Simple Summertime Drinks

By Donna Easto, C.H., H.C., M.H., Certified Herbal Educator Rose Hips And Berries (A vitamin C boost in the morning) • 1 tbsp dried rose hips (crushed) • 1 tbsp dried berries (strawberries, blueberries, bilberries) • 8 oz. fresh boiling water.

Steep covered for 5 minutes minimum, remove the herbs and berries and enjoy. Sweeten with local honey if desired.

The Lumby Thrift Store has a new look Submitted by Colleen Fielding During the COVID 19 the volunteers worked very hard changing the store around. It looks great inside. They also have a new way of dropping items off: Marcel is at the container outside taking donations Tuesdays, & Thursdays 11:00 am - 2:00 pm Saturdays 12:00 - 1:00 pm.

The donations stay in the container for about 4 - 5 days before they can be sorted and placed in the store, this is to make sure there is no contamination on the items. Please do not leave things in the hallway at this time.

What Do Rabbits Say Before They Eat?... Lettuce Prey!

Pests in Your Yard and Garden Friday while busy working in the greenhouse with my two dogs by my side a bear (I’m assuming) climbed over the fence and completely demolished one of my bee hives. The greenhouse is about 50 feet away and I heard nothing. I notified my husband who went out and straightened the mess and supplied the bees with new supers and frames. Later that day after doing some research I found a few articles on using human urine to deter bears and the jury is out regarding whether this is a sound or even effective practice. After thinking it over I came to the conclusion that with this little a guarantee and the awkward position this could put me in with my pants around my ankles, in a vulnerable position in front of already angry bees this might not be the way to go. Although not anaphylactic I am allergic enough that I may need to seek treatment If bitten many times. That brought up another whole can of worms and decided to let fear and good judgment be my guide. I decided to leave some lights on in the greenhouse and the TV on CNN. That should do the trick!

Research does show that human and dog urine and human and dog hair are very beneficial to the yard and garden and will also deter many pests. Fresh urine is clean and bacteria free. It’s make up is 95% water, 2.5% urea and 2.5% hormones, minerals, enzymes and salts. All these things are required by plants although excess nitrogen and inorganic salts may be too rich for some plants. However not considering this as a fertilizing program my interest is how well will it work in deterring pest and it is believed to be very effective in deterring deer, rabbits, ground hogs and skunks. It will need to be reapplied after significant rain or waterings. Hair is another excellent deterrent and also will release nitrogen into the soil while decomposing. Human hair is higher in nitrogen than

manure but it should have no sprays, colouring or any other additives if your going to use it in the garden. This too will need to be replaced every couple of weeks. Dog and Cat hair works as well and will deter deer, rabbits and other small rodents like mice. It may take some time to accumulate enough hair to be affective unless you approach a hairdresser or barber for donations.

Coffee grounds too will deter deer and is very good for the soil. The use of grated bar soap especially Irish Spring can help and here is a recipe for a spray that you can try although I would be careful about spraying it on some plants , try a test plant first. Bring to a boil 1 gallon of water and 3 tbsp of pepper flakes. Simmer for 15 minutes then remove from heat and add 2 tsp of dish soap. Allow this mixture to set for 24 hours then strain it and put in a sprayer.

If none of these methods appeal to you try some companion planting. Here are a few plants and the pests that they will deter.

• Herbs such as peppermint, oregano, camomile, chives, fennel, coriander and dill all will help with aphids and spider mites. Fennel and dill will also help with slugs.

• Citronella grass will deter insects and cats.

• Basil is good for whitefly and mosquitoes.

• Lemon grass, Lemon Balm, Lemon Thyme and Rosemary deter mosquitoes.

• Rabbits don’t like onions.

• Petunias will deter aphids and the Tomato Hornworm.

• Catnip will deter ants, aphids and cockroaches however it may attract cats.

Although none of this will deter a bear so it looks like an electrical solution may be needed.

Calories And Losing Weight

A very common practice for losing weight is counting calories. Calories or specifically kilocalories = 1000 calories (small c) = 1 large Calorie (capital C), represent the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 kilo of water by 1 degree Celsius.

All food is energy and how many calories per gram, is calculated for each macronutrient.

• Carbohydrates = 4 calories per gram • Protein = 4 calories per gram • Fat = 9 calories per gram • Alcohol = 7 calories per gram But it is important to know the type of calories consumed, high or low glycemic foods, good vs bad fats, fiber amount, when to eat certain foods…. But how foods affect you whether is types or timing of food and how they respond in your body is another Corner’s topic. This week is about calories and it takes 3500 calories to gain or lose a pound. If you burn more calories than you eat, technically you should lose weight.

The first thing you need to do is find your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate), which is the energy it takes your body to function day to day (sleeping, heart beating, eyes blinking, breathing, eating drinking, talking….)

After you figure out your BMR you need to next find AMR (Active Metabolic Rate) You can google BMR calculation and you will find it quite easily along with AMR. Below are the manual calculations:

pick your activity level x BMR to know your daily caloric expenditure: 1. Sedentary - any desk job, and only light activity as making dinner, washing dishes… BMR X 1.2 2. Daily workout (exercise 1-3 days/wk) BMR x 1.375 3. Standing job moving around all day (exercise 3-5 days/wk) BMR x 1.55 4. Warehouse shipper receiver, fitness/ personal trainers (exercise 6-7 days/wk), x 1.725 5. Construction worker, hard physical labour (exercise vigorously 6-7 days/wk) BMR x 1.9 Once all calculated you will have your daily caloric expenditure. When cutting calories women shouldn’t go below 1200 calories, because it interrupts important body functions which involve hormones and even delay or stop menstrual cycles. Men for other hormonal processes should not go below 1600 calories a day.

So for example, if you were a women and you found your daily caloric expenditure to be 1400 calories and you cut 500 calories a day to = 3500 calories in 7 days, you technically should lose 1lb a week. However, there are 3 problems right away: 1. Calories are now too low at 900 calories 2. You will reset your metabolic rate as your body BMR calculations: adapts finding its new normal at a lower caloric Metric burn, so cutting more calories becomes unrealis(10x weight in kg) + (6.25 x height in cm) – (5x age tic. Also throw in one salty meal and you retain in years) + 5. water stand on scale and see you have gained Imperial weight – which in reality, you haven’t but you get (4.536 x weight in lbs) + (15.88 x height in inches) discouraged and quit.

RCMP Respond To A Cliff Diving Incident On Kalamalka Lake Vernon North Okanagan RCMP responded to a sudden death of a man, involved in a cliff diving incident on Kalamalka Lake, late Sunday afternoon.

On June 21, 2020, just after 4:00 pm, the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP responded to Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park in Vernon BC, for a report of a male who had jumped from a cliff but failed to re-surface from the water. Numerous citizens attempted to locate the male after he did not resurface, however were un-successful in doing so.

The RCMP along with Vernon Search and Rescue were deployed to the area and conducted a search using an underwater camera. The body of a

32 year old Vernon man was recovered on June 22, by the RCMP Underwater Recovery Team.

This is a tragic event for all those involved, including the citizens who attempted to locate the male in the water after he failed to re-surface, says Cst. Kelly Brett. Cliff diving, although a common occurrence seen on Kalamalka Lake, can be fatal and police are asking those who access the water's edge to use caution and common sense so that everyone can stay safe and enjoy the incoming summer months.

The investigation into this incident is on-going and the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP will continue to work with the BC Coroners Service.

Exercise helps suppress appetite The beauty of the correct foods and exercise is that you don’t need to necessarily cut calories. Just by changing the types of foods you eat, when you eat and adding exercise will burn extra calories and help suppresses appetite. This will allow your body to burn at a higher metabolic rate and lose weight comfortably.

Photography is my passion. Disclaimer: The information on some of my photos that I write about a lot of times come from the Internet or books I research them, hopefully the facts are as close to the truth as I can come.

Such A Beautiful Flower!

This little beauty is from the Columbine Flower Family (can also go by the name Granny's Bonnet.)

Columbines grow all across Canada and the United States. In Colorado since 1899 the Columbine Flower also known as the Colorado Blue Columbine is the State flower.

This beautiful bell-shaped, spurred easily grown perennial flower of over 70 species comes in a variety of colors , and they are very fragrant. Although they look very delicate, they are actually a hardy plant.

They are a favorite for the Hummingbirds, certain Moths, and Bees. The pollinators love them, and this great flower is Deer Resistant!

Columbines are a good drought plant. If it is not too hot, they can do great in the sun, but they also do

well in the shade in well-drained soil, you don't want the soil to wet as this will cause rot.

They can be grown in rock gardens easily.

When grown in the sun they are seem to be a more compact size. While in slight shade they seem to grow taller. This is a plant that will thrive more if you deadhead it (Flowers that are done and faded.)

They can be grown fairly easily from seeds planted in the Spring, continuing their growth from April to July. Their sizes can range from 6 inches to 4 feet tall. making a great variety in your gardens.

I have 4 different colors in my gardens they are such a beautiful accent to the other flowers, they always bring a smile to my face, especially when I see the pollinators enjoying their sweet nectar.

Pandemic Supports To Continue Through The Summer The Province is extending interim measures, including a new round of funding and supports for children with special needs and youth aging out of care, to help children, youth and families through the ongoing pandemic.

“COVID-19 has turned our world upside down, and we need to do all we can to support young people and families who are still struggling,” said Katrine Conroy, Minister of Children and Family Development. “As a Province, we’re moving ahead with a restart plan focused on restoring services that have been negatively impacted by the pandemic. In the meantime, vulnerable youth and families can continue to rely on interim supports to help them through this time of transition.”

needs and their families will provide a direct payment of $225 per month for up to three months to assist eligible families. This will be available from July 1 to Sept. 30, 2020, and will reach twice as many families as the first round of funding, helping them to access critical supports.

Flexible parameters regarding autism funding and the temporary suspension on maintenance payments for children on special needs agreements will remain through to Aug. 31, 2020. Flexible use of respite funding will continue for families until March 31, 2021.

Measures to ensure youth and young adults from care continue receiving the same level of service, even if they were set to age out, have been extended to Sept.

30, 2020. Youth living in foster care, contracted residential agencies or with relatives through the extended family program are able to stay where they are.

Independent living and youth agreements will be extended, and participants in the Agreements with Young Adults (AYA) program can continue to receive funding. Any "paused" AYA time during the pandemic, or the inability for a youth to find em-

ployment because of COVID-19 during a natural program break, will not count toward the maximum 48-month program duration or age limit of 27. A new temporary life-skills option has been developed for AYA, with expanded program access, including cultural programs, and fewer required hours of participation per week.

Social workers are reaching out to youth and young adults to support them and modify agreements where extensions are needed over this time frame. Families accessing children and youth with special needs (CYSN) supports are encouraged to contact their local ministry office or speak with their CYSN worker to see how they can benefit from emergency help.

These measures are part of government’s COVID-19 Action Plan to provide income supports, tax relief and direct funding for people, businesses and services.

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Donald Geoffrey Taylor at the Heritage Retirement Home in West Kelowna after a long battle with cancer. Don was born in Blenheim, Ontario and moved to Alberta as a young boy with his family.

He was predeceased by his wife Betty, his parents Charles and Florence and his brothers James and Wilfred. Don and Betty were married on May 24, 1947 until Betty’s passing in 2014. He joined the Calgary Fire Department in 1952 and retired as captain in 1987.

He was a great outdoorsman and loved to hut and fish. Don and Betty moved to the Okanagan in 1994 where Don enjoyed his love of fishing. He is survived by his sons Lawrence (Evelyn) and Ronald (Judith), daughter Victoria (Michael), 8 grandchildren and 3 greatgrandchildren. The family wishes our sincere

thanks to all the doctors and nurses who cared for him as well as the staff at the Heritage. There will be no funeral by request. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your favorite charity.
