Jessie Blades from The Beauty and The Barber here in Lumby really showed her care for the community and clients.

When asked about why she was cutting a client's hair while he was in his car she told us the following story.

I started cutting Glen's hair after opening the barbershop here in Lumby.

In the beginning, he would walk down to the shop, over time I started going to his house but since being moved to a home, I haven't been able to see him in quite awhile..

Glen's wife, Rose, came to me a few days before and asked if I would be able to give him a trim.

Unfortunately since being in the home, he is unable to walk by himself, so this would mean having to carry him into the shop.

It was an easy decision, when Rose and her friend pulled up outside with Glen in the passenger seat.

Simply go to him.

Although it was rather cramped in the car, we had some pretty good laughs together.

Being able to see Glen and laugh with him again meant so much to me.

I wasn't expecting for this to go as far as it has but honestly I am grateful for it all.

Right now especially, I want the world to see kindness, I want for people to remember that even a small gesture can really mean so much, to so many.

Seeing that gleam in Glen's eyes, reminded me why I do, what I do.

Great Job Jessie!!!

Shop Local with the Christmas Store 2020 has been a year of disruption, but people are still determined to enjoy the seasonal pleasure. One of these pleasures is gift shopping. The people of our community want to be able to continue to support the local crafters and artisans, and we have tried our best to make that possible by gathering over 20 different artist and crafters to showcase samples of their work.

Please come and see the talent of our local community and support our local artisans, all while still maintaining a health conscious environment in this time of social distancing.

Many of our artist and crafters are also open to commission so if you see a work you like, but are hoping for something unique and one of a kind this is the time to get it done!

The Christmas store is located at the Village Gallery at 1975 Vernon Street (hwy 6) and will run November 2nd to December 24th, Monday to Saturday from 10am to 4pm.

kill it. The Poinsettia is native to Mexico and Central America and can grow to a stunning 3 meters tall.

The Aztecs considered it a symbol of purity and it was brought back to the US of A in 1825 by a diplomat from Mexico. It at one time lost all its leaves after developing its flowers but now the varieties we know keep their leaves and can come in an amazing array of colours. 65 million Poinsettias are sold every year in the US alone. Obviously I am not the only one who can’t keep them alive for the following year. Poinsettia need a minimum of 6 hrs of indirect sun a day and to encourage new flowering they must be put in the dark for 14 hours a day. During this time they must be watered and fertilized. Watch that you don’t over water them as many fungal problems can develop if they have wet feet. This process must be continued for 8 weeks to succeed so if your hoping for blooms at Christmas, well, do the math. If you are going to buy another Poinsettia for the season and wish to try and get it to survive until the following season be sure to trim it back in April leaving 2 to 3 sleeves per stem to prevent it from growing leggy. The white latex type sap is slightly poisonous to cats, dogs and humans causing cramps, nausea and vomiting, however a great amount of the plant would have to be consumed to cause any significant problem.

Another plant that is often grown for the upcoming Christmas season is the Amaryllis, but any plant with an incredible bloom like this plant would be a welcome sight anytime during our long winter. Originally from Africa they are easy to grow and come in a huge variety of colours and scents. The bulb should

to 6 large blooms without tipping. Soak the bulb in warm water for about 2 hours then plant it with about half the bulb exposed. Place in a sunny location as the greater the sunlight the larger the bloom. Water with warm water and fertilize weekly. Two stems should develop and both will develop flowers over a period of time. The Amaryllis will bloom once a year and once finished should be cut down to 2 inches of height then lifted from the dirt cleaned, air dried and place in a paper bag to be stored in a cool place.

The following year it can be replanted again and have another beautiful display 6 to 8 weeks later.

The Importance of Making Memories During Pandemic Life

We’re told having a routine is healthy—it can give structure to your day, prevent procrastination, offer a sense of purpose—but as the most played-out saying in the wellness world goes, it’s all about moderation.

Turns out, during these days of social isolation, when it can feel like you're living the same day over and over again, resisting the script can help you create better memories. And these memories not only offer vital health benefits, but also may be your only hope for looking back fondly at 2020.

Studies show many Canadian senior citizens are feeling anxious, lonely, and depressed during the pandemic. For those not directly affected by the virus, restrictions on daily life and the inability to create special moments can be to blame. There’s a strong link between missing memories and diminished emotional well-being, says Morgan Barense, Ph.D, professor in the field of Perception, Cognition and Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Toronto and Canada Research Chair.

“Feeling like you haven't done anything or not remembering what happened is really disorienting and stressful,” she says.

Memories comprise our identity—who we are is closely tied to what we have done. An unsettling feeling can arise when we don't have new memories—or can't remember what we've been doing.

The reason it's hard to recall what you've been up to in the past few months is that we don’t have many sensory experiences in our day-to-day lives anymore, says Richard Amaral, a psychologist in Markham, Ontario. To create more memories, you need situations that trigger the senses.

“An emotionally-charged event will stimulate areas of the brain responsible for smell, hearing, taste, sight, which makes the event stick with you,” says Amaral.

In addition, an event that surprises you or one in which you learn something about yourself is also likely to earn a spot in the memory bank.

So, here’s the task: Add sensory experiences to your daily life—even to monotonous tasks, when you're barely leaving the house — to make moments distinctive and more pleasant, says Barense.

Instead of eating breakfast at your kitchen table, take your yogurt parfait to the park. Instead of just another weekend routine of television binges, have a choose-your-own-adventure day where you get to pick from a list of activities to do and foods to eat.

The goal is to elevate the peaks (good memories) and smooth out the pits (bad memories), said Chip Heath, author of The Power of Moments. Even if you find the pandemic to be boring the majority of the time, it can be remembered in a positive light by injecting a few enjoyable sensory experiences into it.

Think about the typical experience at a place like Disney World, Heath says. The average wait time for a ride can be 60 minutes, and the average ride time is about two minutes. The wait time, which is comprised of not more than taking slow steps, walking

through winding pathways, and dealing with tired kids, is dull but not awful enough to be a “pit,” while the ride, full of surprises, is a “peak.” A peak outweighs long expanses of monotony in the memory bank.

This form of unconscious selective memory can be healthy. “Positive reminiscence is linked to all sorts of good outcomes in terms of emotional well-being,” says Barense. “Depression is linked to distortions in one's memory—focusing on the negative aspects as opposed to the positive ones,” she says. “If you focus more on the positive elements of the experience, you tend to be more positive overall.”

Not only will your mood benefit from positive reminiscence, but your brain will too. Studies suggest seniors who do a variety of activities tend to have better memory function. “The more events you have to remember,” says Barense, “the more remembering you'll do, and the better your memory will be.”

To reinforce your memories, consider recording them. Amaral suggests journaling, making note of any out-of-the-ordinary experiences that can be reviewed when you're feeling down. Heath suggests getting into the routine, on each birthday, of summarizing one major lesson you learned that year and want to remember. After all, having a routine is good–in moderation.

Temporary Shutdown of Duteau Creek UV Facility for Repairs THIS IS NOT A BOIL WATER NOTICE

Times are stressful. Before we worry you, the key takeaway from this media release is that your water is treated with chlorine, which is an effective disinfection treatment against viruses like COVID-19.

In the fall of last year, a leak was discovered in the pipe that carries water from the Duteau Creek Ultraviolet (UV) Disinfection facility to customers. A temporary fix in the fall of 2019 allowed for the treatment plant to continue running. This spring, the plan to repair the leak was postponed due to snow and waiting for a mechanical part; therefore, the permanent fix was postponed until irrigation season was completed. Greater Vernon Water will now be working on a permanent fix.

This means the UV portion of water treatment will be temporarily turned-off to allow for repairs. While water will not be treated with UV, the water will still be treated with the clarification process (Diffused Air Floatation or DAF) and chlorine by the Duteau Creek Water Treatment Plant. This is the same treatment process that was in place for years until the UV Facility was turned on in February 2019.

Out of an abundance of caution, and to notify customers of the change in treatment, the Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) is sharing this water quality notification.

The water is still treated and is safe,” said Tricia Brett, Water Quality Manager, RDNO. This work is continuing from a previous leak.

Work will follow all Provincial recommendations and the WorkSafeBC protocol for safe COVID-19 construction operations. Work is set to begin the morning of November 16, 2020, and further public updates will be provided.

Who will be effected?

All customers on the GVW water system are currently on the Duteau Creek Water Source. The Kalamalka Lake source was turned off on October 24, 2020 due to increased algae counts.

Do I have to boil my water?

Out of an abundance of caution, anyone wishing additional protection, including infants, and those with a compromised immune system may wish to boil water for drinking, washing fruits & vegetables, making beverages or ice, or when brushing teeth.

Living Thru the Wind Driving through Ontario a few years ago, a lot of farms would have a few of these giant looking fans with huge blades on their land. I have seen some of them right here in BC, but not half as many as in other places.

Wind Turbines were created for the use of saving energy in the home. The very first Wind Turbine was built in Vermont in the early 1940s.

Wind energy is very expensive to install, about $50,000 or more while installing solar energy may only cost about $30,000.

Wind Turbines not only cost a few bucks to install but due to the wind speed they might not work properly, and they may not be suitable for all areas.

Wind Turbines use the wind to move the blades that look like propellers around a rotor. The rotor being connected to the main shaft working like a generator creating electricity.

Most Wind Turbines will have 3 blades, these blades can have speeds that can reach about 320 kph (200 mph) One of the largest Wind Turbines in the world is in Hawaii, this Turbine is 20 stories tall, and the blades are the length of a football field. Wow that is huge!

Using wind turbines or solar panels can save you a lot of money every year on your electricity.

Wind energy is a great way to go, but if I could choose either one, for me it would be solar energy instead. Here are my reasons why: Although wind energy is great here is what the Wind Turbines can do to the environment, they can disturb the echo abilities of bats, the bats fly into the

turbines and die. It is estimated that about 600,00 or

even a higher number of bats die every year. Bats are a very important part of our environment. Some environmental advocates are now asking that wherever there is a large bat population that Wind Turbines not be able to be built there.

Wind Turbines are also killing off a lot of predatory and other birds. It is estimated that about 1,300 or more Eagles, Hawks, Falcons, etc. are killed every year by the Wind Turbines that have been built on critical migration routes.

Whatever energy you choose I hope that it will save you a lot of money.

Serotonin

Master Mood Regulator In addition to hormones, as pointed out in last couple of corners, there are also neurotransmitters that keep us functioning properly. Neurotransmitters are basically the body's chemical messengers that enable communication within the nervous system, and between the nervous system, and the rest of the body.

Serotonin is a very important neurotransmitter that is the master of our moods! If there happens to be a physiological block that alters its availability to our brain, then some very undesirable effects can come about: Depression, sadness, lethargy, sleepiness and in extreme cases suicidal thoughts or actions.

Serotonin works with receptors in the brain to elevate mood with feelings of happiness and well-being, sharpen memory, and promote healthy sleep habits.

It is produced in the brain and all along the digestive tract. The precursor to serotonin is tryptophan. This amino acid is commonly found in high-protein foods like turkey, eggs, and cheese. But you need to eat these foods with some carbohydrates, to get through the blood-brain barrier, the protective sheath around the brain, which decides what gets in. Basically, it is a bit of an amino acid battle as many of these high protein foods are also high in other amino acids and more abundant so they will get through first. So, tryptophan needs some help from carbohydrates to work its way in. Carbohydrates cause your body to release insulin, which removes all amino acids—except tryptophan—from your blood, leaving tryptophan without competition to enter the brain easily and boosting serotonin levels.

There are plant and dairy based proteins along with carbohydrates to get serotonin in too!

Leonard Allan Stanley Treen

Born June 22, 1936 on Catt Mountain in Lumby, BC. Passed away November 10, 2020 Son of Wilfred and Edith Treen. Len loved Lumby and living the old ways.

He was married to Marleen Treen and had 2 children, Gordon and Cindy Treen. Len had 7 grandkids and 6 great grandkids.

He had alot of history and stories. He always told me he would never have changed anything in his life.

Imagine him coming home in his teens, in the old log home cranking his 78 records. “You ain’t nothing but a hound dog, kicking up your heels.” He lived the life you would dream of, from camping up the creek in the cabins they built, living off the neighbours gardens, making home made wine, rolling tobacco, daming up the creekfor the swimming hole and removing the odd salmon baked in clay for supper.

Len loved sports, hockey, baseball and Soccer. He remembered practising baseball in the Bell Pole yard for the big game. He also loved daning and would have dance parties in the church. Len belonged to the first Lumby 4-H Beef Club.

Mom and Dad built their log home that they dreamed of and he did a little cowboying later in years on his horse “Red”.

He always wanted to write a book about his years and all of the people in the Lumby area.

He was loved by all and we’re going to miss him dearly.
