Call for Artisans and Crafters From November 1st to December 24th the Monashee Arts Coucil will be hosting a Christmas market is bringing together artisans and shoppers for this Christmas season in a way that respects current health regulations while promoting the enjoyment of the local seasonal shopping experience.

We will be displaying vendors’ work while encouraging the customers to contact the vendor directly to purchase.

What Was The Spider Doing On The Computer?... Searching The Web!!!!

Home Invaders I have mentioned briefly about different pests that can come in on plants and produce especially at this time of year. I thought now was a good time to go a little deeper into this subject. Many other animals and creatures are also preparing for the long cold winter and some of them have your home as an ideal place to spend it. Most of these if not all will be unwelcome.

Spiders, Mice and Rats, Stink Bugs, Ear Wigs and Silver Fish, and the good old Cockroach all need a good home for the winter. Most are harmless, others not so much but all are annoying. They enter in through doors, windows, small openings in foundations, around pipes and cables entering your house, vents, chimneys and other small spaces.

Mice can enter a home through an opening less than the diameter of a pencil, they can jump, climb and swim. They leave behind about 100 feces droppings per day and constant micro droplets of urine that carry many different types of pathogens. They chew wiring that can lead to fire and use various soft materials to nest and can have a half dozen babies every three weeks. Although they have poor eye sight they have a good ears and a great sense of smell and are very adaptable to their environment.

Spiders are mostly way smaller than Mice so they can gain access through even smaller spaces. They are attracted by moisture and food in the form of dead flies. Many people are terrified of spiders but we only have a few really poisonous spiders in our area and these with proper treatment are not fatal. The Brown Recluse and the Black Widow which I have actually had experience with. Not pleasant if you aren’t fond of IV antibiotics a couple times a day for a week. For those who are truly terrified of spiders you have only one option, they do not exist in the Antarctic. They tend to like dark, cool places such as wood piles, attics and basements and can be aggressive when disturbed.

They dislike citrus fruit like lemons and limes, Eucalyptus, Peppermint oil and leaves and vinegar. This can be used to discourage them from entering your

home by applying these scents around windows and doors, be sure to clear up dead and crawling insects in your home including attics and basements by vacuuming often and thoroughly and remove any spider webs.

Outside lighting does not attract spiders but it does attract their food source so use sparingly. Spiders are nocturnal, have poor eyesight and rely on vibration in the air and ground to hunt and navigate their environment. Many people swear that by placing Horse Chestnut also known as Conkers around the house will discourage them. Drill holes in the ends of the chestnuts and place them around the house in the attic, basement, cold room and laundry. They are poisonous to animals so keep them out of reach or put the in mesh bags to prevent any problems.

Ear Wigs hibernate over the winter. They are drawn into your home by moisture, warmth and food all things ideal for reproduction. They do not do damage to your home, they are just annoying, Somewhat related to them is the Silver Fish they too like dark, damp environments in basements, attics, bathrooms and kitchens. They do do damage to your home.

They love paper and will do damage to books, wall paper and clothing. They will invade food sources not properly stored in sealed air tight containers like cereals, rice, pasta, flour and sugar but they can survive a long time without a food source and reproduce rapidly. They are not spreaders of disease but there is nothing worse than pouring milk on your cereal in the morning and finding these floating about.

Stink Bugs do hibernate over the winter. It is called Diapause, they do not feed and are relatively inactive over the winter. They do no damage and do not spread disease just annoying especially when they wake up mid winter for a quick fly about. They attract others to your home by using a pheromone so do not step on them to kill them as your shoes will bring that irresistible aroma into your home.

There are a few more pests that may make an appearance in your home but the prevention and treat-

ment is about the same. Seal door and window frames with caulking and door brush strips. Openings that lead into your home from pipes, wires or cracks should be sealed or use steel mesh to plug them. Put screens over vents. This must be done all over the house including roof and chimney. Keep fire wood at least 20 feet from your home. Remove vegetation and tree limbs that are up against your house. Dehumidifiers will reduce humidity in basements and crawl spaces. Proper storage of food stuffs, make sure that items brought into the house from outside or garages are not contaminated. The same with second hand appliances. Traps, essential oils and sprinkling Diatomaceous earth around baseboards and foundations will deter or destroy them. On that cheery note I wish you Happy Gardening!!!

Hypertension – High Blood Pressure

Staying on top of your health requires more than seeing your healthcare provider for an annual checkup. Nutrition and movement are imperative to keeping your health in check. This week’s corner is on sodium. How much we need and what can it do if we have too much?

Sodium i.e. sodium chloride (NaCl) is salt! It is an essential compound our bodies use to absorb and transport nutrients, maintain blood pressure, keep fluid balance, transmit nerve signals and contract and relax muscles. Sodium is also one of the main electrolytes. We get sodium in many foods that are naturally occurring as in tomatoes, celery, egg whites, and many other fruits and vegetables. When it is found in its natural state, usually it is not a problem. This is because is surrounded in conjunction with other compounds making it balanced, not concentrated - taken out on its own, like when we use table salt.

We only need 500mg a day to survive but the recommendation is 1500mgs and not more than 2000mg per day. This may sound like a lot but considering only 1 teaspoon has about 2300mgs it is easy to see how one can go over 1500mgs without much difficulty. The problem is too much can cause hypertension (high blood pressure). This is known as the silent killer, as it is difficult to feel or notice any signs.

A very easy way to start being aware of sodium intake is to self monitor, by reading labels for sodium content and being aware of any added salt you are using. If you eat a lot of packaged, processed, take out, drive through or even many sit in restaurant foods you can be guaranteed to have a high sodium content in those meals. For example, a typical drive thru bacon egg breakfast sandwich is 740mg of sodium and crispy chicken burger is 980mg. So now you are at 1720mg, then add in a traditional Caesar salad at a whopping

1070mg, you are way over the maximum recommendation by 1,400mg.

A great way to make sure your blood pressure is in check is to get a blood pressure machine. This will measure how hard your heart has to work to pump blood throughout your body and the pressure on blood vessel walls. There are 3 different numbers that will be indicated on the screen.

The top number displaced on the screen is your systolic pressure. This indicates the pressure inside the artery when the heart is contracting or when it pumps blood. The bottom number is the diastolic number which indicates the pressure inside the artery when heart is resting, in-between beats.

There is a third number and that is your heart beats per minute (BPM). Measuring your heart rate is another important measure as it is considered an indicator of heart muscle function. Just like your other measures heart rate can be influenced by activity level, stress, caffeine, anxiety, along with a number of other factors as medications, standing, sitting age….

There are certain numbers we should strive to be in, to stay healthy. For BPM, the average heart rate for a healthy adult is between 60 and 100 beats per minute. For blood pressure the normal range is 120 for systolic and 80 for diastolic. Anything out of normal range you should see your doctor. Numbers out of normal ranges are red flags that indicate you should seriously think about changing your diet and or adding in an exercise regime. Don’t rely on medication alone - help yourself along with medication by eating well and getting some daily activity for longevity and quality of life!

This is a column meant for fun and some information About myself: I am a Freelance Photographer you often see me on the side of the road or in various places taking photos of different things animals, birds, places, people etc. l have lived in Lumby just over 8 years,you have seen my photos in the newspaper (Lumby Valley Times) and once in awhile in the Vernon Morning Star, and the Lumby Art Gallery. Photography is my passion. Disclaimer: The information on some of my photos that I write about a lot of times come from the Internet or books I research them, hopefully the facts are as close to the truth as I can come.

ACHOO! Here it comes, that sound you will be hearing for the next little while. It can be the sound of allergies, or the sound of a cold.

Sneezing, carry Kleenex, or sneeze into your sleeve.

Got a cold coming on. I personally like to use Echinacea, also known as Coneflower. The flower picture you see above is Echinacea. I am not the only one that likes this pretty flower that is in the Daisy Family. The Bees, Hummingbirds, and Butterflies love it. I like planted flowers that they are attracted to, as it helps my flowers look even more beautiful. This flower can grow up to about 20" tall.

Echinacea, is not only a beautiful flower, but also classified as an Herb for the healing properties. People have been using this flower since the 17th cen-

tury. Throughout history this plant has been used to treat flues, colds, snakebites, toothaches, sore throats, coughs, and some infections. If you have an allergy to Daises, or wildflowers, don't use Echinacea as you might have a reaction to it. Sometimes using to high of a dose can also cause some nausea, or you could feel dizzy. Everything in moderation of course.

In the 1930's this well-known flower became lost because of the introduction of antibiotics.

In the 1950's a pharmaceutical company called Sandoz did research on this plant, the findings were that this flower could work as an antiviral, antifungal, and antibacterial, as the roots of Echinacea have milk antibiotics which can work against certain diseases. Usually it is the root of the flower not the flower itself that is used. If you have a symptom that you want to get rid of use it a about

3 times a day.

Don't not overuse this great herb, use it only for eight -ten days.

You can take it internally or as a salve.

So, I am heading off to the store now to get my fresh supply of Echinacea, just in case.

Get Your Bubble Vaccinated

By Susan Brown, President and CEO, Interior Health Right across Canada, more than ever, we need people of all ages and walks of life to get vaccinated against influenza.

The more we reduce the presence of respiratory illness this winter, the better positioned we are to continue fighting against COVID-19.

So far, Interior Health has been fortunate that our health-care system has kept up to the demands of COVID-19. But I can share with you, we are see-

ing challenges in some places, such as testing sites and labs, and we have entered a fragile time with the cooler weather. We need to avoid the influx of really sick patients with influenza, which, combined with COVID-19 pressures, could push our health-care system to the edge.

I know from more than 30 years of experience in health care that getting the flu shot helps prevent the system from surging over capacity.

If you are under 40, you may think influenza and COVID-19 are nothing to fear, but we need everybody to think of others during this difficult time.

While the symptoms for you may be mild, as with COVID-19, you could unknowingly pass the flu to loved ones and it can be fatal.

Our seniors and elders have been there for all of us and they need our support today. I can’t think of a better way to show appreciation than by taking advantage of any defence that will protect their health when they need us the most.

The flu shot is a tool in the tool box. The choice is yours to decide whether to use the tools to protect yourself and the ones you love.

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in many changes to everyone’s lives.

It’s normal to feel sad, stressed, confused, scared or worried. And even though the Public Health actions taken, such as social distancing and maintaining your “bubble”, are necessary to reduce the spread of COVID-19… they can make people feel isolated and lonely and can increase stress and anxiety; in particular with those who may already struggle with pre-existing mental health conditions or substance use disorders.

Engaging in an open dialogue about our emotional well-being with a trusted mental health professional, family members, friends or colleagues can help to improve and maintain our mental health in uncertain times. But sometimes, reaching out is a hard, first step.

ley Community Resource Centre is organizing a number of free, community presentations on topics such as mental health, parenting and resiliency. We are here to support you.

The first being “Your Mental Health” on October 26th from 10 to 11am at the Lumby Legion. If you, or someone you know, are struggling with racing thoughts, anxiety or are feeling exceptionally “stressed”, this presentation will offer practical tools to help you through some challenges you may be facing as well as signs to watch for in your family, friends, neigbors and co-workers. The second will be on “Community Resiliency” on November 2nd at the White Valley Community Hall from 10 to 11 am with Dr. Marie Helene Pellitier, PhD, MDA, Registered Psychologist, and resilience / mental health expert (https://drmhpelletier.com/speaking/).

The remaining presentations will be; • November 24th - location and time TBA – Parenting in a Pandemic • January 6th - location and time TBA – Dream Catchers and a discussion • February 23 at 3pm – location TBA – Medicine Wheel Thanks to United Way Southern Interior BC and the Government of Canada for the Government of Canada’s Emergency Community Support Fund (ECSF) grant, these presentations will be accessible both in person and via Zoom. The Story:

Wendy & Donna, 34 McCord Rd. Why is this recipe special to me? Wendy and I grew up across the road from each other. Kindred spirits from the first, we were seldom apart. Spring, summer, autumn or winter, neither of us ever travelled beyond the city. Our little street was so quiet that we built snow forts in the middle of the road! And we explored; the TTC was our ticket to adventure. We investigated our neighbourhood and beyond. We rode the Ferry to Toronto Island, walked Toronto's beaches and boardwalks, explored every inch of the Royal Ontario Museum and the Art Gallery of Ontario. So you may ask, what have Fern Cakes to with this life-long friendship? Wendy and I usually walked home from High School along Mount Pleasant Road.

En route was an old-style Scottish bakery that made scrumptiously desirable Scottish Fern Cakes. If the sight of those lovely tartlets in the window didn't draw you in, the scent of the baking would! Every Friday, we would nip into the bakery on the way home and combine our meagre allowances to buy four. Of course, they must be eaten before arriving home.

Wendy's dour Scottish grandmother looked dimly upon such frivolities. In assembling this recipe/story collection, no combination seemed more fitting than that of Wendy and me and the Scottish Fern Cakes.

My dear friend is gone now, taken by cancer. But, I can still picture us sitting in Davisville park, savouring the Cakes' almondy sweetness and the sweetness of the moment. Friends forever.

The Recipe • Ready in 20 minutes • Cook time 35 minutes • Calories 149 Ingredients: • Preheat oven to 200C/400F • Tart Shells (your recipe) • Filling • Icing • Chocolate for the Fern Design Preparation Filling: • 3-4 tbsp raspberry or blackberry jam • 6 oz butter • ¾ cup sugar • ¾ cup ground almonds • 2 eggs, beaten • 1/2 tsp pure almond extract Icing: • ⅔ cup confectioner’s sugar • 2-3 tbsp water or milk For the fern design: Melted chocolate in a small plastic bag with a tiny bit of the tip cut off Instructions: Make your favourite sweet, buttery pastry, cut into circles to fit mini tins. Press small holes with a fork into each shell’s bottom and sides and bake for about 15-20 minutes. They should not be fully cooked. Remove and set aside.

Spread the jam on the bottom of the crust.

Make the Filling: 1. 1. Melt the butter, remove from heat and stir in sugar, ground almonds, eggs and almond extract. Pour the mixture over the jam, not too full.

2. 2. Reduce oven to 350F/180C and bake for about 20 minutes until golden brown and the middle has set. Cool completely in the pan on a rack.

Decorating: 1. Make the icing thick but still runny; cover each tartlet with the icing.

2. Right away, draw zig-zag lines with the melted chocolate in each tart’s centre, drag a toothpick or knife through the design to make the traditional fern motif. Allow to set before storing - or eating!

A loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, brother, and friend.

“IF YOU CAN’T BE GOOD, BE CAREFUL.” Was a saying he always said with a grin. Ray was a one-of-a-kind character and a lifetime resident of Lumby, BC. He passed away in Vernon Jubilee Hospital at the age of 86 years young.

Predeceased on January 5, 2018 by his wife of 60 years, Lorraine. Also predeceased by his parents Ingmar and Mabel, his brothers Wally, Eddie, and Joe, his sisters Helen, Mabel and Clara, son-in-law Glen “Ernie” Robertson, and his best friend Brian.

He is survived by his children Rick (Kim), Laurie, Randy (Judy), Michelle (Fred); grandchildren Brandon, Melissa, Shawna, Tanya (Shawn), Kyle (Daina), Taylor (Cole), Cara (Cody), Christian (Maddie), Dyllen, and Josee; great-grandchildren Zoie, Tarik, Drake, Hayden, Brooklynn, Damien, Mackenzie, and Sophia, his best friend Penny, as well as extended family and friends.

He will be truly missed and loved by all the people he touched in his lifetime.

Ray’s family would like to thank everyone who helped Ray along his journey over the last 6 months. Your compassion and care are truly appreciated.

A special thanks to Dawn and the girls at the Snac Shac, and Allen and the girls at Sheardowns (Freshmart), both in Lumby, for making Ray’s trips “up town” so enjoyable for many years. A special thanks also to Margie and Dana of Jitterbeans in Lumby, for preparing frozen meals for Ray that he always raved about.

A celebration of life for Ray will be held at a later date.
