PROJECT INTRODUCTION

Cornucopia, “the horn of plenty“, is typically depicted as a goat’s horn or a woven basket of weeds or sticks overflowing with fresh fruit and vegetables, and holds the sentiment of thanksgiving, sharing of food, and bringing families, friends, and community together. For our project, we wanted to hold onto the sentiment of the market itself by making it a place where diverse communities can get together and exchange foods and other goods. Since Alemany market is the oldest farmer’s market in California, we wanted to preserve its oldest structure along with its murals, which symbolizes the weaving together of the old and the new, and the celebration of cultures. Here, the old concrete structure is restored and mirrored over and the new wooden structure now provides a second floor, hosting a variety of family-friendly programs aiming to bring the community together. The roof, then, spands over the market from one side to the other, shielding the occupants from the sun and rain while creating soft shading projecting down.

RESEARCH & PRECEDENTS

BERGEN FISH MARKET Bergen Fish market was designed by Eder Biesel Arkitekter in 2012, aims to preserve the historical fish market while contextualizing it in the urban setting. The goal was to provide climatized protection, without dividing or isolating the space from the public way. The inspirations gathered from this market include the incorporation of the new structure over the old, historical market, and ways in which the program was laid out on the second-floor enclosures. Our project also aims to contextualize the market within the urban setting by adopting some of the existing forms and languages found on the site and in the historical market itself. KITAZAWA KENCHIKU FACTORY The Kitazawa Kenchiku Factory was designed by Fumiko Misawa and Masahiro Inayama in 2010, and it serves as a beautiful example of a contemporary timber structure made entirely of cedar wood. The structure encompasses a triangular exterior envelope, which is held together by main trusses and a set of beams connected on top and between them, resulting in a dome-like appearance of the interior envelope. Our project adopts the double-enclosure method but in ways that better works for the site. Instead of applying a triangular, we decided to imitate the form for the existing market stalls which is resembled as a curved opening within a rectangular frame, using a curve stitching method to obtain that interior curvature.

PROGRAM : WOOD WORKSHOP/FACTORY LOCATION : NAGANO, JAPAN ARCHITECT : FUMIKO MISAWA + MAAHIRO INAYAMA DIMENSIONS : 18M X 24M

CCA Integrated Studio Report

GENERAL In 2010 Japan’s earthquake caused many deaths under buildings collapsing, which resulted in the establishment of two basic building policies: promotion of the usability of wood in public buildings, and all Japanese public buildings not higher than three floors shall use a wooden structure as the main one. Wood structures have good seismic resistance and they are also very energy efficient. The structure uses locally harvested cedar.

Fall/2021 Local Futures Instructors: Lisa Findley Mark Donahue

PROGRAMMATIC RESPONSE The workshop is used to utilize wood and produce wooden elements mainly for structure and architectural purposes.

Team: Geada Alagha Lulu Wang

IMAGE DESCRIPTION The images shown are exterior and interior photos of the wooden roof structure along with some construction photos.

GENERAL This project titled “History Continued” is a renovation of the century old existing market located by the Bergen Harbor, and in the heart of the city. The original market is an important tourist attraction, the new building on the open square provided comfort and hygiene all year round for both vendors and visitors. The continuous paving and glazing gives a sense of a continuous ground floor.

Fall/2021 Local Futures Instructors: Lisa Findley Mark Donahue

URBAN CONTEXT The project provides necessary facilities while reflecting both the urban situation and history of the place. The height of the building allows for a view of the historical buildings behind, the all-around glazing on the ground floor provides a clear view of the market from the outside and a clear view of the harbor from within. The historic warehouse property lines are traced in the paving, and the materials and colors of the new structure reflects the history of the harbor.

CIRCULATION The main part of the market is located on the first floor, where vendors sell their fresh products or cook it and serve it to the customers. The first floor has four exits facing the sidewalk and six exits face the water. Those exits are placed parallel to each other to create a continuous path through the market and between the vendors. The second floor houses the visitor information center, office spaces, restrooms, rest area, and a panoramic view of the water. Visitors are lured into the second floor entrance through a staircase that merges from the sidewalk, or through the elevator on the first floor (for a more accessible option). A chunk of the building is dedicated for service and maintenance, housing storage spaces, freezers, ice makers, restrooms, wardrobes and other technical units. The whole structure was designed to be wheelchair accessible. The market, then, exits out to an open plaza, which connects to another set of restaurants and cafes, set up by temporary venues and canopies. ENERGY CONSIDERATION + DAYLIGHTING The floated volume of the roof creates the protected part of the market, acting as a shading device, the flexible glass facade also shelters towards wind and rain. The complete transparency of the ground floor allows maximum daylight.

SITE + CONTEXT

LAYOUT OF SELLING IN RELATION TO VISIBILITY, SITE, AND PARKING The central spine circulation provides great visibility for visitors and makes it easier to navigate to different vendors on both sides, however, some vendors choose to set up selling locations near the pedestrian entrance at the intersection of Peralta Ave. and Putnam St., making the entrance and the rest of the market somewhat invisible. Although the spine circulation provides good visibility for visitors who are already inside the market, the position of the built-in platforms forces vendors to park their trucks on the other side of the platforms, which creates a blocked view to pedestrians walking by/cars driving by outside of the market.

Cornucopia

CCA Integrated Studio Report Fall/2021 Local Futures

From the parking lot, there is no prescribed direction of where the pathway to the market is, for first timers it might be confusing of where to go, they can only assume a general direction towards the crowd.

Instructors: Lisa Findley Mark Donahue

ACCESSIBILITY (PARKING, MOVEMENT AROUND SITE) The stalls are laid out as two long strips that are parallel and running East West. On the north side of the longer strip is the parking lot. On the south side of the shorter strip is Alemany Blvd. Pedestrians can enter from Alemany or from Putman street. Those who arrive by car can enter at Putnam and drive around the market to the lot at the north end. Foot circula-tion is mostly parallel to the 2 strips and crosses over at a center path in the middle of each strip or at either end. The strips are also raised on curbs but there was no wheelchair ramp present.

Team: Geada Alagha Lulu Wang Date: 12/13/2021

CONNECTION TO TRANSPORTATION Shoppers can arrive at the market as pedestrians from the neighborhood, by bus, and by car. The Muni 23 bus runs on Alemany Blvd in front of the market. The Muni 67 bus runs on Putnam close to the market. The location is at the intersection of 2 major freeways 101 and 280 and provides easy access from downtown or up from the peninsula. People can be dropped off near the entrance at the corner of Alemany and Putnam. A traffic island there becomes a convenient spot to unload passengers. IMAGE DESCRIPTIONS Photos show details of pedestrian entrance on Putnam St. along with existing concrete stalls and temporary tents.

PROGRAMMING & LIFE SAFETY

The program is split between the ground floor and the second floor. The ground floor houses the historical market (which preserves the original circulation) as well as the La Cocina incubator. The second floor houses the majority of the program including office spaces, the community garden and kitchens, and La Cocina kitchens. The community garden/kitchen space then opens up to the grand staircase/amphitheater where visitors can rest, hang out, and enjoy their food. The amphitheater then becomes the seating area for movie nights, and the market transforms to food truck vending space, making the market just as active during the nighttime as it would be during the day.

TECTONIC MODULES

The program originally starts at California’s local farms where the fresh produce is harvested and transported by the farmers to the market, where this produce plays an important role in the entirety of the market. Since they are the same ingredients that are utilized at the community kitchen or La Cocina kitchen to feed the present community, and they are the same ingredients taken home to feed families and communities that weren’t present.

STRUCTURAL SYSTEMS

The project’s main roof structure is inspired by the Kitazawa Factory, the structure imitates the precedent by creating a relationship between the exterior and interior envelope through a set of beams and trusses, collectively composes a curve-stitching structure on the otherwise rectangular exterior surface. The design also follows the modular strategy, but instead using two bays as one single module, constructing a facaded roof surface for polygal panels to sit in a slanted manner to gather rainwater for programmatic purposes. The roof holds five layers of structural systems: 1. Curve-stitch Truss Frame 2. Diagonal beams connecting frames within a single module to its columns 3. Interior columns while defining enclosed spaces also as a tertiary structure for the primary frames 4. Cross bracings on the exteior carrying lateral loads 5. Top beams parallel along the long side of the building 1

A6.0

ENVIRONMENTAL SYSTEMS

Throughout this project, various methods of passive energy generation are used. While the outdoor market obviously relies on natural heating and cooling, passive heating and cooling is implemented in all of the office spaces through the use of thermal mass and by placing openings adjacent to one another to allow hot air to escape for natural cooling. Rain water is also harvested and stored in rainwater collector tanks, and later used in the community garden, as well as grey water for toilets. Solar panels are installed at the top of the structure over the office spaces and kitchens to enforce self-sustaining work spaces.

A7.0

BUILDING ENVELOPEMATERIAL & ASSEMBLY

Cornucopia

Since our structure represents the weave of a cornucopia, we wanted the materials to reflect that as well. Similarly to how a cornucopia is constructed using raw wooden cane or sticks, our project uses timber for almost the entirety of the structure, with the exception of the interior floor slabs which are made of concrete. The patterns and motifs shown throughout the project are inspired by weaving patterns in both plan and/or elevation, where they behave in a zig-zag pattern (plan) or weave and alternate between members (elevation). The end of the exterior form curves out and gets gradually smaller, which imitates the closed end of a cornucopia.

Cornucopia

- Look at light weight bridges as precedents because of the long span - Have a good reason for the roof to be at maximum buildable height - Need further analysis for truss but seems do-able - Could have columns between to support the long span, use columns to determine enlosed programs - Top band with trusses are good, bottom band needs bracings on 25-30% of bays for lateral load transfer.

CONSULTATION WORKSHOP ONE

CONSULTATION SUMMATION 10/28/2021 CONSULTANTS: Jacquline Li [Structural Engineer] Lisa Follman + Gera Faigon [Building Energy] - Put rainwater collection pump on 2nd floor to save energy - Living Machine filtration - Think about how structural systems can do more than just structure - Think about energy loads, maybe use photovoltaic panels on roof - Play with the surface of the roof more - Use steel cables for cross bracing instead of wood to achieve lightness - Use a custom gusset plate for the knuckle of roof frame, cross bracing joint. - Insert flitch plate for all joints

CONSULTATION WORKSHOP TWO

CONSULTATION SUMMATION 11/11/2021 CONSULTANTS: Jacquline Li [Structural Engineer] Lisa Follman + Gera Faigon [Building Energy] - 2F needs thermal break whenever there’s a change from inside to outside - Add data for wind directions - Don’t need a big tank for water collecting - Need overhead clearance - Use drip irrigation - Bolts need 2” min distance from edge - 1/2” thickness for flitch plate - 3/4” bolts - Distance between holes should be 3” - 4 bolts/wing, add more if needed - Add another row of bolts if beam/girder has a lot of load - Continue frame diagonal members instead of top beam
