The people of our community want to be able to continue to support the local crafters and artisans, and we have tried our best to make that possible by gathering over 20 different artist and crafters to showcase samples of their work.

Please come and see the talent of our local community and support our local artisans, all while still maintaining a health conscious environment in this time of social distancing. Many of our artist and crafters are also open to commission so if you see a work you like, but are hoping for something unique and one of a kind this is the time to get it done!

What’s The Difference Between Weather And Climate? You Can’t Weather A Tree But You Can Climate!

The Chill Has Come This week has been a busy one here at the BS Ranch. Most of the leaves that are down have been raked up and are covering my empty garden beds.

Still a little worried about the amount of leaves on my favourite Maple tree and several of my fruit trees that still have solid green leaves not good I prefer to do my own pruning and with snow eminent, Mother Nature may do the honours although as I scan through several weather channels that I follow we may have a bit more time. I sure wish I could pick the forecast that I would like to have. The temperature has been steadily dropping and with snow on the doorstep (literally) I have my doubts that we’ll get off lucky as with the last snow and then a decent warming. I’ve been using my leaf blower to knock down what I can ( much to the annoyance of my neighbours) but still way too many left.

I’ve done my seed order and am excited about a few new items that I will be presenting, if I can get a little more done before any serious snow I will be happy and will have some down time to spend on a few long overlooked house chores before I start again in mid December. There have been a couple of exciting and sad events that have occurred as well. A new presi-

dent in the good old US of A making the world a safer, saner place! And the loss of a great Canadian Alex Trebec, so sad.

Rent Freeze Extended, Pending Increases Cancelled

Effective immediately, the Province is extending the freeze on rent increases until July 10, 2021, under the powers of the Emergency Program Act and COVID-19 Related Measures Act. This is an interim measure to provide stability and advance notice for renters and landlords while a new cabinet is sworn in. Increases set to happen on Dec. 1, 2020, are cancelled, along with all pending increases through to July.

“We know many renters are still facing income loss and even the slightest increase in rent could be extremely challenging. For that reason, we are extending the freeze on rent increases to provide more security for renters during the pandemic,” said Selina Robinson, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing. “We are all in this together, and it is important for both renters and landlords that people can stay in

their homes.”

The Province originally froze rent increases on March 18, 2020, with the ban set to expire Dec. 1.

All renters who have received notice their rent was set to increase after the March 30, 2020, ban, including increases set for Dec. 1, should disregard those notices and continue to pay their current rent amount until July 10, 2021.

Rise in COVID Cases Leads to Delay in Reopening the White Valley Community Centre

The recent rise in cases of COVID-19 in British Columbia has prompted the Regional District of North Okanagan to delay reopening the White Valley Community Centre for bookings. The Pat Duke Arena is still on schedule to reopen by December, following the completion of the renovations, with strict safety protocols in place. This decision will not impact the

Lumby branch of the Okanagan Regional Library, which operates independently within a leased space of the Community Centre.

“The main difference between the community centre and the arena is the availability of staffing. The arena staff are on-site and able to ensure that people stay physically distanced and that the capacity limits and cleaning protocols are maintained. The community centre does not have regular staffing to provide that level of oversight,” said Kevin Acton, Chair of the RDNO Board of Directors.

Capacity at the Pat Duke Arena will be restricted to 50 people, including coaches, volunteers, spectators and staff. A maximum of one spectator per participant will be permitted, provided the 50-person capacity limit allows; however, these restrictions will continue

to be monitored and adjusted as necessary. The public is encouraged to wear masks when physical distancing recommendations cannot be met.

New Dog Licensing Program Launches in the North Okanagan

The Regional District of North Okanagan has launched its new pet licensing program powered by DocuPet. The Canadian company provides a new system that is more convenient, includes a complimentary lost pet service, and donates 20% of proceeds from designer tag sales to a local animal welfare organization.

“We have made the licensing process incredibly simple and have removed differential fees for intact versus altered dogs to encourage more dog owners to license their dogs,” said Ashley Gregerson, Communications Officer, RDNO. “Another benefit of the new program is that dog licences are valid for 365 days, whereas with the previous system, licences were only valid for a calendar year, meaning if someone bought their licence in October of 2019, they would have to renew on January 1, 2020.

Now, they get the value of a full year before renewal,” said Gregerson.

Licences cost $20 and must be renewed annually.

Dog owners who are used to paying more for their intact dogs will see a price reduction, while owners of altered dogs will pay the same as previous years and reap the added benefits of the new DocuPet system.

Christmas linens are being set out in the hallway. Please check out our amazing book supply, it is always replenished, and there are so many good ones coming in all the time. There are great classics in the children’s section too! Here is a reminder with regards to our Recycling program.

Do you have items that are well loved but unusable, but you are hesitant to throw in the landfill? They can be saved! We accept mixed used clothing – all men’s, ladies and children’s clothing and outerwear, including lingerie. Mixed houseware textiles such as bedding, towels, table cloths and drapes. Mixed shoes – men’s, ladies and children’s footwear including dress shoes, slippers, sandals, boots, runners etc. Mixed bags, hats, belts and purses of all kinds.

Please do not include in recycled items: Very torn or dirty clothing, wet items, suitcases or stuffed toys.

Please label the bag or boxes “Recycle” and they will be stored and sold by weigh to be re-used– so our

Coffee Part 2: Antioxidants

by Donna Easto C.H., H.C., M.H., Certified Herbal Educator Our last piece focused on coffee as a stimulant.

In this article, we turn our attention to the antioxidant activity1 of The Irresistible Bean2. Research shows that the most antioxidant-rich beverages are coffee, tea, cocoa and red wine. Of these, coffee and tea provide a significant portion of the daily intake of antioxidants established for humans.

In terms of total antioxidant content, coffee and cocoa are comparable with tea. Cocoa is the most balanced product in terms of antioxidants but does not match coffee and tea consumption rates.

Coffee/ cocoa drinks provide the best antioxidant content. Good news for those of us who love our morning coffee with a dash of cocoa! A half teaspoon or so of pure, healthy vanilla extract and cinnamon will eliminate the need for sugar.

Why the interest in antioxidants? The body already produces antioxidants as part of its normal functioning. Is there a need to supplement our diets with them? Recent research indicates that it does bear consideration.

• Coffee and cancer: the antioxidants in coffee may help reduce cancer-causing mutations to DNA. Studies done with humans have shown moderate-to-high (up to 400mg of caffeine a day) coffee consumption may be associated with slowing the progression or lowering the risk of some cancers, such as breast, colorectal, endometrium and prostate • Coffee consumption has also been linked to lower rates of Dementia and Parkinson’s disease, type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance, and coronary heart disease in women • Studies show that regular coffee consumption may keep the liver healthy by stimulating gas-

tric enzymes Recent studies with both humans and rats suggest that the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and insulin-sensitizing effects of the caffeine and antioxidants found in coffee, alone or in combination, contribute to a wide range of healthy benefits.

Nevertheless, not everyone benefits from drinking coffee. There are serious adverse effects to drinking too much coffee. For some people, even one cup of coffee is too much resulting in headaches, insomnia, dizziness and other unwelcome symptoms. If your sleep is regularly disturbed, you always feel anxious or stressed or experience wide swings in your energy; then, coffee is not a healthy choice for you. Coffee can be addictive; stopping it suddenly leads to nasty withdrawal symptoms. It’s better to reduce intake slowly.

Caution: Caffeine powder, a highly concentrated caffeine or caffeine anhydrous, is being used to stimulate athletic performance or weight loss. According to the U.S. FDA, a teaspoon of caffeine powder could contain the equivalent of 28 cups of coffee.

Greater Vernon Chamber congratulates Harwinder Sandhu

The Greater Vernon Chamber of Commerce is ready to work with Harwinder Sandhu on matters important to local businesses and non-profits as well as the community.

Elections B.C. has confirmed that Sandhu won the riding of Vernon-Monashee after the mail-in ballots were counted for the Oct. 24 provincial election.

“We congratulate Ms. Sandhu on being elected as MLA for Vernon-Monashee and we look forward to establishing a positive and constructive relationship with her,” said Krystin Kempton, Greater Vernon Chamber president.

“The next step will be for the Chamber to reach out to Ms. Sandhu and discuss issues significant to our membership, including the need for Covid-related business support, easing the labour shortage so many employers experience and providing mental health and addiction services closer to home.

As part of the government caucus, Ms. Sandhu is our direct conduit to Victoria.”
