Just for Fun Down on the Farm

Old ranch owner John farmed a small ranch in Lumby. The BC Employment Standards Branch claimed he was not paying proper wages to his workers and sent an agent out to interview him.

“I need a list of your employees and how much you pay them,” demanded the agent.

“Well,” replied old John, “There’s my ranch hand who’s been with me for 3 years. I pay him $600 a week plus free room and board. The cook has been here for 18 months, and I pay her $500 a week plus free room and board. Then there’s the half-wit who works about 18 hours every day and does about 90 percent of all the work around here.

He makes about $10 per week, pays his own room and board, and I buy him a bottle of bourbon every Saturday night.”

“That’s the guy I want to talk to, the half-wit,” says the agent.

“That would be me,” replied old rancher John.

The Art of Remembrance “The living owe it to those who no longer can speak to tell their story for them” –Czeslaw Milosz “The Issa Valley” Art has always been a vessel by which we have used to remember our past, it has documented life in the midst of Covid-19, all the way back to prehistory in the form of cave paintings.

Yet as we follow the vibrant colors of fall on these brisk days of November one thing will be different, there will not be the normal ceremonies to commemorate November 11th, as the Royal Canadian Legion asks people to not gather for Remembrance Day ceremonies across Canada.

Remembrance Day to be Remembered

On the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, World War I ended. That morning, Germany deprived of manpower and supplies were also faced with imminent invasion. The Germans signed an armistice agreement with the Allies in a railroad car outside of Compiegne, France. The First World War left approximately nine million soldiers dead, 21 million wounded and another five million civilians perished from starvation and disease.

World War II then proved to be the deadliest battle in history in terms of total casualties. It is estimated that over 60 million people were lost.

This was about 3% of the entire world population in 1940. These are staggering prices to pay for freedom.

This month will commemorate 102 years since the

end of World War 1. As seniors in this day and age, it is so important that we ensure the youth of today have a fundamental understanding of veterans, of our forefathers that made the ultimate sacrifices. Not only should we pause to remember but also share in the responsibility of passing on the history of sacrifices and courageous actions of those who served, as well as those who are still serving. Taking an active role in making sure that veterans are remembered and honoured is a heartfelt way to say “THANK YOU”.

Veterans’ Week 2020: Annual Event Goes Virtual

Honouring those who served and sacrificed

May those who have served inspire us to make peace.

Veterans’ Week, which runs from November 5 to 11, is an opportunity for Canadians to pay tribute to the extraordinary sacrifices made by our nation’s soldiers. This year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Veterans’ Week is taking place online. As a result, more people will have the chance to participate in the events.

A shared message The National Veterans’ Week Speakers Program has asked current members of the Canadian Armed Forces to deliver segments of this year’s Veterans’ Week speech. The resulting video collage will be played in schools and community organizations across the country during Veterans’ Week.

This is a column meant for fun and some information About myself: I am a Freelance Photographer you often see me on the side of the road or in various places taking photos of different things animals, birds, places, people etc. l have lived in Lumby just over 8 years,you have seen my photos in the newspaper (Lumby Valley Times) and once in awhile in the Vernon Morning Star, and the Lumby Art Gallery. Photography is my passion. Disclaimer: The information on some of my photos that I write about a lot of times come from the Internet or books I research them, hopefully the facts are as close to the truth as I can come.

Once again Remembrance Day will soon be upon us. Every year we gather at the Cenotaph where we honor our fallen soldiers. A lot of people show up for this special day. Most of us have lost someone.

This year will be different. There will not be parades to walk us from the Legions to the Cenotaphs or any ceremonies at the Cenotaphs. There will not be any one to play the pipes or the bugle.

No Cadets, RCMP, Armed Forces, our Mayor, Legion Members or anyone else to carry on the services.

This will be a bleak day for all of us.

It has been suggested that we watch all Ceremonies on our tv's, internet, or Facebook.

At this time, I would like to present to you how our ceremonies would have gone this year.: The first would of course be the famous poem written by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae May 3, 1915 this poem was composed at the battlefront during the second battle of Ypres, Belgium In Flanders Fields the poppies blow between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place: and in the sky The larks still bravely singing fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.

Hormone Function And Your Health

Hormones travel through your body via the blood stream or in the fluid around cells to transport messages and signals between your systems and organs. There is a governing body where this all happens which is the endocrine system.

This system communicates with the organs on how to release/stimulate various hormones. These organs include the pancreas, thyroid, adrenal, ovaries, and testes to name a few.

A lifestyle that includes a healthy diet and exercise can make a profound difference to hormonal balance. Let’s take a closer look at some of these organs and hormonal processes to see how they function and affect your health.

Pancreas Insulin is the hormone that regulates blood glucose (sugar), and the pancreas is responsible for releasing it. To explain this further, once you’ve eaten a meal, particularly carbohydrates, it gets broken down into glucose which is passed into the bloodstream. The pancreas detects rising blood glucose and secretes insulin for energy directed to cells to use.

Problems arise when insulin levels are to low, or when the body’s cells are not interacting with insulin as in insulin resistance, and blood sugar levels rise known as hyperglycemia. If it consists for extended periods of time, prediabetes may arise, eventually leading to type 2 diabetes. Things you can do to help prevent this are, to change your diet and get regular exercise. A diet that consists of complex carbohydrates, protein, healthy fats and fiber is important. This can be achieved by eating more whole foods and limiting most processed, packaged and fast foods. Also, it is imperative to quite smoking, as it is not only a risk factor for insulin resistance and diabetes but also stroke and heart disease.

Thyroid Gland The thyroid is a gland located in front and base of neck

and its hormones play an important role in metabolism, regulation of your weight, energy levels, internal temperature, skin, hair, nail growth, normal heart and digestive function, mood and bone maintenance, and a baby’s brain and nervous system development during pregnancy.

The most prominent hormones of the thyroid gland are Triiodothyronine (T3) and Thyroxine (T4). When T3 and T4 get over or under-produced conditions arise as in Hyperthyroidism and Hypothyroidism.

Hyperthyroidism is an overactive thyroid when too much T3 and T4 in the bloodstream. Conditions that occur in this are Graves’ disease, inflammation of the thyroid or a benign tumor. Signs include weight loss, increased appetite, palpitations, irregular menstrual cycle, tiredness, irritability, and hair thinning.

Hypothyroidism occurs if the thyroid gland does not produce enough of these hormones. This may be due to autoimmune conditions, such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis or certain medications. Hypothyroidism can also occur in pituitary dysfunction, such as pituitary tumors or inflammation.

Hypothyroidism tends to be somewhat hereditary and more common in adults, especially women. Signs may include tiredness, mental depression, feeling cold, weight gain, dry skin, constipation, and menstrual irregularities.

Iodine is an important mineral for normal production of T3 and T4 by the thyroid. In many places in the world salt does not include iodine and it must be supplemented.

Fortunately, in Canada all table salt is iodized. But you could still have a deficiency and if you think you have signs of either, hyper or hypo, you should see your doctor for testing.

OBITUARIES Judy Marie

Van Gameren It is with extreme sadness we announce the sudden passing of Judy Marie Van Gameren at the young age of 55.

Judy was born April 29th, 1965, She is survived by her loving husband Andre, step children Jessica (Tyler O’Dwyer), Denny and Tyren (Amberly) Grandchildren Brett and Caden O’Dwyer, Kason, Everette, Treyton Van Gameren. Her mother Margie French, father Len Klinger(Lorraine) brother Clayton Klinger (Lynn). Sister in-law Alice Ramsey (Don) and brother in-law Ernest (Charity) Judy was predeceased by her brother Raymond, stepfather Ted, mother in-law Fien. Judys father in-law Jan Van Gameren passed away days after Judy.

Judy attended school in Vernon BC and resided in Lumby BC, where she pursued her passion for the outdoors and spent many hours tending to her beautiful gardens. Judy was a gentle soul.

Her love for her four legged fur babies was evident in the love and care she gave them. She leaves behind many loved ones and her smile will be missed by all who knew her.
