Final Major Project
Description:
Ascend Projects is a hypothetical company I created, that produce interior design guides and handbooks, aspiring to being a catalyst for change, designing to elevate lives, empower communities and enrich environments. One design guide I developed for this project was for the interior of a social housing flat block. This guide offered detailed strategies for optimizing space, enhancing functionality, and creating welcoming environments within the constraints of social housing budgets. By addressing specific challenges and offering creative solutions, Ascend Projects aims to elevate the standard of interior design in various residential contexts, making professional design insights available to all.
In the various floor plans, elevations, and visuals I produced I aimed to maximise space and functionality, designing the rooms to feel not empty but not over worked. I researched various other social housing projects with unique designs in comparison to typical lackluster social homes and temporary accommodations. Through this project, I significantly improved my skills in AutoCAD. I learned how to create detailed and precise floor plans, elevations, and 3D models on SketchUp which were integral to the design guides.

01 Coastal Cares
Description:
Coastal Cares was a hypothetical business concept I developed, aimed at revitalizing run-down areas along the coasts of the UK to create safe and welcoming environments for the homeless. The accompanying project focused on redesigning a set of public toilets on the coast of Plymouth. This transformation involved making the spaces more visually appealing and functional, with the addition of free outdoor showers and a cafe/shelter. The cafe provided a safe haven for those struggling on the streets, offering a place to rest and enjoy a hot meal.
Through this project, I gained valuable skills in community-focused design, project management, and social entrepreneurship. I developed a keen eye for creating functional yet aesthetically pleasing public spaces, learned how to effectively address social issues through design, and enhanced my ability to bring a vision to life. Additionally, this experience reinforced my commitment to using design as a tool for positive social impact.

In this essay, I explore the transformative potential of interior design and how designers can leverage their skills and creative power to improve lives, specifically those living in forms of temporary accommodation. By examining various case studies and design principles, I illustrate how thoughtful and intentional design can significantly impact well-being, comfort, and healing. The essay delves into practical strategies for creating environments that support mental and emotional health, particularly for vulnerable populations, and emphasizes the role of designers in fostering positive social change. Through this analysis, I aim to inspire interior designers to recognize and harness their unique ability to enhance quality of life through innovative and empathetic design solutions.

Styling
Description:
In this styling project, both as part of a group and individually, I styled and propped photoshoots centred around the real products of local potter Katrina Riley, known for her brand ‘Natural Pottery.’ We collaborated closely with Katrina to feature her unique pieces, showcasing their natural beauty and craftsmanship. Throughout the process, I worked alongside fellow interior stylists and commercial photographers to create visually compelling scenes that highlighted the pottery’s aesthetic appeal.
Additionally, I took on the role of graphic designer and produced a magazine to feature the photoshoots. The direction I chose for my magazine was inspired by the post-COVID-19 trend of comfort, emphasizing cosy and inviting settings that resonated with the need for rejuvination and comfort in the home that we were confined to for so long. This project allowed me to enhance my skills in styling, photography collaboration, and graphic design, culminating in a publication that beautifully captured the essence of ‘Natural Pottery’.

Description:
In this project, I had the opportunity to complete my first real site visit at the Mustard Tree Cancer Centre in Plymouth. Tasked with redesigning the outdated space, my goal was to create an environment that felt more uplifting and supportive for individuals going through challenging times in their lives.
During the site visit, I assessed the existing layout and aesthetics, identifying areas that could benefit from improvement. My design focused on incorporating soothing colour palettes, comfortable furnishings, and biophilic design elements to foster a sense of calm and positivity. This project allowed me to apply my design skills in a real-world context, emphasizing the importance of creating compassionate and healing spaces for those in need. Through this experience, I gained valuable insights into user-centred design and the impact of thoughtful interior design on well-being.

05 Train Station Re-Design Project
Description: Skills/Qualities:
In this group project, we were tasked with redesigning a UK train station, and we chose Cardiff Central due to its impressive architectural ceilings that inspired us to create a vintage and luxurious interior. Our aim was to revive the sense of opulence and grandeur that train stations once embodied. Drawing on the station’s historical elegance, we focused on integrating classic design elements with modern functionality.
I was specifically responsible for designing bespoke booth seating that complemented the overall vintage aesthetic while providing comfort and practicality for passengers. Through this project, I honed my skills group work, custom furniture design and gained valuable experience in creating cohesive interior spaces that honour historical architecture while meeting contemporary needs.

Description: Skills/Qualities:
In this collaborative project, students from various courses at my university came together with the idea to design bold campaign posters for the Help Stop Violence Against Women campaign in the UK, with the target audience of young men. Our multidisciplinary team combined talents in design, photography, and communication to create impactful visual messages aimed at raising awareness and promoting change.
During the project, I faced several challenges that required improvisation and adaptability. I worked on the photoshoots with very limited resources, which pushed me to be creative in using available materials and spaces effectively. Additionally, I was responsible for editing the images, ensuring they conveyed the powerful and urgent message of the campaign. This experience taught me valuable lessons in resourcefulness, teamwork, and the importance of clear, compelling visual communication in advocacy work.

Description:
Something I’m very passionate about as a designer is designing for purpose, enhancing my skills to benefit others. Lavender Solace was a reflection of this. It was a self-led interior design project I created, focused on transforming a group home for women and children who had escaped domestic abuse into a sanctuary of comfort and healing. This initiative explored the concept of comfort through nostalgia, creating spaces that evoked feelings of safety, warmth, and familiarity. By incorporating elements reminiscent of a cosy home environment, such as vintage furniture, soft textiles, and soothing colour palettes, the design fostered a sense of stability and peace. The project emphasised personal touches and communal areas that encouraged connection and support, offering residents a nurturing environment where they could begin to rebuild their lives.
I was very lucky to then have Lavender Solace later featured in an exhibition by Shelter Plymouth, aiming to raise awareness about the social housing and homelessness crisis in the UK. This exhibition highlighted the importance of creating supportive and restorative living environments for vulnerable populations, showcasing the project’s innovative approach to interior design as a potential model for future social housing solutions.
