• People who learn English as a second language are superheroes, could you imagine looking at the word “yacht” and not just giving up.

Who Is A Christmas Tree’s Favourite Singer? ...Spruce Springsteen!!!

Oh Christmas Tree

Thanks to this mild start to our winter I have been able to get a lot of yard work done that I did not see getting accomplished this year and I am thrilled! I now working on the Christmas lights, presents and have just finished my Christmas Tree. My husband and I went to the hills of Coldstream to cut our tree and are again thrilled with our beautiful tree. A cultured tree, freshly cut, well shaken and thanks to their wonderful crew who safely stowed it in our truck. There are about 350 million Christmas trees growing on tree farms in the U S of A of which 25 to 30 million are sold annually and another 10 to 12 million are exported only second in number to Denmark. About 2 percent of trees are cut from the bush and unknown numbers are artificial trees. The use of Christmas trees or more originally the evergreen boughs were used around the time of Solstice in many cultures. Ancient peoples hung evergreen boughs over their doors and windows to keep away witches, ghosts, evil spirits and illness. Long before Christianity and the birth of Christ. Egyptians used them as a symbol of life over death. For the Romans it symbolized the rebirth off farms and orchards and decorated their homes and temples with evergreen boughs. The Druid (priests of the Celts) used them decoratively at solstice as a sign of everlasting life. The Vikings used them at solstice to honour their Sun God, Balder. While other early Europeans celebrated light and birth during the darkest day of winter. The first tree actually brought into a home and decorated is recorded in Latvia in 1510. In Germany in the 16 century they were widely used in the Christian homes to decorate for the Christmas season and when they immigrated to North America the the 1700’s they brought the tradition with them but they were considered pagan and the practice was shunned by other settlers even suggesting laws and fines for those who used them. In 1848 Queen Victoria a much beloved Queen in Britain put up and decorated a tree for her children. When a sketch of this was made it soon became a trend both in England and parts of Europe but it also spread in favour in east coast of America and

Canada and soon was tradition. Early decorations were made of apples, nuts, marzipan cookies and other sweets, popcorn dyed in bright colours and strung with berries and nuts, pretzels were popular and soon German craftsmen were making beautiful glass ornaments. Tinsel, made from thin strips of beaten silver were also used and with that came the myth about the Christmas Spider. A family too poor to decorate their tree for Christmas had all gone to bed but when the awoke the next morning the tree spider had covered their tree in spider webs and on Christmas morning these webs turned to silver and gold and this was done by St. Nicholas or Father Christmas aka Santa Clause. The first lighting of the Christmas Tree was believed to be done by Martin Luther a Protestant preacher who when walking home one night was awed by the stars over evergreen trees in the distance. This led to many disasters including in 1885 the burning down of a Chicago hospital. In 1917 an enterprising young teenager using the now wider spread electric light capability started the now infamous Noma Electric company and became another tradition.

Your Christmas tree should be placed where it can be seen from outside, where it can be seen while dining or relaxing with family. Keep it away from heat sources like radiators and base board and stoves when possible. Be sure it have been given a good shaking to dislodge dead needles and unwanted pest that can arrive on your tree like spiders, mites, and ticks.

When you get it home another small amount should be cut from the bottom and if not put into the house on its stand place the end in a bucket of water till your ready. This is a crucial step that will keep your tree fresh and supple for weeks. Many people use corn syrup, aspirin, preservatives, 7-up, as an additive to the water they provide but the most important thing for the tree’s long life is for it not to run out of water.

A little bleach in the water too will make the water more acidic and that will help the tree with absorption. 1 gallon of water with a can of 7-up or a half cup corn syrup with 4 tsp of bleach works well.

Life is filled with moments and opportunity. The importance of giving back is something that grows on you, maybe even more so, as we age. With the holidays fast approaching, keep in mind that there are great numbers of seniors who live alone. Especially this year, Christmas can look very quiet and lonely.

• Have your children draw pictures and write letters to be mailed out.

• Make homemade treats, maybe family traditional recipes and drop them off on the door step of a pensioner.

• Organize caroling outside of a senior residence (of course, making sure the small choir is all in the same bubble).

The Vernon North Okanagan RCMP are offering some helpful ways you can send the Grinch home empty handed this Holiday season.

With the Holiday shopping season in full swing, and with Covid-19 measures in place, more and more consumers are turning to online shopping this season. While this can be a convenient way to cross items off your holiday shopping list, the abundance of packages delivered to doorsteps can be a tempting target for the Grinch who may be doing a little Holiday shopping of his own in your neighbourhood.

Here are a few steps you can take to protect your goodies: • Arrange for a delivery time when you are home; • Install video cameras to deter thieves; • Utilize shipment tracking to receive updates as your items travel to their destination; • Request a delivery notification. Once delivered, retrieve the item as soon as possible. The less

time it is sitting unattended, the lower the risk of it being stolen; • Can’t be at home? Have someone retrieve it for you; • Have your package delivered to a post office of other pickup location; • Add delivery instructions to leave items off the front step and out of sight at a rear or side door; • If your package is stolen, file a report with the courier and notify police right away.

This is a column meant for fun and some information About myself: I am a Freelance Photographer you often see me on the side of the road or in various places taking photos of different things animals, birds, places, people etc. l have lived in Lumby just over 8 years,you have seen my photos in the newspaper (Lumby Valley Times) and once in awhile in the Vernon Morning Star, and the Lumby Art Gallery. Photography is my passion. Disclaimer: The information on some of my photos that I write about a lot of times come from the Internet or books I research them, hopefully the facts are as close to the truth as I can come.

Winter Wonderland I know people are tired of the COVID -19. Everyone is struggling to get through this, but we will.

Even through all of this there are still beautiful things to see. We went for a drive the other day, and look how pretty the road looked. The trees were glistening with the Hoarfrost on them, with just a skiff of snow on the road. How pretty I thought this was.

While we were out, I saw how many people had already put out their Christmas decorations, some of the houses that we saw had never had them up before, maybe it was new owners this year, or maybe everyone is just trying to feel better. However, it is, I must say that it all looks beautiful!

It amazes me that right now even though people are feeling low with this COVD -19 how generous people still are.

My neighbor surprised me by placing a beautiful homemade swag on my door while I was out. When I came home and saw it hanging on my door, I was very surprised and happy about this. She and her daughter and daughter-in-law had made about 15 of them up in one day, and brought them to others people house's.

What a way to spread joy! Thank you, neighbor you made my day.

Christmas Tree Chipping The Village of Lumby The municipality will be chipping discarded Christmas trees after the holiday season.

Trees will be accepted across from the curling rink from December 26th, 2020 until January 8th, 2021.

Giving at this time of year is what most of us do naturally. Even the smallest thing can make us feel good. It can create new memories, things we will remember down the road.

If you are buying something for someone, I know it's quick and easy to shop online, but remember there are a lot of places here in Lumby, Cherryville, Lavington, and Coldstream that could use your business. For those hard to buy for people, most of the shops and restaurants around here also have gift certificates.

Don't want to buy anything, make it. Homemade gifts are always good.

While you are out, don't forget about those in need, the Food Bank always needs donations especially at this time of year. There is also the Lumby Christmas Teens to donate to. Don't forget about the Salvation Army when you see the people ringing the bells every

little bit helps. There are so many people in need, and this year we are seeing even more people that need help.

Let's do the best we can to help people this year, whether it is in food, clothing, money, gifts, or just a little bit of Joy. Let's keep this a beautiful Winter Wonderland.

You saw these lovely ladies this year at the Lumby Public Market in the Oval this past summer. They had fresh fruit, vegetables, pies (that melted in your mouth) homemade soups (yum yum) etc.

Tanya and Britt shop locally to make their great tasting food for you. Buying their Meat, Teas, Coffees, Cheese, Bread etc. from local places. They buy their homemade Hot Sauce from Joy's Mexican Food.

Did you know that Tanya and Britt even make their own sauerkraut? They put this on their great tasting Ruben Sandwiches, or anything else you would like to have it with.

I tried some of their Chili the other day, wow this was great, waking up my taste buds!

Are you Vegan, Vegetarian, need Gluten Free, no problem. These two wonderful ladies will make this up for you.

Catering to most of you needs and wants, what better place to go. Kilie Routlay owner of Back to Earth provide the supplies to the Blue Nose Mountain Deli, like hand sanitizer and soap.

B.C. launches Land Owner Transparency Registry Registered owners of real estate in B.C. must now register and provide information about their interest holders with the Land Owner Transparency Registry, to help expose and stop illegal funds in B.C.’s housing market.

“British Columbians expect that when they buy a home, they are entering a housing market based on fairness. But for decades, that didn’t happen when they were in competition with fraudsters flush with illicit cash,” said Selina Robinson, Minister of Finance.

“This first-of-its-kind registry will help return transparency and moderation to housing markets throughout B.C.” The registry is the first in the world to require land ownership disclosure of all land types and applies to land owned by corporations, partners and trustees (unless specifically excluded by the legislation). In its report, the Expert Panel on Real Estate said the disclosure of beneficial ownership is the “single most important measure” that can be taken to address money laundering.

As of Nov. 30, when corporations, trustees or partners purchase land in B.C., they will be required to disclose the interest holders of that land. Within a year (Nov. 30, 2021), all reporting bodies that are corporations, trustees or partners – and that have an interest in land as of Nov. 30, 2020 – will be required to disclose their interest holders as well. Going forward, the B.C. government will review the effectiveness of the registry and if required, will make improvements.

The information provided will help improve transparency in B.C.’s housing market. It may also be used by tax and law authorities to investigate and crack down on illegal activity. This will help prevent money laundering and bolster confidence in the housing sector.

“B.C. is taking the necessary steps to prevent money laundering, including our panel’s key recommendation to implement a publicly assessible Land Owner Transparency Registry,” said Maureen Maloney, chair, Expert Panel on Combatting Money Laundering in Real Estate. “These measures mean that B.C.

homebuyers and investors can continue to trust the housing sector, which is an important pillar towards a stable economy.”

The Land Owner Transparency Registry is a critical measure in Homes For B.C.: A 30-Point Plan for Housing Affordability in British Columbia and is designed to crack down on tax fraud and close loopholes.

The 30-point plan also includes the Condo and Strata Assignment Integrity Register, strengthening audit and enforcement powers and working with the federal government.

The panel’s report estimated that $7.4 billion was laundered through B.C. in 2018, $5 billion of which is estimated to have been laundered through real estate.

It’s readily available in capsules, standardized extract and tea. Recipe: Turmeric Tea: simmer 1 tsp turmeric powder in 2 cups water for 10 minutes, stir until fully dissolved. Turn heat to low and add 2 cups dairy, soy or almond milk, 1 tbsp pure almond extract, and honey or maple syrup to taste. Remove from heat. Enjoy warm or cold.

White Willow Bark European settlers looking for help with headaches, joint and muscle pains, and reducing fever turned to a herb used widely by indigenous groups. Modern herbal medicine still recommends it for back, osteoarthritis, and rheumatism pain, sprains, tooth-ache, headache, fever, colds and seasonal flu. Generally, Willow Bark is taken as a tea or in a standardized extract. Recipe: Willow Bark Liniment: Put 2 ounces of ground white willow bark into a large jar with a tight-fitting lid. Cover with 16 ounces of apple cider vinegar stir gently. Secure the lid and let the mixture sit for 14 days. Strain through cheesecloth and put strained liquid into a dark bottle. Apply topically 2 to 3 times per day for sunburn pain, muscle ache and joint paint. Willow bark is usually well-tolerated but is contraindicated for pregnant or breastfeeding women. If sensitive to aspirin or other salicylate drugs, avoid white willow. Aspirin was developed from the willow, and like Aspirin, it does affect blood clotting, though in a much-reduced way than the commercial product.
