Merry Christmas!

This is the last Sam’ Garden for the year. I will now be focusing on the last of my Christmas lights, wrapping a few gifts and making my Christmas Crackers. Then I intend on curling up on the couch to watch my favourite Christmas movies. Many of us grew up watching Miracle on 34th street, Elvis’s Christmas movie Blue Hawaii, It’s A Wonderful Life, and even Home Alone to mention a few. My personal favourite is A Christmas Carol and although I’m not really big on black and white movies the only rendition of this movie in my book is the 1951 production with Alistair Sims. I am amazed every time I see it that how without special affects this movie is so well produced, acted, the cinematography is bar none and the story is amazing. It evokes laughter and tears and it is traditional in my family to watch it every Christmas Eve. Although

many traditions will be forsaken this year it still will be a special Christmas with love abounding and memories made. It may seem more like How The Grinch Stole Christmas this year but the light is on at the end of the tunnel for this awful virus and with love, care and understanding we will survive. We have learned new parameters in our lives and we all deserve a pat on the back.

I am hopeful that we will get enough snow for a White Christmas but not enough to have to fire up the snowblower.

It looks like Christmas won’t be like our usual celebrations this month, well no big surprise; it has been an unusual year. We all had to conform in some way to a “new normal” and senior services have looked different for many months but we always make the very best of it. When we could not visit together, the local seniors played Virtual Bingo, enjoyed Room Service Activi-

ty Programs and got creative making DIY crafts with provided supplies. Many of Lumby’s local retirees were treated with surprise ice cream trucks days, pop-up lemonade stands and ‘just because’ gift bags. Delicious hot meals and grocery shopping is always available weekly for front door drop off. Yes, we may have been physically apart but as a Village, we really came together.

Last 2 corners, gave tips on different methods on how to pace yourself, over the Christmas season food and drink wise. But there is one more element that will help you get through it all, and that is exercise! Exercise is obviously beneficial anytime, but especially when the caloric intake is higher than usual. Also, COVID has made many people sedentary with working from home, which can lead to depression. Exercise will help keep off those extra calories and induce, “feel good” chemicals as dopamine and serotonin. There are many ways to exercise, just get up every once in awhile and do something, even if a few minutes several times throughout your day. 30 minutes a day of exercise, can make significant changes in Blood Pressure, Cholesterol and Heart Rate...along with a variety of other benefits. Start simple by doing a few easy, but effective exercises: Desk push-ups, marching on the spot, chair squats or simply going for a walk. Make sure, only to do what you are comfortable with. Allow yourself to work into the exercises, so as not to hurt yourself. This may mean only a few desk push-ups or chair squats or 15 minutes of walking…. take it gradual.

If you want to add a bit more intensity, do the following with specific reps and sets: 10 reps x 3 sets once or twice a day. These simple exercises can help you burn 200 – 500 calories depending on intensity and how many sets performed. Or alternate days with 30minutes of walking.

Christmas Spices

Donna Easto, H.C., C.H., M.H. Certified Herbal Educator This year especially, we all need a little spice in our Christmas. Take, for example, the spices found in traditional spice mixes such as Mixed Spice and Pumpkin Pie Spice: Allspice, Cinnamon, Cloves, Nutmeg and Ginger.

Allspice (Jamaican Pepper Plant) So named because it smells of cloves, nutmeg and cinnamon, is found in Christmas puddings, cakes, cookies, mulled wine, and mincemeat. After grinding, Allspice can quickly lose its zip. To make the best of its pungent flavour, buy the berries and grind as needed. Allspice aids in digestion, and research has shown certain beneficial antibacterial and antifungal effects, particularly on stomach bacteria (E. coli and Listeria monocytogenes).

Cinnamon Sweet, warm and stimulating, it’s one of the world’s most important medicinal spices. Cassia, coarser, more intense and less fragrant than sweet cinnamon is what you’ll most likely find in mega marts. The rarer and more expensive Sweet or Ceylon cinnamon, grown in Sri Lanka, is preferred for sweet and delicately flavoured recipes. A study recently showed that participants chewing cinnamon flavoured gum showed improved attention, working memory, virtual recognition memory, and motor speed. Cinnamon

is powerful when used in treating digestive issues such as indigestion, gas and cramping. It’s excellent for children with diarrhea; it not only tastes good, it gently improves intestinal tone to avoid dehydration.

Cloves Included in many classic spice mixtures, including Chinese five-spice powder, you’ll find cloves in curry powder, pickling spices, mulled wine, cookie and gingerbread recipes worldwide. If baked ham is your goto for new year’s day, chances it’s studded with whole cloves. Try integrating a few servings of whole or ground cloves into your meals. They’ll bring a warm, distinctive flavour to desserts, curries, and chutneys.

You can also simmer whole cloves in boiling water for 5–10 minutes to make a soothing cup of clove tea. Medicinally, the antiseptic properties of clove oil make it a common ingredient in toothpaste, mouthwash and gargles. The active ingredient in clove oil, eugenol, is a natural anesthetic. Commonly used to numb and reduce the pain of a toothache, it also has an anti-inflammatory action that may reduce swelling and irritation to the area.

Nutmeg Aromatic, sweet and warm, nutmeg and its sister spice mace appears in classic cuisines across the world. It was once considered a mark of wealth to wear whole nutmegs on a necklace and grind it with a little silver or ivory grater at fashionable formal events. It’s at its sweetest when fresh-grated. Mace is the brilliant red arils revealed when the fruit of the nutmeg splits upon ripening. The mace is removed from the nut and dried. You’ll find mace in recipes for savoury and milk-based sauces, such as bechamel and delicate seafood-based soups. Try adding a smidge to milk-based puddings, cheesecakes and lemon curd for an exciting hint of the tropics. Sweeter than mace, nutmeg is delicious with pasta dishes featuring cheese and spinach. Try a dash in creamy mashed potatoes!

At Christmas, nutmeg is everywhere - in cakes, gingerbreads, cookies and puddings. Apple and cherry pie come alive with the addition of a little nutmeg to the filling. Nutmeg improves digestion, helps make sleep come more quickly and is anti-inflammatory.

If you’re in love with nutmeg, it could be because it’s an aphrodisiac as well as a stimulant - probably why you’ll find nutmeg listed as an ingredient on some perfumes and ointment! *There is some discussion online about the safety of nutmeg in pregnancy. To be sure, avoid nutmeg, especially in large amounts during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Ginger In powdered form, it’s used in holiday recipes, from cakes to cookies to meats. Highly prized as a medicine during the Middle Ages, ginger root was considered a gift from the Garden of Eden. An excellent remedy for digestive complaints caused by over-eating, it’s the perfect spice to have on hand at Christmas. It helps move food through the digestive tract and reduces irritation. This is a column meant for fun and some information About myself: I am a Freelance Photographer you often see me on the side of the road or in various places taking photos of different things animals, birds, places, people etc. l have lived in Lumby just over 8 years,you have seen my photos in the newspaper (Lumby Valley Times) and once in awhile in the Vernon Morning Star, and the Lumby Art Gallery. Photography is my passion. Disclaimer: The information on some of my photos that I write about a lot of times come from the Internet or books I research them, hopefully the facts are as close to the truth as I can come.

Let's Play When I was a kid, every Sunday at our house was game day. This is where we all sat down after dinner and either played different card games including poker or board games. This was a great family time together.

52 cards in one deck.

It is thought that there are 52 cards for 52 weeks in a year, thirteen cards per suit to represent the thirteen lunar cycles per year, and four suits (Hearts, Spades, Clubs, and Diamonds) for the four seasons in a year.

Decks of cards were thought to come out during the Tang Dynasty 14th century, although there is no actual proof of this.

When Tarot cards first arrived on the scene in Europe in the 15th century the decks were usually sold to wealthy Italian families, they were just regular card game, it wasn't until much later that were associated with the Occult in the 18th century.

Throughout the centuries, card games of many different types have been evolved. It is estimated that

they are about 1,000 - 10,000 card games played around the world.

Here is a list of some of the card games out there that most of us have heard of and or played: Gin Rummy, Hearts, Poker (Blackjack, Texas Hold 'Em, etc.) Solitaire, Crib, War, Go Fish, Crazy Eights, Old Maid, Spit, one of my favorites that I learned about 6 years ago is Hand and Foot, which is similar to Canasta. This is just a few of thousands of card games out there.

Have you been getting bored, or depressed lately because of having to stay home most of the time? Pull out your deck of cards, sit down with the people in your house, and play some good old fashion fun and play cards. Don't know any games? Check them out on the internet, there are tons of them out there to play.

Maybe you live by yourself, there are a lot of different solitaire games out there that you can play. If you don't like the ones out there, make up your own, and when you get to visit your friends again, or they visit

you, you can show them how to play your new game.

Maybe you don't like to play games or cards, then you could watch a good movie, go for a walk, make a cup of tea, have a warm bath, put up decorations, etc.

However, you choose to live your life, make it fun for you and everyone around you. If you enjoy it and it doesn't harm you or anyone then do it. This is a good way of providing yourself with good mental health which is what everyone needs especially at this time of year.

Figurative Art

An exhibition by Nina Westaway Human faces! Right now we need to see the Human Face. Artist Nina Westaway has looked at many approaches to painting the human face and has developed a uniquely expressive and somewhat abstract style.

Some of her faces mingle animal and human qualities exploring anthropomorphic symbolism. Others explore human social issues of adolescence, ceremony and marriage. Science fiction also has its place in this collection!

Nina’s studio is full of her paintings and those she has collected. Her reading and research is extensive and she is making her store of knowledge available to the community through the Village Gallery in January. The Monashee Arts Council is sponsoring its portunity to see Nina’s extensive body of work and first “artist in residence” month. This is a great op- also register for one on one coaching on a number of

topics. These free coaching sessions will be available either in person starting Saturday January 9th or over the phone starting January 4th.

Topics range from doodling string figures , expressive portraiture and mono-prints to practical information on how to put a wire on a canvas. Each presentation will be hand tailored to your specific questions beginning with a phone interview (if you wish) where Nina will explore your particular interest in a topic.

Nina will offer in person sessions at the Village Gallery on four Saturdays during January. Covid 19 health requirements will be respected. The Village Gallery is open from 10 to 3 Monday to Saturday and if you want to book a session or consult about your painting interest Nina Westaway can be reached at 250-547-2488.

Fire Safety For The Holiday Season

Signs of the holiday season are everywhere, as lights are strung on people's homes and decorated trees stand in front windows.

But hidden underneath the sparkle is the fire risk that can accompany seasonal trimmings and celebrations.

The Office of the Fire Commissioner (OFC) asks everyone to be fire safe in their homes this year. As reported to the OFC, there have been 113 Christmas-related fires in the past decade in British Columbia. This has led to 15 injuries, four deaths and more than $14.5 million in damage.

"The majority of fires over the holiday season are a result of decorative lights being left on, being improperly used or being faulty," said Jennifer Rice, Parliamentary Secretary for Emergency Preparedness. "The OFC has also had reports of wreaths and boughs catching fire due to candles or improperly used lights.

In one instance, a fire was caused by a person trying to burn their Christmas tree indoors, resulting in a chimney fire. I urge everyone to keep fire safety top of mind and consider how they can make the holiday season safer in their own homes."

Here are some tips from the OFC to reduce your own fire risk and keep your loved ones safe.

Decorating • Keep trees, wrapping paper, decorations and other things that can catch fire away from heat sources.

• Ensure a real tree stays fresh and green by watering it daily. Get rid of the tree after the holidays or when it has dried out. Many communities run Christmas tree recycle programs.

• Choose flame-retardant or non-combustible decorations and only use lights that have been tested and labelled by a certified testing laboratory. Consider energy-efficient LED lighting, which produces less heat and poses less of a fire risk.

• Turn off all light strings and decorations before leaving home or going to bed.

• Ensure electrical outlets are not overloaded.

Cooking safety • Have a "kid-free zone" of at least one metre around the stove and areas where hot food or drink is prepared or carried.

• Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling or broiling food. If you leave the kitchen for even a short period of time, turn off the stove.

• If you are simmering, baking, roasting or boiling food, check it regularly. Remain in the home while food is cooking and use a timer to remind you that you are cooking.

• Never pour water on a grease fire. On the stove top, smother the flames by sliding a lid over the pan and turning off the burner. Leave the pan covered until it is completely cooled.

• For an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed. After a fire, the oven should be checked and/or serviced before being used again.

Candle safety • Extinguish lit candles when you leave the room or go to bed.

• Use candle holders that are sturdy and will not tip over easily, and put candle holders on a sturdy, uncluttered surface. Battery-operated candles are an excellent alternative.

• Keep children and pets away from lit candles.

• Smoke alarms and fire escape planning • Ensure working smoke alarms are installed on every level of the home and outside each sleeping area.

• Test and clean smoke alarms regularly and change Over the past weekend, Lumby Museum volunteers raised over $1600.00 in cash and gift cards plus a fire truck full of toys that will be distributed by the OAP to children in the Lumby Area.

With the winter season fast approaching the Village of Lumby is asking residents to do their part in helping make the snow removal process more efficient.

Snow removal on all priority routes will be started by 5:30 a.m., depending on snowfall rates, and normally all roads and sidewalks will be completed within 8 hours. Businesses and residents can assist the Village of Lumby snow removal and sanding operations by cooperating with the following: 1. DO NOT shovel, plow or blow snow from driveways onto the streets.

This snow should be shoveled to the left of the driveway (when looking at the house from the street) to reduce the amount of the snow deposited across the driveway when snow removal is in progress. This potentially creates a dangerous situation for motorists. By placing the snow back onto the roadway after a plow truck has gone by creates issues for our snow removal crews. The plow will need to make an additional run down your street to clean it up which increases the Villages costs with additional staff time, fuel and equipment wear and tear, not to mention delays in getting to other areas of the village that also need to be plowed.

2. Remove all uninsured vehicles, boats, etc. from the streets and alleyways.

3. Park your vehicles in your driveway as opposed to the street when snow removal is in progress. Failure to do so can result in removal of the vehicle at the owner’s expense.

4. The Village does not clear snow windrows from private driveways.
