Five Culinary Inspired Movies No Reservations

Carol Fuchs adapts writer/director Sandra Nettelbeck’s screenplay for the 2001 romantic drama Mostly Martha for this Scott Hicks directed remake starring Catherine Zeta-Jones, Aaron Eckhart, and Patricia Clarkson. Kate Armstrong (Jones) is the master chef who is equally intense both in and out of the kitchen. Though Kate’s “Type A” personality serves her well when whipping up meals in the trendy Manhattan eatery where she has made a name for herself, it threatens to sink her when she is named as the guardian of her nine-year-old niece Zoe (Little Miss Sunshine’s Abigail Breslin). To complicate matters, an impetuous new sous chef named Nick Palmer (Eckhart) has recently joined the kitchen staff and his freewheeling personality seems to stand in direct opposition to Kate’s unwavering perfectionism. Yet, despite the fact that they couldn’t be more different on the surface, there’s no denying the strong attraction between Kate and Nick. As the rivalry between the competitive cooks gradually gives way to romance, the lessons learned by compromising in the kitchen reveal to Kate the importance of learning to openly express herself in order to truly connect with Zoe and find romance with the good-natured Nick.

B.A.P.S.

In this broad fish-out-of-water comedy, Nisi (Halle Berry) and Mickey (Natalie Desselle) are AfricanAmerican women with two ambitions -- marry rich men who will give them lots of money, and open the world’s first combination hair salon and soul food restaurant. However, eligible bachelors and business opportunities are in short supply in Decatur, Georgia, so when Nisi hears rapper Heavy D is auditioning dancers in Los Angeles for an upcoming video and concert tour, the pair hit the road for California. They fail the audition but are approached by a man named Antonio (Luigi Amodeo) with a business proposition. Antonio is the chauffeur for Mr. Blakemore (Martin Landau), a millionaire in poor health. As a young man, Mr. Blakemore was in love with a black maid who worked in his household; Antonio and Blakemore’s nephew Isaac (Jonathan Fried) think Nisi bears a resemblance to the girl Blakemore once loved, so they offer her a hefty payment plus room and board to pose as the granddaughter of Blakemore’s lost love. Nisi and Mickey believe that this ruse is intended to make Blakemore feel better, but in fact Isaac wants to get his hands on his uncle’s fortune, and he hopes that Nisi’s presence will make him easier to manipulate. Meanwhile, Nisi and Mickey look like a hurricane that hit a cut-rate clothing store, so manservant Manley (Ian Richardson) teaches them social graces and gives them advice on how to dress. In time, Manley and Mr. Blakemore become friends with Nisi and Mickey; the men learn to be less stuffy and enjoy life, while the ladies become more respectable. B.A.P.S. stands for “Black American Princesses.”

Soul Food

This hit domestic comedy-drama concerned the fortunes of an extended African-American family recalled through the eyes of young narrator Ahmad (Brandon Hammond). Ahmad’s world revolves around his grandmother, Big Mama Joseph (Irma P. Hall) and her three daughters: workaholic attorney Teri (Vanessa Williams), newlywed salon owner Bird (Nia Long), and Ahmad’s housewife mom, Maxine (Vivica A. Fox). Each sister is in turmoil. Teri has lost patience for her husband Miles (Michael Beach), who wants to quit the law and take up music. Bird doesn’t realize that her husband Lem (Mekhi Phifer) is about to be humiliated by her ex-boyfriend (Mel Jackson). And while Maxine’s relationship with her husband Kenny (Jeffrey D. Sams) is going well, her relationship with her jealous sister Teri needs fixing. These conflicts boil over at Big Mama’s traditional Sunday dinners, where the matriarch plays peacemaker. The ritual faces extinction, however, when Big Mama suffers a stroke -- but Ahmad is waiting in the wings to take her place. Soul Food launched the directing career of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, native George Tillman, Jr., who based the script on his own family experiences. In the summer of 2000, Soul Food was spun off into a cable TV series.

Ratatouille

A scrawny rat named Remy (voice of Patton Oswalt) finds his dreams of culinary superstardom stirring up sizable controversy in the kitchen of a fine French restaurant in director Brad Bird’s madcap computeranimated comedy. It’s hard being a rat with culinary aspirations, but Remy is convinced he has what it takes to break the stereotypes and follow in the footsteps of star chef Auguste Gusteau (voice of Brad Garrett). As fate would have it, Remy is currently situated in the sewers directly beneath Gusteau’s elegant restaurant. Soon Remy teams up with a young chef with little talent named Linguini (voice of Lou Romano). Together they are able to create some fabulous dishes, but they live in fear that someone will discover their secret and object strenuously to a rat being in a kitchen. When Remy’s passion for cooking turns the haughty world of French cuisine upside down, the rat who would be king of the kitchen learns important lessons about life, friends, and family while questioning whether he should pursue his culinary calling or simply go back underground and return to his life as a sewer rat.

Eat Pray Love

A woman who once made it her goal in life to marry and rear a family finds her priorities suddenly shifting in Ryan Murphy and Jennifer Salt’s adaptation of author Elizabeth Gilbert’s best-selling memoir. In the eyes of many, Liz Gilbert (Julia Roberts) was a woman who had it all -- a loving husband, a great career, and a weekend home -- but sometimes one realizes too little too late that they haven’t gotten what they truly wanted from life. On the heels of a painful divorce, the woman who had previously looked forward to a contented life of domestic bliss sets out to seek her true destiny by traveling first to Italy, where she learns to appreciate nourishment; then to India, where she discovers the power of prayer; and finally to Bali, where she unexpectedly finds the meaning of true love.

Chef Ed Porter dishes on what makes the perfect recipe. Written by: Cyn The Great

Ingredients

Becoming the maestro of flavor, for Celebrity Chef Ed Porter, has proven to be a journey against self. Being able to take control of his life at a young age was a choice that also revealed his culinary gift. Determination and skill served as the key ingredients to his success in and out of the kitchen. Learning the food industry was a gig that came with trials and tribulations, but more importantly allowed him to pull from his experiences in order to create memories that would last with people forever from one meal. When he was told “no” he did not get defeated; instead he would find new innovative ways to better his craft in order to create his YES. As Ed cultivated his craft his name became a delicacy that landed him a huge opportunity on Netflix’s hit series ISSUE #7 | 9

Pressure Cooker. His experience on the show led him to tap back in with his love for music. With many projects and plans underway, Ed is able to juggle family, music and business while enjoying the art of creating a taste of luxury with everything he puts his hands to.

culinary arts, at least he would be able to be around food; unknowing that he had a hidden gift in the kitchen. The program he enrolled in was scheduled for a year but Ed finished within the first six months and was given the opportunity to attend Delaware Community College on a scholarship. Once he earned his degree, Ed immediately started working for a restaurant chain called the Ground Round. Initially he was placed at the front of the house as a host where his instant goal became working his way to the kitchen. There were times where he felt discouraged but instead of becoming defeated he learned

“I literally fell into it because Preparation my mom When Ed recalls his origin story in terms of falling in love gave me an with cooking he shared, “I literally fell into it because my ultimatum.” mom gave me an ultimatum.” He was given the option to go to job core or to live in the streets of Bronx, NY and follow a path of self destruction. When given the choice to pick a trade the 16 year old decided that if he chose

full time until he was about two years into the industry. Over the years cooking funded Ed’s music career. He took a break for a long period of time as his music group was traveling and working on getting signed.

everything he could about every position. Being a host led him to becoming a good server and being a server molded him into a great cook. He learned all the components required to provide a great dining experience for every customer.

Presentation

Ed expressed that there was an instant gratification that came with the long hours knowing that he had the chance to make his “tomorrow” better than he was “yesterday” as a cook. Once he made way into the kitchen things started to take off rapidly. People were asking for him by name, his private clientele list was becoming filled with reputable people and from there he crossed over into fine dining and never looked back. There were times that he would do the job without pay just to get the experience by going in and shadowing different lead chefs. He would mimic what they did until he was able to do whatever it was the dish entailed with his own flare.

During that time in his life Ed felt like music and cooking were at war with one another because he could not focus on one without having the other idle. Being on Netflix’s hit show Pressure Cooker allowed Ed to merge the two. He had already competed in Guy’s Grocery Games so he already knew how to head into the challenge . Ed’s expertise in the culinary world became evident as he brung a wealth of knowledge and flavor to the show. Being on the show gifted him friends that became family and the chance to learn from his peers. His discerning palate and ability to articulate his culinary expertise made him a respected and influential figure on the show. His charismatic personality and quick wit made him a fan favorite among viewers. Although he did not take the number one spot he walked away with a new sense of accomplishment and a new single PressureCooker that was inspired by his experience on the show. When creating any dish, Ed’s main objective is to evoke every emotion by telling a story through the menu, ambience, ingredients and presentation. He spoke of a restaurant he opened in 2006 called the Willie Mays Skybox Lounge. The food items were created to pay tribute to who Willie Mays was as a person and his experiences in life. Ed’s creative eye allows him to focus on small details that would go over the heads of most. He has perfected the art of working around different food restrictions and make each meal taste equally as good. Since the show; Ed has been working on plans to open up a new restaurant, release new music, marry his fiancé and create new dishes and experiences.

Ed was often the darkest and youngest cook in the kitchen and recalled being purposely misled a couple of times by older chefs so he began stealing with his eyes. He made it a point to surpass anyone threatened by his ability to make money. At the time he did not understand the corporate world and had tunnel vision to pay for studio time to work on his music. Ed expressed “ I had the mindset that if you wanna see me win; tell me that I can’t do something”. Music had always been a part of Ed since he could remember. His earliest memories of music drew him back to when would sit on top of his family’s white fuzzy couch listening to different types of music staring at his mother’s album covers admiring the vivid images. He recalled being gifted a record player, Casio keyboards, drums , guitars and always being around music. At that time Ed did not understand the parallels between food and music in terms of creating art. He did not set his mind on the idea of being a chef ISSUE #7 | 10

meal on the canvas into her performances, creating a multi-sensory experience that leaves her audiences amazed and inspired. The paintings she uses during her dining experiences have been preserved, displayed, and sold in art shows. When it comes to creating new culinary masterpieces, Chef Flava P expressed that

she makes it a point to have integrity in every plate. She recalled a time when she was 5 years old where she created her first recipe; she used a slice of white bread, mashed a banana, poured strawberry syrup over it, and presented it to her mother. The feeling of joy and confidence that came with her creating that dish sparked a fire in her that led to a life of being able to love

what she does for a living every single day. Her love for culinary arts was influenced by her father’s immaculate flavor composition, she shared that his food was always amazing and filled with so much love that it inspired her to continue towards her culinary dream. When it comes to her creative style, Chef Flava P shared she gets lost in grocery stores because she allows the ingredients to speak to how she feels to create masterpieces repeatedly. She has no blueprint locking her into a limited skillset; instead, she can pull from different experiences and environments to build her own brand and flavor composition. Chef Flava P’s notoriety came when everything was shut down due to covid. Before the shutdown, she worked through jobs starting with Krystal’s, Outback, A Sports Bar and even her own Bums Barbeque restaurant all before the age of 23. Covid as we all know, shut down millions of small businesses and forced creatives to find new innovative ways to keep their momentum going. Chef Flava P experienced some tough times before producing the idea to sell plates at different events and clubs. She began making a name for herself and produced Major Flava. Which, in turn, caused her to launch

her show Major Flava TV on Food & Lifestyle TV. She is currently the executive Chef at Snooze Am Eatery. Chef Flava P competed in her first culinary competition, Dragon Fire Kitchen, where she won first place. She even received The Individuality Moment Maker Award, leading to bigger

“My personal goal is to provide integrity from the time the order is taken up to the time each customer takes their first bite in order to provide an amazing experience.” clients and better gigs. She displayed her creative dining experience for the BET AWARDs and has since shined in every aspect. Overall, Chef Flava P is a culinary entertainer who brings not only delicious food but also a sense of joy, excitement, and entertainment to the table. She knows

that God put her on this earth to please and serve others. Living up to her purpose is what pushes her to only move forward and accomplish every goal she sets before herself. As a leader she wants every single client to always remember the experience that she provided. She gives back to the community by having workshops with children teaching them how to cook, having cooking competitions amongst staff to challenge them to learn new things and other forms of community service. The experience that she creates is unmatched and cannot be compared to any other chef doing it. She has branded herself through individuality, drive, and pure talent. As a creative she has tapped into art, rap and just demanding the attention of anyone watching her journey to success. She launched her own seasoning called Flava Dust with a jingle to accompany it. There is almost never a time where she is not in the kitchen but when she is not; she is somewhere being inspired by life to bring back those experiences and add them to the kitchen. She intends to take over the culinary entertainment industry by continuing to be herself and bring her flava to every dish she creates.

Sean Wesley Edwards Written by: Cyn The Great

Sean Wesley Edwards is a talented wordsmith who can beautifully craft prose, poetry and rap with ease. His words dance off the minds of his listeners, evoking emotion and painting vivid pictures that leave lasting impressions each time he speaks. He weaves together intricate stories, capturing the essence of the human experience in a way that is both relatable and thought-provoking. As a young boy he knew that his words had value and over the years he has used his gift to be the voice of those who sometimes cannot speak or to simply evoke a feeling to let people know they are not alone in their experiences. Wes Lee’s mastery of language is ISSUE #7 | 14

evident in every line he speaks words on a deeper level. Whether he is speaking about love, loss, or the beauty of nature, his words resonate with listers and stay with them long after they have heard his voice. Wes has performed in many settings and recorded numerous pieces of work. He uses poetry to give back to others and rap as a selfish escape for himself and just happens to be a phenomenal lyricist. But it’s not just his skill with words that sets Wes Lee apart; it’s also his unique perspective and voice. He has a knack for finding the extraordinary in the ordinary, shining a light on the small moments and details that often go unnoticed. True artists draw emotion from what they have experienced firsthand or what they learn through others. Wes expressed that as a young boy he was often told “you talk too much,” instead of letting this break his spirits he would remind himself that he was practicing for something bigger than himself because he believed that his words had value. Growing up, as the oldest child, Wes helped raise and care for his younger siblings. He recalled times when he came home from school and was handed a child as his parents were on the way out the door to work. When he was 9 years old, he jumped off the school bus to find that both parents were home; but there was no baby in hand. Wes learned that his baby sister had passed away and at such a tinder age, he did not have the emotional intelligence to comprehend how or why God would take away his little sister. For a while grief took hold of him and caused him to shut down and fall behind in school. When prompted to respond to a quote in front of the entire class, Wes’ love for poetry was birth because his response was so profound that the teacher and students praised him for his ability to speak so eloquently.

Now he can pay it forward by standing as a pillar and working with others to create opportunities to be recognized for creating spaces that build partnerships that continue to grow a foundation. He said “I have no barriers in my ability to connect with people on a familiar level. Which is why I work outward rather than straight to the top”.

so mind blowing that his friend received a scholarship and was able to finish out the semester without having to drop classes after Wes pitched the video to the dean and academic affairs. He recalled his debut hip hop album Cope Deluxe where he had a listening party that landed a few editorial playlists. The album was engineered at his home studio and produced by his good friend Duke. The event went over so well that it led to his next big project, grammy considered To Whom This May Benefit. The project is composed of a series of letters to different concepts we share as mankind. While poetry serves as a to be the voice to the voiceless; rapping serves as his therapy that allows him to battle his own demons Being a father is another space that fills Wes’ cup. Seeing himself again from a more experienced lenses through his son is a charge that completes Wes that allows him to again, pour into his craft to share with others. His writing is honest and authentic, inviting listeners to see the world through his eyes and experience the beauty and pain of life alongside him. His overall goal is to align himself with the things that serve him as a person to be a light to others.

Most times the “gifted” becomes depleted; the way Wes pours back into himself is through his music.

As he got older and began working, Wes worked his way into leadership positions and was often admired and praised for his ability to speak and influence others in a positive way. He began to leverage and channel into the power behind his words through outreach and communication. He shared that in his professional, engineering, and personal life he has been able to work with people on a trajectory, on the same ISSUE #7 | 15

Currently Wes is working on a project titled Good Grief. The album depicts a storyline that exploits the beauty of how we become better through our tribulations. His words help change the perspective of the “other side” of grieving. His production company, Bonzeye Productions, is known for their ability to provide full-service audio, visual and production. They recently launched a show where they provided a live set audience jam session with a live band where attendees were able to experience a freeflowing open mic session alongside featured performers. When Wes was challenged to speak on some of his most pivital life moments, he recalled to being in undergrad and writing a poem and producing a video with a close friend titled We Are Rising which, became an oath to his alma mater Savannah State University. Wes has worked with multiple nonprofit organizations like Way of Real Discovery, Voices in Power, Cool Kid Production’s, Poetry Me Please, SOB’s. He has collaborated with professionals on the rise like DJ N Harmonix, R& B Neo Soul artist; Innu, radio personality 2Benji, and many others. The list of projects that he’s had a hand in have all provided Wes with experience needed to create his own atmosphere where other creatives can gather and feel better when they leave. He and his team are currently in the works of opening their own venue that will allow for everyone to feel better for selfimprovement. Patrons would have access to video, audio and full production, writing workshops, live music and events. His goal is to use networking to create a one stop shop that allows an overflow of creativity. When it’s all said and done Wes expressed that he wants to be an example of living in your identity, and becoming everything that he speaks over his life. His words have the power to heal, inspire, and provoke thought and he uses that to stand as a pillar to anyone who falls under the sound of his voice. His positive mindset is sure to take him further than his own expectations. He plans to do so by continuing to grow and use each experience as a tool to become better than he was the day before.

Design meets fashion and philanthropy

BURGHALIE Written by: Angela Willams

Meet Rashaad, the 28-year-old fashion designer out of Thomasville, GA. He is the CEO of a luxury street wear brand whose goal is to unite all individuals through fashion and art regardless of cultural background, race, sex, or ethnicity. “Burghalie is a culture where we believe art is a universal love language, and everyone should be able to come together through art and fashion, says the up-andcoming fashion designer Rashaad. My brand gives space to prevent arguments, conflicts, and killing one another because of how we look and what we wear. When people look at Burghalie my hope is that my brand will unite people to share that same common of interest which is fashion and the Arts. This prompted the young designer to make an extension of the brand bringing about Burghalie Academy. Burghalie Academy is a nonprofit organization that caters to youth ages 11-17 and young adults 18-25, which centers around promoting financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and music arts as a creative outlet ISSUE #7 | 25

for kids and young adults. This is also where Burghalie host most of their fashion competition, art awards etc. Graduating from Florida State University, he began his matriculation as a criminology major but always had a nitch for fashion. He then decided to pursue fashion design wholeheartedly. It was his then roommate and current business partner who inspired him to create what is now called “Burghalie. This fashion designer defines fashion as art in its conceptual, something that evokes a certain emotion within you. “It is an outlet to express yourself.” Pulling inspirations from Alexander McQueen, he takes risk and pushes the boundaries with his brand thinking outside of the box. Taking upholstery leather that you would usually use in a vehicle and creating a bomb vest out of it paired with stacked jeans.

Mr. Burghalie is the epitome of what fashion and philanthropy looks like. He has worked with some of Hollywood’s biggest names such as TI, Nelly, and Jermaine Dupri, hoping to work with Li Nas X in the future. He also worked as the creative directive for some of the hottest names in the industry recently teaming up with Black Wall Street for their Juneteenth project and assisting on designs for New York fashion week etc. This young designer is on the run preparing for the Burghalie resort which is the competition for New York fashion week show in September that everyone should be looking out for. This designer wants everyone to look forward to Burghalie becoming a household staple especially within the black community. Working with some of the biggest names in the industry and impacting over 1 million youth and young adults worldwide.
