Art Chairs!

These gorgeous chairs are a recent addition to our community and show of some great talent.

They are past of the Lake Country ArtWalk Festival.

The ArtWalk Planning Committee has commissioned 45 artists to turn basic wooden chairs, Muskoka or Adirondack style chairs, into works of art. These Art Chairs will now appear in the municipalities throughout the Okanagan Valley.

Within days, 14 communities will see the appearance of a cluster of three Art Chairs somewhere in a park or along a beach. The cluster of three chairs will be placed six feet apart, which will keep everyone safe while still encouraging coming together for a visit, or just to enjoy the scenic surroundings.

The paintings on the Art Chairs are as varied as the artists who did the paintings. From humourous, to reflective to beautiful, the images on

these chairs will be entertaining to everyone. As a bonus, each Art Chair includes a short, powerful saying that will give us all something to think about.

In store this week, we have bins of fabric out to choose from, and the Halloweeen and fall decor is starting to roll out! We are your place to be for all things Halloween! Fall boots and shoes will be out very soon too! Tuesday there will be an abundance of new and like new small kitchen appliances, clean, tried and tested at our usual bargain pricing!

Many of you are cleaning the closets as you shift into fall. We know you think of us when sorting, but did you know we also accept those garments that are less that wear-worthy? We accept recyclable items: used men, ladies and children clothing and outerwear, linens and towels, mixed shoes, bags, belts and hats! Please label the bag “Recycling” or “Rags”. What not to include in these bags: very torn or dirty clothing, wet clothing, suitcases or stuffed toys. We are close to filling the trailer, and every pound helps.

We are located in the Arbor Park shopping mall between the Dollar Dollar Store and the Pagoda Inn Restaurant. Store hours are Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday and 11am to 3pm. Donations are being accepted at the trailer in the parking lot Tuesday and Thursday 11-3 and Saturday 12-1. Please refrain from leaving your contributions in the hallway space. What Does Daylight Savings Time Mean In Vancouver... An Extra Hour Of Rain!

Fall Yard Work

With a yard and garden there is no end to the work that needs to be done. Especially at this time of the year. Many of you are probably harvesting the bounty of your gardening, canning, drying and other wise preparing for winter. Fortunately the weather will be in our favour for a while yet but it is hardly the time to be complacent as there is a lot to do before winter hits and the days grow shorter. Plants that you have taken outdoors for the summer should be taken back into the house soon so as not to cause too much shock at the difference in heat and humidity. If you are collecting seeds from your favourite plants this should be done while the cleaning up planter and pots for fall. Fall plantings of bulbs like Tulips, Daffodil, Crocus, Fritillaria, and Hyacinth should be planted soon as well as Garlic allowing for good root development (about 6 weeks) before the ground freezes. The weather predictions I have seen indicate a rainy fall with a touch of snow toward the end of October. Perennial plants and flowers, bushes and trees should be planted now and well watered until the ground freezes. Bulbs such as Gladiola, Calla and Cana lily, Dahlia should be lifted soon as well, I usually wait until the tops have frozen but that may be a while yet. This is usually my prompt as well to deadhead and remove the growth that has died back, do remember to leave some plants like sedum and other seed bearing plants for the birds. Garden plantings that are disease free can be composted or buried in trenches in the garden it is also a good time to put a good base of compost in your garden to enrich the soil for next years plantings.

Be sure to do a good weeding of your garden and flower beds and do not use these in your compost as many weed seeds are not destroyed by composting. Manure

Water And Its Importance In Your Body Eating may look different for each individual but there is no leeway when it comes to water – every body requires it. There’s no question your body is healthiest when you practice proper hydration.

Although, there lies some confusion about why water is important.

Water facilitates countless physiological processes, including, digestion, elimination of waste, and protection. It all starts in your head specifically your mouth in the form of saliva. But also, your brain we need to have a different relationship with water. Many people attribute it to being boring. There are many ways to make water intake more fun as was mentioned in a previous corner. Herbal teas made warm or cold or having flavored non sweetened carbonated waters.

With no additives these all are the same as drinking water. Also, the 8x8 rule to begin with - 8oz 8x per day and 1x1 rule no more than 1 liter per hour as that’s all the kidneys can handle.

Back to saliva, this is the first steps in the digestion process by helping break down food into smaller pieces and washing it down. Water then continues through your stomach mixing with your food and toward the small intestine. That’s where most of the water you drink is absorbed. This absorbed water is then transported through your body in blood. So, drinking plenty of water helps you maintain a healthy blood supply in more ways then one. Waste material can build up in your blood and needs to be removed, which brings the next step of the water journey—the kidneys.

A few things will tell you if you haven’t had enough water. If you are thirsty you are already dehydrated or if your urine is dark and thick. Note urine can change colour depending on what you have ingested. Beets or dark food colourings can make it look like you have blood in your urine. Certain vitamins can make your urine look neon. So, it is important to know why your urine is coloured but also its consistency.

Disclaimer: The information on some of my photos that I write about a lot of times come from the Internet or books I research them, hopefully the facts are as close to the truth as I can come.

As you have probably noticed, it is cooler outside to not just use my electric base boards which cost a and inside. It is time to put on a little bit of heat. Submitted by Melody Bosk It was apple time in our community recently and with the generosity of Todd McCrindle from OK Tire in Lumby we were all able to have some freshly picked juicy apples.

The best part of this entire apple endeavor was that it didn't cost us 'po folk a small fortune to have a taste of some nice fresh fruit, and better yet was that all the money raised on this apple donation spree was going right back into our community-via our local Food Bank!

With over $1600.00 raised in 2 days you could see from the smiles on Todd and Robert that there lies an underlying sense of pride.

Todd in the pride that he was able to bring such a huge benefit to the community and its people, and Robert's sense of pride for the generosity in the community that he calls his home.

It was an amazing endeavor that was undertaken

Iron Deficiency

by Donna Easto, C.H., H.C., M.H., Certified Herbal Educator Iron-deficiency anemia is the most prevalent type of anemia globally and is common in people with celiac disease. In a study of newly diagnosed celiacs, one-third had anemia. There's evidence that people who report constipation as their main symptom may have a more severe form of celiac disease than those who have diarrhea as their primary symptom.

Among the indications of iron deficiency anemia are fatigue, anxiety, irritability, depression, heart palpitations, poor concentration, constipation, loss of appetite, and cravings (Pica) for certain foods or nonfoods like ice chips, laundry starch, and dirt.

Why do iron deficiency anemia and celiac disease so often appear together? Damage from CD mostly occurs at the duodenum, a section of the small bowel where the vast majority of iron absorption from food occurs. This results in iron-deficiency anemia, characterized by low levels of red blood cells and hemoglobin in the body. Found within red blood cells, hemoglobin is a type of protein responsible for carrying oxygen from the lungs to various parts of the body.

In anemia, you don't have enough hemoglobin, so oxygen delivery throughout your body is impaired. As a result, cells don't receive sufficient oxygen to function correctly. Aside from people with CD, women, preschool-age children, and persons with chronic conditions such as cancer and IBS are at the highest risk of developing anemia.

Our pioneer ancestors and traditional herbalists studded apples with iron nails to get elemental iron. Nowadays, the more commonly used (and safe) remedies in herbal practice are: • Stinging Nettle leaf brewed into a strong infusion. Rich in iron, chlorophyll and vitamin C, easily accessible nettles brewed as a tonic tea will provide elemental iron. However, it

• If you're looking for an over-the-counter remedy, try Floradix Iron and Herbs, a popular, agreeable and easy to digest source of elemental iron and iron-rich herbs.

As an experienced herbal do-it-yourselfer, and someone with CD who has struggled with iron deficiency anemia, I opt to make my own ironrich syrup: • Combine: ½ ounce Yellow Dock root (14g) with ½ ounce Dandelion root (14g) Directions: Make a decoction by simmering both herbs (28g total) in 4 cups of water uncovered until reduced to 1 cup. Strain out the liquid, compost the herbs, add ½ cup blackstrap molasses to the liquid, mix until blended and refrigerate. It will keep up to 2 weeks refrigerated. Dose: 1-2 tablespoons up to two times daily, depending upon the severity of the anemia.

The re-development of the Coldstream Town Center area will take a major step forward with the creation of 84 new child care spaces and the replacement of the Women’s Institute Hall. The new community hall will replace the existing Women’s Institute Hall and the new child care spaces will be constructed on the adjacent vacant land. The new facilities will be completed thanks to previously announced grant funding totalling $5,092,365.

The new child care facility will add 24 infant/toddler spaces, 25 spaces for children aged three to kindergarten, 10 pre-school spaces and 25 spaces for school-aged children. The District of Coldstream has partnered with Maven Lane who will operate the child care facility on the District’s behalf.

“The child care spaces in the new Coldstream facility will provide much needed support to families in our community as they return to work and school,” said Coldstream Mayor Jim Garlick. “The new Coldstream facility is centrally located, with an elementary school across the street, accessible and will be an important part of the revitalization of our Town Center area.”

“On behalf of the North Okanagan Child Care Society (Maven Lane), I would like to express our sincere appreciation to the District of Coldstream for the opportunity to join forces to address the provincial child care crisis” says Hollie Henderson, Executive Director of NOCCS.“ With this partnership, we will have the ability to provide families with access to high quality and affordable early learning programs. A Provincial General Election has been called for Saturday, October 24. We’ve been working with the Office of the Provincial Health Officer and WorkSafeBC to make sure it’s conducted safely for voters, candidates and election workers. We want to make sure that voters don’t have to choose between safeguarding their health and exercising their right to vote.
