses, hearing from more than 50,000 British Columbians before delivering the StrongerBC recovery plan, focused on:

Top Baby Names In British Columbia For 2020 The race for the top baby name in British Columbia in 2020 has come to a close, and Olivia once again has taken the lead for the most popular name for babies born this year.

Olivia is followed by Liam, Oliver, Noah, Lucas, Emma, Theodore, Benjamin, Ethan and Charlotte, according to the Vital Statistics Agency’s preliminary figures from Jan. 1 to Dec. 17, 2020.

In 2019, Olivia was the top choice for babies born in B.C., followed by Oliver, Liam, Lucas, Ethan, Noah, William, Benjamin, Charlotte

and Theodore. For eight of the past nine years, Olivia has been among the favourite names for babies born in British Columbia.

Only names that occur five or more times are listed.

From Jan. 1 to Dec. 17, 2020, 39,322 babies were born in B.C. In 2019, 43,703 babies were born in B.C.

Home Owner Grant Threshold Set For 2021 Tax Year VICTORIA - The 2021 Home Owner Grant threshold is set at $1.625 million, ensuring the same percentage of British Columbia homeowners continue to be eligible.

New in 2021, the Province is taking over full administration of the grant program to ease the burden on municipalities. The Province already administers the grant for rural homeowners. Homeowners in all municipalities will now submit their applications directly to the Province instead of through their municipal office. Similar to previous years, applications will open in May when a majority of property tax notices are received.

As in previous years, homeowners are reminded to keep their property assessment notice from BC Assessment or property tax notice from their municipality. They will need their roll and jurisdiction number from their notice to apply for the Home Owner Grant with the Province.

The grant is reduced by $5 for every $1,000 of assessed value above the threshold. Some low-income seniors, veterans and people with disabilities can also apply for a supplement that replaces any grant amount they lose due to the value of their home being over the threshold.

The grant amounts for 2021 for homeowners in

Metro Vancouver, the Fraser Valley Regional District and Capital Regional District are: • up to $570 for the basic Home Owner Grant; and • up to $845 for homeowners who are 65 years or older, or the homeowner is a person with a disability or lives with a relative who has a disability.

The grant amounts for 2021 for homeowners located in a northern or rural area (outside Metro Vancouver, the Fraser Valley Regional District and the Capital Regional District) are: • up to $770; and • up to $1,045 for homes in northern or rural areas where the homeowner is 65 property-taxes/annual-property-tax/home-ownyears or older, or the homeowner is a person er-grant with a disability.

Actions To Protect Seniors, Improve Health Care Helped B.C. Fight Global Pandemic The Province took unprecedented action to protect seniors and deliver better, faster care in 2020 to keep people safe, healthy and secure.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic first hit British Columbia, the government has followed the advice of public health officials and taken the strong action needed to slow the spread of the virus and protect those most vulnerable by: • protecting seniors in long-term care with a single-site directive that limited workers to one facility and raised wages for thousands of workers; • hiring 7,000 new health-care workers in longterm care homes and 1,200 contact tracers to help stop further spread in the community; • beginning an immunization strategy to protect vulnerable seniors, starting with front-line workers who care for those most at risk; and • helping rural, remote and Indigenous communities access better care with expanded flight and ambulance options, virtual access to medical professionals, culturally safe care and contact tracing.
