The Emergency Services Fight Back Against Hunger Record Levels with over 6300 lbs. of food and $4000.00 in cash donations

6th Annual Lumby and District Emergency Services Fight Back against Hunger Food drive supporting the Lumby Food Bank.

At 5:00pm, Emergency Service vehicles drove throughout the village

of Lumby and the surrounding community with sirens wailing and lights flashing. Following behind in personal vehicles to gather the non perishable food items were emergency service men and women, kids, and members of the community. When the items arrived at the food bank, volunteers weighed and stacked the bags as they were delivered.

Local community member, RCMP Const. Gary McLaughlin has been organizing this very important food drive since 2014 for the village.

ArtKids! Now at the Village Gallery!

The ability to create is a human necessity it helps us define who we as a human being.

With help from local schools and parents the Monashee Arts council have been able to bring together 30 youth artists and over 50 pieces of art work for ArtKids! From portraits of celebrities to landscapes and abstract takes of life have brought in a kaleidoscope of skilled young artists from as young as four years all the way up to 24 years old.

Please visit the Village Gallery, 1975 Vernon Street. (Highway 6) during our open hours of 10-4, Monday to Saturday.

Also remember October 31st (Halloween) will be our second hand art supply sale out front the Gallery. We hope you will come stock up on artist supplies for the young artist in your family while you enjoy the show.

Spend time in nature with a friend It is scientifically proven that spending time in nature and immersing yourself in the outdoors has a calming effect on your mind. Nature is the perfect place for self-care, especially if you can recruit a good friend or family member. Now remember- it doesn’t have to be a 20km hike this side of Mount Everest. It can be something as simple as sitting under the tree across the street or strolling down through the grass in the field feeling the wind beneath your wings.

Start a gratitude journal Practicing gratitude is like practicing anything else, the more you do it the better you get at it. The better you get at it, it seems like there is more to be grateful for. Once again, improving your mental health and by trying something new and forcing your brain to think in a new way, may help to declutter some of the spider webs that could have possibly accumulated up there in the meantime. Gratitude is proven to help people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships.

Organize a weekly phone call with a friend or loved one Having that commitment can give you something nice to look forward to, and help the feeling of connection. Battling isolation and loneliness are not easy

tasks and having strategies that help are always a good idea. Making it more official and scheduling it as you would another appointment proves to be quite helpful in keeping normalcy, and it’s always a good idea to have check ins!

Start or join a book club Some people have said book clubs are a thing of the past now with technology, but it’s quite the contrary.

People are finding themselves going back to basic things that worked. However, book clubs online have also become a “thing” so if that is your niche then you are in luck. There are great book clubs that still meet face to face or even do phone ins during the time of isolation. Reading provides great mental stimulation, and imagination. Many colleges offer special book clubs for seniors that are moderated by professors.

So get busy and get happy!

were associated with considerably fewer adverse effects than pharmaceuticals (typically gastrointestinal effects and reduced liver function). Although medications were shown to be just as effective in reducing the risk of diabetes, there were concerns about taking medication over a course of a lifetime as even minor adverse effects become more significant, if a medication is to be taken for life. It was noted that compliance is key to lifestyle interventions, so strategies towards this method needs to be enhanced. Education on living a healthy lifestyle through diet and exercise are imperative. Inventive strategies, in a digital world, to entice individuals to pay more attention to their diet and the importance of exercise to even get up and move more throughout the day are needed.

To further support the above, take a look at Blue zone areas from around the world. These areas show the least incidence of many types of diseases including Type 2 Diabetes. In Blue Zones, there are a higher number of people who live longer than the average age of most other people, outside of Blue Zones.

Disclaimer: The information on some of my photos that I write about a lot of times come from the Internet or books I research them, hopefully the facts are as close to the truth as I can come.

Not only does it make your skin look and feel better, but it also can help to unclog and minimize your pores. Reduce the ugly Blackheads, reduce the looks of fine lines and wrinkles, detoxifies the skin cells. Helps to control excessive oil in your skin, helps to brighten your dull skin, helps to improve your skins tone. Softens your skin texture, will enhance your skins clarity, it will also

lighten up the skin's hyperpigmentation, also helps to make the behave younger.

Most people do not realize that as well as your body having being exfoliated your lips need to be exfoliated as well, but because they are very fine, they should only be exfoliated only once a week.

Your face should be exfoliated 1-3 times a week, depending how sensitive your skin is and the products you use.

There are a lot of different brands of Exfoliants also called Body Scrubs. It is up to you to decide which one is best for you. If you don't want to buy any, or you are not sure which ones are best for you, check out your home and I'll bet that you will find things in your home that will work just as good. Like, Brown Sugar a natural body scrub. Honey, works great as well as Oats not only good for the body, but also good for the face. Salt ( if you have very sensitive skin salt is probably not the best scrub for you), Apples, Rice, Coffee, not just for drinking or in your garden but it is also a

great exfoliant. This is probably one of the better ones out there as it is a very good antioxidant and helps to promote collagen formation. Ground Coffee can also help to treat cellulite. Mold it into cube forms and it will help with stretch marks. Coffee is a great exfoliant for your feet, and add some essential peppermint oil this can help with achy feet with a nice scent. Exfoliating Bars, Milk, Flaxseeds, Yogurt added to your bath water. Baking Soda (of course) Baking Soda is very useful for so many different things.

There are a lot of different recipes that can be found on the good old internet, check them out try the ones you think will work best for your skin, and soon once again you will have beautiful soft skin that you will be proud of , and your largest organ: the skin will thank you.

Middle Shuswap and Lumby Water Stewards

Since the spring of 2013 a small group of volunteers has gone out several times a year to take water samples from various sites along Bessette Creek and its tributaries, as well as at a couple of places on the Shuswap River. With funding provided by the Regional District of North Okanagan, the water samples are analyzed in Kelowna for physical aspects, bacteria, and chemicals.

The standard required of water quality depends on the use envisioned for that water; aquatic life needs a different quality than agricultural irrigation does, and water suitable for swimming may not be acceptable for drinking.

Our number of analytes (subjects of analysis) is large, and each has various standards depending on the water use the standard applies to.

Let’s choose a couple of common uses: by swimmers, and by aquatic life. The most common human or livestock use perhaps is drinking, but drinking any of the water from the sources we sample would not be prudent.

We measure several chemicals and other factors which might cause harm if you immerse yourself (swim) in a wa-

Recipes And Stories About Food, Family And Origins

by Donna Easto The Farmer’s Almanac predicts a wet, wild and white winter in the west. But nothing, not even COVID, can diminish our love of sharing favourite foods and food-related stories.

Canadian food is sometimes thought to be boring.

But, it’s so much more than poutine and butter tarts!

We are a country woven together from many different people, languages, lands, traditions, and foods. You just have to look at some of the celebrations of winter, Hanukkah, St. Lucia Day, St. Nicholas Day, Christmas, Kwanzaa, Winter Solstice, Mahtahitowin, Chinese New Year, New Year’s Day, Three King’s Day (Epiphany), Ukrainian Christmas and Malanka, to realize Canada’s complexity.

Over the winter of 2020-2021, I’m hoping to put together a unique cookbook, one that not only features delicious recipes, and their origins, it will also share stories of special times or special people related to food.

For example, I can not remember having home-made desserts as a child - other than the occasional bowl of lime Jello. However, once a year, my grandmother created what has to be Canada’s best lemon meringue pie. Her way with meringue was as close to sinful as my gran ever got. Surprisingly, the recipe was one that a lady named Miss Prissie (no joke) of Toronto shared with my great-grandmother in the early 1900s.

I’m pleased that the Lumby Valley Times will be printing your recipes and stories and offering assistance in the completion of the cookbook. Whether it will be an e-book or a physical book has not yet been

decided. If there is any profit from the book, it will be given to a local charity.

Here’s what’s needed: 1. A beloved (and tested) recipe.

2. If possible, a picture of the dish.

3. Your story about the food, or something you associate with the recipe or recipe. This could cover a person, a place, a time, or the origin of the food.

4. You may choose to do only a recipe, a story, or a recipe and a story.

Elaine Marion Dithurbide peacefully passed, at home, surrounded by her immediate family on September 10, 2020.

Elaine is survived by her husband George, so Ron, daughter Karen, numerous grand children and great grand children. Sisters Marilyn, Susan (Mike) and her brother John. Elaine is predeceased by her parents Robert and Rita Stix.

Elaine loved gardening, hunting, fishing and any and all adventures involving a dusty back road.

Elaine’s kindness and understanding touched and changed many lives.

Nothing was more important to Elaine than family.

Elaine is greatly missed by all who knew her.

The Lumby and district public market has now closed for the season. We had a great time this year. The weather mostly held out, sure there were a couple of windy days, and one rain shower on our last day but hey not all the days can be perfect.
