There is a senior citizen driving on the highway.

His wife calls him on his cell phone and in a worried voice says, ''Herman, be careful! I just heard on the radio that there is a madman driving the wrong way on Route 280!'' Herman says, ''I know, but there isn't just one, there are hundreds!''

A husband got his mother-in-law a cemetery plot for Christmas. It came with a coffin, tomb stone, the works. Next Christmas comes by and the husband gets her nothing. When the mother-in-law asks, "Why didn't you get me a gift?" the husband says, "You haven't used the one I got you last year!"

Paddy and Murphy are havin' a pint in the pub, when some scuba divers come on the TV. Paddy says, "Murphy, why is it them deep sea divers always sit on the side of the boat with them air tanks on their backs, and fall backwards out of the boat?"

Murphy thinks for a minute then says, "That's easy.

It's 'cos if they fell forwards, they'd still be in the friggin boat!"

The Village Gallery is back! Thanks to the Monashee Arts Council for maintaining the gallery for the present. In passing the torch, the Lumby Arts Co-op wants to thank all the volunteers, patrons and members of the co-op, all the loyal customers and our landlord Jonny Nagy for opening the doors of this little treasure once again! Our mission remains to promote the well being of local artists and to start this off we have a QuAtrz show organized by Linda Kuraoka.

QuArtz, the quilting arts group of the Silver Star Quilters does! They have incorporated tea bags, yes used tea bags, into their art quilts. For the 2018-19 year, each person took a theme, the monthly presented technique and their artistic imagination to create their art piece.

QuArtz rendition of Tea Bag Art is on display for the month of July at the Village Gallery, 1975 Vernon St. Lumby. The show will include one of a kind QuArtz Art including cards and postcards.

It’s been a beautiful week not too hot and a little rain all refreshing and labour saving.

Social distancing measures will be in place and I’m sure we will all be safe as we have all done so well with all our efforts to ensure everyones health and safety. We won’t be having the Butter Tart Festival this year but next year count on it to be bigger and better than ever!

I’m sure any of us with pets have wondered about what plants can be a danger to our dogs and cats, and there are many. Here is a list that contains many but not all of the plants one would normally see in our houses and gardens. The symptoms range from drooling, nausea, abdominal pain, lethargy, diarrhea and some can even cause more serious symptoms like central nervous system depression, erratic or slowed heart rates, tremors, convulsions and even death. Watch young animals closely when out in the yard and if

Changes to travel restrictions for immediate family members of Canadian citizens and permanent residents

The Government of Canada remains committed to protecting the health and safety of Canadians and reducing the spread of COVID-19 in Canada. The Government recognizes however that the temporary border measures put in place to fight the spread of COVID-19, while necessary, have created challenges for some families.

The Government has therefore been looking at ways to keep families together and support unity while respecting the need for continued vigilance and border measures at this time.

The Canada Border Services Agency is announcing that as of June 8, 2020 23:59 EDT, foreign nationals who are immediate family members of Canadian citizens and permanent residents, and who do not have COVID-19 or exhibit any signs or symptoms of COVID-19, or who do not have reason to believe they have COVID-19, will be exempt from the prohibition on entry to Canada if entering to be with an immediate family member for a period of at least 15 days.

Foreign nationals who are admitted into Canada pursuant to this exemption must quarantine for 14 days.

An immediate family member refers to a person’s: a. spouse or common-law partner;

The temporary restriction on all discretionary/optional travel at the Canada-U.S. border put in place on March 21 at 12:01 a.m. EDT continues. This restriction is in place until at least June 21, 2020.

Canadian citizens, permanent residents and Registered Indians under the Indian Act can continue to enter Canada by right, and are subject to COVID-19 entry screening measures.

The immediate family member will need to confirm that they have a suitable place to quarantine for 14 days where they will have access to basic necessities (such as food and medication) and not have contact with vulnerable people, such as adults aged 65 years or over and people with pre-existing medical conditions, unless the vulnerable person is a consenting adult or is the parent or minor in a parent-minor relationship.

Travellers will be expected to make plans for where they will quarantine in advance of arriving to Canada.

(Calcium-Vitamin D-Magnesium) Keeping to the theme on what vitamins or minerals we may be deficient in, if you are vegan, elderly, menopausal, or with certain digestive problems as below; you may not be absorbing what you need: • Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD – heartburn) • Gallstones • Celiac Disease • Crohn's Disease • Ulcerative Colitis • Irritable Bowel Syndrome Already covered were VitB12 and Iron. The other big one is calcium. Calcium is a mineral that is necessary for life. In addition to building bones and keeping them healthy, calcium enables our blood to clot, our muscles to contract, nerves to signal and our heart to beat. About 99% of the calcium in our bodies is in our bones and teeth. Every day, we lose calcium through our skin, nails, hair, sweat, urine and feces. Our bodies cannot produce its own calcium. That’s why it’s important to get enough calcium from the food we eat. When we don’t get the calcium our body needs, it is taken from our bones. But it needs help from a few friends in order to be absorbed and do its job properly.

Vitamin D is one such friend, often referred to as the “sunshine vitamin,” because your body produces vitamin D naturally when it’s directly exposed to sunlight. Sun exposure to the hands, face, arms and legs 2-3x per week is an easy, reliable way for most people to get adequate vitamin D. Exposure time can differ, depending on colour of skin, the lighter you are the less time required, the darker you are the more time needed, which formulates into about 10-30 minutes each time. This would equal 1/4th of the time it would take to develop a mild sunburn for you to produce enough vitamin D. Deficiency is common for those living in the northern hemispheres, especially in the winter months. The elderly living in southern climates or the snowbirds (over 65 years of age) can also be at risk for deficiency due to aging kidneys (this organ helps convert to Vitamin D to a useful form), or fewer receptors in their skin that convert Vitamin D. Also, the elderly along with younger children/babies might be covered up more, or use too much sunscreen blocking out Vitamin D formation. You can also get

Vitamin D through certain foods and supplements.

Without sufficient vitamin D, a hormone, calcitriol (“active vitamin D”) will not form and this in turn leads to insufficient calcium absorption from food intake and the body must take calcium from its stores in the skeleton. This weakens existing bone and prevents the formation of strong, new bone, putting you at risk for developing bone abnormalities such as soft bones (osteomalacia – in kids’ rickets) or fragile bones (osteoporosis).

This is a column meant for fun and some information About myself: I am a Freelance Photographer you often see me on the side of the road or in various places taking photos of different things animals, birds, places, people etc. l have lived in Lumby just over 8 years,you have seen my photos in the newspaper (Lumby Valley Times) and once in awhile in the Vernon Morning Star, and the Lumby Art Gallery. Photography is my passion. Disclaimer: The information on some of my photos that I write about a lot of times come from the Internet or books I research them, hopefully the facts are as close to the truth as I can come.

The other day I was coming back from Vernon, it was a nice day, so I thought I would take a walk through the Salmon Trail.

I haven't been there since last year, so I thought today would be a good day. As I was parking, I noticed a couple coming out with their jackets on so I put mine on. I was also wearing my Capri's and sandals.

Grabbing my camera, I moved on.

As I was walking, I was glad I had grabbed my jacket, as even though it was nice in the sun, the shade was a bit chilly (there will be another reason to be glad of wearing a jacket, as you will find out soon.)

I had forgotten what a nice walk it was, and all the wonderful things you can see there.

At first, I saw nothing. I continued my walk anyways.

Then I saw her, just lying in the grass watching me. I slowly pulled out my camera. She didn't move. I started to take her picture. There she was this beautiful young Mule Deer lying in the grass on the other side of the fence (pictured) you could tell she was young, as she hasn't grown into her ears yet. Her ears were quite large for her little head.

Oh Deer!

At first, she just laid there letting me take her photo.

Then she slowly got up still watching me. As she got up ever so slowly, I didn't move. She went to a branch and nibbled on that. I kept taking her picture. After a while she sauntered away, I slowly sauntered away too, and continued on my walk.

Going a little bit further, there was a Sparrow, gathering twigs probably for a nest. So, I stopped and took his picture. He didn't stay around for as long as the Mule Deer had so my photo taking was a little bit shorter this time.

I continued on, there of course was the Marmot, so of course I stopped to take his picture, as he poised lying on his log. After a bit I continued on.

I saw a crow up on a branch, so I took his picture too.

There were some black birds, but I didn't take their pictures, as they flew off.

So far, the walk was enjoyable, but as I got closer to the bridge that would take me out to Hwy 6 it started to get very muddy. I stopped for a minute thinking about it, I took a couple of steps forward,

then I thought better of it. I was only wearing my sandals. You remember what happens to me walking through muddy areas, and not wearing the proper shoes ( I think I should carry a pair of shoes with good tread in my car). Memories of last season and other years came back (not wearing the proper shoes and wiping out in the mud.)

So, I turned around to start to walk back to my car.

Passing a couple out with their nice dog on a leash, we said hi and made sure we were social distancing as we passed each other.

Still enjoying my walk, listening to all the wonderful sounds, stopping to take pictures of the wild flowers.

The walk back to the car was great, until.......

I felt something on my legs, don't forget I am wearing Capri's and sandals (very glad that I was wearing a jacket over my sleeveless top.)

When I looked down,( I know I told you before don't look down, but this time I had no choice I had to look down too see what was biting me, I was horrified!

My Lily-White legs ( yup no sun on them so far) are covered ( and boy do I mean covered) in these tiny black flies with white/ silvery wings making a meal out my legs. They were not no-see-ums; I am not sure what they were but their bites hurt.

Now you know the other reason why I was glad to be wearing a jacket. These biting flies had not been there on the beginning of my walk otherwise I would not have continued.

They left almost as fast as they had arrived, so I was able to continue to my car without having to stop every second to wipe those nasty critters off my legs.

After a successful launch to the new Rural Economic Development Grant Program, electoral area directors have opened a second intake period for applications. The Program provides grants for projects and initiatives that generate economic growth in the rural areas of the North Okanagan.

“Within only a few months of launching this grant program, we were able to support a variety of organizations from different sectors,” said Rick Fairbairn, Chair of the Electoral Area Advisory Committee.

“We look forward to reviewing more applications to further support rural economic development.”

The successful applicants so far include the Lumby Historical Society, Larch Hills Nordic Society, North Okanagan Land to Table Network, and the Okana-

gan Film Commission.

All projects and initiatives that benefit rural economic development will be considered for grants; however, additional points will be awarded to applications that support: • Agriculture, • Forestry; • Tourism; • Technology/Manufacturing, and; • Creative Industry.

How to Apply The application period is now open, so organizations and groups are encouraged to review the fund criteria and eligibility requirements and submit a grant application by September 30, 2020.

As I continued to the car, the Marmot was still there, I stopped to take his picture again as he posed in different positions.

I saw another person walking their dog, this dog was not on a leash, even though there are signs posted at the beginning of the trail and throughout the trail as well. The dog stopped to go to the bathroom, but the owner kept walking and did not cleanup after their dog. Hmmmmmm!

As I neared the entrance/exit of the Salmon Trail, there was a man that had just put his dog in the car, he grabbed a doggie bag that is supplied; from the bin, walk back and pickup his dog's waste. Hooray thank you.

So, this is what I liked and did not like about my walk: The beauty of the Salmon Trail is great.

Seeing all of the different animals and birds: Beautiful.

Not likening the mud so much, but that can't be helped right now. Yuck!

FISH HEADS to you this is very BAD FORM. When I got home, I made up a baking soda with water paste and put it all over my legs ( yup, I had covered my legs from kneecaps to ankles, in baking soda paste. My legs looked like they had been rolling in flour.)

So, on my next walk through the Salmon Trail, (hopefully I have remembered to put good walking shoes in my car by then) I will wear my jacket, wear bug spray, have my camera with me and ready to shoot different pictures, and breath in the fresh air.

If the sale of your home is contingent on you finding a new place to live, buyers may be dissuaded from making a bid. However, this clause doesn’t have to be a hindrance. Here’s how to best include this type of contingency in a purchase agreement.
