Monashee Arts Council Re-Opens Village Gallery in Downtown Lumby After a three-month closure due to the coronavirus, The Village Gallery in downtown Lumby will re-open on July 2, 2020 with a new art show from QuArtz, the quilting arts subgroup of Vernon Silver Star Quilters.

The QuAtrz show features art quilters who have incorporated tea bags (yes, tea bags) into their art pieces. For the 2018-19 year, each quilter used their artistic imagination in a theme along with the application of monthly techniques to create their unique art piece. The show will include one of a kind QuArtz Art, cards and postcards. Quilter and Lumby show organizer, Linda Kuraoka says, “This is a delightful show of about 17 larger pieces as well as art cards, art tags and more. It will appeal to quilters, fabric artists, multimedia artists and of course, tea lovers of all ages.”

Some pieces will be for sale while others are simply on display to complete the show.

The QuArtz rendition of Tea Bag Art will be on display for the month of July at The Village Gallery, 1975 Vernon St. Lumby. Health and safety procedures including hand-sanitizing, physical distancing, nontouch payment, and plexiglass barriers will be in place.

The Village Gallery is grateful to their landlord, suppliers, and individual donors who supported the gallery through three months of expenses while closed due to the coronavirus pandemic. What Do You Call A Bear With No Teeth?… A Gummy Bear!

Bring on some Summer Weather Although I don’t really want the temperature to escalate into to high 30’s, a little more sun and heat would be wonderful. I think that this weekend will be the 12th weekend of rain and although it does save a lot in time and energy I’m sure we and our yards and gardens could use some sun and heat. Several people have mentioned problems with growing cucumbers this year, both direct seed sprouting and bedding plant failure seem to be the complaint. It could be that it has just been too wet. Look to see if water is pooling on the surface during and after a rain, if it is , perhaps some soil amendments like sand or compost deeply dug in to the soil will alleviate the problem, this normally done in the fall or early spring before planting but if there is continued failure of plant growth you may be required to do some serious interventions. Another good indication in both the yard and garden of a surplus of moisture is the growth of mushroom and other fungi, aeration may help. The use of a wide tined garden fork will do if the area isn’t too large. Of course one also should be looking at pests like cutworms, snails or small rodents that could be at fault although they are not usually dedicated to ruining just one kind of plant in the garden cucumber plants are very tasty.

If you are using mulch to suppress weeds you may want to remove it at this time but keep it handy in case we do get some heat as it will suppress those lovely weeds and conserve the water in your soil. Looking at the longer term weather forecasts it certainly won’t be

a typical July with our daily temperatures not ofter breaking into the 30’s. Maybe August will look more familiar heat wise this year, so far this is good for our forests and air quality.

I wish to thank and commiserate with the gentleman and fellow bee keeper who called regarding the bear issue out here on Albers Road. I certainly understand your anger and frustration and the loss of your bees. I finally saw the culprit, caught her red handed munching on sunflower seeds out of a sealed container that she worked open in a small building next to my house. She is a magnificent looking bear with healthy shinny auburn red hair likewise the two smaller bears that were with her. They were less than half her size and remained just outside the yard. I am grateful that she did not take a swipe at my dogs and instead easily leaped over the fence. I was shocked that when she was on the other side of the fence did hiss and lunge at my dogs instead of making haste into the woods.

Then I saw that a small baby was up a tree right along the fence line and both were anxiously whining and both disappeared rapidly once I called the dogs into the house. I guess this is a story of the 4 bears. I sure hope that our meeting will discourage her from coming back there will be no sunflower seeds available to her. The cherries are just starting to show some colour and I hope that unlike last year when she or some other bear ate all the unripe cherries and smashed my trees very badly.

COVID-19 Adding Weight To Already Crushing Financial Pressures On BC Fruit Growers More than 67 percent of farmers indicate they have reduced fruit production as a result of uncertainties and risks created by COVID-19, according to a member survey from the B.C. Fruit Growers’ Association (BCFGA).

The survey paints a stark picture of the devastating impacts of the pandemic on an already struggling fruit industry, and the real threat to food security in B.C. as producers are forced to cut crops to stay afloat.

“We knew things would be bad coming into the growing season this year, but these numbers are extremely troubling even to those of us in the industry,” said Pinder Dhaliwal, president of the BCFGA. “These numbers should worry anyone concerned prices have been so depressed for three years running about where their food will be coming from this fall, that the cost to produce has actually been higher than and how much it’s going to cost.” the price farmers receive for their crops.

Stirring Things Up – With a Saw? Harold and Linda are local seniors living in the area and like most of the mature adults in our community, they have been social distancing for months now. A few weeks ago, they received a phone call from a friend suggesting that the duo spend a weekend camping in her wide open “back forty”, a sprawling property. As it has been quite some time since this fun loving couple had been out into the world, they jumped at the opportunity to enjoy this unique opportunity and immediately began packing all the necessities that a weekend stay in a tent would require.

After much organizing and planning they were off for a few days to appreciate different views and scenery. When the “home away from home camp site” was comfortably set up, the seniors began preparing their first meal on their mini vacation. It was then discovered that they remembered the tent pegs, the hammer,

the blankets, chairs, pillows, plates; even the hand saw….but there was no cooking utensils…. Well, no bother, as Lumby seniors are very resourceful and nothing should put a damper on a long awaited outing; Harold just whipped up his famous scrambled eggs using his handsaw to flip and stir! Linda didn’t complain, she was just thrilled that she had someone cooking for her.

When Linda is not enjoying delicious food prepared with hardware tools, she spends much of her time beautifying the garden beds around her complex. Her spring poppy flowers (pictured) are an incredible sight to see. Thanks for reminding us that age is only a number!

given by a small group of artists. During this time, the Co-op re-assessed the feasibility of re-opening under COVD-19 restrictions. The group decided to approach the Monashee Arts Council (MAC) with a proposal to make the Gallery more sustainable as a non-profit gallery under the MAC umbrella. Arts Co-op Chair, Robin LeDrew says, “We are pleased Co-op members will continue being involved in presenting shows in the Gallery under the Monashee Arts Council’s operation, and that the Gallery will still have a home in Lumby.”

Gallery hours are Monday-Saturday 10-4pm, starting July 2. Guests are encouraged to call ahead to schedule time in the gallery. The Village Gallery and Monashee Arts Council can be contacted at 778-473-3029.

public: “Artists have been attracted to this valley as a place to live and keeping this gallery open will allow for greater exposure to their work as well as be an asset to the community. The Council has applied to obtain charitable status.

Puffiness, bloating, edema = water retention – HYDRATION Why does this happen? The body tries hard to keep itself in homeostasis (balance) in many ways and one of the keyways is through electrolytes (minerals).

• Too high a concentration of minerals, in cells = water being let into the cells • Too high water in the cells = minerals being brought into the cells.

A short-term minor imbalance won’t kill us, but it is a sign that we should pay attention. This can happen at any time of the year, but summer seems to be most prevalent. It can seem to happen out of nowhere and suddenly your ankles are puffy and your fingers are like sausages. It’s usually because we are not quite climatized for the hot day that comes out of nowhere, or you literally just spent too much time in the sun.

It seems odd to think if you are dehydrated how can you be retaining water? But it makes sense for cell salvation. Cells are alerted of danger and go into a water starvation mode, hanging onto whatever they have not letting go, thus, retaining water.

Signs of dehydration: • puffiness • dark yellow and thick urine • dry mouth • dizziness • headache • dry skin • thirst, or thirst not being quenched.

• Sweet food cravings - the reason for this is that when the body is dehydrated it cannot absorb nutrients properly. The liver needs water to release energy, so the body responds by looking for a quick energy source – glucose (sugar), hence = the sweet cravings.

The 3 main electrolytes that have to do with fluid balance are sodium, chloride (often always found together as table salt) and potassium. These are the main ones you will find in supplementation or sports drinks. The added salt and sugar in these drinks are because sodium requires glucose to be absorbed, which takes place in the colon, resulting in water re-

When exercising strenuously add 8oz every 15 minutes as sweating will draw water out of the body.

In conclusion adding electrolytes will help for either dehydration or overhydration, for mild symptoms as bloating or puffiness.

NOTE: If you have more severe signs (vomiting, diarrhea, fever, confusion, seizures...) SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION. 20% of our water comes from food we eat and the other 80% is from a combination of what we drink.

Easy ways to get in your electrolytes in addition to supplementation or sports drinks mentioned above are: 1. Eat high water content foods as, cucumbers, watermelon, cantaloupe, tomatoes and or strawberries, as they are 90% water and will have some electrolytes too.

2. Drink 2 cups water with, juice from half a lemon, some of the structural issues in our industry, food security and the food supply chain are at the mercy of whatever the next natural disaster is to come along.”

The BCFGA appreciates previous actions and financial supports provided by the Canadian and B.C. governments – including COVID-related emergency measures as well as ongoing agriculture industry risk management programs. But many challenges remain both in terms of increased costs and securing adequate amounts of labour.

It's Great to Be a Canadian I know people are wondering what we can do for Canada Day this year during the COVID 19 as there will not be a lot of outdoor festivities with a lot of people.

Well you can socially distance with a small group of friends, or you now use zoom, google chat, Facebook live etc.

Whatever it is that you choose to do have fun with it.

Don't forget that even in all this uncertainty that we live in right now, Canada is still a very beautiful, wonderful country.

People all around the world come to visit us, as we are considered to be very polite, very courteous, and very easy to talk to.

We have awesome athletes, and hey we invented Hockey!

We are also known to have more than 2 million patents which gave us big inventions like the Insulin, The Telephone, Cable TV. We are known to have a low crime rate as compared to other countries.

We have more clean water then other countries.

Our Ski resorts are known worldwide, there are even some people that come from Switzerland to ski on our famous hills.

We have gifted artists everywhere. The singers and actors that come from Canada are truly amazing.

Just to name a few of them: Colin James (one of my favs) Byran Adams, Drake, Gordon Lightfoot, Neil Young( who by the way although he lives in the USA, he never became an American Citizen by his own choice.) 5 Things Canadians Do Best Canadians have a global reputation for being friendly and polite. However, Canucks have a lot more going for them than being well-mannered. To celebrate Canada Day, here are five things that this country and its citizens do best.

1. Comedy What do Eugene Levy, Mike Myers, Samantha Bee, John Candy, Catherine O’Hara and Jim Carrey have in common? They all hail from the Great White North and are prominent names in the world of comedy.

You may have sung it in grade school and still hear it before hockey games, but what do you really know about “O Canada?” Here are some fun facts about our national anthem.

• It was originally written in Quebec “O Canada” was first commissioned in 1880 by the Lieutenant Governor of Quebec for Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day. The song’s music was composed by Calixa Lavallée and the lyrics were written by poet and judge Sir Adolphe-Basile Routhier.

• It wasn’t translated until 1908 The English version was originally written by the Honourable Robert Stanley Weir. Since then, it’s undergone a few changes, including the addition of a fourth, more religious verse in 1926 and another change to make the anthem gender neutral in 2018.

• The English and French versions are nothing alike Aside from the words “O Canada,” the lyrics to the English and French versions of the anthem are completely different. The French lyrics make reference to the Catholic religion and refer to Canada as a land of ancestors. The English version is a simpler affirmation of love and service to the nation.

• It wasn’t official until 1980 “O Canada” didn’t officially become the national anthem until 1980. Before then, “God Save the Queen” was sung at important events and it remains the royal anthem of Canada.

2. Hockey This sport is an inarguable part of the Canadian identity. Professional teams have won more championships than any other country, and national teams regularly top the world rankings.

3. Cottage country Canada has more lakes than any other country in the world.

When combined with ocean coastlines, mountain ranges, unique deserts and abundant wilderness, Canada provides more opportunities to get away from it all than just about anywhere else.

4. Slang In addition to their regional accents, Canadians use terms and idioms that’re all their own. Where else can you say, “I’m going to put on my toque, drive a few clicks down the road and pick up a two-four”?

5. Snack foods From Nanaimo bars and butter tarts to poutine and donairs, Canada is home to some of the best snack foods out there. Our chocolate bars are also second to none. In fact, Coffee Crisp, Smarties, Mr. Big, Aero and Caramilk can only be found on Canadian shelves. Additionally, dill pickle and ketchup chips are unique to Canada.

This year on July 1, take a moment to reflect on all the things that make this country and its citizens great. Happy Canada Day!

New community program empowers youth to ‘Build Back Better’ Engaging youth to work on community service projects so they can help their communities “build back better” from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic is the goal of a new $5-million Youth Community Partnership program.

“We recognize that COVID-19 continues to dramatically impact young people’s prospects for work, which they typically use to leverage future job prospects or to pay for their education or training,” said Melanie Mark, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Training. “Now, more than ever, young people are looking for ways to support themselves, while giving back to their communities. Engaging in safe, physically distanced local projects is an incredible opportunity for young people to acquire new skills, earn money and contribute to building back an even better B.C.” Communities around B.C. can apply to fund a community-service project of their choosing – like trail building, beach clean-up or invasive species removal, upgrading local parks or working for a local charity.

In turn, they provide skills and work experience to young people who are unemployed, between 15-29 years of age, through the project. These young participants will benefit by applying the work-related skills and experience they gain on various projects in further education, employment or future careers.

“I encourage communities around B.C. to take advantage of the Youth Community Partnership program,” said Shane Simpson, Minister of Social Development and Poverty Reduction. “These grants will help youth build their skill sets, gain work experience and help rebuild their communities as the province begins economic recovery from COVID-19.”

Local governments, non-profit community and environmental organizations, employer associations, chambers of commerce and Indigenous communities are encouraged to apply.

“Our youth are the future of our Nations,” said Robert J. Dennis, Sr., Chief Councillor of Huu-ayaht First Nations. “Opportunities like this not only give us a chance to rebuild our communities following COVID-19, but allow us to invest and build capacity in the next generation of leaders. Students face an uncertain future in the wake of this pandemic and participating in this innovative program will give them an opportunity to do something positive while gaining skills they can use in their education path or in a future career.”

Applicants can receive grants of up to $10,000 per youth for projects running up to 16 weeks. The youth

then receive a training stipend of up to $2,000 per four-week period (to a maximum of $8,000) for work between June and October 31.

Participants can also receive wraparound supports like bus passes, child care, work boots and personal protective equipment for the work, which will incorporate physical distancing and include no more than 10 youth per project.

It is anticipated that up to 500 youth and more than 50 communities in B.C. could benefit from the grant.

Low-Interest Financing For Home Energy Retrofits British Columbians wanting to switch from fossil fuel-based heating to cleaner, more energy-efficient heat pumps now have access to low-interest financing as part of CleanBC. Depending on the type and efficiency of heat pump chosen by homeowners, the loans will have interest rates as low as 0% over a five-year repayment period and are being offered as an alternative to CleanBC home-heating retrofit rebates.

“Through CleanBC, we’re supporting clean technologies like heat pumps that will reduce climate pollution and help families save on energy costs,” said Bruce Ralston, Minister of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources. “This innovative financing program will help British Columbians make the switch to clean energy and ensure their homes are as efficient, comfortable and affordable as possible.”

The Province’s CleanBC program aims to reduce the environmental impact of existing buildings and to waste less energy. By using more clean energy and using it more efficiently in buildings, greenhouse gas emissions can be reduced and air quality improved.

Canadian firm Financeit will manage the low-interest loan process, which conforms to all Canadian finance and privacy requirements. Specially trained contractors will guide homeowners through the online loan approval process on site or remotely – in most cases providing on-the-spot loan approvals for upgrades to change from fossil fuel home-heating systems to electric heat pumps.
