This thesis explores how the design of spaces of maternal reproduction in the city might change the power dynamics between mother and medicine; one in which childbirth is not a disease but rather a continuity of prenatal through child rearing experience, requiring a continuity of access and support.

Like most of our institutions, medical environments, as well as medicine itself, have been mostly designed by men and through the male perspective. Not only are maternal healthcare spaces scattered throughout the city, hard to access by certain communities, the medicalization of childbirth has resulted in the increase of maternal mortality. Current maternal healthcare spaces such as general hospital maternal units, women’s specialty hospitals, and birthing centers are still designed with the premise that childbirth is a condition to be cured.

At the scale of the city, a new matrix of maternal care is elevated above a current medical establishment, with the aim to highlight previously suppressed perspectives and visibly dismantle the history of the neglect of maternal healthcare within the old institutions.

At the scale of the building, the work develops a system of expandable and flexible skins to study architectural boundaries, threshold, and privacy, allowing mothers to define their own healthcare, birthing spaces and nurturing spaces. The work argues that spatial adaptability, flexibility and continuity are defining characteristics of agency — maternal agency.

Coursework Project : Typology : Farmer’s Market 2021 Year : Location : San Francisco, CA Instructor : Mark Donahue, Lisa Findley Geada Alagha Team : Consultant : [ S.O.M ] Jacquline Li-Structural Engineer, Lisa Follman-Architect, Gera Faigon-Sustainability Specialist Cornucopia, “the horn of plenty“, is typically depicted as a goat’s horn or a woven basket of weeds or sticks overflowing with fresh fruit and vegetables, and holds the sentiment of thanksgiving, sharing of food, and bringing families, friends, and community together. For our project, we wanted to hold onto the sentiment of the market itself by making it a place where diverse communities can get together and exchange foods and other goods. Since Alemany market is the oldest farmer’s market in California, we wanted to preserve its oldest structure along with its murals, which symbolizes the weaving together of the old and the new, and the celebration of cultures.

Here, the old concrete structure is restored and mirrored over and the new wooden structure now provides a second floor, hosting a variety of family-friendly programs aiming to bring the community together. The roof, then, spands over the market from one side to the other, shielding the occupants from the sun and rain while creating soft shading projecting down.

West Oakland is facing major development because of the new BART station and the new stadium, these new projects will most likely alter the way the area is now, there are already projects in action of new apartment high-rises that would potentially increase the entire property value of the neighborhood, leading to gentrification and displacement. Before the new development changes the values, programs and people that are foreign to West Oakland, our project proposes to prepare and revitalize the cultural “ground” of the area, to create value by highlighting existing communal and educational programs, connecting programmatically with organizations and businesses on both sides of the highway, and create new values by amplifying and multiplying existing initiatives for the community.

The heart of this project is to create an interconnected infrastructure that reduces the fragmentation of the neighborhood and create social spaces for the community to come together. The existing resources that West Oakland provides the community are prominent, however due to the fragmentation caused by the corrupt history of redlining and urban renewal, these resources are scattered and hard to reach. This project proposes to create a big scale skywalk connecting the north and south side of West Oakland, as well as small scaled skywalks to establish a continuous pedestrian-friendly path throughout the project’s focus area, broadening and blending with the existing sidewalks, seaming together the existing neighborhood assets.

The project’s vision is to create an environment where everyday life is visible - where the community can see itself, get together, learn from each other and get involved in social and cultural events/programs, at the same time addressing the urgency of environmental and foodaccess injustices that have long tormented West Oakland.

The project also focuses on sustainable building for proposed structures, supplying spaces for small businesses and local artists to thrive.

With the skywalk as a civic overseeing platform , our proposal aims to convert the industrial edge of the neighborhood into a thriving cultural hub that celebrates the industrial legacy as the former economical underpinning of the local community, while enabling it to grow into a more significant civic core.

Selected works of a series of 5 small-scale pavilions that makes climate, sensation and energy more apparent to its visitors. These pavilions are not intended to produce “optimal“ environments from the perspective of energy consumption. Instead, rather than being exercises in high-performance building, each pavilion exists in an architectural experiment, a place that uses principles of energy flow and building science to produce a specific experiential condition for the people who come to the visitor center.

PAVILION 3 : V HOUSE - THREE LIGHTING EXPERIENCES The pavilion will consist of three spaces: temperate lighting, maximum lighting, and low lighting. Visitors will be allowed to enter and exit through one way, as they will go down the stairs on the South side of the pavilion, as their eyes can adjust for: Space 1: Tempered lighting, Space 2: Maximum lighting, Space 3: Low lighting PAVILION 5 : TOOTHPICK HOUSE - ENERGY GENERATION This pavilion generates energy through Component 1: Photovoltaic Panels, uses Component 2: Algae Walls for shading during the summer, during the winter algae will be harvested to burn for heating, generated energy will be shown through powering Component 3: Kinetic Sculpture / Wind Turbine.

Coursework Community & Food Hub 2020 San Francisco, CA Nataly Gattengo, Christopher Falliers

This project explores the binaries of vague vs. defined spaces, it blurs the public spaces to allow visitors to be able to walk around without the anxiety of entering a new building, and use enclosures that resemble boat parts or industrial carcasses, to first of all organize defined spaces for programs that require more privacy and quiet, and to second of all, delineate the Kneass Building’s history as a boat making shop. It also explores the binaries of organic vs. architectural forms, in relation to informal vs. formal spaces. In this case, formal spaces would be classrooms, and informal spaces would be public and communal spaces.

The volumetric qualities evokes landscape, from a distance, the building imitates artificial mountains, drawing people in to explore, as people get closer, the voids within the structure becomes more apparent. The purpose of this is to break the flatness of the dogpatch site, and to blur the difference between the park and the structure.

The boundaries between exterior and interior are eliminated, the ground floor becomes a plaza for the public to circulate freely, and the topography like structures on the ground level becomes spaces where people can relax or a spot to eat the food they got from the food court. Programs such as markets, restaurants, retail spaces will be occupying the ground level.

Planters are also added on these to evoke the landscape qualities even more, and to blur the transition from ground to structure.

Each slabs of the topographical structure has a gap between, and is transparent or translucent depending on the program it contains, during the day the gaps allow more light in and provide shading for the chunkier spaces, at night the interior artificial light leaking through the gaps will illuminate the whole structure. The learning spaces at the top becomes illuminated beacons and elevated on top of the artificial hill structures, representing the importance of education, because it is a right that shouldn’t be affected by demographical backgrounds. The project attempts to reject gentrification in the area by not adding an alien structure that extrudes from the site with boundaries separating interior from exterior, but to intertwine public spaces with the building, inducing transparency of the hubs and inclusivity of the community.

This project creates spaces of healing through the extension of threshold between outisde and inside worlds on the first level, leading to a variety of private and medical spaces on the second level, the third level is an atrium with communal spaces, the transparent curtain walls allows for more integration with surrounding nature, the top level is a helix form, creating 2 different continuous circulation paths that connects at the top and bottom, encouraging physical activities.

Case Study 2021 Tautra , Norway Jensen + Skodvin Architects

Simple spaces of the convent inspires calm and insight. Built as a closed building with interior gardens, the convent section is closed and private, mirroring the introvert character of the daily life of the nuns, but the church hall is open to public, the roof is designed to provide views to the heaven above, and constructed in a way that allows the light to let in and make ingenious patterns on the walls.

Outer surfaces are made out of a collage of thin stripes of differently colored slates, to blend harmoniously with the Norwegian landscape.

The slabs are fastened to the structure with metal clamps.

Almost all corridors are eliminated, instead using all of the main rooms where the nuns assemble as corridors and circulation areas. No wood veneer are used on the inside walls because it would distract the nuns from their prayers.

An icon designed as an “evolving spatial diagram“ by architects Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers, the architecture of the Centre Pompidou boasts a series of technical characteristics that make it unique in the world - the inspiration, even the prototype, of a new generation of museums and cultural centres. It is distinctive firstly in the way it frees up the space inside, with each floor extending through the building entirely uninterrupted by load-bearing structures.

The whole of each 7500m2 floor is thus available for the display of works or other activities, and can be divided up and reorganized at will, ensuring maximum flexibility. With its use of steel (15000 tons) and glass (11000m2) and the externalization of its load-bearing structure together with circulation and services, it was a truly pioneering building for its time, an heir to the great iron buildings of the industrial age.

In many ways futuristic, the Centre Pompidou is heir to the architectural utopias of the 1960s, exemplified in the work of Archigram and Superstudio. Its innovative, even revolutionary character has made the Centre Pompidou one of the most emblematic buildings of the 20th Century,
